00:30Hello, welcome to Catalonia in Barcelona, Osho Slavin, Nürburgring this weekend, Sanford, enjoy the princess indie circuit, Horkenheim, Norse Ring
00:38Race, have fun while watching Le Mans, a wonderful place, Eurospit Bay Lausitz.
02:00And a new look for 2006. Gone was Opel, but the great rivals from the 30s, Auto Union, now of
02:10course called Audi, and Mercedes-Benz would go head-to-head with 10 cars each.
02:18New teams, and indeed new drivers too, including, for the first time since 1991, two lady drivers. More of that
02:27later.
02:28But the action started on the warm-up lap. Jamie Green, the pole sitter, in the Mercedes-Benz, going off
02:35in a straight line trying to warm up his tyres.
02:38And for Green, it was a terrible start to what was a difficult season.
02:46So, into the lead on the first lap. Yes, it was the old master himself, Bert Schneider.
02:52Meanwhile, Green had to come into the pits. A disappointing start to his year.
02:58I was losing engine power, even when we went to the grid, and obviously it was impossible to get a
03:06result in the race with this problem.
03:07The team did everything they could on the grid to change some parts on the car and try to solve
03:12the problem, but unfortunately they couldn't solve the problem, and therefore my race was pretty short.
03:19Apart from Bern Schneider, the man benefiting most from Green's misfortune, was Stefan Mooker, the Berlin ace in a 2005
03:27C-class Merc, held off Ekstrom and Frensen to claim second position.
03:34Ekstrom finally got the better of Mooker in the pits, as the Swedes Audi Sport Team App Sportsline crew hustled
03:41their man past his rival.
03:43However, Mooker held third place until the midpoint.
03:48Mooker survived until lap 15, before dropping another place to Tom Christensen on fresh tyres.
03:54He was not the only victim of Christensen's charge from ninth on the starting grid.
04:00Two laps later, Ekstrom was forced to give way to his Audi team-mate.
04:08After the second round of stops, Mooker became increasingly preoccupied with team-mate Alexandros Margaritas.
04:15Margaritas was poised to overtake in turn two, but as you saw, the manoeuvre ended in a collision.
04:21And Mooker finished up with broken suspension.
04:25That made him easy prey for Margaritas and Micah Hackinen, after which he retired.
04:32The same fate befell Ekstrom.
04:34A short time later, he was racing in third, when the right front suspension collapsed.
04:39His spectacular effort to limp back to the pits was ended by a surrender call on the radio.
04:46Thus, third place was handed to Heinz, Harold Frensen and the green and white Veltins Audi.
04:50However, in an effort to keep former Formula One rifle Micah Hacken at bay,
04:55he was close to driving on his wheel rims, as more and more rubber came off with every passing lap.
05:01Bert Schneider had the race under control at every stage.
05:05Apart from a couple of brief spells prompted by the pit stop strategy, he held a secure lead at all
05:10times.
05:11For a short time, it appeared Tom Christensen might be able to mount a challenge,
05:15but that turned out to be a passing illusion.
05:19In the closing stages, Schneider was able to err on the side of caution.
05:24The air horns blared, the flags waved, and the first winner of 2006 was the old master, Bert Schneider.
05:33On Christensen's second, Heinz, Harold Frensen's third, Micah Hackinen and Margaritas finishing the top five.
05:41So, that's the order.
05:42Schneider, Christensen, Frensen, Hackinen, Margaritas, a lazy tom chick.
05:46Schneider, Spengler and Stollard.
05:50Actually, I had a very good start.
05:52I could pass Jamie in before first corner.
05:55I had a little highlight at the Mercedes Tribune with a very dirty circuit.
06:01After this, I was without any problems.
06:05My first one was quite hard because I was pushing really hard to get away from the others.
06:09But after the second pit stop, the car was brilliant, and I just have to bring it home.
06:15S&H Schneider then getting ten points.
06:17Christensen eight, Frensen six, and Hackinen five.
06:20And there, the remaining eight-point scorers.
06:23Bruno Spengler, unlucky.
06:25He'd been very quick in qualifying, suffered a fire.
06:28So, moving on to the second round.
06:32Euro Speedway Lauschitz.
06:35The most easterly of the circuits in which the DTM will be racing in 2006.
06:44So, some 20 drivers are lined up.
06:49The circuit, of course, has the oval, but for the DTM, it's a combination of the oval and the road
06:56course.
06:58The opening race in Hockenheim has showed that this year's grid was extremely evenly matched,
07:03forcing their drivers, their race engineers and tyre specialists from Dunlop
07:08into an even closer corporation.
07:12500 horsepower, remember, with these cars?
07:16Well, the first race may have seen a Mercedes-Benz victory,
07:19but it was looking very good here for Audi.
07:23But Lauschitz, with the Red Bull car there slowing,
07:27Matthias Ekstrom, the former champion who looked in such good shape for victory here,
07:32running out of fuel.
07:36Absolutely desolate from that, Ekstrom at the side of the track.
07:41Let's see the start.
07:43Jamie Green's performance was hardly less disappointing.
07:46Once again, he was unable to translate another excellent pole position into a race victory.
07:53Mika Hakkinen, Matthias Ekstrom and Bernd Schneider all charged past him.
07:58A disastrous start for the Briton.
08:03And there he is, locking up into the first corner.
08:09I was still in the lead when we braked for the first corner,
08:12but then just when I was turning into the corner,
08:14I could see at the corner of my eye Mika arriving,
08:18and, yeah, I didn't close the door on him,
08:20so I went a little bit wide.
08:22Well, I locked the brakes, I went very wide,
08:23and then I lost, you know, three places,
08:26so I was in fourth position,
08:27which was a real shame because it's very hard to overtake here.
08:32Things seem to be going well for Mika Hakkinen after that.
08:35Ekstrom and Schneider were unable to mount a serious challenge
08:39of the fin pulled clear.
08:40In the opening laps, the rest of the field
08:42appeared destined to play no further role in the outcome of the race.
08:46However, the situation changed with Hakkinen's second pit stop.
08:53Problems there for Hakkinen.
08:58Drama with the left rear wheel.
09:02Drama two for this Audi.
09:06Christian Apps having a spectacular incident here.
09:10He accelerates away from the pits,
09:13but the left front wheel has not been correctly put on the car.
09:17It departs company,
09:19rolls into the pit lane,
09:23and there's nowhere for him to go.
09:25Heinz-Harold Frensen
09:27having a bit of a problem with his first pit stop.
09:31He eventually finished in 13th place.
09:34That left Tom Christensen to fly the flag for Audi.
09:38Starting from fifth,
09:39he steadily worked his way up to the front
09:41with a string of great overtaking manoeuvres.
09:44Making up for an average start,
09:46he reeled in the French-Canadian Bruno Spengler to go fifth.
09:50Just a few laps later,
09:51he closed in on Jamie Green,
09:53who was forced into another braking error
09:55and had to make way for his rival.
09:58It was a great race.
09:59It was a busy afternoon where I was starting.
10:02It was needed to have some overtakings,
10:05and at the first stop I got on new tyres,
10:06and at that time I knew I had to pass guys.
10:10First Bruno Spengler and Jamie Green.
10:12Great fights with both of them.
10:13It was very fair.
10:14I enjoyed it very much,
10:15so I had a little bit more grip.
10:17There seemed to be no chance of further progress for the Dane
10:20as Ekstrom and Schneider powered on in the lead.
10:23Jamie Green opted for another go at Mika Hakkinen,
10:26not always in the most gentlemanly way.
10:28But after Ekstrom had stopped,
10:30Green was only allowed a very short time
10:32to contemplate a potential podium finish.
10:35Unimpressed by his cheek and muscling past Hakkinen,
10:38the Mercedes race strategist ordered Green
10:40to move over on the finishing straight
10:42and allow the Finn home in third place.
10:45Maximum points again for Bernd Schneider.
10:47At this early stage it appears Tom Christensen
10:50would be his only serious rival in 06.
10:53So, two out of two for Bernd Schneider,
10:56Christensen second, Hakkinen third,
10:57then Green, Spengler, Margaritas,
10:59Lazy, Tomczyk, Schneider and Kaffer.
11:03I'm very satisfied with the race.
11:05I had a good start, was good fighting with Matthias Ekstrom.
11:11And after the pit stop I came in front,
11:13the strategy was perfect of my team
11:15and I have to say thank you very much
11:17for the help for this second victory in the second race.
11:22So, Bernd Schneider, 20 maximum points there.
11:25Christensen second, Hakkinen third,
11:27Margaritas in fourth place.
11:29Moving on then to round three
11:32at Oschersleben,
11:35the second of the newer German circuits.
11:41So, what would happen here?
11:43We'd had two Mercedes victories.
11:45Good Audi fight back.
11:48Because of new rules in 2006,
11:51Jamie Green, Mika Hakkinen, Bruno Spengler
11:54and indeed Bernd Schneider
11:55all started with an extra 10 kilograms.
11:59These four being the members
12:01of the top HWA Mercedes-Benz squad.
12:05And here's an interesting statistic.
12:08Bernd Schneider won the first two races of 06.
12:10Jamie Green, playing pole position for both,
12:13and Bruno Spengler set the fastest lap
12:15on both occasions.
12:17Second place at the first two events,
12:19meant a better start for Audi
12:20than in preceding years.
12:23Poleman, Tom Christensen,
12:26the Le Mans veteran
12:27and multi-winner,
12:29making a fine start.
12:32On board with Ekstrom.
12:36Green alongside Spengler.
12:41Here's an on-board replay
12:42from Mika Hakkinen.
12:44Watch what happens
12:45to Jamie Green this time.
12:47Really a little bit
12:48asleep at the wheel
12:49and he loses momentum.
12:51Let's hear now
12:52from the man from Leicester.
12:54My start wasn't great,
12:55to be honest.
12:55My reaction wasn't perfect
12:57when the lights went out
12:58and then after I got
12:59a little bit of wheel spin as well,
13:00so two reasons why it wasn't good.
13:03Yeah, which is very disappointing
13:04because I think my speed
13:05was pretty strong in the race
13:06and I was very close
13:08to Bruno for the whole race
13:09but just not able
13:10to get ahead
13:11because there's no real
13:12overtaking chances
13:13on this track.
13:15Christensen started
13:16to pull clear
13:17of Spengler and Green.
13:18The leading group
13:19went down no further
13:20than to Frankston in fourth
13:22because the rest of the field
13:23was busy battling
13:24for positions
13:25and some contact.
13:27Christian at the first casualty
13:28after a coming together
13:30with Frank Stippler.
13:32Christensen held
13:33all the trump cards
13:34and looked like mounting
13:35a serious challenge
13:36to Bern Schneider
13:37at the top of the championship
13:38as the series leader
13:39was running
13:40in a lowly eighth place
13:41forced to watch the Dane
13:43from long range
13:44as he made
13:45his first pit stop.
13:49Reid and Spengler
13:50opted for an alternative
13:51tyre strategy
13:52staying out
13:53for 14 laps
13:54before switching
13:55onto fresh rubber.
13:59Matthias Ekstrom
14:00pitted after nine laps
14:02three laps after
14:03Bern Schneider.
14:04Now it became clear
14:05that Schneider's choice
14:06of an early stop
14:07was the better idea.
14:09Ekstrom lost a lot of ground
14:10and Schneider had made up
14:12his way to fifth place.
14:14A short time later
14:15he had caught up
14:16with Heinz Harald Frensen
14:17but overtaking simply
14:18looked impossible
14:19on this narrow circuit.
14:21Frensen proved
14:22an incredibly tough
14:24knock to crack.
14:26The same applied
14:27to Tom Christensen
14:28when it came
14:29to Daniel La Rosa
14:30the youngest man
14:31in the championship
14:32in the orange car there.
14:38Time for a strategic decision.
14:40An extremely early
14:42second stop
14:42was the chosen method
14:43to dispense with La Rosa
14:45and, as it turned out,
14:47to keep Spengler at bay.
14:48Mercedes had the same idea
14:50but from a completely
14:51different race perspective.
14:52The cumulative effect
14:54no change
14:54in the race order.
14:56I mean it was
14:57quite exciting
14:57especially on the pit stop situation.
15:00At one point
15:01I could maybe
15:01a little bit
15:02catch up on Tom
15:03and then we had
15:04a pit stop together
15:05and it was really
15:05near out of the pit lane
15:06I mean because
15:07we had really
15:07at the same time
15:08the pit stop
15:08so I was really
15:09near to him
15:10and then he was able
15:10to pull away
15:11a little bit from me
15:12so he was a little bit quicker.
15:14The situation
15:15would never have risen
15:16in the first place
15:17if Rosa and Mucca
15:18had allowed Christensen
15:19to pass
15:19with the same politeness
15:20they later showed
15:21to fellow Mercedes-man
15:23Jamie Green
15:26Frenchen, Schneider
15:27and Ekström
15:27came through
15:28to take 4th, 5th
15:29and 6th places.
15:30Margaritas
15:31was forced to retire
15:32before the end.
15:33Tom Christensen
15:34had no technical problems
15:35on his car
15:36and duly
15:37crossed the start line
15:38ahead of Bruno Spengler
15:40and Jamie Green.
15:42Christensen
15:42then the winner
15:43Spengler 2nd
15:44Green 3rd
15:45and Schneider
15:46only 5th.
15:49It was a perfect weekend
15:50for Audi
15:52for the team
15:52for myself
15:53pole position
15:54and control the race
15:56but there was of course
15:58some very key moments.
16:00Now at the top
16:01of the table
16:01only 2 points
16:02separated the leading 2.
16:04Christensen now leading
16:05from Schneider
16:06with 24
16:06and Spengler
16:07had moved up
16:08to 3rd place.
16:12Round 4
16:13the DTM
16:14making a comeback
16:15in Britain
16:16at Brands Hatch
16:18in the days
16:19when it was called
16:20the ITC
16:21of course
16:21they raced
16:22at Donington Park
16:23in 2003
16:24and 2004.
16:27The chosen circuit
16:28was the indie version
16:30of the little
16:301.3 mile long track
16:331.9 metres
16:3982 laps
16:40coming up.
16:42The teams
16:43had already tested
16:44at the circuit
16:45here's some images
16:46of course
16:46of some of the
16:47great icons
16:48of London
16:49Brands Hatch
16:50lies to the south
16:51of the capital
16:52some 20 odd miles
16:54welcome
16:55to the race
16:57and indeed
16:57British fans
16:58have certainly embraced
17:00the arrival
17:01of the DTM
17:02back
17:02on British shores.
17:05Tom Christensen
17:07was the fastest
17:07man in qualifying
17:09here he is
17:11off the line
17:12ahead of
17:13Jamie Green
17:14back down the field
17:15Daniel O'Rosa's
17:16orange Mercedes
17:17failed to get off
17:18the start line
17:19correctly
17:19causing a knock-on
17:21effect behind him
17:22Susie Stoddard
17:23was boxed in
17:24and had to watch
17:25as her lady rival
17:27Vanina X
17:27roared by
17:34Frank Stippler
17:36had an even worse
17:36tie of it
17:37crashing into the
17:38tie wall
17:39on lap 2
17:41Frentzen and
17:41Mika Hakkinen
17:42were the first
17:43to make their
17:43mandatory pit stops
17:44on lap 6
17:46that led to
17:47a strange scene
17:48out of the blue
17:49the refuelling can
17:51hitched a ride
17:52on the Finns
17:53AMG Mercedes
17:56Mika then
17:57swerving with the car
17:58to manage to
17:59get rid
17:59of that fuel can
18:00we can see
18:01a replay here
18:02of what happened
18:02maybe Mika
18:04just dropped the clutch
18:05a little bit
18:06too early
18:08shortly afterwards
18:09Hakkinen
18:09cruised past
18:10Frentzen
18:11who was clearly
18:12in trouble
18:12and later
18:13retired from the race
18:16Leader Christensen
18:17left it until
18:17lap 23
18:18for his first
18:19compulsory pit stop
18:20quite a bit later
18:21than rivals
18:21Jamie Green
18:22and Bert Schneider
18:23the app crew
18:24completed their work
18:25to perfection
18:25and their driver's lead
18:27was already big enough
18:28to see him rejoin
18:29the race
18:29ahead of the
18:30Mercedes duo
18:33Green's fresh tyres
18:34however
18:34allowed him to
18:35close the gap
18:36but not make
18:37a pass
18:40that later
18:41applied to
18:42one of his
18:42fellow
18:43Merkmen
18:43Stefan Muka
18:44who had yet
18:45to pit at that
18:46point
18:48there clearly
18:50impeding
18:50Tom Christensen
18:53by comparison
18:54Green had no
18:55trouble
18:55overtaking
18:56Timo Scheider
18:57who politely
18:58moved out of the
18:59way
19:01Christensen
19:02continued to
19:03extend his
19:04advantage
19:04which became
19:05abundantly clear
19:06on lap 26
19:07when he rejoined
19:08the race
19:08after his
19:09second pit stop
19:10Green and
19:11Schneider came
19:11flashing past
19:12a lot later
19:16Ekstrom was the
19:17only man in the
19:17leading group
19:18to opt for a
19:19longer stint
19:19on his second
19:20set of tyres
19:20not a bad idea
19:22as it turned out
19:25two thirds of the
19:26podium places
19:28appeared to be
19:29set in stone
19:30Christensen
19:31comfortably led
19:32from Green
19:32who was pushing
19:33hard but coming
19:34no nearer
19:35he'd probably got
19:36all he could
19:37from his tyres
19:37but his second
19:38place looked in
19:39no danger
19:40as Bern
19:40Schneider was in
19:41no position
19:42to mount a
19:43challenge
19:43he spent almost
19:4430 laps
19:45stuck behind
19:46Timo Scheider
19:47but was unwilling
19:48to take a risk
19:49and throw away
19:50some vital
19:51championship points
19:53as a result
19:54Ekstrom put in
19:55the fastest lap
19:56despite being
19:57on older tyres
19:57following the
19:58second stop
19:59after a full
20:0061 laps
20:01he rejoined
20:02significantly ahead
20:03of Schneider
20:03in third place
20:05but matters were
20:06to get even
20:06better for the
20:07Swede
20:07as just a short
20:08time later
20:09Christensen
20:10was out of
20:11the race
20:13he was even
20:14very conservative
20:14through turn one
20:15never run over
20:16the kerb or anything
20:17and then suddenly
20:20in that corner
20:21going into the
20:22corner
20:22something broke
20:24on the left
20:25front suspension
20:26and that made
20:28the car undrivable
20:29it couldn't turn
20:30right anymore
20:30and suddenly it
20:31just got worse
20:32and worse
20:32and suddenly I
20:32heard another
20:33clunk
20:33and the car
20:35just turned
20:37left
20:39Green's elation
20:40at a potential
20:41first race win
20:42of the season
20:42and first race win
20:43ever in the DTM
20:44failed to last
20:45long
20:45Ekstrom mounted
20:47a dramatic
20:47challenge
20:48on his fresh rubber
20:49while the British
20:50driver's tyres
20:51steadily lost
20:52their grip
20:52and then
20:53he was off
20:54just a driver error
20:56Green
20:56on the grass
20:58the 2004
20:59champion's
21:00first race win
21:01of the season
21:01was never in doubt
21:02after that
21:03Damon Hill
21:05waved the flag
21:05Green came home
21:07a disappointed
21:07second
21:08and Bert Schneider
21:09was third
21:10ahead of Martin
21:10Tomczyk
21:11and Christian Apt
21:12in their Audis
21:16our strategy
21:17for the race
21:17was to be quick
21:19in the end
21:19of the race
21:19and so we was
21:20I was catching
21:21Jamie quite a lot
21:22in the end
21:22and then he made
21:23a mistake
21:24and I could
21:24cruise on to victory
21:25which was very nice
21:26yes indeed
21:28so Bert Schneider
21:29retaking the lead
21:30of the driver's
21:31championship
21:31with 30 points
21:32Christensen on 26
21:33Green 19
21:34Spengler
21:35in fourth place
21:39on then
21:40to a very
21:41special circuit
21:42indeed
21:42one that is
21:44very much
21:44part of the DTM
21:46and one of which
21:47always attracts
21:48a huge crowd
21:49the Norris Ring
21:50the street race
21:52around the Nuremberg
21:54undoubtedly
21:55a highlight
21:56of the DTM
21:57calendar
21:57and it turned out
21:59to be a very
22:00hot weekend
22:01temperatures
22:02over 30 degrees
22:04centigrade
22:06Bern Schneider
22:07had regained
22:07the lead
22:08of the driver's
22:08championship
22:09and Brands Hatch
22:09and was looking
22:10to extend
22:11his advantage
22:11at the halfway
22:12point in the season
22:13Tom Christensen
22:15arrived at the Norris Ring
22:16with a similarly
22:17clear-cut target
22:18namely recovering
22:19the lead
22:20in the standings
22:21from Bern Schneider
22:26the race fans
22:27were looking forward
22:28to a titanic struggle
22:32Jamie Green
22:33on the pole position
22:34again
22:35his third pole
22:36of the season
22:36hoping to score
22:37his first victory
22:38at the start
22:40yes he got it
22:41right this time
22:41Bern Schneider
22:43also was off
22:43quickly
22:44in the red car
22:45and Spengler
22:46Hackenden
22:46and Lacey
22:47all in front
22:48of Matthias Ekstrom
22:49but what would
22:50happen at the
22:51first hairpin
22:52it's always a pinch
22:53point here
22:54at the Norris Ring
22:56and looking down
22:58clearly
22:59Ekstrom
23:00ramming
23:01John Lacey
23:01in the red
23:02Mercedes Benz
23:03Christensen
23:05got involved
23:05with that
23:06and he ran
23:07into Ekstrom
23:07so an early
23:09retirement
23:09for the veteran
23:11former Grand Prix
23:12driver
23:12John Lacey
23:13his suspension
23:14destroyed
23:17Green in the lead
23:18then
23:18from Schneider
23:19Spengler
23:19Hackenden
23:20and Matthias Ekstrom
23:21lap 10
23:22saw the first round
23:23of pit stops
23:24Krom Christensen
23:25was the first man
23:26in for new tyres
23:27the Dane
23:27had no luck
23:28at all
23:28at Brands Hatch
23:29and Fortune
23:30appeared to desert him
23:31here
23:31at the Norris Ring
23:32as well
23:36Jamie Green
23:37however
23:37was having
23:38a very good race
23:39the young Englishman
23:39kept Bern Schneider
23:41at bay
23:41and came out
23:42ahead of the
23:42veteran DTM man
23:44after the first
23:45pit stop
23:50Bruno Spengler
23:51who started
23:52from third
23:53led the field
23:53at this point
23:54after choosing
23:55a completely
23:55different strategy
23:56to his rivals
23:57the young French
23:58Canadian
23:59the 23 year old
24:00opted for a
24:01significantly longer
24:02stint
24:03than the rest
24:03of the leading group
24:04the only man
24:05to stay out
24:06equally long
24:06was Matthias Ekstrom
24:08running second
24:09behind Spengler
24:10at this stage
24:12however
24:13Spengler's stop
24:14returned Jamie Green
24:15to the lead
24:16where he was caught up
24:17in a tussle
24:18with Christian Apt
24:19who was pushing
24:20the rules of racing
24:21to the absolute limit
24:22in the playboy car
24:24he made a big
24:26swerve to the left
24:27and we touched
24:28and I think this was
24:29a bit unnecessary
24:30to be honest
24:31because he was not
24:32in the fight
24:32for the victory
24:33let's see what happened
24:36when I touched the wall
24:37the suspension was damaged
24:38rear suspension
24:39and then
24:40a few laps later
24:41the suspension broke
24:42so I spun around
24:43I was out of the race
24:44so
24:45not my day
24:47bit of disappointment
24:48for Green
24:49but that cleared the way
24:50from Bernd Schneider
24:51although Micah Hakkinen
24:52was now piling on
24:54the pressure
24:54the experienced duo
24:55laid on a thrilling fight
24:57for first place
24:59Schneider in the red car
25:00Hakkinen in the silver machine
25:04but as it so often happens
25:05the pair became
25:06so preoccupied
25:07with each other
25:08they failed to watch out
25:09for the third participant
25:10in this struggle
25:11young Bruno Spengler
25:13the Canadian
25:14stayed out a long time
25:15using a different strategy
25:16that was a very clever call
25:18indeed
25:19as the tactic
25:20was set
25:20to make him a winner
25:22on rejoining the race
25:23Spengler's advantage
25:24was enough
25:25to take him into the lead
25:26much to Bernd Schneider's
25:28displeasure
25:30look at this incident
25:31Daniel La Rosa
25:32canoning into
25:33Susie Stoddard
25:34that brought out
25:35the safety car
25:36when everything
25:37was cleared up
25:38it was still
25:39the French-Canadian
25:40in the lead
25:41from Bernd Schneider
25:42Micah Hakkinen
25:43and Stefan Mooker
25:44the best Audi drivers
25:46Tom Christensen
25:47in a disappointing
25:48fifth place
25:51Bruno Spengler
25:52was naturally
25:53absolutely
25:53ecstatic
25:55and there's
25:56confirmation
25:56of the top tens
25:57Spengler
25:58a first-time winner
26:02I should be third now
26:03so it's quite good
26:04yeah
26:04but anyway
26:05I'm just so happy
26:06to have this race
26:07to have win this race
26:09here in Norris Ring
26:10I think it's the best
26:10atmosphere of the whole season
26:12and it's great to win here
26:13yes
26:14Schneider at the top of the table
26:15with 38 points
26:16Christensen
26:17slipping behind
26:18Spengler up to third
26:20there he is
26:21and the AMG
26:22technical chief
26:23Gerhard Unger
26:23who had decided
26:25to promote him
26:26to the top team
26:27certainly
26:28was vindicated
26:31moving on then
26:32to the
26:33Nürburgring
26:34Germany's most
26:35famous circuit
26:36the second half
26:37of the season
26:37was about to begin
26:39on the 20th of August
26:42this would be
26:43an important race
26:44for Tom Christensen
26:45could the Audi driver
26:47close the gap
26:48the eight-point gap
26:50on Bernd Schneider
26:52meanwhile
26:53very much the home race
26:54for Bernd Schneider
26:55the most successful driver
26:57in the history
26:58of the DTM
26:59and always a great atmosphere
27:01here
27:02at the Nürburgring
27:07but no question about
27:08the man
27:09on the roll
27:10Bruno Spengler
27:12many were surprised
27:13he'd been drafted
27:14into the Mercedes
27:15top squad
27:16and indeed
27:17John Alese
27:18demoted
27:19to the second team
27:20but he was certainly
27:22showing his skill
27:23and talent
27:24well
27:25not typical August weather
27:26rain at the Nürburgring
27:28Spengler on the pole
27:30making a beautiful start
27:31Christensen
27:32gets a nightmare getaway
27:33and he dropped
27:34down the field
27:39into the first hairpin
27:42always drama there
27:43but let's just look
27:44at the replay
27:45Christensen
27:46to the left of the picture
27:47crawling off the line
27:50but soon
27:51the great dame
27:52was starting to speed up
27:53and recovering places
27:54his experience
27:56proved too much
27:56for young Jamie Green
27:57as he moved up
27:58to fourth place
27:59there he goes
28:00down the inside
28:02but at the head
28:03of the field
28:04another youngster
28:04was giving a brilliant
28:05demonstration
28:06of his talent
28:07Bruno Spengler
28:08was certainly
28:09the man of the weekend
28:11he pulled away
28:12from Bernd Schneider
28:14sometimes by as much
28:15as two seconds a lap
28:16when the rain
28:17started to come down
28:20in the stern car
28:22former Formula 1 ace
28:23Sean Olesi
28:24drove a sensational race
28:26moving up to fifth place
28:28at the time of the first pit stops
28:30having started
28:31in 14th position
28:32lap 16
28:33saw the leading trio
28:34come in
28:35for their first mandatory stop
28:36all three of the leaders
28:38switching
28:38from rain tyres
28:39to slicks
28:41Spengler
28:41comfortably retained the lead
28:43and Bernd Schneider
28:43was in second place
28:44ahead of Martin Tomczyk
28:46who was having a good race
28:49Mika Hakkinen's crew
28:51showed exactly
28:52how it should not be done
28:53almost an entire load of fuel
28:55failed to find its way
28:56into the tank
28:57meaning the fin
28:58had to make an additional stop
28:59on the way
29:00to a very disappointing
29:0112th place
29:06Spengler leading then
29:07but more problems
29:09for Tom Christensen
29:11locking up the brakes
29:12seven laps from the finish
29:14and that meant
29:15he had to concede
29:16fourth place
29:17to John Olesi
29:20that of course
29:21played straight into the hands
29:23of Bernd Schneider
29:24the second place
29:25would mean him
29:26extending his championship lead
29:27however
29:28he faced a threat
29:29from Martin Tomczyk
29:31who was only a second back
29:32with two laps to go
29:36Bruno Spengler
29:38recorded his second
29:39successive DTM victory
29:41with a commanding
29:42Leicester flag victory
29:43Bernd Schneider
29:44held on to second
29:45ahead of Martin Tomczyk
29:48and let's check out
29:50those results
29:50yes the second win
29:52for Spengler
29:52Schneider second
29:53Tomczyk, Olesi
29:55and Christensen
29:56in fifth place
29:57I'm going to continue
29:58as I did until now
29:59thinking races after races
30:01and then we will count
30:02the points at the end
30:03of the season
30:03how can I
30:03and there are the points
30:05Spengler
30:06now in second place
30:08Christensen
30:08on equal points
30:10but at the front
30:11it's Bernd Schneider
30:16then it was off
30:17to a non-German racetrack
30:19to Zandvo
30:20once the home
30:21of the Dutch Grand Prix
30:23the circuit by the seaside
30:25the circuit
30:26amongst the dunes
30:27this would be
30:29a popular venue
30:30for the DTM
30:34one of the problems
30:35here can be
30:36sand blowing
30:37onto the circuit
30:38but certainly
30:39the Dunlop engineers
30:40with their Dunlop
30:41SP Sportmax tyre
30:43had got that handled
30:44here we are
30:46down at the beach
30:49the circuit
30:50literally
30:51just the other side
30:52of that bank there
31:02and it was Britain's
31:04Jamie Green
31:05who had claimed
31:06another pole
31:07but yet again
31:09he undid all the good work
31:10and made another
31:12disastrous start
31:13Tom Christensen
31:14Martin Tomczyk
31:15and Matthias Ekstrom
31:16raced past him
31:25let's have a look
31:26from Tom Christensen's
31:28onboard camera
31:29Green
31:30with the green mirrors
31:31appears to go backwards
31:34just a few laps
31:35into the race
31:36the field had clearly
31:37split into two parts
31:38a leading group
31:39comprising
31:40Christensen
31:40Tomczyk
31:41Ekstrom
31:42and Green
31:42and then the rest
31:43with Bernd Schneider's
31:44red Mercedes
31:45in 7th place
31:47the championship leader
31:48finding a way there
31:49past Pierre Caffer
31:50on lap 6
31:52indeed he gave him
31:54a friendly nudge
31:54on the way
31:55rough and tumble
31:56was the order of the day
31:57further down the field
31:58Micah Hackenden
31:59in a tussle
32:00with Christian Abt
32:01and both of them
32:02spun round
32:04it was the stewards view
32:06that the Finn
32:06had caused the problem
32:08and he had
32:09a drive-through penalty
32:10and Abt
32:11was also forced
32:12to retire
32:13by the time Schneider
32:14made his first
32:15compulsory pit stop
32:16on lap 11
32:16Ekstrom Green
32:17and Frensen
32:18were already
32:19on fresh rubber
32:19Schneider had been
32:20targeting the 5th place
32:22held by Frensen
32:23he had closed the gap
32:25on the track
32:25but was unable to pass
32:31leader Christensen
32:32made a lightning quick
32:33pit stop
32:33two laps later
32:34too quick for the man
32:35responsible for the refuelling
32:37he took a tumble
32:38the fuel canister
32:39stayed on the Audi
32:40but just for a short time
32:42there it goes
32:44and it appeared
32:45that the lollipop man
32:46had given the all clear
32:47just a little bit
32:48too early
32:49just don't look at that
32:52the car had only been
32:53stationary for 4 seconds
32:58but generally
32:59good work by the pit crews
33:01was one reason
33:01why an Audi trio
33:03led the field
33:03at the halfway point
33:04of the race
33:05but the leading group
33:06had been expanded
33:07by one
33:08as Schneider
33:08had closed up the gap
33:10now was the time
33:11to think tactically
33:12and devise a strategy
33:13to make the most
33:14of the situation
33:15both Audi and Mercedes
33:17hit on the same idea
33:18the two leading
33:19championship contenders
33:20Christensen and Schneider
33:21made their second pit stops
33:22at the same time
33:24Christensen continued
33:25in the lead
33:26but Schneider
33:27became stuck behind
33:28Ekstrom
33:29in traffic
33:30Ekstrom and Green
33:31had clashed
33:32with considered again
33:33from Spengler's camera
33:34and Green
33:35getting a drive-through penalty
33:36for that incident
33:37shortly before the end
33:40Bern Schneider
33:41demonstrated that
33:42patience can be a virtue
33:43he spent more than
33:4510 laps reeling in Tomczyk
33:47waiting and watching
33:48for his chance
33:48once again
33:49experience
33:50made the vital difference
33:52Christensen
33:53was the only driver
33:54capable of resisting Schneider
33:56although the veteran
33:57extracted the maximum
33:58possible
33:59out of the start
33:59from 7th
34:00second ahead of
34:01Martin Tomczyk
34:02was more than he could
34:03reasonably have expected
34:04beforehand
34:05however
34:06Tom Christensen
34:06fans were the people
34:08most delighted
34:08by the result
34:10Spengler had another
34:11good finish
34:12in fourth place
34:12ahead of Heinz
34:13Harold Frensen
34:15a perfect start
34:16from the front row
34:17and really
34:18the car was good
34:19controlling the pace
34:21was
34:23sort of no problem
34:24at the first
34:25pit stop
34:26the crew was so fast
34:27that they forgot
34:29the can
34:30or the can
34:30was still on board
34:31but you know
34:32a little bit of rinking
34:33and it's off
34:33and then we could
34:34keep going
34:36so Christensen's
34:37challenge was back
34:38on track
34:38now 10 points
34:39behind Bern
34:40Schneider
34:41Bruno Spengler
34:42was still third
34:48so moving on
34:49to another new race
34:51on the calendar
34:52Barcelona
34:53the circuit
34:53of Catalonia
34:57most of the teams
34:58had little data
34:59on the track
35:00but they were all
35:00anticipating
35:01a very good battle
35:04yes it was the
35:05first DTM race
35:06to be held
35:07in Spain
35:08Spain thus
35:09becoming the
35:0916th country
35:10to host the series
35:13going into the race
35:14then
35:14Schneider
35:16in the lead
35:16of the championship
35:17with 50 poor points
35:18Christensen
35:19closing up perhaps
35:20with 44
35:20Spengler
35:21on 39
35:24and in practice
35:26and qualifying
35:26it looks as if
35:27Barcelona
35:28would suit
35:29the four rings
35:30of Audi
35:31Tomczyk
35:32Frensen
35:32and Christensen
35:33all qualifying
35:34very well
35:38let's check out
35:39the start then
35:40off they go
35:41into the lead
35:42it's a Red Bull car
35:43but it's not
35:44Ekstrom
35:45it's Tomczyk
35:46Heinz
35:47and Paul Frensen
35:48in second place
35:54but then
35:55problems
35:56on the first lap
35:56for Audi
35:58Christian Apt
35:59involved in a pileup
36:01just look at that
36:01at the back
36:02Nicholas Kieser
36:03the former
36:04Formula One driver
36:05from Denmark
36:06also involved
36:07in his mayhem
36:08together with
36:09Vanina Hicks
36:10and Pierre Kaffer
36:13and poor
36:14Jamie Green
36:15was also left
36:16with nowhere to go
36:17after the safety
36:18car phase
36:19Audi suffered
36:20another major
36:20setback
36:21when Christensen
36:22was unable
36:23to prevent
36:23Schneider
36:24from taking
36:24third place
36:26the Dane's
36:27subsequent collision
36:28with the Merc
36:29certainly affected
36:30the car
36:31later in the race
36:34Schneider
36:35was now chasing
36:36Frensen
36:36and he forced
36:37the German
36:38veteran into an error
36:39there he goes
36:40wide
36:40and Schneider
36:41goes through
36:43Christensen
36:44needed to find
36:45more speed
36:46but his car
36:46appeared to be
36:47damaged by the
36:48early collision
36:51there he drops
36:52back behind
36:53Matthias Ekstrom
36:54the championship
36:55was starting
36:56to slip away
37:01but Martin Tomczyk
37:03was having a
37:03very good race
37:04he was leading
37:05and had an
37:06error-free pit stop
37:07there he rejoins
37:08the pits
37:09by contrast
37:10Tom Christensen
37:11was preoccupied
37:12by the struggle
37:13by the struggle
37:13with his own vehicle
37:17there another incident
37:20points were slipping
37:21away
37:23Ekstrom meanwhile
37:24was charging up
37:26behind Schneider
37:27and he muscled
37:27his way past
37:28the veteran
37:29the stewards
37:30reckon the manoeuvre
37:30was going too far
37:31and ordered
37:32a drive-through penalty
37:34Ekstrom rejoined
37:35in sixth place
37:36behind Christensen
37:37after serving
37:38that penalty
37:38but he was soon
37:39to move up
37:40to fifth
37:40Christensen
37:41was off
37:42the track
37:43again
37:45and when
37:46La Rosa
37:47in the Mercedes
37:47condemned him
37:48to ninth place
37:49that was
37:50effectively
37:50the end
37:51of his championship
37:52ambitions
37:54a small ray
37:55of hope
37:56though
37:56for Audi
37:57Frensen
37:58who had been
37:58a little untidy
37:59at the start
38:00was battling back
38:01here he is
38:02battling against
38:03Bruno Spengler
38:04and moving up
38:05into third place
38:08Schneider
38:09almost succeeded
38:10in pulling off
38:10a dramatic
38:11last-gaff coup
38:12as he shaped up
38:14to pass Tomchik
38:15three laps
38:15from the finish
38:16only to go wide
38:18and finish up
38:19driving through
38:19the gravel track
38:22so it was
38:23a new victor
38:24in the DTM
38:25and a new circuit
38:26Martin Tomchik
38:27taking the
38:28chequered flag
38:28Schneider
38:29in second place
38:30Frensen
38:31in third
38:32in fourth place
38:33Ekstrom
38:34then Spengler
38:35and out of the points
38:36Tom Christensen
38:37I'm really happy
38:38I can't believe it
38:39right now
38:39I have to say
38:40the start was good
38:41as well
38:42the first laps
38:42I could do my speed
38:44and in the middle
38:45of the race
38:46I had some
38:46very well fights
38:47with some Mercedes
38:48I have to say
38:49thanks
38:50because I took them
38:51without touching
38:52at the end of the race
38:53I had some problems
38:55with the break
38:55I had two missed breakings
38:57and so Bernd
38:57could close up again
38:59but fortunately
39:00he made as well
39:01a mistake
39:01and so I did my last
39:03three laps
39:04really slow
39:04and then I could
39:05celebrate my first win
39:07congratulations to him
39:09congratulations to him
39:09and that left the points
39:10table looking like this
39:11with Schneider on 62 points
39:13Christensen on 44
39:14and Spengler on 43
39:20for the penultimate race
39:22for the penultimate race
39:23there was another new track
39:24Le Mans
39:25not the full 24 hour circuit
39:28but the Bugatti track
39:29still a very technical venue
39:32Schneider required just three points
39:34from the last two races
39:35to claim his fifth DTM championship
39:39he topped the points
39:41of course on 62
39:42Christensen was now
39:43some 18 points behind
39:45going to a circuit
39:47that he knows
39:47so well
40:01again another new circuit
40:03the French certainly
40:04embraced the DTM
40:05although
40:05Jean Allaisy
40:07would be
40:07the man that they
40:08would be watching
40:12so to the race
40:14Spengler on the pole
40:16the young man
40:17had certainly come of age
40:18throughout the season
40:19Christensen made a mistake
40:21at the start
40:21Rean and Hackenden
40:23both came through
40:27but at least
40:29Tom Christensen managed
40:30to hold back
40:31Margaritis
40:34however
40:34Schneider was having
40:36a tough time with it too
40:38he was off
40:39on turn three
40:41there he is
40:42going through the gravel
40:43twitching
40:47then there was an incident
40:49Stippler
40:50Matthias
40:51Slauder
40:51and Ekstrom
40:53all being involved
40:54in that
40:55fearsome shunt
40:58fortunately
40:59no injuries
41:00but three
41:01very damaged
41:02motor cars
41:04I feel good
41:05I should say
41:07many thanks to the guys
41:08who did the construction
41:10of the car
41:11it was more or less safe
41:13I think
41:15and well it happened
41:17like a typical race
41:19accident happens
41:20I think Pierre and Ekki
41:22hit each other
41:23and Ekki hit me then
41:26and then we went
41:27into the gravel
41:27and because
41:28it went
41:31very downhill
41:32there
41:33and the gravel
41:34and the grass
41:34was pretty
41:36wet still
41:37but we had no
41:38break chance
41:39and
41:40downstairs
41:41I hit
41:41Matthias
41:43Slauder
41:43very hard
41:44the cause of the
41:46pile up remained
41:46unclear
41:47Matthias Ekstrom
41:48one of the stars
41:49of this particular show
41:50offered the most
41:51convincing
41:51explanation
41:52to the incident
41:54I was in the middle
41:55of the field
41:55and through the first
41:56corners
41:57it's always very tight
41:58when you're starting
41:58in the middle of the field
41:59and that was also
42:00the case now
42:01and I was touching
42:02a little bit
42:02with some cars
42:03but I had no big accident
42:04and then exiting
42:06the first corner
42:07down to
42:08the corner number two
42:09under the bridge
42:10I got a hit
42:11from behind
42:12and I
42:13broke the rear right
42:14suspension
42:14and
42:15then I went
42:16over the grass
42:17and was very lucky
42:18to not hit anyone
42:19when I came back
42:19on the track
42:20Not surprisingly
42:21it took three laps
42:22to clear the debris
42:23before the race action
42:24resumed
42:25the Mercedes trio
42:26of Spengler
42:27Green
42:27and Hacken
42:28and Leatherway
42:29followed by
42:29Christensen
42:30in fourth
42:30at the head
42:31of an Audi group
42:31also featuring
42:32Tomchik
42:33App
42:33and Scheider
42:37Schneider came in
42:38for his first
42:38compulsory pit stop
42:39on lap six
42:40his trip into the gravel
42:42had ruined his tyres
42:43so he urgently
42:44needed new rubber
42:45before starting a charge
42:47from 16th place
42:48the situation
42:49the situation
42:50was clear enough
42:50Spengler and
42:51Christensen
42:51both had a chance
42:53of scoring well
42:53Schneider
42:54definitely wanted
42:55to avoid
42:56the championship
42:56going down
42:57to the last race
42:58in Hockenheim
42:58nothing for it
42:59but to attack
43:00attack
43:01attack
43:03Pierre Caffer
43:04in the green
43:04Castrol Audi
43:05was the first
43:06obstacle on the way
43:07he provided
43:08some opposition
43:09but then
43:10Schneider muscled
43:11his way by
43:12quite a lot of paint
43:13was exchanged
43:14in that particular
43:15incident
43:16and still
43:17Caffer hangs on
43:18the man who's
43:18raced successfully
43:19in America
43:20in an Audi sports car
43:22and remember
43:23he's only in one
43:24of the 05
43:25Audis here
43:27finally
43:27Schneider is on
43:29the right line
43:29and he starts
43:30to pull clear
43:34midway through
43:34the race
43:35the action
43:35hotted up
43:36at the front
43:36of the field
43:37Green had joined
43:38Heinz Harold
43:39Frenchen
43:39in taking on
43:40fresh rubber
43:40and rejoined
43:42together
43:42just as
43:43Christiansen
43:44came charging
43:45up from behind
43:46Green was
43:53clearly unsure
43:54of his new
43:55tyres
43:55he took a
43:56trip through
43:56the gravel
43:56and Heinz
43:58Harold
43:58Frenchen
43:58spotted a gap
43:59and he went
44:00for it
44:00Green had
44:01lost a lot
44:02of speed
44:02Frenchen
44:03made a
44:03comfortable
44:04pass
44:04or so he
44:05thought
44:05but he
44:05hadn't reckoned
44:06without
44:06Green's
44:07immediate
44:07retaliation
44:09on the spot
44:10the stewards
44:11launched an
44:11inquiry
44:11into the
44:12incident
44:12he tried
44:14to close
44:14the door
44:14a little
44:15bit
44:15and we
44:15touched
44:16and he
44:17went wide
44:18and then I
44:18got a drive
44:19through penalty
44:19for that
44:20which I
44:20thought was
44:20quite hard
44:21but there
44:23we are
44:23the Greek
44:25the Greek
44:25German driver
44:25Margaritas
44:26was determined
44:27not to give
44:27in without
44:28a fight
44:28and he
44:29was up
44:29against
44:29none other
44:30than
44:30Bern Schneider
44:31who was
44:32now up
44:32to 7th
44:33place
44:37there Schneider
44:38coming out
44:38behind the
44:39black car
44:40of Margaritas
44:41Norbert
44:41Haug
44:41well not
44:42sure exactly
44:43what he
44:43thought about
44:44that
44:44Mercedes-Benz
44:46boss
44:47meanwhile
44:48Tom
44:49Christensen
44:49who had
44:50led the
44:50DTM
44:51early on
44:51in the
44:51season
44:52was running
44:53towards
44:54third
44:54place
44:59there
45:00Schneider
45:01going past
45:02Jamie Green
45:02his next target
45:04would be
45:04Martin Tomchik
45:07Green had
45:08certainly been
45:08racing hard
45:09after his
45:09drive-through
45:10penalty
45:10but at
45:12the flag
45:12it was
45:13another
45:13victory
45:13for
45:14Bruno
45:15Spengler
45:15right behind
45:16him
45:16Mika
45:16Hackenden
45:17Tom
45:18Christensen
45:19was forced
45:19to be
45:19content
45:20with
45:20third
45:20place
45:21and the
45:22championship
45:22went
45:23to
45:24Bern
45:24Schneider

45:26good
45:26enough
45:26to

45:28but
45:29another
