00:03You
00:30Hello and welcome to our review of the DTM Season 2010, the season which comprised of 11 races in six
00:42countries, with a finale to be held in the Chinese metropolis of Shanghai for the very first time.
00:51This year's line-up was pretty similar to last year, the regulations had been frozen, so nine Mercedes and nine
01:00Audis, but there was one difference, and that was the tyre compound from Dunlop, and getting your head round that
01:10new tyre would prove absolutely crucial, which of the manufacturers got it right.
01:18Yes, Shanghai was where it would all end, but it all started, as ever, in Hockenheim.
01:28Yeah, Hockenheim, the first race of the season on April the 25th, and here's a familiar face joining the DTM,
01:36a late-minute decision from David Coulthard.
01:40A year out, after the end of his Formula One career, John Lazy, Mika Hockenheim and Ralf Schumacher have all
01:48moved from Formula One to end their seasons in the DTM, and it would be quite a tall order for
01:57David.
01:57He would be driving one of the older cars, one of the 08 machines, and he'd certainly enjoyed his testing,
02:07but when he got to race the DTM car, he found it was very difficult to switch from Formula One.
02:14In his debut, he finished in 13th place.
02:19Up front, though, at that first race, it was Gary Paffet, in the orange and white Mercedes.
02:27There he is, going into the lead, Martin Tomczyk, bits of carbon fly.
02:37The first of many frustrations during 2010 for Dr. Wolfgang Ulrich.
02:43And look at this collision, Mauro Engel there, bouncing off Oliver Jarvis.
02:49Going into the hairpin, braked as normal, turned in, and I got contact from Mauro Engel, and unfortunately it broke
02:55my right front suspension, so it was the end of my race.
02:58Then there was another disaster for Audi. Matthias Ekstrom, who was looking very strong, made a pit stop before the
03:08window actually opened, and that meant he was penalized.
03:12But he has had a good performance, there is no question on that, but unfortunately we called him one lap
03:18too early, in for the pit stop, and if this call is done, you can't redo it anymore, it happens.
03:25Schoolboy error there, Audi ran into trouble with their setup, and struggling with those new tires.
03:31Left rear puncture, cost Martin Tomczyk a possible win, and a big spin out.
03:39And then a second puncture also penalized him.
03:44Unfortunately I had a tire failure, especially on a point at the track at the last corner where you have
03:51to carry the whole tire around, and you knew already that the race will be gone for you.
03:58Disappointment for Tomczyk, Mercedes appeared to have the race fully under control, especially as Alexandre Pema in the blue Audi
04:07started struggling with the tire problems.
04:10There he is. The Audi drivers were ordered to ease off, so Mercedes pounced thirsty for victory.
04:22Gary Pappet, who had won the final race of the previous season, was in control.
04:31Bit of team tactics going on.
04:34Bruno got a better exit out of turn two towards the end, and I don't want to have a crash
04:39with a teammate fighting for second place, because third is a great result in a year old car, it's like
04:46a victory anyway.
04:47Jamie Green at Spengler started the season very well indeed.
04:52I'm quite satisfied today with this result, I'm very satisfied actually, it's my best season start since I am in
04:58DTM, so I'm very happy.
05:01So the DTM season opener at Hockenheim was a Mercedes exhibition.
05:06Pappet, Spengler, Green and De Resta, perfect start for Gary Pappet.
05:13Last year, I didn't finish the first race, I got no points, so it's a much better start than last
05:18year, and hopefully we can go on and fight for more race wins and the championship hopefully.
05:23So the trophies are handed out, but it all started so well for Gary Pappet.
05:37New venue for round two of the series, Valencia in Spain.
05:46And this was a good result for Matthias Ekstrom, there he is, celebrating, so it was Mercedes Benz won, Audi
05:54won.
05:55In the end, to have a break for one and a half year with no victory, then it's really nice
05:59to get one.
06:01It was a comfortable lights to flag triumph for Ekstrom, prompting good celebrations on the Audi pit wall.
06:08The disaster in Hockenheim was already forgotten, and maybe the tyre problems fixed, or nearly fixed.
06:17A big problem though for Martin Tomczyk finished second, but a very small error in the paperwork meant that he
06:26was subsequently disqualified.
06:31Spanish Audi fans had plenty to celebrate in Valencia.
06:35Rookie driver Miguel Molina for Audi was a PR hit with the crowds, but also was very fast too.
06:45This, Molina, with Pappet.
06:49Yeah, it was a fight. Yeah, I think it was a good fight, but a little bit of contact.
06:55He touched me in the last lap, but anyway, it's a race and we try to continue through this lane.
07:03It wasn't the only moment of contact for Pappet. Shortly after the start, he had her coming together with Alexandra
07:09Prima in the blue Audi.
07:12And I think we can see that on board from the camera of Miguel Molina. There it is.
07:21So, Gary Pappet won the opening race, but could do no better than seventh here.
07:29But it was all typical DTM action.
07:36On the first lap, Alex Prima was pushing really hard and pushed me wide in a few corners and pushed
07:41me off the track.
07:41So, it was pretty disappointing. I lost a few more places because of that.
07:46And then, yeah, I struggled with the balance of the car for the whole race, really. It was quite tough.
07:50For sure, we had some contact and even on the back straight, he just pushed me on the grass and
07:55it was not his normal line.
07:58So, for me, it's a bit tricky, but I think we have to see that on the video.
08:03Yeah, Prima, the former Le Mans endurance series champion, tried everything he knew to get past Bruno Spengler.
08:10There he is pushing really hard, but he just couldn't find a way around.
08:15There is Ekstrom with Tomczyk right behind him.
08:22So, Ekstrom was the winner from Bruno Spengler with Alexandra Prima classified in third place.
08:31We have done a strong team effort scene. We have seen quite some artists in the top ten.
08:38And therefore, I am quite happy that we could recover after the not so easy race in Hockenheim.
08:45Confirmation there of the result. Ekstrom from Spengler, but Spengler was in the lead of the championship.
08:53There is Ekstrom, and there is Spengler.
08:59Leading the championship after two races. This never happened to me after two races because I was always quite unlucky
09:06in the first two races of the DTM championships.
09:09But now it's a quite nice feeling, but it's still a very long championship.
09:12So I'm just going to concentrate 200% for race after race, and then we see where we are at
09:16the end.
09:17Two races down, but still nine to go.
09:21The champagne sprayed on the podium.
09:26There was a bumper crowd of almost 80,000 people at the Eurospeedway Lauschitz, and we saw a thrilling third
09:35race of the season.
09:37Although there was this multi-car pileup in turn five, which was destined to shape the course of the race.
09:43Premat, Scheider, Ekstrom, and Coulthard all denied any realistic chance of winning.
09:50Premat parked up in the gravel afterwards, and there were a few angry words.
09:55Matthias Ekstrom retired after just one lap with severe damage to his car.
10:00Oh, there he is, coming in.
10:04And fingers were being pointed at Premat for causing that incident.
10:10Three outers got out in one corner, which is not very good when you try to collect as many points
10:15as you can.
10:16So, I mean, racing keeps going.
10:18I mean, we have to look on the next race in Norrisring and collect some important points there.
10:24David Coulthard was also forced to retire in the yellow Deutsche Post Mercedes.
10:30The safety car guided the field around for three laps.
10:36At the restart, Paul Terrestri in the white Mercedes.
10:40Had some very smart tactics, keeping the pace slow until the last minute, then jumping on the gas.
10:47Spengler, though, had worked out that plan.
10:51Jamie Green was in third place.
10:58I had some trouble to get the tyres working at the restart.
11:02I didn't do a great job of anticipating the restart when the guys ahead of me went.
11:06So I was a bit far behind, which wasn't ideal.
11:09But other than that, I had a good race.
11:12The tall Scotsman Paul Terrestri was pushing very hard indeed, pulling away from Bruno Spengler.
11:18Racing's never boring.
11:19Anything can happen, safety cars and whatever.
11:23No, you never feel totally comfortable.
11:25But I was counting down the laps and the car was good to drive.
11:29So, you know, I was in a comfortable situation.
11:31But then Paul made his second pit stop.
11:36Keep an eye out for the man on the left rear of the car.
11:41The Ravel gun seizes up.
11:44Paul an agonising eight seconds in the pits.
11:49Almost an eternity in the DTM.
11:53Just a lap later, Bruno Spengler came in for his second stop.
11:57It was a very smooth service for him.
12:00Terrestri coming down the home straight.
12:03But Spengler rejoined ahead of him.
12:06That's racing.
12:07I'm really, really happy today for myself and for the team.
12:09And leading the championship with nine points.
12:12This is also great.
12:13But I'm not going to think too much about this.
12:15And starting from tomorrow on, I'm going to concentrate for Norris Ring.
12:18And then we concentrate race by race.
12:20And then we see at the end of the year where we are.
12:22The Canadian benefiting from the misfortune of Paul De Resta won the race at the Euro Speedway.
12:28His first victory in some three years.
12:31De Resta second, Jamie Green in third.
12:35And Audi, well, their best driver was Mike Rockenfeller in fourth place.
12:41Celebrations from Mercedes boss Norbert Hauck.
12:44Pure frustration for Audi.
12:48And the likable French-Canadian was on the podium for the third time in three races.
12:54Yeah, the multilingual Spengler saying, I'm really delighted today.
12:58The last time I won was at the Norris Ring in 2007.
13:02I've returned to the podium today.
13:04I'm unbelievably pleased.
13:06I've got goosebumps thinking about it.
13:10And there is partner Franzi.
13:13And she was really happy because it was also her birthday.
13:18What a great gift from her partner.
13:22Bruno Spengler, the star at Euro Speedway Lausitz.
13:31The fascinating street race of the Norris Ring.
13:35And it could have been Ralf Schumacher's best day in the DTM thus far in two and a half seasons.
13:43But it turned into a personal nightmare.
13:47Well, he had started from pole position.
13:51But he was judged to have jumped the start.
13:55Had this drive-through penalty which cost the six times Formula One Grand Prix winner any possibility of a maiden
14:04DTM victory.
14:08Let's look at that start.
14:09Look at Schumacher.
14:10Went, well, just a fraction before the lights went out.
14:16It was said to be a jump start of just three tenths of a second.
14:21But that didn't bother Jamie Green.
14:28Ralph went a little bit too early before the lights went off.
14:30He moved and then stopped.
14:32I was tempted to go as well because he moved.
14:35But I managed to wait and go when the lights went off.
14:38Green was driving the car in which he won this race in both 08 and 09.
14:44He was going for the triple.
14:49Ekström made a late first stop.
14:54I mean, it's always nice when you do a good drive and today I'm happy with my own performance but
15:00still P2 is not what we were hoping for.
15:03I mean, we were here to go in for the win and finally we managed to come close within half
15:08a second in the end but didn't really pay out in the end so we could win the race.
15:12Green wins from Ekström and Spengler and the 132,000 crowd really enjoyed the afternoon's entertainment.
15:22Paul de Rester though went into a short spin after the start and yet again Alexandra Premat was the man
15:29who seemed to be causing the accident.
15:37When I asked Alex why you ran into the back of me he said I just got too much pick
15:41up at the hairpin and couldn't stop and run into the back of you.
15:44You know, it's quite disappointing when a driver says that to you and no, he wasn't penalised in any way
15:50as of yet.
15:51You know, I think we need to go and see the stewards because that's unacceptable.
15:54You know, his driving standards this year have been, you know, unbelievable and he's cost a lot of people a
15:58lot of points.
16:00Unhappy Paul de Rester. Championship points looked on the cards at one stage for David Coulthard in his two-year
16:07-old Mercedes.
16:08The ex-Formula 1 ace showed something approaching rallying skills at times as he worked his way past Marcus Winklehock
16:16at the Grundig Bend.
16:18However, his joy on that very good overtaking manoeuvre was short-lived.
16:23Not much later Martin Tomczyk made his move, there it goes, and Winklehock reckoned he could take revenge on Coulthard
16:31at the same time.
16:32The clash actually caused David's door to start falling off, there it goes, and he was consigned to a 13th
16:40place finish.
16:42Hans-Jürgen Abt urged Ekstrom on with everything he had, but nothing could stop Mercedes claiming a victory at the
16:51Norris Ring for an eighth time in a row.
16:54Jamie Green registered a remarkable personal triumph, winning the race for a third of time.
17:02Once Matthias got ahead of Bruno, he was slightly quicker than me and started to catch me, and that made
17:07the last ten laps really, really tough.
17:10In terms of the championship, Green and Ekstrom were now Bruno Spengler's chief rivals, although the Canadian was enjoying his
17:17best ever start to the DTM, only dropping eight points in the first four races.
17:22The cars returned to race action some five weeks later at the Nürburgring.
17:30The German Sports University in Cologne.
17:34Prior to the race at the Nürburgring, Bruno Spengler and Mike Rockenfeller for Audi reported for a performance diagnostics test.
17:44Championship leader Spengler's fitness programme focused on stamina and balance.
17:49With Rockenfeller concentrating on muscle tone and power.
17:54Closely observed by the sports science professionals, the pair worked out on a variety of equipment, with the results subject
18:01to computer analysis and evaluation.
18:04It's really important because it's quite intense to do a race, especially in DTM, because it's really hot in the
18:13car and, you know, we reach 3G in the corner under braking as well.
18:19That means, yeah, you have to have a strong neck and really good, you know, stomach muscles to really hold
18:27your position in the car.
18:28And that's why it's really important that you can push 100% throughout the whole race.
18:34As far as the race was concerned, it was Matthias Ekstrom who started from the pole with Bruno Spengler on
18:41his left.
18:42But the start was a disaster for Ekstrom. Spengler shot past him in the very first turn. An attempt to
18:49brake late on the outside just made the situation worse for the Swede, who slid all the way back to
18:557th position. A disaster.
18:59Yeah, I had a bad start off the line, then I braked for the first corner. I didn't get the
19:03gear down as I want and then I locked the front wheel and then it was a big mess.
19:07And then the first couple of corners it was a bit wet and damp and then I lost some more
19:11spots so it was really bad. And then after this we were also slow.
19:16And it wasn't any better for David Coulthard. He initially stalled there, you see him right at the back and
19:23then he drove his C-class into the thick of an accident caused by Susie Stoddard.
19:34Eventually, the former Grand Prix ace battled his way back to 10th position.
19:39Well, first of all, a bit embarrassing. I stalled at the start, so I was last going into the first
19:43corner. A long way behind everyone else, but there was an incident and for some reason I followed the crash
19:50into the gravel, which was a bit silly.
19:52The race ended right there for Susie Stoddard and indeed Marcus Winklehot, who'd had a very bad start to his
19:59season.
20:00The Mercedes trio of Spengler, Green and Diresta led the field, followed by Timo Scheider, who was recovering from some
20:08personal problems at the start of the season.
20:11Green in the light blue Mercedes ran wide on the last turn, allowing Diresta to seize second place.
20:18The next incident was a tangle between drivers in similar types of car and this time it was Premat and
20:25Oliver Jarvis.
20:27And maybe it was the fault of Jarvis. Just watch this.
20:34The two Audi's clash. Premat goes off.
20:37I can only apologise to Alex and Team Phoenix for that. It was not intentional and I was surprised actually
20:43what happened, but unfortunately these things happened in races.
20:46The outstanding driver of the day came from Bruno Spengler with a supremely confident and controlled race to take the
20:52victory.
20:53Diresta and Paffet wrapped up a Mercedes. One, two, three.
20:59I'm very, very happy about the race today. I mean, it's a very special victory for me and also for
21:03the team, as you said, because it's number 100, victory number 100 since the new DTM, since we're racing against
21:09Audi.
21:09So I'm very happy that I got that for Mercedes. Makes me very proud.
21:13So, four Mercedes drivers now holding the top four spots in the standing. And that was a real headache for
21:20Audi. By contrast, there were few headaches for Mercedes.
21:23They would only be caused by the celebrations.
21:27Next stop, Zandvoort in Holland.
21:30The trophy held high by Spengler, pulling away at the head of the table.
21:40The 08 and 09 DTM champion Timo Scheider started from pole in Zandvoort, but his start was catastrophic.
21:50And Mercedes, once again, took full advantage of an Audi problem. Scheider dropped all the way back to 10th place.
21:59And it was a horrible sense of deja vu for the Audi crew. The same fate had reformed Matthias Ekstrom
22:06at the Nürburgring.
22:07And he, there, of course, had thrown away any chance of victory.
22:10And Scheider normally makes brilliant getaways. What had gone wrong?
22:15The start was definitely my mistake and it was just my fault. Nothing mechanical or technical-wise.
22:23First chinks in the championship hopes of Bruno Spengler.
22:29Started from 7th and got involved with a number of the Audis.
22:34Audi's pit stop strategy scene, mainly designed to prevent Spengler extending his lead in the championship.
22:39Spengler only just escaped a trap as Scheider came in for his first stop and Molina held him up.
22:48Audi did a great strategy to avoid me to come to the front because I was quite quicker than all
22:53these guys.
22:54A few laps from the end, the championship leader made his move.
22:58Adiman Rockenfeller left the tiniest of gaps, but there was no way it could work out without some contact.
23:06Rockenfeller barged off the track.
23:12The way I saw it from inside the car was quite clear-cut.
23:16I drove defensively in turn eight.
23:19It was tight on the inside. There might have been room for half a car.
23:23I turned in and I was certain Bruno couldn't get alongside me because there just wasn't room.
23:28I was hit at the back and I went into a spin just before turning in.
23:32I think the situation was relatively clear-cut.
23:38The stewards saw it as a normal racing incident, the decision not accepted gracefully by everyone.
23:44Gary Poffitt took the victory from Paul de Resta. It was Poffitt's second win of the year.
23:50Mercedes fit in six races.
23:54No, it's never boring when you win. You know, there's always small feelings you have with the car, vibrations, things
23:59that happen, so they keep you on your toes.
24:01And you've got to keep focused. You can't relax too much.
24:03You know, if you relax too much, you make a mistake and you go off. So you have to be
24:06concentrated the whole time.
24:08But I didn't have too much to do other than drive around.
24:12Despite his terrible start, Timo Scheider showed he was really back in the speed.
24:17He finished third, his best result of the season.
24:20Six races gone, but only one Audi there in the top five.
24:27Mercedes were dominating the series as everybody got ready for quite a summer break and then off to Brands Hatch.
24:45Well, at Brands Hatch, two mates together.
24:49Martin Brundle got to drive David Coulthard's DTM car.
24:54Quite a bit of pressure on the former Grand Prix Ace.
24:57To be honest, that was a lot of pressure at a DTM event with David Coulthard sitting beside me.
25:02Never been in the car in my life. Cold tyres, cold brakes.
25:04This track is so small and so technical. That's quite a lot of pressure. A lot to ask.
25:11But of course, the 51 year old has a lot of success with a roof over his head.
25:15He won Le Mans for the silk cut Jaguar team in the past.
25:21And seemed to enjoy driving a DTM machine.
25:29We've driven each other in some two-seater Formula One cars in the past.
25:33So I trust Martin, he's got a lot of experience.
25:36When you go out, cold car, you don't know the car, you switch it on and where is everything?
25:41So it takes more than the few laps he's done to get settled.
25:48Just listening to David, we often travel together to the, we work for BBC in F1.
25:53And he's always so enthusiastic and it's really got me going and giving me the bug again.
25:58Victory in England went to another Scotsman, Paul DiResta.
26:03His season was really kicking off.
26:05Spengler finished second, defending his lead in the standings.
26:10But DiResta's first win of the season by seven and a half seconds was sensational.
26:16Spengler second, Timo Scheider in third place.
26:21But young Paul was certainly in a class of his own around the short Brands Hatch track.
26:31When you've got the car behind you, you're able to manage this and it's something I had today
26:36and I must thank them extremely very much for giving me that car.
26:41Championship leader Bruno Spengler is no fan of the short, twisty Brands circuit,
26:46but his strategy was excellent.
26:48That's how he managed to come out in front of Scheider after completing his second pit stop.
26:54Defending champion on the Black Audi was in before Spengler on both occasions,
26:58but he was never able to make his fresh tyres really count.
27:02Scheider, after Ekstrom's retirement, the only remaining Audi driver
27:06with any real chance of influencing the outcome in the championship.
27:16David Coulthard ultimately finished in 12th place.
27:21He needn't have bothered with this overtaking manoeuvre over the luckless Marcus Winklehock,
27:27although his lap times pointed to a much better result.
27:31The good work was undone by a jump start, prompting a spot of humour from the Scot.
27:41I was ready to go, so I don't understand why the rest of the grid weren't,
27:44but I felt the clutch start to really bite and I think I would have stalled the engine if I'd
27:49tried to hold it.
27:49So I let go of the clutch and hoped that the lights would change at the same time.
27:53It didn't happen, so obviously sorry for my mistake.
27:56But the day had most certainly belonged to a younger Scot, Paul Diresta.
28:03There he is, taking the chequered flag for his first victory of the year.
28:12We've come very close on a number of occasions to score in a win, but thankfully today we got it
28:18done.
28:18And I suppose the main focus is we got a lot of points and closed the gap again to the
28:22championship lead.
28:23Paul Diresta had taken nine points off Bruno Spenger.
28:28Matthias Ekstrom failed to finish, so Brands Hatch effectively knocked him out of contention for the title.
28:40On then to the Motorsport Arena, Osher Sleben.
28:45Yeah, Paul Diresta was really on a roll.
28:51Came into this race with two seconds and a victory.
28:55Victory looks certain here until again he had a problem with a pit stop.
29:01There he is blasting out.
29:05Jarvis coming by, there is Spengler out in front of him.
29:09But then Paul drove a masterful race.
29:14And was able to re-pass Spengler.
29:17It's difficult to lose a position when you have a comfortable lead when you come in.
29:22But I suppose looking at it, we were able to regain the position.
29:25The guys are trying to do the best job possible.
29:28That problem was at the first stop, this was the second spot, it went much smoother.
29:35And he got out into clean air and really put in some quick lap times, which helped him towards the
29:43checkered flag.
29:43When Bruno and Timo came into pits, we decided to stay out, extended the stint, were able to run great
29:50times, and I'm sure the mistake that was made, they gave me a car that was good enough to do
29:56the times I could to retain that position.
29:59So, yeah, we go on, we work as a team, we lose as a team, and today we won as
30:05a team.
30:05Another Mercedes victory, but it could have been different.
30:08Timo Scheider was in the lead after the second mandatory pit stop, with Spengler just behind him.
30:13But then Scheider's right rear tyre failed and Spengler sailed past.
30:18Scheider limped home to the pits.
30:19The first win of the season was in sight, but instead he finished in 11th place.
30:26The fastest lap of the race was little consolation to Audi.
30:31Cabri got stuck in the tread, and there was a slow puncture.
30:34The performance deteriorated for a few laps, and then the reduced air pressure caused the tyre to explode, robbing Timo
30:42of the chance of victory.
30:43It was very disappointing.
30:46It was a good battle for third place between Ekstrom and Gary Paffet.
30:53But Ekstrom just didn't have quite enough speed in his car.
30:58In the last thing I found out how to drive a little different to make the car drive better, but
31:04still P3 is okay.
31:07It's not fantastic, so we only have to analyse and improve for the next one.
31:12Paffet might have had a better result had he not started down in a low tenth position, which he couldn't
31:19really explain.
31:21Here he is battling with Martin Tomczyk.
31:25All got a bit physical.
31:27I think I've seen this at least once nearly every race, and no penalties have been given, so I find
31:31it quite strange and quite inconsistent.
31:36Paffet again with fewer points than he would have liked.
31:39Paul de Resta scored a maximum for that second race in a row.
31:42Spengler on the podium for the seventh time in eight races.
31:46Ekstrom third place was no consolation for Audi.
31:51The championship was turning into a Spengler versus de Resta tussle, although Gary Paffet was still in with a slight
31:58chance.
31:59I'm still happy of these eight points today. It was very important.
32:01And we keep on fighting. I'm looking forward to the next races.
32:04We are leading the championship and we push very hard to win this championship.
32:09So three more races to go.
32:11Hockenheim followed by Adria in Italy and then Shanghai.
32:17It was going to be very tight indeed.
32:26A good news day at Hockenheim.
32:29The announcement that BMW would be back in the DTM in 2012.
32:36There's the outgoing BMW boss, Dr. Mario Tyson, making the announcement.
32:47For 2012, of course, there will be very different technical regulations.
32:55Well, it's a fantastic day for us. I think for the fans as well.
32:59DTM is the platform in European touring car racing.
33:03And the prospect to have these cars running in Asia and in the US as well is just great.
33:11We are very excited about the decision and we are really looking forward to a strong season 2012.
33:18Yeah, but that's quite a way off.
33:21Everyone was focusing on this race.
33:24The black car of Timo Scheider on the pole.
33:27And followed at the start through the first turn by Mike Rockenfeller, then Paffet, Premat and Diresta.
33:33No trouble early on.
33:35But then there was a huge pile up at the new shortcut.
33:40And it eliminated at least a third of the field.
33:46Bruno Spengler 11th in qualifying.
33:49This was the incident.
33:52Cars going absolutely everywhere.
33:55Look at that.
33:56Like a dodgems track.
33:58Ralph Schumacher was out.
34:00So was David Coulthard.
34:05Following the restart, Timo Scheider led from Rockenfeller.
34:09Gary Paffet and Paul Diresta.
34:12Only 12 cars remaining.
34:14Ekstrom, bad luck again for the Swede.
34:17And he retired only seven laps into the race with broken suspension.
34:22Gary Paffet.
34:24He was following a conservative strategy.
34:26He was the first of the leading drivers to pit.
34:29He was followed by Jamie Green.
34:31The best of the drivers in a year old car.
34:34There was this incident here with Premat.
34:36And that was a drive-through penalty for Green.
34:41But it was even worse for Bruno Spengler.
34:45He was forced to park up the C-Class after 22 laps.
34:49Some problems in the rear transmission of the car.
34:55And Paul Diresta was heading for a trio of victories.
35:02Excellent strategy.
35:04Great speed.
35:05Here he comes in for his pit stop.
35:08Hopefully it will be nice and smooth.
35:13The Dunlops go on and then Paul blasted away.
35:19It's good that we managed to stay out that long.
35:22You know, people have difficulties keeping the tyres going.
35:26But today, as I said, the set-up was good.
35:28We were quickest in warm-up this morning.
35:30And managed to keep that momentum going into the race.
35:33Paul Diresta made his second pit stop at the very last moment.
35:37And rejoined right there.
35:39Ahead of Timo Scheider and Mike Rockenfella.
35:42Scheider, champion for the past two years.
35:44He simply could not find a way past the man who was really on a big roll.
35:50He deserved it because they did a better job today.
35:53And I drove my own speed.
35:54My speed we had today with our car.
35:57And, yeah, that's like it is.
35:59Still P2 is something okay and something nice in front of the German crowds.
36:04So, Paul Diresta scored three wins in a row.
36:07And the last time someone did that was back in 1993.
36:11It was Niccolarini, the Italian, in an Alfa Romeo.
36:17The fireworks exploded.
36:20And certainly Paul Diresta had exploded back into a chance of winning the championship.
36:34Adria, the penultimate round of the championship, situated some 60 kilometres to the south of Venice.
36:43The last time the DTM had visited the tricky track was some seven years earlier.
36:50Gary Pathet, one of the few drivers who remembered it.
36:54Bruno Spengler started from second on the grid and roared into the lead with Paul Diresta struggling back in sixth
37:00place.
37:02And matters worsen for the Scott on the first lap as a result of attack by Mike Rockenfella there.
37:08He spins off in the wet conditions.
37:13Suddenly, oh, and a massive accident.
37:15That was Alexandra Premat.
37:18Amazingly, the Frenchman climbed out of that with just a sore neck.
37:25There you see it again, the car literally exploding.
37:31Work on the cars was permitted prior to the restart, which took some 20 minutes.
37:41Then Bruno Spengler took the lead from Gary Pathet and Jamie Green.
37:47But Timo Scheider, starting from way back in 15th, was on a charge.
37:53More problems for Diresta.
37:55Look underneath his car.
37:57Gary Pathet also had this rare spin.
38:01So, Timo Scheider was in the lead, although he was yet to pit.
38:06There was another incident involving Diresta, who was attacked, there it is, by Miguel Molina.
38:16The Spaniard's suspension broke.
38:19And Paul had to crawl home.
38:21It was not a good day for the Scott.
38:26After his second stop, Gary Pathet rejoined ahead of Bruno Spengler, but behind Timo Scheider.
38:35And that's the way it finished.
38:38And that's the way it finished.
38:38Paffet put himself back in with a championship chance.
38:43Timo Scheider certainly the star of the day.
38:47But Paul Diresta, he limped home in ninth place.
38:51No championship points at all.
38:53As Timo Scheider celebrated, well, certainly it was back to advantage, Bruno Spengler.
39:06So, Audi had won only their second race of the season.
39:11Starting from P15 and coming in first is an awesome feeling, definitely.
39:18It was quite emotional the last two laps when I saw it and I thought that it may be possible
39:24to win the race.
39:25And I got the last lap information on my pit board and then I saw the checkered flag and it
39:29was an awesome feeling.
39:31Well, tension was certainly running high, only nine points covering the top three in the championship.
39:38Well, it's close and it will go into the last race.
39:40But it's difficult when it's not your mistake.
39:44And, you know, the officials really need to get a grip of what went on because, you know, action needs
39:49taken.
39:50Bruno Spengler went to Shanghai in China with his destiny in his own hands.
39:58It was quite a trip into the unknown, a brand new street circuit in Shanghai.
40:05This huge city of some 20 million people in China.
40:11There was a new local hero, Daryl O. Young, but he put it into the wall.
40:17And there was a massive shunt for Timo Scheider.
40:20And Bruno Spengler, he was having problems too.
40:23I did a mistake in qualifying, which costed us, for sure, a top five.
40:29I mean, I tried to brake a little bit later. We had a good pace.
40:32In qualifying, as always, you always try to find a few meters on braking.
40:37Spengler then at the back. Paul de Resta, though, was on the pole.
40:42Fellow driver from Mercedes, Gary Paffet, was alongside him.
40:46It was looking good for de Resta.
40:49The start was something of an unusual affair because of all the accidents in qualifying.
40:56It was decided to actually start the race under the safety car.
41:02And you can see how narrow some sections of the track were.
41:07The race was also limited to a maximum of one hour.
41:13Finally, the green flags came out.
41:16The big showdown in Shanghai was go.
41:21But no incidents in the early laps.
41:23De Resta in the lead.
41:24It was going well for him.
41:25Paffet second.
41:26Green third.
41:28Britons one, two and three in Mercedes-Benz.
41:31Then it was Timo Scheider.
41:35Paul de Resta, though, had another pit stop problem.
41:40Another jammed wrench.
41:42That lost him a couple of seconds or so.
41:45And it helped Gary Paffet into the lead of the race.
41:54Frankie Cheng, the Chinese regular in the series.
42:00He was given a penalty for speeding in the pit lane.
42:05So, Cheng would finish in 15th place.
42:08But he enjoyed his first year in the DTM.
42:10Oliver Jarvis, one of the few drivers to pull off a good overtaking manoeuvre
42:14on this very tricky surface.
42:16But then he got some tyre damage.
42:22Spengler was not anywhere near the points.
42:25The Championship title was slipping away from him.
42:28It was going in the favour of Paul de Resta on this very bumpy track indeed.
42:34But it all finished like this.
42:37Rockefeller and Susie Starter coming into contact.
42:41Blocking the track.
42:42Spengler there to a halt.
42:45And indeed his Championship hopes had gone right there.
42:49The race was stopped.
42:51It had run 75% so it was four points.
42:54And that made Paul de Resta, the 2010 DTM champion.
43:00And he certainly knew it.
43:02The team was celebrating.
43:07There, the final result.
43:09Paffet, Duresta, Scheider, Tomczyk and Molina.
43:12That's the top five.
43:14And it was a good way to end the season for Gary Paffet.
43:19It feels really good.
43:20I mean winning a race in the DTM is pretty special anyway.
43:23But winning at such an amazing venue like this on a circuit that's been problematic and dangerous and difficult all
43:31weekend.
43:31It's great to come out of the race as Victor and in what in the end was a fairly comfortable
43:38race actually.
43:40Paul de Resta absolutely overjoyed.
43:43There he is with girlfriend Laura.
43:44His first DTM Championship crown after a tight and memorable season.
43:49Mercedes-Benz top of the pile for the first time in four years.
43:55It was exceptional for us.
43:57If you are one, two, three in the last, after the last race, then it's just fantastic.
44:03Paul de Resta deserves it.
44:04He has more points.
44:05He's a very good champion.
44:07Yeah, it's great.
44:09Fantastic feeling.
44:10One that I'm going to enjoy for a long time with my team, with my family, all the supporters that
44:16have been part of this journey to get in this championship.
44:20A lot of hard work this year went into it.
44:22We put up a massive fight from the midpoint after we got off to a bad start.
44:27But yeah, we'll just enjoy the moments and try and go through the night.
44:31Hopefully not too messy.
44:34And we expect Paul de Resta to have a full time Formula One ride in 2011.
44:40But right now, he's the DTM Champion 2010.
44:54Once again in 2010, the DTM had served up some of the best international racing available.
45:02It had been an excellent season.
45:04Gary Paffitt starting the season well.
45:07Then it swung in the favour of Bruno Spengler.
45:11Then we had the strong run in the middle of the year.
45:14Two seconds and then three first places, which put Paul de Resta at the top of the title.
45:20Then, suddenly, Spengler was back in the lead with one race to go.
45:24But ultimately, the winner was Paul de Resta.
45:29From me, Andrew Marriott, it's goodbye.
45:32Until next season.
45:46You're my personal transcendental experience.
46:00You're my experience.
46:04You're my experience.
