00:00:03O que é isso?
00:00:30Come on, come on, come on
00:00:39There's fireworks right now
00:00:45Welcome to the Red Granite Party
00:00:48The emergence of real film, real content
00:00:53And the change of the film industry forever
00:01:06It was a very strange experience
00:01:08Because it was the sort of equivalent of a big studio party
00:01:12It was just this heaving mass of people
00:01:13And then stars everywhere
00:01:18Leonardo DiCaprio was there
00:01:19And then Kanye West comes on stage
00:01:26Jamie Foxx joins him and they do Gold Digger
00:01:36And the guy next to me is like
00:01:38That's like a million dollars burnt right there
00:01:41Give it up for Kanye West in the building right now
00:01:47Red Granite forever
00:01:50It was kind of bizarre
00:01:51Because no one actually knew who Red Granite were
00:01:53They just sort of launched
00:01:55And suddenly they were here with this massive party
00:01:57People were really sort of stunned wondering
00:02:00Who are these people?
00:02:08These officials and their associates conspired to misappropriate and launder billions of dollars
00:02:16Through complex money laundering schemes
00:02:18And a web of opaque transactions
00:02:21Including high-end real estate in New York and Los Angeles
00:02:24They used the money to pay gambling debts at Las Vegas casinos
00:02:28A motion picture company used more than 100 million dollars of that
00:02:32They rented luxury yachts
00:02:33They parked a floral condo in New York City in a townhouse
00:02:41Assets that kleptocrats and other corrupt officials steal
00:02:44Fire transfers totaling approximately 64 million dollars
00:02:48Funds were used to acquire nearly 100 million dollars
00:02:53People were defrauded on an enormous scale
00:02:58Schemes whose tentacles reached around the world

00:04:03Eu decidi focar no Time Warner Center.
00:04:16Muita do dinheiro é invisível.
00:04:19Você não vê as pessoas bancas.
00:04:21Mas real estate é muito visual.
00:04:24Esse é realmente o começo para a história.
00:04:27Aerei.
00:04:28This deed for, 80 Columbus Circle, Time Warner Center, penthouse 76b.
00:04:36The owner, 80 Columbus Circle, parentheses, NYC, LLC.
00:04:44No name of a human being.
00:04:47Sale price 30.55 million.
00:04:52After Time Warner Center, I looked for shell company names in this same format, address, parenthesis, city, LLC.
00:05:06And I found some. One Central Park West, parenthesis, NYC, LLC.
00:05:14Then there's this one here, Park Laurel, parenthesis, NYC, LTD.
00:05:22The buyer is Sorsum Investments, Inc., another shell company, signed by sole director of Sorsum Investments, named Reza Aziz.
00:05:32Once I saw the name, Reza Aziz, I looked him up and it was pretty easy to see that he
00:05:37was running Red Granite Picture
00:05:38and that he was in the process of producing Wolf of Wall Street.
00:05:46My name is Jordan Belford. The year I turned 26, I made $49 million, which really pissed me off because
00:05:53it was three shy of a million a week.
00:05:57The Wolf of Wall Street is based on Jordan Belford, a very charismatic, smart individual who set up a firm
00:06:03and stole money.
00:06:04Nobody knows if the stock is going to go up, down, sideways, or in circles.
00:06:09You know what a fugazi is?
00:06:10Well, fugazi. It's fake.
00:06:12He wired the money around the world as part of a disguise to hide it, and then used that money
00:06:18to acquire great wealth and toys that come with it.
00:06:22But there's nowhere to go.
00:06:24And there's nowhere to slow.
00:06:26The parallels between the Wolf of Wall Street story and Red Granite story, they're actually pretty stunning.
00:06:33It really is a very strange turn of events.
00:06:43This is an incredibly hard film to get financed from the onset.
00:06:47You know, not many studios are chomping at the bit to do an American epic with Wall Street in the
00:06:52title, let alone this sort of focus on hedonism and debauchery and excess.
00:06:58And for that reason, I'm thankful to the people that we ran into in Red Granite that were willing to
00:07:03take a gamble on making a very adult American epic about, you know, the state of our culture.
00:07:10We're very excited, very, very, very excited.
00:07:13Risa Aziz was a mid-level banker at HSBC.
00:07:18This was not a high-level person who would have made tens of millions of dollars that you would need
00:07:24to see these movies.
00:07:25And Joey McFarlane, his partner at Red Granite, was from Kentucky, had had some random real estate deals in the
00:07:33Midwest, and then had worked as a talent booker.
00:07:36But again, not someone who was coming with tens of millions of dollars needed to see the movie.
00:07:52I started talking to a number of different sources in Hollywood about Red Granite.
00:07:57Who were these guys who'd showed up out of nowhere, really?
00:08:03A Hollywood source played for me a secret recording of Joey back from 2011,
00:08:10talking about Red Granite.
00:08:14Once this ball gets rolling, if his first picture makes money and shows them what we're capable of,
00:08:19and the first launch party, the premiere party, all the red carpet bullshit that goes along with this,
00:08:24it's going to be the biggest business I do all year because I'm going to be fucking inviting the goddamn
00:08:29friends of Saudi Arabia.
00:08:32It showed that Joey had a lot of self-confidence and belief in his ability
00:08:38to get people with big money to do what he wanted.
00:08:42It also gave me some insight into Riz's family.
00:08:47All the way to the top.
00:08:48Yes, dad.
00:08:49The uncles, they're all...
00:08:51They're like the Kennedys.
00:08:53I'll put it to you this way, bro.
00:08:54If we fucking have a killer in two years,
00:08:58we'll be one of the biggest companies now.
00:09:01You don't realize the people that I have behind me.
00:09:04Matt!
00:09:05Matt!
00:09:07Matt!

00:09:13Matthew, please!
00:09:13I can't go anywhere, dude.
00:09:14Come on!
00:09:15Congratulations, Margo.
00:09:16Congratulations.
00:09:16I was there at the Wolf of Wall Street premiere after party.
00:09:20Margo!
00:09:21Margo!
00:09:22Margo!
00:09:22Margo!
00:09:22Margo!
00:09:23Margo!
00:09:23Margo!
00:09:23was just out with the rest of the guests, sitting on a banquette.
00:09:27He had a tall, beautiful blonde woman accompanying him,
00:09:31not acting like he was the center of the action.
00:09:35Leonardo DiCaprio was in the VIP area.
00:09:39And there was a man there with Leonardo DiCaprio.
00:09:43I said, who's that fellow?
00:09:46Pointing.
00:09:48And they said, oh, he's a really rich man.
00:09:52He's Cholo.
00:09:54He's provided the money for the movies.
00:09:56And I said, oh, well, how did he make his money?
00:10:00And they said, we're not sure, but he's the man behind all the money.
00:10:11A very easy, quick Google search brought up the mysterious big spender of New York.
00:10:18And he had been covered a few years prior in the New York Post for spending so much money on
00:10:23the club scene.
00:10:32He was very sought after by every club owner.
00:10:38He was there.
00:10:40He was making your year.
00:10:43Just one bottle after the next, after the next.
00:10:45He was like $10,000 bottles of champagne.
00:10:50He had an entourage.
00:10:54Everyone was trying to boo him and be his best friend.
00:10:57And I thought he was like Malaysian royalty, just whatever that means.
00:11:05You know, I didn't really know and I didn't really care, to be honest.
00:11:20So 76B is one of the Time Warner penthouses that was purchased in 2011 for $30.5 million.
00:11:27Right up there, it's on the tower on the right, and it's on the left side of the tower.
00:11:33It's one of the most lavish penthouses in the building.
00:11:37The renters of this unit used to be Jay-Z and Beyoncé.
00:11:43And we found that during the shooting of Wolf of Wall Street,
00:11:47Leonardo DiCaprio stayed in 76B and Joey McFarlane spent a lot of time in the complex.
00:11:53There were so many loud parties that there were complaints.
00:11:58I had a lot of sources in and around this building.
00:12:02And I was told there was a young Malaysian man who came to the showing of this unit.
00:12:11And he told people he was buying it for a group of investors,
00:12:16including the Prime Minister of Malaysia.
00:12:20That young man was Joe Lowe.
00:12:24Because of that connection, I knew that this was a two-headed investigation.
00:12:31It was an investigation of Joe Lowe and it was an investigation of the Prime Minister of Malaysia.
00:12:40It was an investigation of Joe Lowe.
00:12:44And he became Prime Minister in 2009.
00:12:54em 2009.
00:14:18Prime Minister me aluized as Adonis General,
00:14:22Judiciária,
00:14:24Media,
00:14:26E-Lequidão.
00:14:28Comissão.
00:14:31E nós temos sido governado por partidos políticos
00:14:34desde a independência.
00:14:36Uma partida por mais de 60 anos.
00:14:40Isto é um sistema muito democrático de processo.
00:14:48Prime Minister e isai da Prime Minister,
00:14:52eles são muito, muito engraçados.
00:14:55Eles me dão ideia todos os dias.
00:14:56Mas em Malaysia,
00:14:58há dois personagens que não podem ser criados.
00:15:01Uma é a isia da Prime Minister.
00:15:05E a segunda é o Prophet Muhammad.
00:17:10famílias, originalmente.
00:17:12Eles se tornaram muito riqueza
00:17:14através de Joe's activities.
00:17:17Eles tinham ums e descanso.
00:17:18Ele tinha descanso e descanso.
00:17:19Ele tinha descanso com seus companheiros.
00:17:20Há uma renovação na sua casa
00:17:22que terminou em uma avaliação
00:17:24sobre um pagamento.
00:17:27Larry split de sua companhia
00:17:29e foi um pouco de depressão.
00:17:33E Joe realmente se tornou
00:17:35em Lowe family.
00:17:37Esperava para o futuro
00:17:38quando ele voltou para o Harrow.
00:17:45Os antigos escolas mudaram
00:17:47por anos.
00:17:48Os cústumos moram em suas caixas.
00:17:51Há ainda estão no vento no Harrow Hill.
00:17:54Eu acho que o grande grande momento
00:17:56para Joe Lowe
00:17:56foi quando os pais decidiram
00:17:58enviar ele para o Harrow
00:17:59na U.K.
00:18:01na década de 90s.
00:18:02porque ele foi de repente
00:18:04ele foi de repente
00:18:05para o Malaysia
00:18:07para o Malaysia
00:18:08para a escola
00:18:10onde Winston Churchill
00:18:11e outros estudaram.
00:18:13Desde o grantor
00:18:14da escola,
00:18:167 prime ministérios
00:18:17foram educados aqui.
00:18:19E Winston Churchill
00:18:20frequentemente revisou Harrow
00:18:22como um dos
00:18:22mais distinguidos
00:18:23dos filhos.
00:18:25Então, Joe Lowe
00:18:26foi de repente
00:18:26estudar
00:18:27com o
00:18:29King
00:18:29de Jordão
00:18:30e
00:18:31e
00:18:31e
00:18:31e
00:18:31e
00:18:45desenvolvimento
00:18:49In fact, Joe
00:18:51became muito bem friends
00:18:51com Reza, em Londres
00:18:55e ele também
00:18:55conheceu Reza's mãe Rosma
00:18:59e Rosma
00:19:00was the wife of Najee
00:19:04Reza Aziz
00:19:05was the stepson of the prime minister
00:19:06of Malaysia
00:19:08and friends with them all
00:19:11was Jolo
00:19:28In September 2014
00:19:30I wanted to see if Joe and Najee
00:19:32would meet up in New York
00:19:34They were both in town during the United Nations
00:19:37General Assembly
00:19:39My colleague Stephanie Sahl
00:19:41and I staked out
00:19:42the Time Warner Center
00:19:47Stephanie stood outside
00:19:48and would tell me when anyone was coming up
00:19:53and I was upstairs
00:19:54in the lobby of the Mandarin Oriental
00:20:03first she texted me
00:20:08I stood at the ready of the elevator
00:20:10out he came
00:20:17he walked over and sat in the bar
00:20:23a little while later she texted
00:20:27again I was at the ready of the elevator
00:20:41Najeeb walked around to the entrance
00:20:43to the hotel rooms
00:20:46it was not more than two minutes
00:20:48Joe stood up from the bar
00:20:51walked over
00:20:52and followed Najeeb
00:20:53up into the rooms
00:20:58I asked Joe and Najeeb's representatives about this
00:21:02they confirmed
00:21:02they had been up there meeting
00:21:04they said it was a short social gathering
00:21:06end of story
00:21:09but you know a lot was going on right then
00:21:11in the story of 1MDB
00:21:13and this money trail
00:21:14and I do wonder what they were talking about
00:21:17up there
00:21:21when Najeeb Razak took over
00:21:23as the Prime Minister of Malaysia
00:21:26he came up with this idea
00:21:27to set up a investment fund
00:21:30called 1MDB
00:21:37the trust fund that brings returns
00:21:39for the future of the people
00:21:43and every cent of that
00:21:46came from Malaysian taxpayers
00:21:52when I found out that 1MDB
00:21:55invested 1 billion US dollars
00:21:57in a company called Petrol Saudi
00:22:02the first thing you do
00:22:04is you check who Petrol Saudi is
00:22:07it is a fantastic name
00:22:09Petroleum at a point in time
00:22:11110 US dollars per barrel
00:22:13Saudi Arabia the king of petroleum
00:22:15this has to be a jackpot company
00:22:19then when you do a search on Petrol Saudi
00:22:22you realise that the founder
00:22:24Tarek Obaid
00:22:26there was no reference of him
00:22:28in Google
00:22:29any time before 2009
00:22:34and I discovered that he was only 32 years old
00:22:38it was then that we found out that when
00:22:411MDB actually invested 1 billion in Petrol Saudi
00:22:44Petrol Saudi was barely a year old
00:22:48so all those little facts put together
00:22:54rang huge alarm bells that there's something fishy with this investment
00:23:01and that's when I raised my first question
00:23:03in March 2010 in Parliament
00:23:07who guarantees this loan?
00:23:08they said Petrol Saudi guarantees the loan
00:23:10on the corporate guarantee
00:23:11what is their paid up capital?
00:23:14how much money do they have?
00:23:15what is their financial reserve?
00:23:16can you show us the statement such that
00:23:18they can actually guarantee a 1 billion US dollar loan?
00:23:29I had always asked the question
00:23:32why was 1MDB not subject to the same oversight
00:23:37as the rest of the government companies?
00:23:42so I then got hold of my other brothers
00:23:46and we met Najib
00:23:48and told him that
00:23:50look, you know
00:23:50we are very concerned about this
00:23:55and how that somewhat conflicted
00:23:57with the kind of values that our father had
00:24:04public service, integrity, frugality
00:24:08Najib said he would look into the matter
00:24:12and that he would fix any shortcomings at 1MDB
00:24:22it came to my attention 1MDB had raised bonds
00:24:28public debt with Goldman Sachs
00:24:35that the people of Malaysia would have to pay back
00:24:40Goldman Sachs was being paid huge amounts
00:24:43and anyone who is making atypically huge fees
00:24:47you have to ask why
00:25:15I thought I can't wait to meet with this person
00:25:17and we did meet
00:25:18and I got a lot of information about
00:25:20how close Joe Lowe was to these transactions
00:25:27Joe Lowe popped up on everything
00:25:31he's secretly getting consulting fees from 1MDB
00:25:34he's in the VIP area at the Wolf of Wall Street after party
00:25:39and he's thanked in the credits
00:25:42Joe and Riza passing money between them
00:25:44behind shell companies and real estate
00:25:47and so the very tight connection
00:25:50between Joe Lowe and the Prime Minister's family
00:25:54and the Malaysian people's money
00:25:56was becoming very clear
00:25:58they were each pieces in a puzzle
00:26:00and I put this whole puzzle together
00:26:12I read the New York Times article
00:26:15I was shocked
00:26:17but also extremely embarrassed
00:26:20I didn't know Joe Lowe
00:26:21I think I shook his hand a couple of times
00:26:23but I didn't know him
00:26:25but the idea that he was in some way linked
00:26:29to my brother
00:26:30and potentially spending Malaysian taxpayers' money
00:26:36really disgusted me
00:26:42I knew that there were documents
00:26:47that were available that were for sale
00:26:51that purported to show details of money
00:26:55moving between 1MDB and Joe Lowe
00:26:57leaked documents
00:27:00those were the smoking gun
00:27:08This is a triumph of journalism
00:27:11of different parties working together
00:27:13around the world
00:27:15to uncover this massive, massive scandal
00:27:22The work done by the New York Times
00:27:26online whistleblower, Sarab Report
00:27:29and of course in Malaysia
00:27:30you have the aged publications
00:27:32who got into trouble with the authorities
00:27:35We will not apologize
00:27:36because we have not done anything wrong
00:27:39We stand by everything we have published
00:27:41and I would like to add one thing
00:27:43none of the article we have published
00:27:45has been challenged
00:27:49The Sarawak Report
00:27:50came out with this bombshell
00:27:52in February 2015
00:27:54700 million dollars
00:27:56had been taken from the fund
00:27:58under the guise of being sent to a joint venture
00:28:01with a Saudi Arabian oil company
00:28:08When Sarawak Report first published
00:28:11the joint venture agreement
00:28:12between 1MDB and Petro Saudi
00:28:15it was explosive
00:28:18That was the first time we get a peek
00:28:22into the hidden operations
00:28:25within 1MDB
00:28:26on how they were scamming the money
00:28:30from the Malaysian people
00:28:32It was depressing
00:28:33People were angry
00:28:39The documents showed that
00:28:41700 million dollars
00:28:42had ended up in an offshore company
00:28:45allegedly controlled by JOLO
00:28:49For the record
00:28:50do you have any involvement
00:28:52or have you had any involvement
00:28:54with 1Malaysia Development Berhad?
00:28:57I believe that
00:28:58this is a politically sort of charged effort
00:29:00to try and put the blame on me
00:29:03when truly I have no decision making authority
00:29:07Why would you be a political target
00:29:09in this unfolding scandal?
00:29:14I think it's because
00:29:16it may have stemmed from
00:29:18my 16 year friendship
00:29:19with Reza Aziz
00:29:20who is of course
00:29:21the stepson
00:29:22of the Malaysian prime minister
00:29:24and I feel like
00:29:25I'm just an easy target
00:29:27and a victim
00:29:28because perhaps
00:29:29because of my age
00:29:30and unfortunately
00:29:32some of the things
00:29:34that I've done in my early years
00:29:35of partying
00:29:37that
00:29:37you know
00:29:38I had a bit too much fun then
00:29:47The JOLO birthday party
00:29:49was a spectacle
00:29:50in every sense
00:29:51they had hired
00:29:54at least 250
00:29:56of the most gorgeous looking
00:29:58models
00:29:59from all over America
00:30:01to be cocktail waitresses
00:30:03for this party
00:30:04and they were all identically dressed
00:30:06in red
00:30:07they made a stunning visual impact
00:30:10and all of them were walking around
00:30:13with magnums of cristal
00:30:17I remember standing at the bar
00:30:19with Britney Spears
00:30:20as she was waiting her turn
00:30:22to go on to sing happy birthday
00:30:24and then Jamie Foxx walks on
00:30:26to be the MC
00:30:28and now you're paying attention
00:30:32you're saying this is no ordinary party
00:30:35this was now big money
00:30:38I was introduced to JOLO
00:30:41and he was a super rich
00:30:44playboy billionaire
00:30:46holding court
00:30:47and around JOLO
00:30:49were security people
00:30:50it's like a wedding cake
00:30:52if you can imagine
00:30:53Mr. Malaysian money bags
00:30:55was at the very top
00:30:56and then there were these tiers
00:30:58that came down
00:30:59and you were either in tier one
00:31:01or tier two
00:31:02or tier three
00:31:03Paris Holtz
00:31:05it was ushered right into
00:31:07the intimate circle
00:31:09there was this huge turnout
00:31:11of celebrities
00:31:14including
00:31:16DiCaprio
00:31:17the list is endless
00:31:18you could run a
00:31:19movie credits crawl
00:31:20on the screen
00:31:21of all the people
00:31:22that were there
00:31:33this was the entrance to the party
00:31:39I went back to look at it the next day
00:31:42and it was like it never ever happened
00:31:44it had gone
00:31:45it didn't exist three days beforehand
00:31:50it didn't exist 24 hours afterwards
00:31:55I mean it was a proper circus tent
00:31:57with a giant ferris wheel inside
00:32:02I don't think I would be wrong
00:32:04if I described it as the best
00:32:07and the most expensive party
00:32:10that Las Vegas has ever seen
00:32:13to do what they did
00:32:15a ferris wheel
00:32:16amusement games
00:32:18an arcade
00:32:19security
00:32:21the food
00:32:22the drinks
00:32:23the gifts
00:32:24the stars
00:32:26the celebrities
00:32:28that must have cost a hundred million dollars
00:32:37in the end none of it really made sense
00:32:41if somebody is spending that kind of money
00:32:45that freely
00:32:47it cannot have come from legitimate sources
00:32:56how do we define value?
00:32:59we interviewed Joe Lowe at the journal in 2014
00:33:02and we wrote a story about him as an investor
00:33:06it is about how each deal changes a community
00:33:09a country
00:33:10and a world
00:33:11there's this video that Joe Lowe creates
00:33:14it's an attempt to portray himself as a
00:33:17as a jet-setting corporate titan
00:33:20our approach is to fundamentally question
00:33:23how quality is created
00:33:26how to enhance value
00:33:28identify synergies
00:33:29capitalize on
00:33:31and the backstory that he gave to people was
00:33:33that his family had a lot of money
00:33:36and he was investing money on behalf of his grandfather
00:33:38and his father
00:33:39who'd made you know billions in iron ore mining in Thailand
00:33:43but as soon as people put real resources into trying to find out about his grandfather
00:33:49you only needed to ask a few people in Malaysia
00:33:51and you realize he didn't have billions
00:33:54at least not he didn't inherit billions
00:33:56he then started to donate a lot of money to cancer centers
00:34:00to the United Nations
00:34:02and I think that again was an attempt to make it appear that he was this real businessman
00:34:08so the questions about where his money came from he hoped would go away
00:34:13but we kept digging and in the summer of 2015
00:34:16it came out with this much bigger story
00:34:20the Wall Street Journal came into possession of secret documents
00:34:24that revealed a very large payment of about 681 million dollars
00:34:30paid into the personal bank account of the Prime Minister of Malaysia
00:34:35and that was a big fact
00:34:37and it was a mystery that needed to be solved
00:34:43and then we came into possession of these Blackberry messenger transcripts
00:34:47between Jolo and one of the mid-level bankers
00:34:50that oversaw the Prime Minister's accounts
00:34:54one of these descriptions refers to
00:35:00681 American pies about to come into the Prime Minister's bank account
00:35:04the bank records show 681 million American dollars are transferred in
00:35:09in this case the American pie means 1 million dollars
00:35:13so that was the code word
00:35:15until that point we hadn't really connected Jolo to the transfer to the Prime Minister
00:35:20it showed that he was there stage managing these discussions and setting things up
00:35:25and it just really proved his instrumental role in the case
00:35:35and it just really proved his instrumental role in the case
00:35:40He's asking bankers at AmBank, a bank that he used and the Prime Minister used
00:35:44to do things so compliance cannot see
00:35:51and he's asking, you know, please move this money here, that money there
00:35:55please just tell them Najib wants this
00:35:57and he's very impatient, he's very distracted
00:36:10I'd say from reading the Blackberry messages
00:36:11the general impression you get is that Jolo is cutting a lot of corners
00:36:21I was very excited because, you know, you've been a journalist for 20 years
00:36:25it's not every day that you get a story about a sitting Prime Minister receiving stolen funds
00:36:31we wanted to make sure that we upheld very high standards in reporting it
00:36:35and we were obviously getting pushback from the Prime Minister's office
00:36:38saying, well, you know, this is not true
00:36:40so we were very nervous to make sure that we were reporting it
00:36:45you know, everything was 100% correct
00:36:47you can't make mistakes on these kinds of stories
00:36:52I happened to be on holiday in LA
00:36:55and over breakfast I picked up the Wall Street Journal
00:36:59and I was stunned
00:37:01Well, a shocking development, Ange
00:37:03and allegations for the first time
00:37:05directly linking the Prime Minister to the 1MDB scandal
00:37:10681 million US dollars
00:37:12yeah, I was... I fell off my chair, to be honest
00:37:17this was now becoming an international story
00:37:20that was the magnitude of what was happening here
00:37:23Prime Minister, you look happy
00:37:24can I ask you, sir, why you haven't resigned
00:37:26over personal involvement in the corruption scandal of global proportions, sir?
00:37:31Are you going to resign, Prime Minister?
00:37:34Yes!
00:37:39The 681 million dollars that Najib allegedly received into his accounts
00:37:44came two months before a really important general election in 2013
00:37:52it certainly looked like 1MDB had been a political slush fund
00:37:58a way that he could spend money and get re-elected
00:38:05I remember what happened during the 13th January elections
00:38:08and we were wondering where all this money was coming from
00:38:11that was being poured into various constituencies
00:38:17there was money being given away
00:38:20there's vote buying in many respects
00:38:281MDB is people's money
00:38:30which is why it's very irksome
00:38:33that they would use the people's money
00:38:36to ensure their own victory
00:38:44it's very, very hard to describe
00:38:48Najib is my brother
00:38:49he will always be my brother
00:38:50and I love him as my brother
00:38:52we are close-knit family
00:38:54but it seemed to me that
00:38:57his promise that he would look into it
00:38:59and make sure there was no improprietary at 1MDB
00:39:04was not happening
00:39:07what I then decided to do was to campaign
00:39:10to get various influential people
00:39:14to also look into 1MDB
00:39:19I went to see politicians on both sides
00:39:22and really urged everyone to make sure
00:39:25that this is properly investigated
00:39:27and the rule of law applies
00:39:32in the summer of 2015
00:39:34the central bank
00:39:35the attorney general
00:39:37the anti-corruption commission
00:39:38were trying to investigate 1MDB
00:39:41and find out
00:39:42what had been going on
00:39:43as police raided the offices
00:39:45of Malaysian state investment fund 1MDB
00:39:48on Wednesday
00:39:49members of the prime minister's political party
00:39:51appeared to be closing ranks behind him
00:39:53the Wall Street journals
00:39:55alleging investigators of the fund
00:39:57transfers almost 700 million dollars
00:40:00to Najib results
00:40:01in the bank account
00:40:02what we believe happened
00:40:04is that the attorney general
00:40:05was preparing a draft arrest warrant for Najib
00:40:09and as the document was being prepared
00:40:14the prime minister decided to remove the attorney general
00:40:17who was investigating 1MDB
00:40:21suddenly there was a clamp down
00:40:23on 1MDB investigations
00:40:28the Edge editor was held overnight
00:40:32the Edge was suspended for
00:40:34I think a few weeks
00:40:38and at that time
00:40:39I began to also fear for my safety
00:40:56if it wasn't over
00:40:57protests on the streets of Kuala Lumpur
00:40:59go into a second day
00:41:01Os protestantes estão dirigindo a uma pessoa,
00:41:05Prime Minister Najib Razak.
00:41:25Ocado no Brasil
00:41:26A escandal está afastando o serviço основ básico –
00:41:29batalha!
00:41:30Batalha!
00:41:31Batalha!
00:41:32Batalha!
00:41:33Batalha!
00:41:35Batalha é resultado da corrupção.
00:41:40As pessoas que deveriam ser líderes
00:41:43não importa.
00:42:53que foi realizado um filme The Wolf of Wall Street.
00:44:02Rupiter Reports Act production company Red Granite
00:44:06foi acusado de usar 100 milhões de dólares
00:44:09que foi diverted de 1MDB fund
00:44:12para financiar o Wolf de Wall Street.
00:44:17Eu acho que antes de ninguém
00:44:19de qualquer coisa sobre a conexão com Malaysia,
00:44:22antes de qualquer coisa que tinha sido juntas entre 1MDB,
00:44:25pessoas estavam perguntando
00:44:27onde eles tinham o dinheiro.
00:44:33Isso é Alex de The Hollywood Reporter.
00:44:35So, how are you doing?
00:44:37So, yes, well, I wanted to speak to you
00:44:39about the company Red Granite.
00:44:42I've been trying to speak to anyone involved in Red Granite.
00:44:45He wrote a story about Red Granite that was published yesterday.
00:44:48Obviously, there's a growing investigation into the company.
00:44:53Former employees, anyone that's dealt with them from other films,
00:44:57and they all have a lot of things to say,
00:45:00and they're all absolutely fascinating,
00:45:02but I can't say any of them because no one will go on record.
00:45:05The amounts of money that are being talked about are vast.
00:45:09230, 240 million ended up with Red Granite.
00:45:12Hollywood is actually quite a small place, really,
00:45:15and everyone knows everyone.
00:45:17You know, you don't want to really be the whistleblower.
00:45:19You don't want your name out there
00:45:20as the person that talks about stuff.
00:45:23Caprio, from what we understand, hasn't said anything.
00:45:26Obviously, he earned, potentially, upwards of 25 million
00:45:29from the Wolf of Wall Street.
00:45:31You know, if you want to continue to function in the industry,
00:45:33probably best to keep your mouth shut.
00:45:36I mean, did you have any direct dealings with RZA and Joey?
00:45:43Can we go on the record with that?
00:45:44Good luck.
00:45:50Leonardo DiCaprio, with Martin Scorsese,
00:45:52they're the biggest filmmakers on the planet.
00:45:56They make award-winning, Oscar-winning films.
00:46:00People love them.
00:46:01How long before they say,
00:46:04we didn't know,
00:46:05or, oh, God, this is terrible.
00:46:08We should never have done this.
00:46:10They're going to have to say something at some point.
00:46:12They're public figures.
00:46:26So, we're going to get the opposition figures of Malaysia,
00:46:31and get the reaction.
00:46:38Thank you so much for talking to us.
00:46:40This is Patrick from Hollywood Reporter.
00:46:43Can you hear me?
00:46:44Yeah, I can.
00:46:45Yeah, okay.
00:46:47So, we're at the Cannes Film Festival here, and...
00:46:51Wow, I'm envious.
00:46:53You should come next year.
00:46:56I can't get out of the country at the moment.
00:46:58Okay, I imagine you're very busy.
00:47:01No.
00:47:02No?
00:47:03My passport is still restricted.
00:47:05Oh, I see.
00:47:06I'm still not allowed to travel.
00:47:08Wow, what is the backstory to that?
00:47:10The reasons provided is that I'm currently being investigated
00:47:14for activities detrimental to parliamentary democracy,
00:47:17punishable by 20 years of jail.
00:47:19So, yeah, there you go.
00:47:21Wow.
00:47:27So, Wolf of Wall Street, for the people in Malaysia who have seen the film,
00:47:33do you think they have a bitter feeling about it?
00:47:35The feeling is that it is a parody of exactly what's happening with WMDBs.
00:47:42The financial crime, using complicated instruments,
00:47:47global financial institutions, international money laundering,
00:47:52are all present in WMDB itself.
00:47:57And with Jono and Eva Addison prominently displayed
00:48:01as the votes of Wall Street,
00:48:03it appears as if they are laughing at Malaysia.
00:48:22Well, good morning, all.
00:48:24Good morning and thank you all for being here.
00:48:26And we are here to announce a significant step in our ongoing work
00:48:30to combat global corruption.
00:48:33And today, the Department of Justice has filed a civil complaint
00:48:37and our complaint alleges that from 2009 through 2015,
00:48:43these officials and their associates conspired to misappropriate
00:48:47and launder billions of dollars from WMDB.
00:48:51The co-conspirators laundered their stolen funds
00:48:55through a complex web of opaque transactions
00:48:58and fraudulent shell companies with bank accounts
00:49:01in countries around the world.
00:49:03WMDB was created by the Malaysian government
00:49:06to promote economic development with the ultimate goal
00:49:09of improving the well-being of the Malaysian people.
00:49:13But unfortunately, sadly, tragically,
00:49:16a number of corrupt 1MDB officials treated this public trust
00:49:20as a personal bank account.
00:49:23Thank you.
00:49:24Are you shocked by the fact that 3.5 billion U.S. dollars
00:49:27have been stolen from the fund?
00:49:29No, no, no, hang on first.
00:49:31We have to establish the facts, yeah?
00:49:37And this is a civil action.
00:49:40This is not a criminal action.
00:49:41But I want to say categorically
00:49:46that we are serious about good governance.
00:49:51All right.
00:49:51Thank you.
00:49:52Thank you.
00:49:54The government will give its full cooperation
00:49:56to international parties investigating issues surrounding 1MDB.
00:50:06The Wolf of Wall Street earned just shy of 400 million dollars internationally.
00:50:11The idea of a film of that magnitude being seized
00:50:15and then owned by the U.S. government
00:50:18was not anything I've ever heard of before.
00:50:23The Hollywood angle,
00:50:24it's because it was such a growing story
00:50:27and it was all unravelling.
00:50:29It was something that requires a little bit more investigating.
00:50:35So last night, I was given a new update.
00:50:39Jolo, the man at the center of the whole 1MDB scandal,
00:50:44Jolo bought a 31 million dollar penthouse
00:50:47in the Time Warner building in New York.
00:50:51The real estate agent representing the cellar
00:50:54was Robert De Niro's son.
00:50:56No way.
00:50:57Rafael De Niro.
00:50:59And Robert De Niro met with the Malaysian Prime Minister
00:51:03and his wife in 2009 and 2010, I believe.
00:51:10And first in New York and then he went over to Malaysia
00:51:15and had lunch with Rosma Mansour, the Prime Minister's wife.
00:51:19We should check that out.
00:51:23Bob, you're on with Alex.
00:51:25Hello.
00:51:26Hello.
00:51:27Hey, Mr De Niro.
00:51:28Very nice to speak to you.
00:51:30I wanted to talk to you about this, you know,
00:51:33this Malaysian corruption scandal.
00:51:36How well did you, how well do you, or did you know Najib Razak,
00:51:40the Malaysian Prime Minister, and his wife, Rosma Mansour?
00:51:43I knew them, I met them a couple of times, here and there,
00:51:48and that's, you know, that's about it.
00:51:51I was going to do a movie with the, with Rizza, Raza.
00:51:55Rizza, yeah.
00:51:55We wanted to do a film, and we didn't, never happened.
00:51:58Okay.
00:51:59How well did you know Mr Jolo?
00:52:04I met him once.
00:52:05Okay, where was that?
00:52:06He went to Vegas at that point.
00:52:08He mentioned to me he wanted to finance the Irishman,
00:52:10but that was, you know, just talk.
00:52:12Okay.
00:52:13Your son, Raphael, was dealing with Joe on a property saline.
00:52:17I was aware of that, yes.
00:52:19Do you know how that came about?
00:52:21I don't know how it came about.
00:52:23Are you an investigative reporter?
00:52:25Because I think the authorities should be asking me these questions.
00:52:29You know, there's some huge allegations going around in Hollywood
00:52:31and the U.S., and I'm absolutely sure that you don't want your name
00:52:35associated with anything.
00:52:36It would just be nice to get to your, your...
00:52:38I don't care whether my name is associated.
00:52:41I didn't do anything, and I don't know what it is.
00:52:43And I know, and I'm aware of it, but, you know, I don't give a shit.
00:52:47So when you say this stuff, I'm annoyed.
00:52:49I've annoyed at your attitude and who you, you know?
00:52:51I'm sorry.
00:52:52I'm really sorry.
00:52:52I'm not trying to annoy you.
00:52:54Yeah, well, you're a...
00:52:55I don't fucking appreciate it.
00:52:57Excuse me.
00:52:58Get the fuck out of here.
00:53:00Goodbye.
00:53:06One thing that I found fascinating is that when I speak to the biggest names in Hollywood,
00:53:12I just don't think people are aware.
00:53:15No one actually then, they go, oh, God, yeah, we heard about that scandal, maybe.
00:53:18But then they don't turn and look at its actual effects in the country that it's hurt the most.
00:53:33The story, it opened my eyes as it goes international and so embarrassing.
00:53:42It also hit me hard.
00:53:45Small country like Malaysia now known because of global corruption.
00:53:51It drives my eagerness to know and explore more about Malaysia's political landscape.
00:53:59And from there, mindset or development of my thinking about politics is starting to change.
00:54:07And from there, I started to realize that the world of politics is not always smooth and well-being.
00:54:20But it can also cause corruption to the corruption.
00:54:25Yeah.
00:54:27All of the questions of 1MDB have been left unanswered until now.
00:54:34I don't understand why the Prime Minister acts as if nothing happened.
00:54:57I started a magazine called Gedong Cartoon.
00:55:02It is 100% political cartoon where we talk about issues like corruption.
00:55:09But the government banned the magazine immediately.
00:55:13Then the 8 officers came to my office, confiscated that more than 500 copies of the magazine and banned the
00:55:22magazine.
00:55:24During the interrogation, I told them,
00:55:27Look, you can ban my books, you can ban my cartoon, but you cannot ban my mind.
00:55:31I will keep drawing until the last drop of my ink.
00:55:39But after the 1MDB scandal in Malaysia,
00:55:43I am not sure whether I am the one who is going to end up in prison or the Prime
00:55:49Minister and the wife.
00:55:53I am lucky to have her actually.
00:55:56She is very cartoon-able.
00:56:01She carries a lot of handbags and also rings and shoes.
00:56:05People call her Emelda Marcos of Malaysia or Emelda Rosma.
00:56:10You know, she likes to shop.
00:56:14Nanjib had a credit card and he had spent $130,000 in a Chanel store in Honolulu.
00:56:22And we knew from the documents we had that this credit card was being funded by 1MDB Money.
00:56:30When they were in the Chanel and trying to make a purchase,
00:56:33there was some problem with the credit card.
00:56:36And Nanjib communicated with Joe to let him know that via BlackBerry messages
00:56:41because Joe was running Nanjib's accounts.
00:56:48What has triggered this new wave of interest for the ordinary Malaysians, especially in the villages,
00:56:56is the fact that the money from 1MDB,
00:57:00$27 million of it was actually used to buy a diamond necklace for the Prime Minister's wife.
00:57:25With 1MDB Money, they bought a diamond, $22 carat, $27 million of it for the wife of the Prime Minister.
00:57:34You know, it's $120 million for the diamond.
00:57:40And the average teacher gets paid $3,000 a month.
00:57:47And that's 12 months a year.
00:57:51That's 3,333 teachers you can finance with that one diamond for an entire year.
00:58:00That's a lot of teachers.
00:58:04That has aroused the degree of...
00:58:07of anger.
00:58:10Malaysians are, by and large, desensitised to corruption.
00:58:14But the scale of it, I think, is breaking people up.
00:58:19that they were able to do everything.
00:58:28That's so bad for them.
00:58:29We must have been sad.
00:58:31Let's imagine if the house you left here.
00:58:36Tiba-tiba.

01:03:53Eu vou tentar encontrar equanimidade.

01:05:37multi-decks, I think it's like 180 feet, and I think it has a crew of 30 people, so it's
01:05:43definitely a yacht that you would notice.
01:05:53So yeah, we saw the boat off the pier, east of Phuket.
01:05:57It was anchored offshore, and then all of a sudden, around 10 p.m. in the evening,
01:06:03starts setting off to the south at a rate of knots and takes off into the open sea.
01:06:13This is marine tracking. You can see all the boats moving around in real time, and it looks like the
01:06:20boat's gone around the southern tip of Phuket and was doing 12 knots, which is, you know, fairly fast speed.
01:06:29And then here, it's stopped, and that's 21 hours ago. So, I imagine they've turned off their identification.
01:06:37It's gone.
01:06:48We, as the young generation, have to do something. Rise up.

01:15:4015 milion Malaysians will vote in general elections that will determine if the National Foreign Coalition can extend its 60
01:15:47-year grip on power.
01:15:48They will choose between Prime Minister Najib Razak or the opposition led by 92-year-old former leader Mahathir Mohamad.
01:15:59Angger over the 1MDB fiasco led to the return of Mahathir.
01:16:05He has galvanized a fractured opposition to out what he calls a government of thieves, but the odds are stacked
01:16:11against them.
01:16:29Well, against the odds, Malaysia's former ruler Mahathir Mohamad is once again set to take control.
01:16:37He's led an opposition coalition to a shock victory.
01:16:41Disbelief and euphoria as long-suffering supporters of Malaysia's opposition finally realize what seemed a near-impossible dream.
01:16:57I accept the verdict of the people.
01:17:01Well, that's it. Six decades of one-party rule is over.
01:17:06We feel as if you're breathing new air today.
01:17:09How do you feel now?
01:17:11No, I feel very, very happy, you see.
01:17:13The feeling is just awesome.
01:17:18For Malaysia, I was very happy because it was going to happen, it was going to happen peacefully, and I
01:17:26was very proud of my country.
01:17:30But at the same time, I've been through a very eclectic set of emotions. It's very, very hard to describe.
01:17:37The Malaysian government has slapped a travel ban on ousted Prime Minister Najib Razak, just as he was about to
01:17:43leave the country on a private jet.
01:17:45Dr Mahathir is allowed to go after the billions of dollars allegedly stolen in the 1MDB corruption scandal.

01:19:03The boxes filled with handbags, jewellery and cash kept on coming.
01:19:08$17 million worth of designer handbags and so much cash, it took 22 officials with six counting machines three days
01:19:17to get through it.
01:19:17There were 284 boxes containing handbags and there were 72 bags containing cash, jewellery and watches.
01:19:29From the 72 bags, 35 contained cash and we have counted the cash and the cash amounting to $114 million.
