Pistons traded Isaiah Stewart for three second round picks, there has to be another move in the making?
Transcript
00:00One batter in, but he'd do it a second time.
00:02Yeah.
00:03Hanging curveball, he hit two homers off Scoobal yesterday.
00:06And you heard it there in regards, that was his third home run off of Scoobal,
00:10eventually hit his fourth home run off of Scoobal,
00:12and you had the numbers of Goldschmidt against Scoobal.
00:14I think it was 9 of 17 after that second home run.
00:18Unbelievable.
00:19Like, he just got his number.
00:21Yeah, he does.
00:22Hey, let's talk beef stew.
00:23Okay.
00:25This is a guy people love.
00:27This is a fan favorite.
00:28This is a heart and soul guy.
00:30And, John, they traded him for three second-round picks.
00:33Yeah, and so obviously when it happened last night, we're like, okay,
00:36well, is one of those second-round picks tonight?
00:38No, it's three futures.
00:41And second-round picks in the NBA are not like second-round picks in the NFL
00:45or really any other sport.
00:47They're just, okay, you're going to make the picks,
00:50you're going to fill up your G League roster,
00:52and they're guys that you probably never hear, see,
00:55or witness anything from them again.
00:58And so now you get three of those guys for one beef stew.
01:01This is called a salary dump.
01:03That's what this deal is.
01:04Stew was going to make $15 million.
01:05They want to use that money.
01:07They said we will take the bare minimum to get him off our roster,
01:10which may be a tough pill to swallow for people who love the guy,
01:13but we had mentioned we thought he was expendable.
01:16He played sparing minutes down the stretch in the postseason,
01:19and you could say it's because his knees weren't holding up.
01:21Well, that's also a concern.
01:24But he was expendable.
01:26But he said he was fine.
01:28He said he was healthy.
01:28Langdon said he's healthy, yet he averaged nine minutes a game
01:31in their last nine playoff games.
01:32He was expendable.
01:34That may be a harsh reality for some fans to accept, but he was expendable.
01:38And, John, I'm going to flip this.
01:40I'm excited because you don't do this unless you not have an idea
01:44of what you're going to do.
01:45You know what you're going to do.
01:47It would be irresponsible to move on from Isaiah Stewart and go,
01:50and we're still figuring it out.
01:52They have to have – this should be announced like today.
01:54I would think so.
01:56And I believe this was in the works because they were going to attempt
02:00to go get Austin Reeves.
02:01Yeah.
02:02And so now we're looking at a – it's not a trade deadline,
02:06but there is a – I guess a soft deadline because free agency starts
02:10on Tuesday where you want to be able to get something done.
02:13And if plan A has been removed to no fault of your own,
02:18now you've got to move on to plan B.
02:19What does plan B look like?
02:21Who is that name?
02:22Is it Kawhi Leonard?
02:23Is it LeBron, as Windhorse had speculated?
02:29Well, we have that audio, right?
02:31So let's play it for people because this is a guy who would know on LeBron
02:34and a guy who has insight around the league and mentions Kawhi Leonard.
02:38What did you say?
02:41My dad is serious.
02:43What did you say?
02:45I thought I could run my nose.
02:50I thought I could run my nose.
03:43So that's exciting, right?
03:45And take away the emotion of, and the fandom that you had for Beef Stew,
03:50it's a salary dump, and now the Pistons are setting themselves up
03:56to be one of the biggest storylines of the offseason.
04:00Which is what we asked for.
04:01Right, and we've asked for that for any of our four GMs.
04:04Could Trajan Langdon be different, be the one, do the thing, add the guy, go for it?
04:12I mean, okay, so it's there.
04:14Now we're just sitting here looking at our iPads, iPhones, tablets, whatever it is,
04:19waiting for that notification that says Trajan Langdon did it.
04:24Do you agree with what I'm saying, though?
04:25Like, you have to have, it's not, well, we'll call Kawhi and see if he's interested today.
04:28You have to know who you're going out and getting, otherwise you'd wait to make this
04:32Stewart move, right?
04:34Yes.
04:35Because it's not like the Stewart deal was going to disappear.
04:37Right, because Austin Reeves was already off the table.
04:39Right.
04:39Reeves was gone.
04:40Stew was free for anybody.
04:42I mean, three seconds in the future.
04:43He was free for anybody.
04:44You don't make that move unless you have the other move already secured.
04:50Right.
04:50And it's just there, it's until it's announced, but because.
04:53Well, that's what you would anticipate.
04:55Yeah, otherwise that would feel silly, right?
04:56That's what they would lead you to believe.
04:57Yes, that you're, unless you're, you know, I mean, we've seen other GMs in our town open
05:03up cap space and then either not use it in free agency and have a rainy day fun.
05:09I just don't, I don't believe that Trajan Langdon is going to sit there with a rainy day fun
05:14thinking that somebody's going to get hurt because it's, you're just not going to go sign anybody
05:18in another week's time.
05:20All those guys will be signed.
05:22Trades will be consummated and, and the big moves, the big, the big opportunity will be,
05:27will be gone.
05:29Tech says that this Kawhi Leonard thing makes a lot of sense.
05:32Perfect bridge to see what, if he develops into what the organization thinks while winning
05:37right now.
05:38If he develops, he's developed.
05:40Says if the, oh, if the Pistons love who they drafted, isn't Kawhi the perfect bridge to
05:44see if the player they drafted, while still having a player to win now.
05:47Yes.
05:48I mean, yeah, it's okay.
05:50When you watch some of the highlights of, oh, Corey, yeah, you like what you see, but
05:54some of that's just him shooting on air and you, you never see him miss.
05:58And I, I had to chuckle yesterday.
06:00I was listening to the Karshan Anderson and Gator was, was talking about, oh, this guy never
06:05misses.
06:06And he was like, oh, okay, Jack asked you, you're watching the highlights.
06:09Oh, Gator, no.
06:11Which was hilarious.
06:12So, I mean, yeah, it's, it's like, we're not going to build up, oh, Corey, into be anything
06:16more than he's a number 17 overall pick, had a great year.
06:21He's 19 years old.
06:22It's that, that one is going to take some time.
06:25You're killing me.
06:25I watched his five minute highlight.
06:27Yeah.
06:27And he never misses.
06:28The plays are phenomenal.
06:29You should see what this guy does.
06:31It was hilarious.
06:32But Kawhi, does he make sense for the Pistons?
06:34Yeah.
06:35He was an all NBA guy a year ago.
06:37Nicknamed the claw for the way he plays defense.
06:39And, you know, he's not peak Kawhi anymore, but he can score, he can defend, he plays on
06:44the wing.
06:44He would check all the boxes.
06:46Well, and he is, at one point in his career, he was the guy.
06:50He was the one that the offense went through.
06:53Now, that's not, that's not him anymore.
06:56And it certainly wouldn't be him with the Pistons.
06:59That's always going to be Cade Cunningham.
07:01And, but he would be a terrific compliment.
07:04The only, the only drawback is, can, how much will he be available?
07:10Can he stay healthy?
07:11And I believe it was like 60 games.
07:1360, 65 games last year.
07:15Yeah.
07:16He was 7th in the MVP voting.
07:18He was second team all NBA.
07:21The numbers for the season.
07:22Again, he is getting up there.
07:23He's 34.
07:24He'll be 35.
07:24But he could still do it because this guy scored 27 points per game last season and
07:30he can shoot 39% from three and damn near 90% at the free throw line.
07:35I mean, hey.
07:37If you want to take a little stress off his body and you want to extend his career by
07:42a year or two, then, yeah, come here.
07:45You don't have to be the guy that is expected to score 35 a night.
07:50We know you can.
07:50And there will be times when Cade is maybe off or he's a little bit tired.
07:56Okay.
07:56Now we need Kawhi to step up.
07:58I think it would be a really good fit as long as he could stay healthy.
08:02Right.
08:02A text says dude never plays.
08:04He played 65 last year, 37 the year before, 68 the year before that.
08:08Look, you'd have to load manage him.
08:10That would probably irk some people.
08:12But the scenario we're describing, they're keeping Cade, Durin, and Asar and using this
08:19cap space to add.
08:21They wanted Reeves.
08:21Didn't happen.
08:23Could be Kawhi.
08:24Could be somebody else.
08:24But they're keeping those three and adding some oomph to it.
08:27And if it's Kawhi, it's a guy that can be that second score that, you know, can help
08:32spread the floor a little bit more.
08:34So maybe Jalen Durin, when he gets into playoffs, is a little bit more effective.
08:38All those other guys are a little bit more effective.
08:42And he plays defense.
08:44And he plays defense.
08:45Trading for LeBron would be one of the weirdest days in Detroit sports history.
08:48Well, correct me if I'm wrong.
08:50Free agent, right?
08:50He's a free agent.
08:51Yeah.
08:51You don't have to trade for him.
08:51I think he just means adding LeBron to Detroit would be bizarro world.
08:55Another one says, maybe this is the Wallman trade.
09:04You trade Jake Wallman?
09:05Yeah.
09:06No.
09:07The Stewart move.
09:10And people are really trying to take the wind out of my sails.
09:12Did he just open this space to pay Durin and Assar?
09:16No.
09:17I think this is in addition to.
09:20No, you don't.
09:21I don't believe that.
09:23You could have kept Beef Stew and signed Assar and Durin.
09:28Yeah.
09:28This is to add space and clear up more money to be able to pay somebody big.
09:34Yeah.
09:35Yeah.
09:35Bigger.
09:36Bigger.
09:36Yeah.
09:37I asked the question yesterday.
09:38I said, who is this for?
09:40And someone said, Jason Robertson.
09:43Like the jokes are there.
09:44Someone said, they're going to use the money to pay Gibbs and Laporta.
09:46Yeah.
09:47The jokes write themselves.
09:48But this is a real opportunity for the Pistons to say, we got something.
09:51We had a great regular season.
09:53We want to be a team that has a great postseason.
09:55We can keep our core, move on from Stew, use the cap and the cash to round this thing out
10:01and go for it.
10:01Well, and we said it yesterday after the draft.
10:04The storyline isn't going to be Okori at 17.
10:07That's not the storyline of the postseason.
10:10The storyline is going to be, now we're watching it happen right in front of our eyes.
10:15You move on from beef stew.
10:17You create some cap space.
10:18Now, who are you going to either go sign or trade for that adds shooting, offense, and
10:25is a guy that can also play some defense?
10:29We're getting flooded with response.
10:30We got spots on the phones, 248-539-9797.
10:34We got two Grand Slam coming up at 725, less than an hour away.
10:37It's 97.1.
