What are you expecting from the second year WR?
Transcript
00:00look um this team if they want to can be a major player at the trade deadline
00:04uh their play would have to dictate it and there's a lot of baseball to replay between now and then
00:10but unless they get you know white hot and scott harris can sell and not necessarily start a full
00:18scale rebuild he can sell and restock here a little bit and create some uh some budget
00:24maybe to be a player in in the offseason but there's not a lot of guys here
00:28that would be completely crippling from a oh yeah you move those guys you got no chance the next few
00:35years with the idea that if you do trade the crippling one the one that can set your organization
00:40back terek scoobel you get what espn calls a significant enormous i think the term used was
00:47an enormous price the team have to pay an enormous price to get them so uh in the meantime let's
00:52get
00:52some lions notes uh dan campbell raved about a player yesterday was isaac tesla what's a
01:00reasonable expectation for isaac tesla this coming season so it's rookie season he had what 16
01:08receptions yes six of them for touchdowns crazy um i mean the first few catches he made were
01:14highlight reel stuff the incredible one hand grab you know tiptoeing out of bounds or falling out of
01:21bounds and somehow keeps two feet in incredible stuff right he's got the size he's got speed
01:28he's got the ability to catch the football there's a lot to like with isaac tesla
01:33but keep in mind that he only he cut less than 20 passes last year doubling that seems like would
01:40be
01:40a reasonable expectation and yet i feel like lions fans are probably going to say like yeah 60 catches
01:4570 catches he's not the number two guy number two guy is jamo you have to keep that in mind
01:50obviously
01:51number one is amin ross st brown and then as far as pass catchers he's probably behind laporta i mean
01:55obviously he's a wide receiver but he's probably behind behind he's definitely behind laporta as a
02:00target targets yeah definitely behind jameer gibbs in terms of targets so how many catches
02:05can isaac tesla without injury right increasing his role so last year if you combine some guys like
02:11kalief raymond had 30 targets caught 24 to 30 targets that's a that's a pretty elite ratio it is but
02:19it also goes to how they used him what was do you have it in front of you what was
02:22uh sam laporta
02:23because sam laporta is a guy that when he threw it to him there were catches 40 out of 49
02:27okay there
02:28you go uh jameer gibbs was 77 out of 94 um so if you look at raymond's 30 targets tesla
02:36is 27 targets
02:37that's 57 targets between them tom kennedy had four so that's 61 targets
02:45from everybody at wide receiver not named jamo or amin ross st brown so i think temper the enthusiasm
02:53for what you real think you're going to expect out of isaac tesla because this isn't the days of
02:58you know the the run and shoot offense where you had three wide receivers going to go for a thousand
03:03yards that's not how things are done now it's maybe two receivers do that and the lions have had that
03:08but your tight end is your next target your running back is your next target so the way the lions
03:13have
03:13used receivers in the offense the third receiver it's not that they're an afterthought it's just that
03:18they've got other mouths to feed before they get to them so if if tesla gets let's say let's say
03:24he gets
03:2450 targets so is 35 or 30 30 reasonable for him to catch 30 out of 50 i would probably
03:33keep
03:33the number around 30 for reception for isaac tesla i would also probably play the under
03:40number of touchdown receptions that's an amazing ratio but he's just not as good as he might be
03:47he's got to be their fifth best receiving option so in comparison jamison williams was targeted 102
03:54times last year and caught 65 passes so you're looking at 65 66 catch rate there or 64 catch rate
04:03um it's not that he drops i mean actually jamu did it quite a few drops last year but
04:07sometimes you're just throwing them all to that receiver but it's not a catchable pass whatever
04:11the case is so 60 i don't think is is is too crazy to expect if you're gonna get targeted
04:1750 times
04:17it's 30 receptions so somewhere between 30 and 35 receptions i think is is probably a number i'd settle
04:24in on for your number three receiver what do you think kang what how big of a role do you
04:27think
04:27tesla is going to play this year well i think it progressively gets more than like you would hope
04:33with young players i think that i want to see him on the field more for big time um like
04:39big important
04:39downs like third down second fourth down right because that's i feel like the reason why they
04:44got him was he's a big target with a big catch radius very athletic he made six touchdown receptions
04:50last year which is an anomaly it seems like because that just doesn't happen with young receivers like
04:55that so i actually expect the touchdowns to maybe even go down a little bit like maybe five touchdowns
05:01you know but i do expect the catches to go up not significantly because there's so many targets like
05:05you guys mentioned but i do expect bigger like more third down conversion targets you know what i mean
05:11and catches well and how is this for a stat for you with isaac tesla of his 16 receptions 14
05:18of them
05:18went for first down all right so i just want more of those i guess because no it's your point
05:23i mean he's a
05:23guy he's proven he's reliable in this situation where we got to get a first down okay check down
05:28check down isaac tesla there is first down i'm pretty damn comfortable with him being the third
05:33wide receiver yeah yep uh next note hank fraley likes how blake miller is picking things up learning
05:40from mistakes and keeping his mouth shut he's in a position battle with larry borum for that right
05:47tackle spot and i'm a fraley fan i think he does we've seen him do pretty good things with young
05:54offensive linemen last year the results for the offensive line weren't what they've been but but
05:59basically two rookies in there playing at guards yeah as as jansen says and i kind of get more
06:05dismissive of this it's all they put the pads on yeah and that that's yeah hard hard to really measure
06:12what you're doing in the trenches right now it's all learning the probably learning the playbook
06:17and the calls and you know there's a little bit of but until they put the pads on i'm not
06:21sure
06:21anything's really all that significant uh right and it's i i think what i read it was encouraged though
06:29because it's it just seems like he knows his place he knows he keeps his mouth shut and he's going
06:34to
06:35make mistakes because he's a rookie but as long as you don't make the same mistake twice so you learn
06:39from that mistake and it seems like that's what he's doing whether it's and what are you really
06:43seeing in in otas you're it's it's regurgitating the the playbook right it's hey you missed your
06:49assignment that's not where you're supposed to go when you've got this defense in front of you
06:53so if he's learning from that that's great you know studying the playbook is is so huge the other
06:59stuff obviously is huge because it's it's the physical part of it but the mental part if you've got
07:04that down then you know you just settle into what things are with you from a physical standpoint
07:10yeah and this seemed to be a guy that they targeted and we should have known because kank predicted they
07:17would get blake miller out of the draft which is still unbelievable to me but they're going to trade
07:21up for him and they tried you know that's what's even more impressive you weren't the only one but it
07:26wasn't the most popular pick like in a pre-draft it seemed like it was the safest pick well people
07:32what i mean by buzz when the most popular prior to the draft there was a little bit of blake
07:36miller scuttlebutt there was a little bit of reporting out there not a ton and um so they had
07:44they had an expectation they have an expectation for this kid they think he's potentially going to
07:48be all that and if not they like boreham's film at right tackle but let's face it it'll be a
07:54disappointment if blake blake miller isn't starting yeah that'll be a disappointment and
07:58it'll also be a disappointment if monroe freeling ends up being you know a pro bowl offensive attack
08:03or caden proctor or any of the other guys that were associated with the lions uh with that said
08:08uh another guy and this is i think big for brad holmes tylich williams seems to think he'll have
08:12a much bigger impact this season and he feels way ahead of last year there has been more criticism
08:19of the last two drafts of brad holmes and a real early plug pull by a lot of fans on
08:24last year's
08:25draft class tylich williams having a much better season could go a long way towards alleviating
08:31fears that brad holmes has lost his draft touch yeah he's uh tylich williams said that he feels
08:37better moving around uh obviously he's got a whole year under his belt so he's not swimming in it like
08:43you are last year as a rookie um but it would be massive if he takes that year one to
08:50year two leap
08:50which is that's where you expect the big growth and ends up being a guy that you're counting on
08:55to be in that rotation constantly at defensive tackle and and starts making plays he made some
09:01plays last year he got in the way of a bunch of passes uh but he needs to uh he
09:06needs to take his
09:07game up two four eight five three nine 97 97 would the lions get this bold we'll get to that
09:15today
09:16at 11 48 it's karshen anderson here on a wednesday here on 97 one
