00:15This is the German Touring Car Masters 2003.
00:2357,000 spectators at the season opener at Hockenheim.
00:35Things have changed from last season.
00:38They're now a super-pull for the top ten of the regular qualifying.
00:47And there'll be just one one-hour race on Sunday.
01:02Ready to go. First race to the season.
01:04Baron Schneider is on the right.
01:06On the pole next to him is Martin Tomchek.
01:08And look in the middle.
01:09Jaune Alese in the Mercedes gets a great jump.
01:11As we're here at Hockenheim on the 2.84-mile circuit.
01:15And Jaune Alese pulls up into second place.
01:18Fessler goes way wide as the first race of the season is underway.
01:23And Baron Schneider is your leader.
01:32You're riding with Laurent Aiello.
01:34And the rain has started early here at Hockenheim.
01:39On lap three, the drivers have started to come in to change tires.
01:44And one of the first ones in, your leader, Baron Schneider.
01:56This is Schneider's kind of weather.
01:58But first, we have to get through the pit stops.
02:02The top contenders are in.
02:04Aiello, Tomchek.
02:05And now everybody heads back out.
02:08But you can see the situation here at Hockenheim.
02:11The rain could be the deciding factor.
02:17Ready to go on the restart.
02:19Baron Schneider has the lead.
02:23Alese is running now in second position.
02:26Tomchek is third.
02:27And Laurent Aiello is fourth.
02:30Here you get a look at Carl Vendlinger.
02:32Next to him is Timo Scheider.
02:35Conditions are bad.
02:37Vendlinger goes into Scheider.
02:38And they both go off.
02:42Looks like Scheider came out of it all right.
02:45No, he finally spins again.
02:52Here we have Christian Albers on the outside.
02:54He is hit by Huisman.
02:55Patrick Huisman from the Netherlands.
02:58And it's Albers who spins.
03:01Now the battle between Alese and Aiello.
03:07And Aiello gets by him.
03:11Or does he?
03:13Jean Alese from France.
03:15Putting the pressure on.
03:17Marcel Fessler.
03:19Back in the pits.
03:20Changes to Slicks.
03:22He'll take over second place.
03:25Schneider is still out in front.
03:27While lapping Menuh.
03:29He touched him just a little bit.
03:30But Menuh is able to go on.
03:36Christian Aft.
03:38Problems in the first race.
03:41Ben Schneider.
03:43Headed for victory here at Hockenheim in the first race of the season.
03:46He's out to regain a title.
03:48He gave up to Aiello last year.
03:50It was a perfect start with pole position and a win in the race, in the first race with a
03:55good lead.
03:55And I'm really looking forward now for the next race.
03:59But I'm sure it will be not easy there like this.
04:02The AMGE team naturally very, very happy.
04:06Schneider puts some donuts on the track.
04:09Behind Schneider, Fessler, Aiello.
04:12Then comes Lazy Dumbbrek, Scheider, and Ekström.
04:16Then it's champagne time at Hockenheim.
04:20Mercedes off to a great start.
04:24The next stop on the tour.
04:25The first ever at the Adria International Raceway in Italy.
04:36The track is 1.67 miles long.
04:40It's in an industrial park area.
04:45It's the first time at this track for most of the drivers.
04:55Oliver Bierholtz, one of Germany's most popular soccer players,
04:59visits sister Nicole Schneider and brother-in-law Berndt before the race.
05:02A family meeting in Venice.
05:04Bierholtz lives in Italy and plays for nearby football club Verona.
05:08And is very happy to meet the family on a racing weekend.
05:12Well, I like it very much that it's here in Italy,
05:15close to my house where I live for playing football.
05:18And I think it's a good atmosphere here.
05:21And I hope that even the Italian people who like sports cars very much,
05:25that they can follow the race.
05:27It's hot.
05:2828 degrees centigrade or 82 degrees Fahrenheit in the shade.
05:32Marcel Fesler is on the left.
05:34Berndt Schneider is on the right.
05:35Two Mercedes up front as we're underway here in Italy.
05:38And Marcel Fesler from Switzerland gets a great start.
05:41Meanwhile, cars crashing in the back of the pack.
05:44That's Manuel Reuter on the far right of your screen going up against the wall.
05:48He's one of the top Opel drivers.
05:50Taking a look at a view from behind.
05:53Now they start bunching up.
05:56You can't tell who was the problem in this one.
05:59But Patrick Huseman certainly had a view.
06:01I had a very good start and the guys in front of me, Blekemola and Jaeger, didn't have a good
06:05start.
06:06And Jaeger came over to the left.
06:08He was banging a little bit by wheels.
06:11And then Blekemola came a little bit to the right.
06:14So I was just sandwiched.
06:15And somehow then Timo Scheider came from the outside.
06:18I don't know if he made a mistake or got touched by Blekemola again.
06:21But he was suddenly was just in front of us sideways.
06:23And we couldn't avoid him.
06:26There you get a look at Timo Scheider's Opel after the initial collision here at the start at the Adria
06:34International Raceway.
06:37Pit stop time.
06:38Marcel Fezler, your leader, coming in for the first of the mandatory pit stops.
06:42This year, two mandatory pit stops.
06:45They have to change tires.
06:49Fezler is in and out.
06:53Here comes Ben Schneider.
06:56He and Jauna Lazy were penalized because they exceeded the pit lane speed limit.
07:03And he has to take a drive-through penalty.
07:08The Mercedes crew wonders what happens.
07:12But what really happens is this.
07:15Schneider has to take his time going through the pit lane and the rest of the field simply goes by
07:21him.
07:22The winner from Håkenheim, with his work cut out for him.
07:27Jean Lazy from France, in exactly the same situation.
07:32Norbert Haug isn't sure what happened.
07:40At this point in the race, your leader is Christian Albers, the young driver from the Netherlands.
07:49He got his big chance in a factory car this year.
07:52He's teammate of Bernd Schneider.
07:54And here in Italy, he's taking advantage of him.
07:58Jean Lazy tries to pass.
08:01Loses control.
08:02And will fall back.
08:07Martin Ekstrom passes Laurent Aiello.
08:11And both will pull by Bernd Schneider.
08:16Alan Menuh.
08:17A little bit too fast in the chicane.
08:24Matthias Ekstrom on the inside.
08:26He gets by.
08:28Marcel Fesler.
08:29They exchange paint.
08:30And Aiello follows suit.
08:34Meanwhile, Christian Albers is way out in front.
08:40Albers going for his first victory in the German Touring Car Masters.
08:45Ekstrom is in second place.
08:47Laurent Aiello is in third.
08:49Marcel Fesler, your early leader, running fourth.
08:53Christian Albers sees the checkered flag and claims his first win.
08:57Ekstrom, second Aiello, third Fesler, fourth.
08:59Then comes Schneider, Dumbreck and Alese.
09:03It's a great day for the young Dutch driver.
09:07I feel really great because it's just fantastic to win.
09:11And I think it's the best achievement for my career.
09:13And I especially want to thank Mr. Haug and Mr. Hans-Wenner Aufricht.
09:18It's Geert Oonga and Hans-Jürgen Matthijs who gave me the chance to drive in a factory team.
09:23And I'm really happy with it.
09:25It also shows Mercedes ready for this season.
09:29It's their second win in a row.
09:31But the season is young.
09:36The third stop on the tour.
09:38The Nürburgring.
09:42That's the Nürburgring.
09:43That's the Nürburgring Castle.
09:44The landmark for one of the world's most famous racetracks.
09:49They're racing the Grand Prix course today.
09:52Fesler is on the right.
09:53Albers is on the left.
09:54We're underway here at the Nürburgring.
10:00And Matthijs Ekström gets a great start from the second row and takes the lead.
10:06A little bit of bumping going on.
10:08Whoa.
10:09A lot of bumping going on here in the first corner.
10:11But nobody spins.
10:13I said that just a little bit too quick.
10:15Wendlinger has spun.
10:17And so has Christian Aft.
10:22The Audi's with problems here at the Nürburgring.
10:26Ekström is your leader.
10:27Fesler is second.
10:28Bern Schneider, the winner of the first race of the season, running seventh.
10:31And he collides with Peter Dumbrake.
10:34Right at the chicane.
10:40Dumbrake is able to get back on.
10:42So is Bern Schneider.
10:43But they have dropped back a ways.
10:51The pace car has to come out.
10:53The tire stacks at the chicane have to be put back into position.
11:00Matthijs Ekström.
11:02The fine young driver from Sweden.
11:04Out in front.
11:06Now has to wait until they get the track cleaned up.
11:10As we restart.
11:13Ekström just continues to lead with a great jump.
11:18Fesler now is running in second position.
11:25Ekström, Fesler, Alvarez, Tomczyk, Manu, Blikamolen.
11:32Jean Alessi has had some problems with his car.
11:36He had a collision in the first lap.
11:38And the car hasn't run right ever since.
11:43In lap nine, it was all over for the Frenchman.
11:49I've been in a very bad situation because one car may come straight, a big braking, and I hit him
11:58from the back.
12:00But far away from the corner.
12:03And then I lost my front wing and I have to stop.
12:09Alain Manu and Matthijs Ekström coming in for their mandatory second pit stop here at the Nürburgring in the German
12:15Touring Car Masters.
12:17The Opal team goes to work.
12:20Excellent time.
12:215.5 seconds.
12:24Alain Manu leaves the pits while Matthijs Ekström has problems.
12:28He had started from fourth.
12:31But this pit stop put him back.
12:34He would finish in seventh place.
12:36Manu would be sixth.
12:37Manu would be sixth.
13:07Albers in the Mercedes.
13:09Leads Marcel Fessler by more than five seconds.
13:14Five laps to go.
13:18Aiello is far behind Fessler.
13:28Norbert Howell looks on as the final laps unfold.
13:32The finish.
13:34Christian Albers.
13:35Two weeks after his first win, he makes it number two with an outstanding performance.
13:45Fessler finishes second.
13:47Aiello third.
13:48Schneider is fourth.
13:52A happy Christian Albers.
13:55Certainly his team is overjoyed.
14:09I think it was a very good race for us.
14:11It was again a fantastic performance by Christian Albers.
14:14He won the second time in a row.
14:16We promoted him only this year into the new car.
14:19And he does a great job.
14:21Marcel Fessler does a great job too.
14:22He came second.
14:23And Bernd was unlucky after the accident with Dumbrake.
14:28He lost a lot of time.
14:31Albers and Fessler congratulate each other.
14:33A one-two finish for Mercedes.
14:36Race weekend number four.
14:39The Euro Speedway in the Lausitz.
14:43The idea was to use the tri-oval here at the Lausitz.
14:48It would be the first time that the German Touring Car Masters had run on a tri-oval.
14:54But then the problem started.
14:5634-year-old Aron Aiello slides sideways into the wall.
15:01He's unhurt.
15:02But the car is gone for the weekend.
15:12But he wouldn't be the only one.
15:15His teammate Christian App goes through the same situation.
15:20He crashes into the wall.
15:24And as a consequence, the race officials have decided not to go with the tri-oval.
15:29They're going back to the road course for this weekend.
15:35Aiello and App would be racing though.
15:38They took the cars of two teammates.
15:42So the two top drivers from the Audi team were there.
15:46Timo Scheider from Opel hopes that he can improve their luck this year.
15:54Jean-Olazy in a long menu here with Volker Strzyk.
16:00When you was 11th last year, wants to improve on that this year.
16:04But Opel still has its share of problems.
16:08As the teams get ready, the temperature reaches 33 degrees centigrade or 91 degrees Fahrenheit.
16:13It's going to be a hot race.
16:19Christian App cooling down before the start.
16:25Great crowd on hand for the races today.
16:28Bernd Schneider on the right.
16:31Ekstrom on the left.
16:33Dumbrak behind Schneider.
16:34We're underway here at the Euro Speedway.
16:39Schneider with a great leaping jump here.
16:41And the Opel of Peter Dumbrak now running second.
16:45Opel off to a great start here.
16:47After the first couple of races really didn't go their way.
16:52Schneider.
16:53Then comes Dumbrak.
16:54Then comes Fessler and Ekstrom.
16:57Behind them, a long menu.
17:01And Fessler makes a mistake.
17:04Fessler has made a mistake.
17:06Loses positions here.
17:09He'll drop back to fourth.
17:10Ekstrom takes over second.
17:12Norbert Haug watches all the action as the pit stops start.
17:16Bernd Schneider coming in for his first pit stop of the race.
17:23A great stop and he keeps the lead after changing all four.
17:35Marcel Fessler in the pits.
17:37On the right, Timo Scheider goes by him.
17:39Here comes Fessler, the young Swiss driver.
17:42He's coming out as a long menu goes by him.
17:45Not quite.
17:46Fessler hits Menuh.
17:48Menuh spins, keeps it going.
17:51Fessler is off in the grass.
17:53Menuh is in the grass but going back to the track.
18:02Here's another look at it.
18:03You're riding with a long menu.
18:05He is bumped right there by Fessler and is off in the dirt.
18:11Well, with Marcel, I mean, Marcel was coming out of the pits and really don't see if there
18:15is a car on the track.
18:18Fessler gets a stop and go penalty for that collision.
18:23This is Jerome Blicamolin.
18:25He has problems here at the Euro Speedway.
18:29He was running 14th.
18:32It looks like his race day is over.
18:36Volker Strzyk from Opel talks the situation over.
18:44Matthias Ekström being challenged by Timo Scheider.
18:50Scheider wants to get by in the worst way but can't do it.
18:54Ben Schneider then comes home with his second win of the season.
18:58Winning here at the Euro Speedway in the Lausitz.
19:00Peter Dumbrake is second in the Opel.
19:03The best finish this season so far for Opel.
19:13Yeah, fantastic result.
19:15I'm really beginning to like this place.
19:17I was the winner in 2001.
19:19Now I'm here in 2003 back onto the podium with Opel.
19:22I think it's a fantastic result for myself and the team.
19:26And for Opel, every reason to celebrate.
19:41Mercedes continue to run well.
19:44They took their fourth win of the season.
19:47And for the first time this season, Audi, Opel and Mercedes share the podium.
19:55The next stop, the street course in the city of Nuremberg, the Norris Ring.
20:05128,000 spectators have come to see the racing at the Norris Ring.
20:10It's located in the heart of the city of Nuremberg.
20:14And it's one of the most popular tracks among the drivers and the racing fans.
20:29Jeanette Biedermann, a pop starlet and singer of the official German Touring Car Masters song
20:35on pit lane to watch the race.
20:46And the German casting band, Brosis, were also on location to perform for the fans.
21:06Race day.
21:07Jean Allaisi is on the right.
21:08Schneider on the left.
21:10And Allaisi gets a jump start.
21:11He jumped the start.
21:13After a great qualifying, it looks like he may have some problems.
21:17He's got the lead.
21:18He can smile while he has it.
21:20But he had a jump start.
21:31Jean Allaisi has to take a drive-through penalty for that jump start here at the Norris Ring.
21:40The leader, Bernd Schneider, comes into the pit.
21:46But a problem with the right rear.
21:52The man who is looking to come back for a fourth championship has a severe problem.
21:57Here on the road course in the city of Nuremberg, he's back out again.
22:12Meanwhile, Matthias Ackstrum has problems.
22:16And his race day is over.
22:19Here's what happened.
22:21He came up behind.
22:24Reuter didn't touch him.
22:25And the smoke starts to pour.
22:28And the day is over for Ackstrum.
22:37I just turned around the first corner.
22:40And when I put second gain and went full throttle, it came a lot of smoke.
22:44So I parked on the left side.
22:45And what I don't really understand is the brakes were still good.
22:49The car felt fine.
22:50And everything was good.
22:52And so I have no idea where the smoke were coming from.
22:55The Norris Ring means plenty of action and plenty of passing.
23:00Particularly here at the hairpid.
23:05Schneider gets by Aiello.
23:10A lot of slip streaming, particularly at that point of the course.
23:14Bernd Schneider, Laurent Aiello.
23:17Through the chicane.
23:19Past the cement wall.
23:24Martin Tomchek spins, hits the cement wall.
23:28You can't make a mistake here or your race is over.
23:32And the day is over for Martin Tomchek.
23:44A lazy, working Laurent Aiello, gets inside and goes by him at the Dutzen Lake.
23:51He's now in fifth.
23:54Dumbrak, meanwhile, has lost the position.
23:56He's dropped back to fourth.
23:58But he can stay up in front of a lazy.
24:11Christian Albers, the 24-year-old Dutch driver.
24:14On his way to victory.
24:16His third of the season in the German Touring Car Masters.
24:21It would also mean he would keep the points lead.
24:27Christian Albers wins it.
24:30Marcel Fesler, second.
24:33Bernd Schneider finishes third.
24:43And once again, Christian Albers has a chance to celebrate.
24:48Yeah, I'm really happy.
24:50This is now the chance I had in a factory team.
24:53And now I'm scoring.
24:54So I'm really happy with this result.
24:55Three Mercedes drivers on the podium.
25:01It's off to England and Donington Park for the German Touring Car Masters.
25:09This is about 30 kilometers west of Nottingham, near Derby.
25:14The town of Donington.
25:16A town with a typical British flair.
25:22One of the highlights, the Motor Sports Museum at England's oldest racetrack.
25:28Some of the memorable moments of the track when it opened in 1931.
25:32But today, the German Touring Car Masters is back on this beautiful course.
25:38Bernd Schneider on the pole on the left.
25:40John Alési on the outside pole.
25:42We're underway here at Donington.
25:45And an early battle of Mercedes.
25:48John Alési on the right.
25:49Looks like he's got the advantage.
25:50He does going into the first corner.
25:53Bernd Schneider has to drop in behind him.
25:57John Alési, who won here last year, is out in front.
26:00And once again on the left, Manuel Reuter has been knocked out.
26:05What a tough time for the Opel driver.
26:09And Leroy Aiello spins.
26:10And he's hit by Menyus.
26:13And also being hit, Christian Apt.
26:17Two outies involved in that one along with the Opel.
26:25Aiello will try to get back to the pits.
26:31Alési comes in.
26:32Schneider is in.
26:34This is the battle for the lead.
26:38Who's going to get in and out the quickest?
26:42Here comes Bernd Schneider.
26:48And Alési beats him out.
26:51Jean Alési from France.
26:54Comes back on the track ahead of Bernd Schneider.
27:02Action back on the track.
27:04Peter Cherting is on the right.
27:05Bleeka Molen cuts in.
27:07Cherting sends him off the course.
27:13And this is the Aiello car as Laurent tries to get it to the pits.
27:24The officials are telling him to come in.
27:26His car is too dangerous for the track.
27:31Aiello has to pit permanently.
27:44Back on the course.
27:46Peter Dumbrake.
27:47He spins on his own.
27:51He's Opel's big threat for the season.
27:54But he makes life difficult for himself.
27:56But he does hold on to fifth place.
28:02No changes up front.
28:04Jean Alési leads.
28:05Followed by Bernd Schneider.
28:06Then Matthias Ekstrom.
28:07Marcel Fesler.
28:08Christian Albers.
28:09And Peter Dumbrake.
28:14Another great day for Norbert Haug and Mercedes.
28:20This is Carl Vendlinger's car.
28:23Season not going the way he wants it to at all.
28:27But it's going great for Jean Alési and Mercedes.
28:32Second time in a row here at Donington.
28:34Jean Alési headed for the checkered flag.
28:39Alési wins.
28:40Mercedes has won six in a row.
28:42Bernd Schneider is second.
28:44Matthias Ekstrom is third.
28:46The day belongs to Jean Alési.
28:50It's always hard to lead and to have a champion behind.
28:55But that is motor racing.
28:57And it's very important to be concentrated.
29:00I was really disappointed from last race.
29:02Because I did a mistake which is not acceptable for an experienced driver.
29:09And I'm pleased to bring to my team a victory like all my other colleagues.
29:17And now it's Jean Alési's turn to entertain the fans in victory.
29:47It's back to the Nürburgring and the Grand Prix course.
29:56This would be something different.
29:59Qualifying at night.
30:02The German Touring Car Masters here are part of the 24-hour race on the Nürburgring.
30:14It was a special night for the fans and the drivers.
30:36In the end, it was Matthias Ekstrom in the Audi who took the pole.
30:43Surprised, Norbert Haub?
30:44That message from Hans-Jergen App from Audi.
30:48Albers was third.
30:49Schneider was sixth.
30:50We're ready to go.
30:52Matthias Ekstrom on the right.
30:53Aiello on the left.
30:55We're underway.
30:56Christian Albers trying to make the move here up front.
31:00It's a long straightaway.
31:01And Aiello looks like he's going to get the lead from Ekstrom.
31:05The two Audis out in front.
31:07A little bit of bumping going on up among the leaders.
31:12But Aiello gets through.
31:15Laurent Aiello gets through.
31:19Christian App spins.
31:23But the Audis are out in front of the Nürburgring.
31:33Early pit stops.
31:36Ekstrom is in.
31:37Also coming in, Albers, Fensler, and Dumbrake.
31:40Along with Flieke Mullen and Reuter.
31:42Here's Albers in the pitch.
31:45There goes Manuel Reuter.
31:52They have to make two mandatory pit stops
31:55in every German touring car Masters event.
31:57And they have to change the tires each time.
32:01Bad luck for Martin Tomczyk.
32:04His race is over.
32:06With only 13 laps completed.
32:09Van Schneider making the move on Ekstrom.
32:12And he gets by in the first corner.
32:15Van Schneider, the veteran, gets by the youngster
32:17here at the Nürburgring.
32:21Schneider been putting pressure on the entire time.
32:24Ekstrom goes wide.
32:26Schneider cuts inside and gets by.
32:31Meanwhile, out in front, Laurent Aiello in the Audi.
32:37Albers is running second.
32:40Bant Schneider is running third.
32:47Once again, the Mercedes crew watches the action.
32:52You're riding with Bant Schneider.
32:55He's trying to pull up on Albers.
32:58And once again, Bant Schneider goes by.
33:00But it looks like Albers may have moved out of the way.
33:02Schneider is in the points race.
33:04And so, they let him by.
33:08Bant Schneider has moved up.
33:10It looks like he may have a shot at catching up with Albers.
33:13This is Peter Dumbrak.
33:15And Dumbrak, once again, spinning out on his own.
33:23Christian Albers continues to battle Schneider.
33:27Schneider makes a mistake.
33:29Albers looks like he's going to get by.
33:32The three-time champ is passed by the youngster
33:35and his teammate here at the Nürburgring.
33:4185,000 fans ready to greet Laurent Aiello
33:45as he heads for the checkered flag
33:47in the German touring car master's second appearance
33:49here at the Nürburgring this season.
33:55Christian Albers second.
33:56Bernd Schneider third.
34:03It's a good feeling because it's been a long time
34:06since we have such a good result, especially this year.
34:11It was a little bit difficult for us to get everything right.
34:16I think the car could have been better
34:19or the result could have been better,
34:21but all the time there was something missing.
34:23So this time, I think that we had everything,
34:26luck, opportunities, the job also done by the mechanics
34:31and everybody was there.
34:32And very happy for my team, Audi.
34:36And also, I think it's a good thing for the championship
34:38that another car than Mercedes is winning.
34:42The defending champ back on the victory stand.
34:46The winner.
34:53The eighth race of the season, Austria's A-1 ring.
35:00Bernd Schneider, Christian Albers.
35:02Schneider leads Albers by a single point
35:05coming into the race here in Austria.
35:08The championship battle resumes.
35:13Ron Aiello on the right.
35:15Carl Vendlinger from Austria.
35:17His hometown fans hope that he can improve on his season.
35:22Joachim Winklehawk, the veteran of the series.
35:27Volker Strzyk, team manager for Opel.
35:3160,000 fans have come to the track today.
35:35Fesler is on the right.
35:37Alazy is on the left.
35:38Alazy worried about jumping there, it looked like.
35:41And Fesler got off to a great start.
35:46John Alazy drops way back.
35:48Tight going into the second corner.
35:50They go way wide using all of that runoff area,
35:54which is legal here.
35:57Fesler is out in front,
35:59but look at the battle in the back.
36:01And once again, the Audis are in a crash.
36:04Oh, it looks like two cars are out.
36:06Three are out.
36:11Christian Apt is the one that goes into the wall.
36:14Dumbrake and Alazy also were involved in that.
36:16Timo Scheider went off the course.
36:24Mercedes can't believe what they just saw.
36:27But the Audis certainly have to be even more depressed.
36:31Marcel Fesler, your leader.
36:32Christian Albers is running in second place.
36:35Albers needs to finish ahead of Van Schneider
36:37to take over the points lead.
36:45Van Schneider gets by Laurent Aiello
36:48to take over third place.
36:50Schneider needs to close in on his teammate.
36:58Manuel Reuter.
36:59More problems for the Opel driver.
37:02Been a disappointing season for him.
37:08Marcel Fesler.
37:09Bernd Schneider come to the pits.
37:12This could decide the race.
37:17Schneider is in.
37:18Who's going to get out first?
37:23And Fesler does.
37:24And it is tight.
37:26Marcel Fesler gets out first
37:29and holds the lead.
37:33Albers comes into the pit.
37:37It takes a little longer.
37:42And it looks like when he comes out,
37:44Bernd Schneider is going to get by him.
37:45Here they come.
37:47Fesler.
37:48Then comes Schneider.
37:50Out comes Albers.
38:00A battle here for 15th position.
38:12Nine laps to go.
38:15Bernd Schneider right behind Fesler.
38:18Fesler not making a mistake.
38:22Schneider keeping the pressure on.
38:35The Mets' Sadie's pit.
38:37Watching the action of their two top drivers.
38:41Schneider can't get by.
38:43Fesler comes home.
38:44The winner.
38:46Marcel Fesler wins his first race of the season.
38:50Schneider second.
38:51Albers is third.
38:55It was a really hard race for me.
38:57Bernd, he gave me a lot of pressure.
39:00And that was for me sometimes a big problem
39:04because on the braking points,
39:07corner two and corner three,
39:11my front tires are locking very hard.
39:14And so it was,
39:16I was always under pressure,
39:18but I gave my best and I fight for my place.
39:21And in the end,
39:22I think it was,
39:23I just win and that's important.
39:28And once again,
39:29the Mets' Sadie's celebration,
39:31they're finishing one, two and three
39:33here in Austria.
39:39And there's one happy young Swiss driver,
39:43Marcel Fesler.
39:54The next stop,
39:55the track and the dunes.
39:57It's on Fort Holland.
40:04A record crowd of 62,000 fans.
40:12The beach,
40:14the waves,
40:16the dunes.
40:22And the fans have come to see
40:24if Bernd Schneider
40:25can hold on
40:26against their favorite,
40:27Christian Albers.
40:29But as Timo Scheider on the right
40:30who's on the pole,
40:32Tomczyk on the left
40:33stalls his car.
40:35Tomczyk had the outside pole
40:37and stalled his car.
40:40Timo Scheider,
40:42one of the more promising young drivers
40:44in the series,
40:45driving for Opel
40:46certainly has not had
40:47a lot of luck.
40:49But here at Zandvoort,
40:51he's out in front
40:52and right behind him
40:53is Christian Albers.
40:57Bernd Schneider,
40:57your points leader,
40:58had a bad qualifying session,
41:00started 13th.
41:04Albers with a chance
41:05to take over the lead
41:06with still one race to go.
41:08The Japanese driver,
41:10Kenishi,
41:10goes off the course.
41:15In lap seven,
41:16Peter Dumbrake is in the pits.
41:22Dumbrake collides
41:23in the pits
41:24with Tomczyk.
41:26Both will be able to go on,
41:28but the pits are narrow here.
41:30It can happen.
41:35And there's the best view of it.
41:39Bernd Schneider
41:40putting on the pressure
41:42against Alain Meneu
41:43in the Opel.
41:47And he was chasing
41:49Peter Terting,
41:50and Terting put him out
41:51right there.
41:58I think Terting
42:01is not...
42:03I don't know
42:04what he was doing,
42:04basically.
42:05Okay,
42:05I know he was...
42:06Potentially,
42:07he was in third place
42:08because he had not pitted,
42:09but at the end of the day,
42:11I mean,
42:11he was blocking so much
42:12that Bernd Schneider
42:13took three seconds
42:14out of me
42:15in three corners,
42:16I think.
42:16And then,
42:17uh,
42:18he made a mistake
42:19going into corner two.
42:21He ran right.
42:22He was,
42:23uh,
42:24in the marble.
42:24He was on the loose,
42:25uh,
42:25loose part of the track
42:26and he had lost the corner.
42:27Basically,
42:28I'd overtaken him
42:28and then he tried
42:29to get me back somehow.
42:30I mean,
42:30the guy is just
42:31pretty,
42:31he was out of his place today
42:32and I'm very,
42:34very angry with him
42:35and,
42:35uh,
42:36it's very sad for Opel
42:37because it was going really well.
42:39Lap 21,
42:40Timo Scheider
42:41comes into the pits
42:42for the second time.
42:43He's out in front.
42:44He has a chance to go
42:45but they had problems
42:46with the tire.
42:47They had problems
42:48with the tire.
42:49Bernd Schneider
42:50is coming in.
42:55And,
42:55something's wrong
42:57with Timo Scheider's car.
42:58That tire
42:58was not properly affixed
43:00and it came off.
43:02What a great disappointment
43:04for Timo Scheider.
43:07It's unbelievable
43:09to lead the race
43:1021 laps
43:11and,
43:11uh,
43:12you come in
43:13for the second stop
43:14and,
43:14uh,
43:15yeah,
43:15and then the mistake
43:16in the front right.
43:18So,
43:19okay,
43:19it was,
43:19was a mistake
43:20of a mechanic
43:21but,
43:21I never would like to say,
43:23uh,
43:24it was a mistake
43:24of the crew.
43:27Christian Albers
43:28has taken the lead
43:29in front of his hometown fans.
43:31Bernd Schneider
43:32is running second.
43:33Ekstrom
43:34working against Reuter.
43:35and it looks like
43:37he's got a shot
43:38at third place here.
43:40Let's see what happens.
43:42Ekstrom.
43:43Reuter on the inside.
43:45They bump.
43:47And Reuter
43:48drops back.
43:49Ekstrom
43:50takes over.
43:51Volker Stritzig
43:52from Opel
43:53not a happy man.
43:55Meanwhile,
43:56the fans
43:56applaud
43:57their hometown hero,
44:00Christian Albers.
44:01Albers.
44:03Albers only
44:04one point behind
44:05in the championship
44:06chase
44:06with Bernd Schneider.
44:08I think it was a great season
44:09and our team
44:10did a great job.
44:11We go to Hockenheim
44:12now with
44:13two drivers,
44:14Bernd Schneider
44:15and Christian Albers,
44:15just one point apart
44:16from each other.
44:17I think we're gonna have
44:18a great race in Hockenheim
44:20and I'm looking forward to it.
44:22Hockenheim.
44:23The Grand Prix course.
44:25The second time.
44:26The title on the line.
44:28And everyone
44:29has come to visit.
44:30Jean Alessi,
44:31along with
44:32Alessandro Di Piro
44:33from Italy,
44:34a world football player.
44:36He's there
44:37for the season finale
44:38and he also gets a chance
44:39to feel what it's like
44:40to be in the
44:41German touring car
44:42Masters car.
44:54He got a ride
44:56in the so-called
44:56race taxi.
44:59And then it was time
45:00to kind of think about
45:01what he had just experienced.
45:10it was wonderful.
45:13It's crazy for me
45:14because it's
45:16a other planet,
45:17you know?
45:19Another world famous
45:20soccer player.
45:22Franz Beckenbauer
45:23on the right
45:24had a chance
45:25to look at the
45:26fast cars.
45:32Every football player
45:35somehow has some
45:36interest in motorsports
45:37and if possible
45:37he'll drive a car
45:38with a lot of power.
45:43A hundred and five
45:45thousand spectators
45:46ready to watch
45:47the last race
45:48of the season
45:49as these two drivers,
45:50Albers and Schneider,
45:52battle for the title.
45:53Two teammates
45:54in identical Mercedes
45:56but they're back
45:57in the pack.
45:59Up front,
46:00Ekstrom
46:00and Dumbrake.
46:02Ekstrom on the right,
46:03Dumbrake on the left
46:04and we're underway.
46:05Jauna Lazy
46:05gets a great jump
46:06on Dumbrake there
46:07in that black Mercedes
46:08but Dumbrake
46:10holds on
46:10to second place.
46:13The fans are also
46:14watching the action
46:15back in the pack.
46:16Baron Schneider
46:16is back in around
46:17fifth or sixth position.
46:19Behind him
46:19is Christian Albers.
46:21Schneider has to finish
46:22ahead of Albers
46:23to take the title.
46:25But we have a long way
46:27to go.
46:32Matthias Ekstrom
46:33continues to lead.
46:35Albers is working
46:36his way up
46:36from back in the pack.
46:38You're riding
46:38with Baron Schneider
46:39here at the Grand Prix
46:40course at the Nürburgring
46:42and it looks like
46:44Albers is going to get
46:45inside of Dumbrake
46:46at the hairpin
46:48and takes over
46:48second place.
46:53Once again,
46:54heading into that
46:55hairpin again
46:57and Albers makes the move
47:00on Ekstrom,
47:02the Mercedes,
47:03stronger
47:03on the long straightaway
47:05here at Hockenheim.
47:11then Baron Schneider
47:12has a problem.
47:13A tire problem.
47:15This could mean
47:16the title.
47:17He's got to get a fix,
47:19get back out,
47:20and then get back
47:21in front of Albers
47:22or maybe get out
47:22in front of him
47:23before he's able
47:24to get by.
47:25But Schneider
47:26has got a serious problem.
47:28He was lucky
47:29that it happened
47:29right before the pitch.
47:31He didn't have to wait
47:31that long to get in.
47:32The crew goes to work.
47:38Christian Albers
47:39comes in
47:40for his pit stop.
47:42His crew
47:42has got to be perfect.
47:49And he comes out
47:50but Schneider
47:51goes by him.
47:53It wasn't enough.
47:54So Baron Schneider
47:55remains in front
47:56of his challenger
47:57for the title.
47:59Timo Scheider
48:00in the opals
48:01right between them.
48:02Back in the pack.
48:04This is Fesler
48:04going inside
48:05trying to get by
48:06Peter Dumbrak
48:07the battle
48:08for third place.
48:09Fesler gets by him.
48:16Timo Scheider
48:18has a problem.
48:20He spins.
48:22Albers gets by him
48:24and the championship
48:25is on the line.
48:28The points leader
48:29and the second place
48:31man of the points
48:32running one and two.
48:33Here we go.
48:36Christian Albers
48:37has got a problem.
48:39He's going off.
48:40Christian Albers
48:41has the same problem
48:43his teammate
48:44Baron Schneider had.
48:45A tire has gone down.
48:48And he's got a long way
48:50to go to get back
48:51to the pitch.
48:52There's no way
48:53he can catch
48:54Baron Schneider.
48:58What a difficult way
49:00to have your season
49:01come down
49:02to the last race.
49:03A chance for the title
49:04and a flat tire
49:05takes you out of it.
49:16Your leader is
49:17John Alese
49:18on the right.
49:19He's being pressured
49:20by Matthias Ekstrom
49:22but a lazy
49:23pulls in
49:24for his second
49:25victory
49:26of the season.
49:31A great finish
49:32for Audi
49:33even better
49:34for Mercedes.
49:44And it's
49:44Donut City.
49:48It was a fantastic
49:49moment.
49:50Obviously
49:51the win
49:52is always something
49:53especially
49:54when you are
49:55trying hard
49:56to get the victory.
49:58The team
49:58fantastic
49:59all the season
50:00always behind me

50:05and the best
50:07way to
50:07give back

50:13the race
50:13for them.
50:15Van Schneider
50:17celebrates
50:17his fourth

50:31in the end
50:32and this time
