14:00Where is your project?
14:01Thank you so much.
14:03What is your project?
14:04Let's hear it.
14:05Yes.
14:08Now, a legend at the piano.
14:11I'm delighted to chat and we meet.
14:13Let's hear it.
14:14Mike D.
14:19So, lots of people, of course, know and love you for your Grammy-winning and chart-topping Beastie Boys, but
14:26tonight you're here with your first solo record.
14:29Correct.
14:30It seems a long time before having a first solo record, but why was now the right time?
14:34I'm a late bloomer.
14:36Yeah?
14:36Yeah.
14:38Actually, I guess I was an early bloomer.
14:39I mean, I put on my first record when I was 16.
14:42But, no, I don't know.
14:43You know, I was, I was, I really loved the whole span of, I was really fortunate to be in
14:52a band with two people I really deeply loved.
14:54And, and we had an incredible journey together.
14:58And then when Adam Yao died, I was, you know, I think we were all really pretty devastated, right?
15:03You know, when you lose someone that you love to illness, it's, yeah, it's devastating.
15:09And also somebody who's a part of a creative process.
15:12Well, it's part of the creative process and sort of my older brother and, and, and so much, you know,
15:18so much force with, with my life.
15:20And then I think, you know, for really just a long time, it was just way too sad for me.
15:24To, to make music, to even like open up a, a music file, a Pro Tools file, whatever, I would
15:30just get sad.
15:32But then, I don't know, you know, time has a funny way of sort of like changing your relationship with
15:39things.
15:39So, here I am.
15:41Tell us who your new collaborators are.
15:43Yeah.
15:44Well, that's another, another part of the journey.
15:46So, I'm very fortunate.
15:47I'm in a band.
15:48In the 5D are two of my sons over there, Davis Diamond, Skylar Diamond.
15:53Raise your hands.
15:54Yeah.
15:55Landed about, landed about on the floor there.
15:58Yeah.
15:59And then, Will, Will on guitar.
16:02Oh, I love, I saw playing guitar in friends of mine's bands.
16:07And then, Eddie Roche was in the back.
16:09Yes.
16:11Eddie's another one.
16:12He's been a, a close friend for a long time.
16:15And we just, we've always like put records on for each other and been like, oh man, you know this,
16:19you know.
16:19It's like, it goes for, it goes deep.
16:22And then, uh, his son, Milo Roche, also in the 5D.
16:27Generations of Roche's.
16:28Yeah, yes, multiple generations.
16:31Exactly.
16:31The, the thing for me is the, the BC Boys sound and your sound really for me is, it's, it
16:36makes me think of New York in my mind.
16:38You know, that's just what, what it does for me.
16:40Yeah.
16:40Like, you know, like old jazz music makes me, makes me think of New Orleans or Scar from Jamaica.
16:44Yours is a sound of sort of modern New York.
16:46You grew up there.
16:47What was the, what was the New York sound that was inspiring you?
16:51I mean, like maybe of, of a certain age, but I think for me growing up in New York, when
16:56we grew up as a total magic time, because I think like all these, most people had kind of like
17:01abandoned New York City.
17:02Like New York City, when I was a little, little kid in the 1970s, most people had given up on
17:07it because there was, there was just like too much crime.
17:09The city was literally going bankrupt.
17:10Um, and so most families had moved out.
17:14So we kind of had this like, and, but at the same time, it was this incredible place where people
17:20from all over the world would move to New York to just be their, their own freaky self of whoever
17:28they were.
17:29And they were free to do that.
17:30And it wasn't expensive.
17:31And so, you know, you, I mean, you kind of like can read about it now in books like Patty
17:35Smith's book, you know what I mean?
17:36You have all these individuals who could do anything.
17:39And then we were these kids that we were allowed to run completely effing wild around all these, uh, clubs,
17:48literally, you know, I mean, I was literally like 15, 16 and all these clubs scene incredible.
17:53But that was the atmosphere that you were living in.
17:54That was your great west when you grew up.
17:56Well, and it was all there, like you were talking about jazz and here and that, you know, like in
17:59New York, you had, the thing is you had all of it happening all at the same time.
18:04So you could have like, you know, like the birth of kind of like house music happening in one club,
18:08the birth of hip hop music happening in another kind of like post punk, like bands like Bush Chetra and
18:14ESG and like those bands.
18:16And, you know, it was just like, yeah, one of the things is you've been recently playing some very unusual
18:21venues, you know, and like me, you like an old strange room, like that's got magic to it.
18:27It's untouched like this room, for instance.
18:28Yeah. Yeah. Well, you and I were talking about how much we both love this room because it has this
18:33like faded glory, but I just kind of thought like that was kind of the thing of, you know, I
18:37haven't put out music in a long time.
18:39So I, and I definitely, in terms of introducing that music to the world, I, it was very important to
18:44me to play live.
18:45And I just thought, well, instead of playing, and when you play in a place that there's music on every
18:50week, everybody goes into that room with some expectation.
18:53Oh, this is like a place where I go hear dance, dance music. This is a place where I go
18:57see punk shows. This is a place where everybody has like an expectation.
19:01So what have we played at places where there's no, there's no expectation and people are like, what, where is
19:06this show?
19:07So I think we've, yeah, okay. So we had a roller rink in Brooklyn, but people, and then it turned
19:13out people weren't allowed to roller skate during the set, which bummed me out.
19:17Cause it, and then I made sense to me cause they were like, well, if you have a thousand people,
19:21roller skating could get kind of dangerous.
19:24Yeah. Lovely. Well, it's fantastic having you as a guest. What are you going to play for us in a
19:27moment?
19:28Um, well, the first song was a song called switch up. And then, uh, we're going to do a song
19:34called what we got for the next single.
19:36Very good. It's great to have you here. Thank you very much for joining us. Mike D.
19:42Very great.
19:46Thank you, Mike D.
19:48Next, an artist whose songs have been sung by Sam Smith, Bon Iver, and many others.
19:54He's been making extraordinary music for 50 years.
19:57I'm delighted to welcome him with a song dedicated to his wife and creative collaborator who joins him here tonight.
20:04We welcome Elizabeth Copeland and Beverly Glenn Copeland.
20:07Thank you, Mike D.

24:14That's all I know.
24:42The enchantment of his wonderful music.
24:45Thanks.
24:45Elizabeth Copeland and Beverly Glen Copeland.
24:52And now, a Grammy-winning performer performing one of her wonderful songs.
24:59Please welcome Baby Rose.
25:11I made it on a train to take me somewhere.
25:16You won't call my name.
25:19But every summer it doesn't feel like rain.
25:23I just need a little sun.
25:27Hey.
25:28I still remember why.
25:32I saw a future in your hazel eyes.
25:36But forever ran out of time.
25:41I blinked and it was done.
25:43Now I know you're not the one.
25:46I gave you all my love.
25:49Gave you all my love.
25:51Inside.
25:52Was it not enough?
25:53Was it not enough?
25:55This time.
25:57Baby, you're my love.
25:58Baby, you're my love.
26:00Inside.
26:00Inside.
26:01It was always yours.
26:02Always yours.
26:04But never mind.
26:06Ooh.
26:08Ooh.
26:08Ooh.
26:09Never mind.
26:10Hey.
26:12But never mind.
26:15Ooh.
26:16Ooh.
26:17Ooh.
26:17Ooh.
26:17Ooh.
26:17Never mind.
26:22Ooh.
26:23By the way.
26:25Just in case you were wondering.
26:29I don't hate you.
26:31I'm just over it.
26:33Oh.
26:34And I need a world of space.
26:36No.
26:37I'm not afraid.
26:39To love and lose.
26:42I guess that's more than I can say for you.
26:46You'll find your shelter in somebody new.
26:51Oh.
26:52And now whether the storm.
26:53We could have had it all.
26:55Oh.
26:58Give you all my love.
26:59Give you all my love.
27:01Give you all my love.
27:02Was it not enough?
27:03Was it not enough?
27:05This time.

27:16Give you all my love.
27:18Inside.
27:19Was it not enough?
27:21Was it not enough?
27:22This time.
27:23Baby, all my love, baby, all my love
27:26Inside it was always yours, it was always yours
27:31But never mind, ooh, never mind
27:39But never mind, ooh, never mind
27:52Never mind, just never, never mind
28:16Thank you, the wonderful voice of Baby Rose
28:22And now, you're welcome, Lola Young
28:32Great to have you here, Lola, how are you enjoying the show?
28:35Anybody you enjoy on the show particularly?
28:37That was just beautiful, Glenn
28:38I mean, everyone's been incredible, obviously
28:40And I'm a big man
28:44That made me cry a lot
28:45I was sitting there welling up
28:47Because, of course, you've made great music
28:48It's touched a lot of people
28:49So much so that you were given a Grammy
28:52I was
28:53And earlier, you played your new single
28:56Yeah
28:56From down here
28:58Now, who did you make that with?
28:59And what were the circumstances?
29:01I wrote that, yeah, literally the day after
29:03I was with James Blake and Jamila, his partner
29:07And we literally just sat in the studio
29:09It felt super real to me
29:11I was on a natural high
29:12And it's kind of funny
29:14Because I was talking about a missing eye in the song
29:16But it felt really
29:18It felt like the right song to release next
29:20It's very different
29:20Obviously, I'm such a
29:21I grew up listening to James Blake
29:23So that was a surreal moment for me
29:24But also, just having won a Grammy
29:28I felt this high
29:29And then I wanted to say something where like
29:33Just bridges the
29:34Bridges the music that's to come
29:35Because really this song is about
29:37You know, people know
29:39A little bit
29:39If you know a little bit about me
29:40You know the things I've been through
29:41And I did, you know
29:42Everyone misses that
29:44Whatever high it may be
29:45And I wanted to talk about that on record
29:47And just speak about how it feels
29:49Like miss miss miss miss feeling
29:51Miss feeling like this overwhelming sense of happiness
29:54Which is a good thing though
29:55For the next set of happiness and success as well
29:58Yeah, you know a recognition
29:59Yeah
30:00And the song sounds really great
30:01Thank you
30:02Where does music begin for you?
30:04I mean
30:07It begins from when I started playing the piano
30:11And like
30:12When I was really young
30:13Like
30:14But I would say maybe like
30:16In the womb really
30:17And I
30:18I've grown up in a musical household
30:20I listened to a lot of different stuff growing up
30:22A lot of like
30:25It was always music around me
30:26And I'd play the guitar and the piano
30:27So yeah
30:28Who was the first person you wanted to be?
30:31Oh
30:32I have two answers to this question
30:34One is depending on
30:36For this one I'll say Joni Mitchell
30:38It's between Joni Mitchell and Avril Lavigne
30:40That's the most weirdest combo
30:41No nice combo
30:42But yeah
30:43Avril Mitchell
30:44Avril Mitchell
30:44Yeah
30:46It's a good name actually
30:47For a character in a film
30:48Avril Mitchell
30:49Yeah
30:49Avril and Mitchell
30:50Yeah
30:50We should start that
30:52Now Messi obviously was a vast global hit
30:55It was
30:55I mean that must have been a huge career change for you really
30:58It was
30:59It was
31:00It was
31:00Yeah I mean sometimes a song can
31:02Have
31:03Like have a life of its own
31:04And just kinda
31:06And it changes your life a little bit to be honest
31:09Um
31:09But
31:10I just
31:11I just wanna create
31:13Continue
31:13Off the back of that
31:14It was a lot of like
31:15Success but
31:16I just wanna make music that I love now
31:18And music that I feel like is
31:20Is coming from a real place
31:21And obviously Messi now
31:22Can allow me to do that
31:23Yeah
31:24Now you've got lots and lots of fans
31:27From all over the world
31:28Yeah
31:28Also Sir Elton John
31:29Yeah
31:30How did that friendship begin?
31:32So
31:32Oh
31:34He must have
31:35He
31:35I think he emailed somebody
31:37But you know
31:38We have a great friendship
31:39He calls me
31:40He FaceTimes me from bed a lot
31:41You know
31:43Um
31:43That sounds weird
31:44It's not weird
31:45He just FaceTimes me like with his chest out
31:47Like
31:48Just kind of like
31:49Hello Lola
31:49I'm like hello darling
31:50And we just have these fun chats
31:52And
31:52Er
31:54It started like
31:55He just champions young artists
31:57I love that
31:58He's always done that
31:58He's been fantastic
31:59All of his life he's done that
32:00He's a very generous person
32:02Yes
32:02And it's great to have you here
32:03What are you going to play for us at the end then?
32:05I'm very a song called Dino
32:06It's a great song
32:07Thank you
32:08Thank you
32:09Thank you very much Lola Young
32:19Marvellous and the marvellous voice
32:21Next
32:22The great artist and prolific songwriter
32:24Please welcome
32:25Bonnie Prince Billy
32:37A letter came to your door today
32:41You opened it right up and threw it away
32:46Didn't want to be reminded of what it had to say
32:51Just as soon go lay on the floor
32:57Or beat someone senseless
33:00Or watch a cartoon
33:02Or paint all your windows
33:05To hide the full moon
33:07Tie yourself down like a genuine loom
33:12Becoming one with the monster within
33:19They keep trying to find you
33:23And you run away with your hands over your eyes
33:28And your mouth open wide
33:30To the same lonely hole
33:33You get lost in each day
33:35In fact nobody's friend
33:38Has got nothing inside
33:48The phone on your table
33:51Is ringing and ringing
33:53You leave it unanswered
33:57What could it be bringing
33:59Except truth
34:00And awareness
34:01And likely
34:02Unstringing
34:04Just as soon
34:05Go lay on the floor
34:08Or flesh cut your forearms
34:12Or blow out your brains
34:14Or open your windows
34:17To torrential rains
34:19Ensuring
34:21Ensuring an unending flow
34:23Ensuring an unending flow of raw pain
34:24Becoming one with the shadow within
34:31They keep trying to find you
34:35They keep trying to find you
34:35And you run away
34:37With your hands over your eyes
34:39And your mouth open wide
34:42To the same lonely hole
34:44You get lost in each day
34:47In fact nobody's friend
34:49Has got nothing inside
34:52You get lost in each day
34:54Ooh
34:58Ooh
34:59Ooh
35:00Ooh
35:04Ooh
35:05Ooh
35:06Ooh
35:08Ooh
35:08Ooh
35:20Someone is at your door
35:23She's knocking and she's knocking
35:25Your sense of contentment is reeling and rocking
35:30You don't have the strength to even think of unlocking
35:35Just as soon stay down on the floor
35:42And let the night come and watch the light change
35:48Ignore everything that is frightening or strange
35:53Allow isolation to fully derange
35:58Becoming one with the darkness within
36:07Which has never been anyone's friend
36:17They keep trying to find you
36:21And you run away with your hands over your eyes
36:26And your mouth open wide to the same lonely hole
36:31You get lost in each day
36:33In fact, nobody's friend has got nothing inside
37:02They keep trying to find you
41:01Thanks to all of my wonderful guests this evening and now let's finish with the brilliant Lola Young.
41:58Disappear, tell you no, make it clear
42:03I'm not coming back for 15 years
42:07I want to write a note, leave it with
42:11My next open neighbor, give a chance
42:14I want to get away, fall in
42:18Pack my bags and tell my dealer I'm missing
42:22Yeah, tell my dealer I'm missing
42:28I'll tell my dealer I spent all week
42:32Just trying to do something
42:36So maybe I should take a walk
42:40But no, not running
42:44I still love him
42:48The way I did when I was 19
42:51But it's not easy to let him know that
42:54I spent all week doing a whole load of nothing, nothing
43:00I want to get away, fall in
43:05Pack my bags, my drugs, disappear
43:09Tell you no, make it clear
43:13I'm not coming back for 15 years
43:17I want to write a note, leave it with
43:21My next open neighbor, give a shit
43:25I want to get away, fall in
43:29Pack my bags and tell my dealer I'm missing
