00:07This is the German Touring Car Master, a look back at season number two in 2001.
00:29First race of the season, the short course at Hockenheim.
00:32The question was who was going to dominate early.
00:36A great crowd on hand for the second season.
00:38It's a Mercedes day.
00:40Bernd Schneider's on the pole, followed by more Mercedes than anyone wants to count.
00:44Peter Dumbrek, Thomas Jaeger, Lamy, Alson Turner, and Marcel Fesler.
00:49The best on Mercedes was Aiello in the Audi.
00:52And Bernd Schneider gets the jump right off the bat.
00:56Also right off the bat, Patrick Guzman is off the course in the north curve.
01:03Cars work their way through this relatively tight yet fast short circuit.
01:15He rides now with Christian Opt.
01:18Ahead of him, Marcel Fesler, one of the many Mercedes that dominated in qualifying.
01:26Guzman had problems here, as you can see, and that's why he went off the course right in the very
01:31first corner.
01:33Bernd Schneider with a huge lead, followed by his teammate Peter Dumbrek, and another Mercedes, Uwe Alson.

01:52The Mercedes team surprising everyone here.
01:55They had hoped that the Opals would be back in competitive, but right now, it's all a Mercedes show.
02:00The mandatory pit stop.
02:02Bernd Schneider comes in.
02:06These pit stops mandatory in the feature race in the German touring car master.
02:16All four tires, and he's out in 11.4 seconds.
02:20It's a great stop.
02:26With that pit stop, Marcel Fesler has taken the lead.
02:30The young Swiss driver still has to go into the pits.

02:38Looks like his day is over.
02:40He's in the tires.
02:41He went off on his own.
02:43Lucky the tires were there.
02:47The pace car comes out for the first time this season.
02:52And Marcel Fesler takes advantage of it for his pit stop.
03:00Can he get out in time to keep the lead?
03:02Or not?
03:05No.
03:05He'll come out in second place.
03:10The Tomczyk auto pulled out of the tires.
03:14The race back underway.
03:17Eight laps to go.
03:19And Bernd Schneider continues to be out in front.

03:31A Mercedes parade here at Hockenheim at the opening of the season.
03:40Sandwiched in between is that Opel of Yves Olivier.
03:44He is a lapped car.
03:47And he is also slowing down the field behind him.
03:51Including Fesler and Dumbrake.
03:53Allowing Bernd Schneider to get away from everybody.
04:06Here is Aiello.

04:11And Turner loses part of his car.
04:13Aiello is lucky it didn't hit him.
04:17And Bernd Schneider comes home the winner of the first race of the 2001 season ahead of Marcel Fesler and

04:35The defending champ, Bernd Schneider.
04:44For the Mercedes fans, a great day.
04:46Everyone else hopes that here at the Nürburgring in the second race of the season,
04:50things will change in favor of Opel or Audi.
04:52And the Audi surprised everybody.
04:55The wrong Aiello.
04:57The last Audi is on the pole.
04:58And next to him, the young 19-year-old Martin Tomczyk in another Audi.
05:02So Audi comes back here at the Nürburgring.
05:06And the Mercedes are running third, fourth.
05:13A great start as they go through.
05:18Tomczyk made a mistake.
05:20Went off the course at the start.
05:24Thomas Yeager was able to get by him.
05:28The rest of the field sorting itself out here on the Grand Prix course at the Nürburgring.
05:352.83 miles long.
05:42And to the surprise of everyone, Laurent Aiello, way out in front in the Audi.
05:49After the Mercedes dominance, an Audi out in front.
05:55Taking a look at the start, Tomczyk made a mistake.
05:57Went off the course.
05:59And was lucky there were no more collisions than there were.
06:05Yeager certainly took advantage of it.
06:08And suddenly in the second.
06:12Field now sorting itself out here at the Nürburgring.
06:16They're riding with Uwe Alsing.
06:18They get a good look at the action through the chicane.
06:21Which leads back toward the start finish.
06:27The Audi of Kristianov comes into the pits.
06:32His problems continue.
06:34He's got more than a share of bad luck.
06:36In the battle for second, it's Yeager.
06:40Along with Tomczyk.
06:42Meanwhile, Aiello comes in for the pit stop.
06:45Oh!
06:489.4 seconds.
06:51What a great stop.
06:55However, Thomas Yeager inherits the lead.
06:57Tomczyk is running in third.
07:00And Bernd Schneider is running in fourth.
07:06But they still have their pits ahead of them yet.
07:12So, Laurent Aiello has his pit stop.
07:15And now, he will wait until everybody else makes theirs.
07:19Because he's possibly getting in.
07:23Of taking the lead back.
07:25Bernd Schneider comes into the pits.
07:28Your defending champion, Hockenheim winner.
07:30Heads for his mandatory pit stop.

07:37Loses control of his Mercedes.
07:41Dumbrek, the teammate of Bernd Schneider.
07:49This is Mylander.
07:52And they've got problems.
07:55This pit stop will cost him.
07:57He'll be way behind by the time he gets out.
08:03Aiello now is running second in that yellow Audi.
08:07Michelle Bartle is in the Opal.
08:09He's running in first place.
08:10Back there in third is Bernd Schneider.
08:20Bartle still, though, has to pit.
08:23He's your leading car.
08:24He has stayed out there.
08:26Opal can at least smile here.
08:28They have not done that well.
08:29They have not been that strong.
08:31And they're running back in the pack here.
08:33But at least now they can smile at somebody out in front.
08:36He can see some problems with the Darren Turner car.
08:38The Mercedes.
08:39And now, Michelle Bartle heads into the pits.
08:44And the wrong eye yellow takes over the lead.
08:47With Bernd Schneider running in second place.
08:54Bartle into the pits.
09:02Schneider loses a little bit of control here.
09:06And now yellow is going to get away from him.
09:11Schneider holds position.
09:13But he's lost contact with a yellow.
09:19And everybody else is closed up in on him.
09:22So the battle for second, third, fourth, and fifth is going to be very, very tight.
09:28Jaeger is right there behind Schneider.
09:31He got up over the curves.
09:34And got squirreling.
09:37Got it back under control without losing position.
09:40But he lost time.
09:43Uwe Alsen with problems.
09:46In the last lap, he can't control the car.
09:50And it goes off.
09:51He'd end up in 19th position.
09:53But the day belongs to this man, Laurent Aiello, in the Audi.
09:57Finishing ahead of Bernd Schneider in the Mercedes.
09:59And another Mercedes of Thomas Jaeger.
10:02Extraordinary, I would say.
10:04First win in the DTM.
10:06First win for Audi.
10:07For the team Abt.
10:08I think it's wonderful.
10:10But it was a very tough race.
10:13Weekend number three.
10:15Auschwitz-Label.
10:16Very difficult course.
10:19With front of a great crowd.
10:21In fact, it's a record crowd for the track.
10:23Some 58,000.
10:27At the start of the race, Marcel Fesler in the black Mercedes.

10:34Bernd Schneider cuts right in and takes over second place.
10:38And Laurent Aiello is running third.
10:42The Abt Audis continue to show a very strong performance.
10:53The battle continues.

10:56And here comes.

11:12Either something wrong with the car or he made a mistake and he's trying to catch up here.
11:16But he's dropping way back.
11:24Aiello gets fourth position back as he passes Ekstrom.
11:29Up front though are Fesler, Schneider and Alson.

11:54Time for the pit stops.
11:56Tomczyk is the first in the pits.
12:01All four tires have to be getting into the town in 17 seconds.
12:12A young driver making quite a performance for himself in his first year in the series.
12:22He makes it out onto the course.
12:24And then goes off the course.
12:27A little too anxious and the tires weren't quite ready for all the grip yet.
12:31And he went off.
12:33He's learning as he goes.
12:37Here's Ben Schneider.

13:06The rest of the cars continue to come in.

13:28Slower than Fesler.
13:30This should be tight.
13:37Schneider lost the lead because of that pit stop.
13:42But he did take over second position.
13:54The rest of the field still has to pay.
13:59We see the battling going on back in the pack from the view of Patrick Hoosman.
14:06Norbert Howe, watching all the action.
14:10Can't be too upset.
14:19Ben Schneider loses control.
14:25But he can hold on to second place.
14:27He wanted to go for the win.

14:33That means Fesler is on the way to his first victory.

15:59An amazing start for Schneider.

16:08Dumbbrek made the failure.
16:10Ekstra got by and takes the lead.
16:16A 23-year-old Swedish driver.
16:18Also making quite a name for himself here.
16:23That's Patrick Guzman's car with problems.
16:27We'll have to see if he can make it to the pits.
16:30Hopefully he does it without losing parts and damaging any other cars in the field.
16:42So far so good.
16:43And then there's an accident back in the pack.
16:45Halp and Olsen touch each other.
16:48And then comes Chris Nissen into the tires and across the track.
16:53And back out onto the track.
16:59The safety car will have to come out.
17:02And Chris Nissen is okay.
17:05But a terrible crash here at the Saxon Ring.
17:16The safety car is out.
17:19Everyone is all right, but they have a lot of cleanup to do.
17:24That's Hubert Halp walking through the debris.
17:27His Opal is out.
17:34The safety crew getting him back in.
17:37The safety car has the leaders.
17:43A major crash here at the Saxon Ring, but nobody was hurt.
17:48Here's another look at it.
17:50Halp and Olsen start it all.
17:53They spin.
17:54Everyone else tries to get around them.
17:56Watch the two yellow Audis in the back.
17:59That lead one is Chris Nissen.
18:00He gets out of the way, but loses control.
18:03Cuts back across into the tires.
18:06Back across the street.
18:07And then is hit by Peter Mamereau.
18:10I'm not completely sure about it.
18:12I think it was a race accident.
18:14Some cars in front of me went off or half off.
18:19There was a lot of smoke.
18:21I braked.
18:22I went on the throttle again.
18:23I had to go right and left.
18:25And I lost the car.
18:26I think I came on the grass.
18:28And then I hit the Armco.
18:29The car went back on the circuit.
18:31Another car hit me.
18:32It was quite exciting.
18:35I was really, really scared.
18:38But it's good to see that the cars are as safe as they are.
18:43And during the pace car laps,
18:46the rest of the field was in for their mandatory pit stops.
18:51That included Van Schneider.
18:55Meanwhile, the crews have to go to work.
18:58To clean up the track.
19:05Nissan have been driving along a yellow.
19:09Who was at Le Mans.
19:13So now, extra measure leader.
19:15Ahead of Peter Dumbrak and Christian Opt.
19:19Van Schneider is running in sixth position.
19:27You're riding out with Marcel Fesler in his Mercedes.
19:35Van Schneider continues to move up in the field.
19:39He gets by Timo Scheider.
19:44And Schneider now moves in to fourth place.
19:48And you get a good view of that move.
19:53Now the rest of the field starts to pit.
19:55But Baron Schneider had already pitted.
19:58His strategy has given him a big advantage on the field.

31:52in front of me
31:53but for some reason
31:54they couldn't do it
31:55and when I found myself
31:57in the lead of the race
31:58behind the safety car
31:59immediately I thought
32:00of my mirror
32:00and I saw Bernd there
32:02and I felt a little bit
32:04of pressure then
32:06the pressure's off
32:07unless it happens to be
32:08for the champagne
32:09but the pressure picks up
