The Lions traded two firsts and a fourth for All-Pro DT Jeffrey Simmons.
Transcript
00:00Okay, we are two weeks inside two weeks of the trade deadline and a huge trade just went
00:05down this morning in the National Football League and this has more than a tangential
00:10impact on the Detroit Lions because a division rival just did it.
00:14The Bears acquired all pro defensive tackle Jeffrey Simmons from the Tennessee Titans.
00:20They have bolstered their defense.
00:23The Titans are getting a 20.
00:25This is an amazing price to pay.
00:28They are giving up their first round pick in 2027, a fourth round pick in 2027, and a
00:36first round pick in 2028 for Simmons and a 2028 fifth round pick.
00:44Simmons has a hundred million dollar guarantee on a contract that he signed in June.
00:51He's under contract for the next three years, the rest of this year and a couple more years.
00:57He was first team all pro last season.
01:00He posted a career best 11 sacks.
01:03He has four sacks in seven games this year.
01:05He is playing at a high level and the Bears just made an all in move.
01:11This is a very aggressive move by division rival.
01:18And our Lions, you know, I feel like the city felt before this trade was made, many in the
01:26city felt before this trade was made that if the Lions didn't make a trade, a significant
01:32trade, it would be disqualifying.
01:36But the Lions would have no shot.
01:39It's going to be interesting to watch this.
01:42I think about the three moves, the three biggest moves that have been made in the NFL that we
01:48have taken calls on in the last couple of years.
01:50Why couldn't the Lions?
01:53These are moves that were made, not moves that weren't made, moves that were made.
01:57Why couldn't the Lions get Sauce Gardner?
02:00Why couldn't the Lions get Micah Parsons?
02:02Why couldn't the Lions get Miles Garrett?
02:05All three of those moves.
02:09Indiana, the Indianapolis, the wheels have come off.
02:12Micah Parsons, their story is being written about why is this taking so long?
02:16Because he's been hurt.
02:18Miles Garrett, Rams three and four, and he's been hurt.
02:22Will Jeffrey Simmons to the Bears be different?
02:26Will Jeffrey Simmons to the Bears be a major factor in this division?
02:33And if you thought it was disqualifying for the Lions not to make a move before, it probably
02:40only significantly strengthens that resolve.
02:43It does.
02:44And yet, if I'm Chicago, you're going, whoa, that just happened.
02:49But if you're a Chicago fan, and then you might be going, I'm not sure why it happened.
02:54Bears have a pretty good defense to begin with.
02:56You know, they're actually one of the top teams in the league in sacks, in rushing yards
03:03against, and in total points.
03:06They're a really good defense.
03:08And now you're adding to it, they're adding to a strength.
03:11So does that change how Lions fans feel about what is absolutely necessary here for the Lions?
03:20I think this is kind of wild, and the price is massive for Chicago to give that up.
03:26And you pointed out, these players that have been traded haven't done a whole lot for those teams
03:33that they've been traded to.
03:35Well, there's other trades that have been successful, and certainly, but I think these are the three
03:40biggest that we have taken the fans have complained about the Lions not making.
03:44None of them have worked.
03:45Right.
03:45But here's, Adam Schefter tweeted this out nine minutes ago.
03:48Other defensive players traded for multiple first-round picks.
03:52Micah Parsons, Jalen Ramsey, Jamal Adams, Khalil Mack, and Max Crosby.
03:59That trade got nixed, and he got back with the Raiders.
04:02Out of those, is Jalen Ramsey the only one to help his team win a Super Bowl?
04:06I think so.
04:07So there's no guarantees, but I mean, this is a big move by the Bears.
04:11It's a big move.
04:11And I'm not sure it's all under the right position for them, but it would absolutely
04:16solidify what they have defensively.
04:18And if you see what the Vikings are doing with their defense, how they're winning games,
04:24you know, I kind of jokingly said defense wins championships there, but maybe we're getting
04:27back to some semblance of that.
04:28I mean, look, I've been a big believer in the last, like, five, six years that offense
04:34has been, it's been an offensive league.
04:36Offense wins championships.
04:37And Seattle did it last year.
04:38You look at some teams with some great defenses doing some good things.
04:41I could move off that position if we have another season along those lines.
04:46But here's the thing about the big ticket item.
04:48Like, there's no question that the Dodgers won the trade deadline.
04:54The Brewers went and got two relief pitchers and a marginal starter.
04:57Brewers just won the World Series.
04:59Like, these are aggressive moves.
05:02They're fun moves.
05:02They're awesome for the fans, and people get super excited.
05:06There's not a straight-line correlation.
05:08That doesn't mean I'm not in favor of trades.
05:11It does mean I don't think matching this move would be disqualifying.
05:17I would like to see them bolster their secondary and maybe some other positions as well.
05:22And what just happened to me?
05:24One of the more significant things that just happened here is, oh, well, hello, Titans.
05:30What else do you have to offer?
05:31Because there are some players on that roster that could become available that all of a sudden you go, all
05:37right, is Amani Hooker available?
05:40The safety.
05:41Who is still making plays for them in the secondary?
05:44He's got a couple of interceptions this year already.
05:48Is Tony Pollard as a backup running back?
05:51Could he be a piece?
05:52Well, he's definitely gotten a lot of interest around the league.
05:54He's gotten a lot of interest around the league.
05:56Like, that's another team that is now, it feels like accessibility to their players has opened up.
06:02And every day it feels like we're hearing more stories about players that are unhappy with where they're at.
06:07There are several Jets players that have expressed that interest.
06:10You get more players from Indianapolis saying that.
06:13But I do think that there's going to be a – this is – it's already been robust, and it's
06:18going to continue to be robust, I think, in the next less than two weeks leading up to the trade
06:23deadline.
06:24After Sunday's slate of games is done, I think business is going to be booming for the NFL on the
06:30following Monday and Tuesday.
06:32248-539-9797.
06:34Matt in Waterford.
06:35Hi, Matt.
06:36Hey, guys.
06:37So, real quick.
06:39I think – a trade like this for Detroit, like if you go – let's say we get Vita Vea
06:45for our defensive line.
06:48One, it plugs up the middle.
06:49Two, it helps the linebacker in court.
06:51Three, it helps both defensive ends.
06:53It massively would.
06:54But I think for Detroit, you don't need to go match toe for toe because you can't.
06:59But you need to kick the tires in Arizona and see if they're willing to take a first round for
07:03Buda Baker.
07:04You need that kind of player in the back.
07:05And you need a defensive tackle.
07:07You need to plug up the middle because we're not great against a run.
07:10Those two areas I think you have to address.
07:13And Brad Holmes has got to quit sitting on his laurel thinking we're building for the future.
07:17Because, you know, we heard it with the Tigers.
07:19How long is this future going to build?
07:21Because you're going to start – players are going to start leaving because your build is going to go so
07:26long.
07:27I mean, we have to do something here.
07:29The players – the good players aren't going to start leaving because the good players are signed for a long
07:34term, Matt.
07:36Yeah, I understand it.
07:37But they're also getting older every year.
07:39And I guess my thought is –
07:43I wouldn't compare.
07:44I wouldn't compare with the Tigers.
07:45Yeah, we're up against a hard break.
07:48I'm intrigued.
07:49Buda Baker for a first round pick?
07:51That might be a little much.
07:52I think he goes for less than that.
07:55I do too.
07:56And I want Buda Baker.
07:57Yes, you brought it up yesterday.
07:59Huge trade in the NFL.
08:01The Lions, Brad Holmes, TikTok, Carson Anderson, 97-1.
