A farmer in Uttar Pradesh's Amroha district has accused a man posing as a Maulana of cheating him out of ₹1.8 crore by promising to double his money through tantra-mantra and special rituals.

According to the complaint, the accused, identified as Jaane Alam, allegedly gained the trust of Akash Chaudhary, a resident of Sarkada Kala village in the Bachhrayun area, through small financial transactions before convincing him to make larger investments.

Akash told police that he met the accused around two years ago. During their interactions, the self-styled Maulana claimed he could multiply money through tantra-mantra and religious rituals.

To gain his confidence, the accused allegedly accepted ₹10,000 from him and later returned ₹20,000. Encouraged by the apparent returns, Akash continued investing money with him.

The complainant alleged that over the next two years, he handed over a total of ₹1.8 crore to the accused. To arrange the funds, he reportedly sold 32 bighas of agricultural land. According to him, ₹35 lakh was transferred through four bank accounts, while the remaining amount was paid in cash.

Akash alleged that the accused repeatedly promised high returns but later stopped returning the money. He further claimed that a settlement was reached around six months ago in Gajraula, under which the accused agreed to repay the entire amount on a fixed date.

However, when Akash approached him on the agreed date to recover the money, the accused allegedly misbehaved with him and threatened to kill him.

Following the incident, the farmer submitted a written complaint at Gajraula Police Station seeking legal action against the accused and recovery of his money.

Meanwhile, a video purportedly showing the accused performing a ritual in front of a box filled with currency notes has surfaced on social media. The video, which is around 1 minute and 34 seconds long, allegedly shows him conducting an aarti-like ceremony before stacks of cash.

The complainant claims that the money seen in the video is the ₹1.8 crore he had handed over to the accused.

Crime Inspector Ram Sanjeev said the accused had promised to return the money but had failed to do so. Police said the matter is under investigation and appropriate action will be taken based on the findings.
