00:35Happy Friday, everyone.
00:36Thank you so much for tuning in.
00:39All right, all right, all right, all right.
00:41Coming up, why is Damien Lewis doing this?
00:45And it's actually, yeah, just a bit.
00:48Is Michael Fassbender the new Bond?
00:50What do you mean you're waiting to hear?
00:52Well, I mean, this is breaking news, by the way.
00:55And what is John McNally's favourite tipple?
00:58Is Pinot your wine of choice?
00:59Because it doesn't taste of anything.
01:01Yeah, it's like toilet dough.
01:04All right, all still to come, but now it's time for It's Your What's Up.
01:07Yay!
01:08It's your What's Up.
01:10It's your What's Up.
01:15It's your What's Up.
01:18It's your What's Up.
01:20It's your What's Up.
01:23OK, OK, OK, OK.
01:25Here I have a What's Up.
01:28And this is Genuine.
01:29It's from Gwen in Pen.
01:32Dear Chris, as much as I love pub genius, I can't help thinking, Will has been playing
01:36it a little safe this year.
01:40Any chance you might be able to get him to up the stakes?
01:43Well, let's give it a go.
01:44Here's Will!
01:53Will!
01:54Will!
01:56That's just turned into booing.
01:58This is not...
01:59Gwen in Pen says you're playing it safe.
02:01Yeah.
02:01Well, I mean, I've got the power of slow-mo.
02:04How's that sound?
02:04Well, you mean you'll do it and then we'll slow it down and then we'll show it?
02:07No, no, I've genuinely got the power of slow-mo.
02:09You mean you can do slow-mo?
02:10I can...
02:11Yeah, of course you can, yeah.
02:12What, you can actually do slow-mo?
02:13I can do anything you like in slow-mo.
02:16All right, go on then.
02:17OK, I'll prove it.
02:17Hang on.
02:18What do I do?
02:19I'll toss a coin in slow-mo.
02:20How about that?
02:21All right.
02:22Just a coin?
02:22OK, just in slow-mo.
02:23I just...
02:23All of these are countdown.
02:24OK.
02:26Three, two, one!
02:34It's the best one Tricky's ever done!
02:37And that's all we've got time for this week.
02:40All right, I mean, now that I've seen you do it, it's quite easy, that kind of slow-mo.
02:44OK, all right, I'll tell you what, I'll jump off the desk in slow-mo.
02:47For Gwen in pen?
02:47Yeah.
02:48OK, the wrist factor keeps on going up, Gwen.
02:51In slow-mo.
02:52In slow-mo.
02:53All right.
02:54We're not slowing it down, you are.
02:56Yeah, I'm slowing it down.
02:56Because you have the power of?
02:57I'm slowing it down.
02:59OK, come on.
03:01Three, two, one!
03:11And we're back.
03:13All right, but you have...
03:14Obviously, you need to now do the pub trick in slow-mo.
03:19OK, what I'm going to do, Chris, is I'm going to put this pint over my head without spilling
03:23a drop.
03:23How are we done?

03:40I'd like a drum roll, please.
03:41OK.
03:43Oh!
03:47Woo!
03:47Woo!
03:48Woo!
03:49Woo!
03:50Woo!
03:50Woo!
03:50All right, like never before, let's hear it for Will.
03:53Woo!
03:55Woo!
03:56Woo!
03:57Woo!
04:00Woo!
04:00Good work from Will there.
04:01Right, our next guest bewitched us in Billions and Band of Brothers and now we swap treading
04:07the boards for strumming the chords.
04:09His new album Sweet Chaos is out now and his tour begins in October, so let's get to it.
04:13It's the dashing Damien Lewis!
04:22I brought you a record Chris there you go there you go record player just so we can you know
04:30just put the record on it's your second album I thought it was like your fourth or your fifth
04:35it's your second my friend yes it's very good honestly well we're improving that we're trying
04:43to improve you try to improve each time don't you oh would you class yourself as a musician
04:47uh yes always always been a musician yeah uh but obviously uh only just released records in the
04:55last three years and had done quite a lot of acting before that so people know me as an actor
04:59yeah no we know about that you've done that um but yeah ever since I yeah I used to take
05:04my
05:04motorbike around Europe with a tent and a guitar on the back when my 20s and I used to play
05:08all
05:09over Europe on the streets uh busking so I've always done it and I suppose acting took off
05:15and I went that way and I didn't and anyway now I'm making records which I sort of feel like
05:22I
05:22should have been doing earlier yeah no it's the way I feel about it why the heck not you only
05:26live
05:26once and all that kind of stuff uh sweet cast tracks I'm not just saying it title track uh I
05:30think it's an absolute banger album launch signings leads Liverpool and Marlborough London Brighton
05:36Kingston and that's you've already done a couple of those so I've done a few so we're at Rough Trade
05:39East down in Brick Lane great isn't it what a laugh which is brilliant and what's the vibe at these
05:44signings what's going on you know do you I just play I play with um take the guitar legendary uh
05:49David Catelyn Birch who is in World Party wow remember World Party of course I do love World Party
05:54I just go out with him he's on the bass and he's got a beautiful voice and I'm just on
05:58my acoustic
05:59so we do a little stripped back sort of unplugged but plugged yeah set we stick them into some amps
06:05this is us we're tf unplugged but plugged unplugged and also plugging and also we're plugging you said
06:10it slightly differently unplugged but plugged yeah no excuse me and that immediately gave it a whole
06:16different excuse me feel you heard it differently so I mean you you hear what you're listening for
06:22just what I'm saying is I'm nicking it I'm nicking it for tonight because it's does your acting help
06:27you in that situation because it's all performative anyhow isn't it yeah I love I love yes I love
06:34playing on I love playing with other musicians that's the amazing thing I love writing the songs
06:38I love recording the songs but I love playing with brilliant musicians and making music it's that
06:43incredible thing where you know we have music around us all the time don't get me no one likes
06:48going to a theatre or to a cinema or an art gallery or a museum more than me and I
06:54love going with other
06:55people to do a thing and rub shoulders with other human beings get out of just get away from your
07:00telly or off your phone I love that that sort of communal shared experience is is critical for all
07:06of us I think to keep going but um but playing making music with wonderful musicians and hearing the
07:14thing take shape and then harmonizing with someone like David on stage and hearing that is
07:19is so pleasurable and people liking it so far people liking it so far that's that's the bonus
07:26so when you said before you know you were doing music and you're touring around and you're busking
07:30and all this kind of stuff and you're acting as well then the acting took off yeah um was it
07:35neck and
07:35neck was it if the music had taken off could you have gone that way instead I am a musician
07:41as well as
07:41an actor and I just hope that I hope you know there's lots of sort of chat about sort of
07:46oh actor makes record and everyone gets very and then yeah just a bit oh six I go do six
07:53and
07:53sevens for my daughter uh well I'll see some um by the way that's great for the trail can we
07:58just
07:58coming up later find out why Damien Lewis is doing this but uh that's literally how we'll start TFI
08:05but um do a bit but you know just hope people anyway just but I uh anyway the point is
08:15you know
08:15just hope people listen to the music and take it at face value and don't worry too much about
08:20well Kiefer Sutherland was in last week he's got his fourth album great album again really great album
08:25genuinely genuinely great album why the heck not uh the last time I saw you in America you were on
08:30the today show on the breakfast show they're talking about a film that they've already
08:33enjoyed or enjoying and we're not we have to wait till September what is that film
08:38it's called Pressure yeah and it is a film it's a very British film because it's a film about a
08:43weather forecast it is isn't it what what Brit doesn't like to talk about the weather or go and
08:49see a movie about it but it's the most important weather forecast of modern times it is very exciting
08:53I will say it's about the 72 hours where Eisenhower has to make a decision when to launch D-Day
08:58right
08:58and uh this man called Captain Stagg played beautifully by Andrew Scott is sent by Churchill
09:04uh to go and give the weather report and he says oh no no you can't go on June the
09:095th that would be
09:10terrible and Eisenhower played beautifully by Brendan Fraser and I know I want to go when I want to go
09:15and I bet I don't know when to go and why are you telling me different things from my own
09:19weather man
09:19and then Monty uh who I play is jumping up and down in the background like a terrier sort of
09:24going well
09:25we've got to go when we go because all the soldiers are ready and we must attack because I'm
09:30ready with everybody and he couldn't say his R's I'm not taking the piss out of Monty because obviously
09:35he was our great hero and we love it but he had a problem with his R's and uh anyway
09:40so uh so this
09:42was made into a beautiful play by David Haig and then adapted into a screenplay and this is the film
09:47when do they go when should they go how what's the risk to life yeah and got 300,000 people
09:55ready
09:56some of them already in the boats eating sleeping how do you keep it a secret and it ratchets up
10:01attention yeah I've seen I've seen clips and it's uh and it's gone people people are loving it it's
10:07here in September there's a bit of a gap I think I think they didn't want to release it in
10:11Europe and
10:11the rest of the world because everyone would be watching well presumably you'll be doing the
10:14rounds doing interviews again um and you don't need to come on our show not because we don't want
10:17you because we'll just use that bit yeah save it let's hear it for Damien Lewis and Damien's album
10:25his new album Sweet Chaos is out now right our next guest once dreamed of being a heavy metal guitarist
10:30became a Hollywood A-lister instead and somewhere in between it all race sports cars at Le Mans
10:35he's here to tell us all about season two of the brilliant agency on Paramount Plus which hits the
10:41screens on Sunday June 21st please welcome in all his splendor it's Michael Fassbender
10:59oh my gosh oh my gosh oh my gosh uh you know how much I love your show yeah don't
11:05you I'm
11:05really happy to hear that do I do I love it too much no I think you can't love it
11:10enough and you
11:10know what was great was it you know you said that in the first season yeah and it was you
11:14know it is a
11:14show that had a sort of slow burn in the first season kind of like reading a book you get
11:18to
11:18know the characters slowly and then it starts to really sort of amp up around episode four or five
11:23but this second season now it's just doesn't let off where it ended you know oh my gosh it's so
11:29good
11:30it's it's it's feature film it's five star feature film level super television and it you can't draw
11:36breath uh you I've watched eight one-hour episodes of the season two I haven't seen my family for like
11:42a
11:43week because of it yeah so your direct boss is Jeffrey Wright his boss and therefore your next
11:48bigger boss is Richard Gere yeah Richard Gere's boss is Dominic West and all of you your your actual
11:54boss is George Clooney yeah no I've had a good few interesting bosses yeah Ridley Scott yeah of course
12:00of course David Fincher you know some some amazing bosses and then maybe some not so
12:09oh my gosh yeah when you got the job uh with Tom Hanks your boss on um Band of Brothers
12:15yeah you
12:16also auditioned for Pearl Harbor that's right and you narrowly missed out uh to that uh some other guy
12:22Ben Affleck I think it was yeah it was a close one though okay so what happened to him how
12:27close
12:27were you to getting that job over here I don't think I was close to be honest but I might
12:31have got
12:31one of you know the smaller parts because usually you know when you go in and audition it's for the
12:35big part yeah yeah they might give you a smaller one but um they did send me a nice letter
12:39and said
12:39that they they liked the audition yeah I heard you this time I've heard you say that before and they
12:43don't bother doing that unless they sort of mean it because why would they it's never happened to
12:46me before or since all right so you've done all right so yeah no I listen I got lucky it
12:51was a very
12:52interesting time because I was working nights like unloading these lorries and I was doing like it was
12:56eight to seven in the morning so I didn't really have the energy for auditions there weren't many
13:00coming up but I said okay enough of the night work started working behind the bar again yeah
13:04monkey choose which was placed on queen's crescent and then those two auditions came literally the
13:10next week it was almost like sort of you know put sort of the energy out there and then I
13:15was
13:15lucky enough to get you know the the Band of Brothers gig in in various interviews that I've watched
13:20and read about you have said about the Band of Brothers prep that you went to a boot camp yes
13:27in some interviews I don't know if you know about this in some interviews you say it's 10 weeks in
13:31others you say it's 10 days it was 10 days was it okay I'm confusing it with 300 300 we
13:38did 10 weeks
13:39okay I mean you've been depends on the day depends what happened the night before I know but when you
13:43say when you say 10 weeks I'd go with the 10 weeks because I bought it yeah yeah you're like
13:47wow
13:47that was real okay so this is 10 days so 10 days was the first real physical you know you're
13:52in
13:52we went out to like a boot camp yeah in Hatfield and with Tom Hanks yeah yeah yeah was that
13:56the
13:56fittest you'd ever been in your life up to that point at the end of that I'm not sure you
14:02know it's
14:03more about like what you can do with lack of sleep all right I suppose which now I'm learning with
14:07children tell everyone tell everyone how come you and Alyssa got together there was nothing else to do
14:12and we were on a peninsula together in New Zealand this is a true story and we were living
14:17in like caravans the director wanted us there what were you making we're making a really beautiful
14:22film called light between oceans which is a great film yeah and uh director uh is Derek C in France
14:28and he likes you know to immerse you in the world so we were staying where you know he wanted
14:32us
14:33actually living in the house where we were living in you know as the as the couple in the in
14:37the show
14:37um in the film but you know we're like we don't want to live there and I said so so
14:41we got like
14:42these small little caravans we were all sort of lined up beside each other and I was here the
14:47director placed his in the middle which I thought hmm he likes to watch I mean he's a director I
14:52don't
14:52know but he sort of set the scene you know and and so I was like you know Alyssa and
14:57I started you
14:57know well I'd met her on the dance floor a year before in Toronto right and I thought I was
15:03a pretty
15:03good dancer it sounds terrible and then she started dancing and I've really felt like you
15:08know Steve Martin in The Jerk I was like wow I was so out of rhythm and then I met
15:12her again another
15:13dance floor and then we sort of ended up doing this film together so uh we sort of you know
15:19chemistry
15:20happened we started to sort of get together but I would sneak to her trailer at night and then at
15:254 30 in the morning I would sneak past his trailer oh my gosh yeah so we tried to keep
15:31it secret for
15:31like in case the grown-ups were watching that's so funny man and then we got married on screen
15:37and then you know we got married in real life people have talked to this morning and I know
15:40it's not the bond question uh but it is a rat it is bond adjacent yes people because they've just
15:45they've watched I say oh my it's exciting to find out I'm waiting to hear yeah everyone's waiting
15:49what do you mean you're waiting to hear well I mean uh I this is breaking news by the way
15:55no can you imagine you know that who is going to be you know the next bond and I always
15:59I always
16:00think that the bookies must be like don't tell us yet don't tell us yet because they must have
16:04been making a fortune through the years of people going you know betting on various what have you
16:07had nothing honestly you're doing no you're doing that martian line thing again aren't you I feel
16:13like I'm in curb your enthusiasm yeah so so yeah because of course you're you're a mate of tom's
16:21aren't you tom hardy yeah because we went to drama school together you're a band of brothering
16:25band of brothers together um I haven't seen one while last time I saw him was on a flight
16:30um but I don't you know I don't know if I have a feeling they're going to go younger you
16:35know
16:35because we had daniel craig sort of bond and the evolution of them yeah yeah yeah I would always
16:40be curious to see what was he like coming out of eden I think that's what they're going to do
16:44isn't it they're going to go back I think that's interesting they sort of have to I suppose
16:46yeah when you used to mention tom hardy and getting on a flight there do you still do the thing
16:51you know when you and you you've go back and forth over to america more than most people would I
16:55imagine maybe not as much not as much uh uh these days you know actually but um but the odd
17:00time
17:00yeah do you do you did you do you still get excited about who else on the plate yeah it's
17:05always nice
17:05you know when you're sitting in comfortable seats as well you're like whoa best ever other people on
17:11the same plane as you christopher walken come on seat behind me and it was a small flight it wasn't
17:18like one of those lounge back ones it was a small flight from montreal to new york
17:22and just just by chance and he was behind me in one of those single seat aisles you know or
17:26maybe
17:26two maximum uh and yeah just by chance and I was sitting there the whole time I was like gotta
17:31say
17:32something don't want to go and you know annoy him annoy him and then on the way out of the
17:36plane I was
17:36like excuse me mr walken he's like yeah and I was like um terrible can you keep on doing do
17:42um I'll try and do one let's say today I'm gonna cook a dish uh what is it chicken with

23:41so you're hosting and you're captaining yes i'm a team captain let's talk all about it over to you
23:50uh comedian uh comedian genius comedians the lineup the lineups are amazing like this is like
23:56old school royalty come on now it's there's a traitor's level it's it's beyond beyond
24:05i can say that because i don't host the visualized companion podcast on this one i host the main
24:10thing okay all right uh joanne's a team captain of course yeah rich and iwadi is a team yeah yeah
24:15and we have amazing guest uh guest comics and a comic will bring in uh an unacceptable opinion
24:20they read the top line to the audience yeah yeah the audience vote on whether they think it's
24:24unacceptable and then the comic has a chance to argue there yeah and it has to start off pretty
24:29unacceptable doesn't it yeah yeah yeah panel shows what is the secret sauce for a good one uh
24:33because you've both done loads haven't you done you've done i've done loads yeah i've done none
24:38really no this was an absolute bad isn't that weird i just think you have no i've done
24:42none why the heck not well well done i was never yeah i know yeah well i mean no one
24:48else was trying
24:48to bag me so i was i was an easy booking you were too busy doing all your things around
24:53no no not at all breaking america no i was sitting at home waiting for mock the week to call
24:56never
24:57rang the week mock the week i love it uh dara as a fellow irishman still no call yeah and
25:03then
25:03so i'd never i'd certainly i'd barely done a panel show let alone being a team captain right one
25:08so it was an absolute baptism of fire for me can you please tell everybody about your amazing
25:14london palladium record yes i held so good i held the record for uh most alcohol purchased in the
25:21london palladium of any show ever yeah and that's been around i mean i don't know how old i know
25:27yeah
25:28what's that 116 116 years thank you tilly by the way that's amazing 116 you lead them into it with
25:35the titles of your tour i know well i put alcohol in the in the titles was that the press
25:39a prosecco
25:39express tour the prosecco express tour that was the one yeah i think in leicester square they were
25:43drinking uh wine out of cups and stuff because they ran out of glasses um tour names can you come
25:49can you beat prosecco express absolutely not no i like the fact you just go nope no what's your one
25:55call what's your last one fresh hell is my new one that starts in january yeah yeah i just pick
26:00names that i think are cool yeah um joanne knows how to do a tour now you really do do
26:04you know my
26:05do you know my one now oh go on am i allowed to say it if i say it really
26:08slow well hang on a second
26:10have you have you written a tour show that you can't you can't say the title of well you know
26:13the name
26:13do you not know the name i know i can say it you can say it because it's too with
26:16that carl
26:16it sounded out properly pinophile pinophile is it that's a pinot grigio yes yeah yeah because you
26:24because you love wine yeah yeah it's pino your what your your wine of choice because it doesn't
26:29taste of anything oh yeah it's like toilet duck yeah you you we're very different yeah we are
26:35which is why this works yeah we don't know yeah let's see let's see how it goes do you still
26:41drink yeah
26:41okay so what would you i like to taste my wine right yeah okay okay a friend of mine used
26:47to
26:47only buy wine she didn't like so she didn't drink as much what cheap warm white wine from like aldi
26:53or little yeah and then that was her way of not becoming an uncle yeah she might have been
26:59when the reels get that extensive yeah that's a red flag yeah it is yeah unacceptable begins
27:04sunday july 5th on tlc and discovery plus who else is on it who else comes to join the fun
27:08oh my
27:09goodness we've got so rumish is doing it reese james is doing it maizey adams doing it fatty
27:13earl gurry's doing it roshan conaty tom davis roshan conaty catherine ryan's doing two episodes
27:18this is panel show royalty oh chris mccorson it's like every guest is a winner all right and who's
27:24been your favorite team member i couldn't say i love them all equally no but you could say i could
27:29know if i actually vote one off that would be unfair but say your favorite that's fine well i'm a
27:32big
27:32catherine ryan fan and when we were on the team together it was very and me catherine and fatia did
27:36an episode
27:37together and it was very it was very spice girl coded because i saw i saw catherine on one and
27:42she
27:43she was on richard's team so she she did one on each done two she's done two episodes yeah okay
27:47who's that was she best on do you think your rep or richard's app when she was on richard's team
27:54her opinion her main opinion was all men should have vasectomies and i think it's a real highlight of
27:59the show okay and then what was her i can't remember what her argument was on mine
28:04oh she didn't have the main opinion she was arguing against fatia did and fatia says that
28:09all marriages should be arranged which is well worth a watch as well okay so you just give us
28:12some of those it's not a spoiler is it nobody really minds no give us some of those unacceptable
28:16premises so we the royals should be paid more there's the vasectomies there's the arranged marriages
28:22there's uh the olympics is a waste of time that was chris mccorson yeah yeah these are all these
28:26are things that genuinely would get a gasp from the audience as well and you're you're one of the ones
28:31i
28:31saw um that you led the charge on was only men are funny yeah women aren't funny that was hilarious
28:36so that's around that's around called the stitch i believe that's around called the stitch that was
28:40hilarious we give someone a card and they don't know what the opinion is going to be they've not
28:44prepared this in any way right and they have to defend this opinion even though it's something
28:47they definitely disagree with so joanne had uh women aren't funny harriet kemsley had all single
28:53mothers are lazy and that for me this is bafta winning television yeah how's north america going
29:00the plan would be to squeeze a netflix special out of somebody netflix i assume
29:07i'd go to them first yeah i'm gonna go straight to their office with a shank
29:11when i get to l.a and just demand one and just sit in the lounge they give me one
29:15i know the the tour is you just you just have to keep tipping away do this you just have
29:20to keep
29:20tipping yeah there's nothing you can do and how are you in america yeah i've i went out there
29:24beginning of this year how many dates are you i toured i did maybe 20 22. have a little chat
29:29about
29:29that it's hard because some places you sell some places you sell really well i actually when i look
29:35that is uh that is ninja level radio hosting get two guests and go just have a chat about that
29:42when my american agent gave me my sales and because i'm going to like salt lake city and
29:47stuff which i i can't i'm like why you've got a huge mormon audience i have a huge mormon audience
29:52i know i know i need to i need to please them yeah i was looking at the what i
29:56thought were the sales
29:57and i was like las vegas three um uh salt lake city one i was at denver three this is
30:04so depressing
30:04and the major was like no they're the number of nights you're doing yeah i genuinely thought but no
30:08no no no sorry no no the sales were no much better then it was like oh salt lake city
30:14eight oh fam
30:15but it was like that's how bad i thought it was and that's pretty much like it's it's tough like
30:19it's a slog so it's probably like i was like put me in put me in a cozy 30s eater
30:23and i'll sell it
30:24out and i'll look fantastic would you be nervous ever oh god yeah you seem like the least nervous
30:29no absolutely ever born a hundred percent yeah i think well i i i think joanne like exudes this
30:36amazing confidence but i'm sure there must be nerves yeah i'm a sensitive little sally deep down
30:40i remember i did a there we did some um it was a charity gig in the albert hall like
30:45it was maybe
30:45after lockdown i can't remember i was so i won't tell you what i took but it was a lot
30:49of medication
30:51just to get me out there was any of it legal i was well i didn't get it legally but
30:55it is legal if
30:56you have a prescription yes okay if you're a horse
31:01if you have an equine prescription if you have some hooves and a suggestion of a tail
31:07maybe even the main legal in a way yeah yeah if other people are a lot of other people are
31:12allergic
31:13to you um but no i would suffer i would suffer with the nerves big time it depends what's at
31:20stake
31:21but even when you're talking about suffering the nerves you've become more relaxed yeah i know
31:25yeah i know i'm enjoying myself i think this is really nice it's so i've been wanting to meet
31:28you for ages well it's great to meet you honestly so many fans at the top of the tower people
31:33absolutely
31:33adore you i listen to you most mornings do you actually yeah yeah yeah i've tried to get on the
31:36show several times well you should thank you ed you just pop in you're my access point yeah he
31:42doesn't listen and he comes in anyway you yeah i listen come in anytime you don't want to
31:45just turn up downstairs they'll let you in you're always welcome eggs gamble joe and
31:49hey and don't miss their brilliant new tv show unacceptable on tlc still to come richard
31:56bacon and the legend that is lioness beth mead with a huge announcement but first
32:01take this in the break with their brand new single summer forever it's dodgy
32:05yeah
32:14when we thought about the future seems so far away
32:22seems so far away
32:38welcome back to tfi unplug and that was the brilliant dodgy and summer forever from the latest
32:45album hello beautiful still to come beth mead and something very special from frank skinner and
32:51david baddiel i wonder if you could possibly guess what that's gonna be our next guest is a
32:56telly top dog who's been lighting up our screens for over 30 years his new podcast why are you more
33:01successful than me um is out now it's brilliant with new episodes every thursday so we'll bring the
33:07breakfast and he'll bring home the richard bacon
33:17i love it
33:39yeah no it was brilliant it was brilliant wasn't it your last show or something it was it was my
33:43last night time show on five live for some reason i did it from my living room probably inspired by
33:47when you did tfi from your house it was great in the same street in the same street is where
33:51you
33:52did tfi yeah absolutely 100 and he said and he started so i said to him alan why are you
33:56more
33:56successful than me and he said uh anyone who's successful at some level is unhappy that success
34:02such an underbot i know but do you think there's anything in it that people who are really driven
34:07at their core have some unhappiness about well there's there's there's drive isn't there there's
34:12push and there's pull but then there's natural creativity and i think you know it's like what
34:17you know how do you how do you be happy well happiness comes and goes but you can always be
34:21happier even if you're really depressed you can be happier in that moment if you're really happy
34:25you can be happier still so you can always be happy or unhappy what i thought after we had that
34:28brunch with jimmy carr yeah is i walked away from that thinking because i've known you for a long
34:32time i thought you seemed like the happiest i've ever actually known you okay there's a reason
34:37for that her name is natasha i know you have one of those yours for rebecca yay let's hear it
34:43so excited though right let's let's talk about a bit more about america yeah go yeah okay so you're in
34:50america you land in america i mean it was a strange one because i quit my radio show to move
34:55to la i hadn't
34:56really thought it through you just went for it i just went for it and i went i had a
34:58show commissioned
34:59and it was an interview series where i was going to interview british people doing well in america
35:03my first guest was ricky gervais and my uh my visa got held up by the embassy and i couldn't
35:08get my
35:08passport back so i'd quit my job i'd got a show commission that i was hosting and producing and
35:13ricky was waiting for me in new york and i had to call him and say i can't get on
35:16the airplane
35:17because the embassy will not give me my visa or my passport right and the whole show collapsed and it
35:23cost so much money to collapse it they wouldn't put it back on its feet again so i moved there
35:28without a
35:28job so i had a year without a job god bless rebecca at this point i know yeah i know
35:34and
35:35never since but it was all i love i mean she absolutely is the core of my happiness she's
35:39wonderful as is natasha but i had no job for a year and i was about to come back and
35:45my agents
35:45caa got me a job in new york hosting a show for national geographic and my first days filming was
35:51i went
35:51for a hike with barack obama right who was still the president i'm so glad you got onto that yeah
35:56sorry
35:56that's where i was going oh was it yeah you've just cut to the chase there how the heck did
36:01that
36:01happen i just i just i got a job hosting a show on national geographic that has a big reputation
36:05and
36:05i was in new york and i got a call from the head of comms in that geo and he
36:08went just be careful and
36:09i went why and he said you're being monitored by the secret service and i was like standing in this
36:14hotel room having had a big night the night before and i was like yeah oh my gosh they weren't
36:18are they monitoring from now just as long as they weren't monitoring last night and then uh and then
36:24a week later i interviewed him in yosemite it was the dying months of his presidency he arrived in
36:30marine one and we're walking through these redwood trees and if you look at a photo it looks like it's
36:34just the two of us and i can see behind the cameras and they were just the secret service brought
36:38machine guns because they thought that assassins might hide behind the trees so there's a load of
36:43so we're walking through we're celebrating the centenary of america's park service but behind the
36:47cameras are just people with machine guns tracking backwards the whole time wow we're on a bear hunt
36:51yeah but seeing him arrive in marine one yeah for an interview with you was quite something and
36:57that's a high bar yeah isn't it i mean that's got to help with future guest booking yeah yeah
37:03i can imagine it helps enormously and it also just it helps you personally doesn't it when you when
37:07you land an interview like that i wouldn't know you've got me yeah exactly i've got the guy who met
37:14i've danced with a man who's danced with the girls who's danced with the prince of wales that's
37:18where i am that's basically it and so when you would like it because it's high energy you once said
37:22to me about presenting and making shows it's all about energy of course it is it's definitely about
37:27but life's about energy isn't it it's actually not what you say it's just how you say it yeah you
37:30know that's it that's why that's why you're so gentle and so beautiful and so lovely i was
37:34good this is completely apropos of nothing but i just remembered my wife rebecca reminded me of
37:38something which is when we got engaged it was like 18 years ago we went to the groucho to meet
37:42you members club in london and um rebecca said to you um oh we've got engaged and you said to
37:47her
37:47you said to her you can you can you can go out with richard bacon you can hang out with
37:52richard
37:53bacon you can you can you can kiss richard bacon if you want to but you do not marry him
37:57well i was
37:58wrong and rebecca was right do you know why because rebecca knows everything and you will confirm that
38:03yeah and if rebecca doesn't know some things tash will know the other those things and if tash
38:07doesn't know some things rebecca will know they're similar in ways those two i think they say i think
38:10they have a similar because they're married to absolute nonsense richard great to see you man
38:15great to see you thank you richard bacon why are you more successful than me is out now it's a
38:18podcast it's available on apple on app on and it's on spotify wherever you get your podcasts
38:23wherever you all right let's hear from richard bacon
38:30all right still to come the legend that is lioness beth mead is going to be here
38:35plus a very special treat from frank skinner and david baddiel
38:40guess what that might be but first take this into the break it's hard five with their brand new
38:44single looking for fun
38:46hot five
38:47i'm just looking for fun
38:49I'm just looking for some.
38:53Something to set me free.
38:56Oh, yeah, and I'm not hurting no one.
39:01I'm just looking for fun.
39:04I want to look out goodly.
39:07So it's all right now.
39:11Fun, fun, fun, looking for fun.
39:15Fun, fun, looking for fun.
39:17Fun, fun, fun, looking for fun.
39:21Fun, fun, fun, looking for fun.
39:23Welcome back to TFI Unplugged.
39:27All right, that was hard fire with looking for fun
39:29from their new album, Burn Like The Sun.
39:33Our next guest is a legendary Lioness Arsenal icon.
39:36And as of a few hours ago, a Man City superstar.
39:42And she's now got a top podcast, The Beth Meacher,
39:44with the episodes dropping every Tuesday.
39:46You'll never guess who it is.
39:47Oh, yeah.
39:48We feel the need, the need for Beth Mead.
40:03Thank you to come on the show.
40:04This is so exciting.
40:05You've got big news as well, and you've got your podcast out.
40:08So Beth Mead, The Beth Mead Show.
40:10Mm-hmm.
40:11How are you finding it?
40:12How are you finding hosting the show?
40:13Yeah, I don't know about the name.
40:14I feel like it's a bit about me, but no, I'm enjoying it.
40:17Yeah.
40:17It's fun.
40:18I'm getting used to it.
40:19All right.
40:19So you've got a studio, but you've already taken it on the road,
40:21haven't you?
40:22I have taken it on the road.
40:23I've taken it to the Lionesses already.
40:24It looks so cool, that setup.
40:26Honestly.
40:27I mean, it's not bad.
40:28Okay, so where is your studio?
40:30Where are you doing it mostly?
40:32And then tell us about when you took it to the camp.
40:35Yeah, I'm doing a lot of it here in London.
40:37Yeah?
40:38Yeah.
40:39I've never really done this stuff before.
40:41I've always been on the receiving end of it.
40:42You're really good at it.
40:43Yeah.
40:43Well, you're being polite, but it's fine.
40:45No, honestly, you are really good.
40:47It's a good show.
40:48I mean, I'm glad you enjoy it.
40:49Yeah, because people who you've invited on want to talk to you.
40:53Maisie Adam was amazing.
40:55George Stanway and GK Barry and Ella Rutherford as well.
40:58And when you took it to camp, you put sofas on the pitch.
41:02Now, only you would be allowed to do that.
41:04Right in the middle.
41:05I know.
41:05Right in the middle.
41:06No off-side on them sofas.
41:07That was so cool.
41:09So that's a full-size pitch.
41:12Indoor full-side pitch.
41:12The indoor 3G.
41:14How mad is that pitch?
41:15I know.
41:15They just let me put a couple of sofas in there and a couple of microphones.
41:18Because you're Beth Mead.
41:19Apparently so.
41:20Apparently so.
41:20Wow.
41:21Wow.
41:21So a couple of weeks ago, we all heard the news.
41:24You announced you were going to leave Arsenal.
41:26How long have you been there for?
41:28Highlights.
41:29Just give us a bit of that and then we'll get on to today's massive news.
41:32Yes.
41:34Nine and a half years at Arsenal.
41:36Legend.
41:36Legend.
41:37Come on, guys.
41:38Come on, Arsenal.
41:40What did you win while you were there?
41:42I've won a league.
41:44Yeah.
41:45Yeah.
41:45Yeah.
41:45A league cup.
41:46Yeah.
41:47And my favourite Champions League.
41:48Come on.
41:50A bit of a purple patch or a red and white patch, wasn't it?
41:53Well, yes.
41:54Okay.
41:54Now, did you know what you were going to do next when you announced you were-
41:58Look at that smile.
41:59When you announced you were leaving, because today it's all over the news.
42:05I had a few options.
42:06I wasn't sure on what it was going to look like, but yes, it is very much cemented right
42:11now.
42:11How does that work?
42:12Okay, we'll get on to the big news in a second, but how does that work when you say,
42:15I've got a few options?
42:17You know, do they come through your agent?
42:18Do they come through your friends or your partner?
42:20Do you hear whispers?
42:22How do those few options manifest themselves?
42:25I mean, I think when you become a free agent, clubs obviously come in and ask questions
42:31to your agent.
42:32Your agent obviously brings them to you, sees if they fit with you as a player, if it's
42:36something that you would like to do.
42:38And there was a few that I was excited about.
42:42I think obviously the thought of leaving Arsenal, I'm thinking of somewhere new.
42:45It never ever crossed my mind for a long time.
42:47So to start to have to think about that was a little bit weird, but yeah, I'm happy
42:51with my decision.
42:52Good for you.
42:53And so the clubs you turned down?
42:57I couldn't possibly say.
43:00Her reps are there going, don't ask that, don't ask that.
43:02I didn't expect her to answer it.
43:05Don't worry about it.
43:05Do you know what?
43:07I did it respectfully.
43:08Yeah, of course you did.
43:09Of course you did.
43:10Alright, so the big news is, a deal with Man City has been agreed.
43:15Yeah?
43:15Rumour has it.
43:17More than rumour.
43:18By the way, if you don't know, nobody does.
43:21So I mean, people said Man City is probably favourites to get you, your partner placed
43:27for Man City.
43:28And it says the deal has been agreed.
43:31Has it been signed?
43:34Possibly.
43:35Okay.
43:36Did you get a pen in your hand and put it to a piece of paper?
43:39With a fake piece of paper, yes.
43:40Did you?
43:40Okay.
43:41So has it happened then?
43:43We'll find out.
43:44We'll find out very soon.
43:45Alright.
43:46It's, yeah.
43:47I mean, it's football.
43:48There's no secrets anymore, is there?
43:50Alright, okay.
43:50Oh, so it's not officially been announced then?
43:52No.
43:53Officially, no.
43:54Should we officially announce it now?
43:59Okay, hang on a minute.
44:00I told you.
44:01Rumour has it.
44:01Rumour has it.
44:02Boom, boom.
