00:00Boy, I really hope his comedy act is going to be funny, because if not, the audience is going to
00:03eat him alive.
00:04Here's your look in the neck of toys. Welcome to Derry. Ultimate Bob Gray is Pennywise.
00:25From the twisted world of horror, author Stephen King and the new HBO series It, Welcome to Derry, comes a
00:31new NECA Ultimate action figure.
00:32Before Pennywise was a demonic clown, he was Bob Gray, a circus performer playing a clown on stage.
00:37Based on the show's flashback scenes, this 7-inch scale figure includes multiple interchangeable heads and hands, stage props, flowers,
00:44wooden beaver, wig, and wig stands.
00:46Bob sadly lost his spouse, but the show's got to go on.
00:48Before the rest of this review goes on, maybe we'll take the tape measure and see how tall Bob Gray
00:52stands as Pennywise.
00:54If I'm looking at this correctly, I'd like by now to think that I am.
00:58You're looking at the figure of Bob Gray standing 7 inches in height, or about 18 centimeters tall.
01:03Slim Pickings finding the remains of Bob Gray. Slim Pickings also finding Bob Gray around in local stores.
01:09But I did order him from NECA's online sites, bringing in, though, the other Pennywise the Clown figures.
01:14Starting first, though, with the many faces of Pennywise.
01:18Following up also with a figure that was also from Welcome to Derry.
01:21Here's what he looks like also with the blood-soaked Pennywise.
01:24Mind if I show you this?
01:25Inside with Bob Gray, you also get a background that can be displayed behind the figure.
01:29I think this is during one of his performances, where the bedside would be right here,
01:33and it would be like the remaining clown costume that his wife once wore.
01:37And Bob Gray, of course, starts dancing along with that.
01:40Unfortunately, though, we don't get that article of clothing.
01:43It would be nice, really, that they had found a way to include maybe, like, the remained outfits of his
01:47wife's clown costume.
01:48But sadly, though, we don't come included that.
01:50Nice, though, the fact that they actually take the time to include the background like this.
01:54Though, to be honest with you, just with the fleeting space.
01:56And it continues to fleet every moment.
01:59I just don't have the space required in order to have that on display behind Bob Gray.
02:04Let's rather look instead at the accessories that come included with the figure, Bob Gray.
02:07If you recognize Pennywise Clown's figures from NECA Toys, you'll probably recognize a lot of these accessory hands.
02:12He has, like, flat, relaxed jazz hands.
02:16He also comes with a couple of mauling hands.
02:19Or plodding hands.
02:20Or rather, both.
02:22And he also comes included with a balloon hand.
02:24And the weird thing about this, though, is the figure doesn't come included with a balloon.
02:27Now, he comes with, really, flowers.
02:29Technically, I suppose you could probably dowel the flowers in there as well and have him holding it that way.
02:33But I find always that the hole here is always too small.
02:37You have to take something a little bit bigger and dowel that larger to fit either a balloon, a string,
02:43or, in this case, to hold the flowers.
02:44He really already has a pinching hand on this side that just happens to also be on the same side
02:49as this hand.
02:50So I really don't feel like they necessarily need to waste the time, waste the plastic, to produce a hand
02:55we already have.
02:56I guess what we're also at it, too, the figure does come included with a pair of flowers.
02:59I'd say really a pair.
03:01They're not identical, but it comes with a long stem of flowers.
03:04And it comes with a little bud as well.
03:06The bud is more for the beaver.
03:08The what?
03:08The what?
03:09And the what?
03:09The bud is more for the beaver.
03:11That can fit in the beaver's hands.
03:12I guess technically, too, if you're looking at the stems, they're about the same size.
03:17So maybe you could probably put that also in the beaver's hand, too.
03:20One thing that's kind of interesting, though, is speaking of the backdrop, if we see the performance of Bob Gray,
03:26he acts out this entire scene where he's a happy-go-lucky clown.
03:30And there's all these little flowers that start to grow out, and he goes to grab them.
03:33They shoot back into the ground.
03:36I looked at this one right here, and I thought,
03:38I wonder if there would be a way to pry the flower out from inside the grassy knolls here,
03:43and that maybe inside there would be a hole.
03:46And you probably can see already where this is going.
03:48And then you'd be able to take the flower and fit that inside.
03:50Well, I tried as best as I could to try to pry the flower out.
03:54And the one decision, the one realization I came to,
03:57if I can actually show you guys here,
03:59there does not seem to be,
04:01can you see that?
04:02There doesn't, though, seem to be a hole on the inside.
04:05Which I thought would have made more sense,
04:07because then you could have taken the flower out,
04:08and then underneath the flower there would have been a hole,
04:10and then you'd be able to plant the flower into that.
04:13But that does not seem to be the case.
04:15If it is the case, I can't find it.
04:17It only seems to be just flat plastic underneath the flower.
04:20But again, you've got the larger ring of grass,
04:23then you've got, of course, the smaller ring that has the flower inside.
04:25You could also move that completely out of the way,
04:28put that off to the side.
04:29And you can also take the wooden beaver,
04:30and the beaver can sit inside of that as well.
04:33The beaver does have, actually, technically two different head sculpts.
04:36One, just a regular neutral face.
04:38If I just reach around here, the wig stand here,
04:41you also get a smiling face,
04:43which I think is a little bit cooler myself.
04:45There is a hole, a very small hole,
04:48that you can take the little booms here,
04:50and you can fit that inside the hand of the beaver.
04:53I hope he's not allergic to flowers,
04:55because that's pretty close.
04:57That looks almost like a lilac.
04:59Now, I'll be honest with you guys,
04:59I hate the smell of lilac.
05:01It smells like old church woman.
05:03It smells like what?
05:04It smells like if you go into a church,
05:06and you happen to sit in the pews,
05:07and there's an elderly woman.
05:09I'm sure I'm turning away elderly women that enjoy watching my content,
05:13but it smells like an old church woman.
05:16I don't like the smell of lilacs myself.
05:18Anyways, though, moving along,
05:20you could take that bud,
05:22or I think you can also take the flower here as well,
05:24and that fits into the hand.
05:26And by saying hand,
05:27it's basically just like two crisscrossed strips of plastic.
05:30I just dropped the flower.
05:32Let's pick it up right over here.
05:33There we go.
05:34But yeah, there's enough space at least to fit both the smaller,
05:37what I assume to be a lilac,
05:39and the larger flowers,
05:40which then the beaver could offer up to Bob Gray
05:43after he loses his wife.
05:45Sad, sad times.
05:46Oh, by the way, though,
05:48you can take the beaver head,
05:49and the head does rotate.
05:50The first time you get this out of the packaging,
05:52the head is going to be quite tight.
05:54With a little bit of luck,
05:56and a little bit of twisting,
05:57I finally was able not only just to budge the head,
05:59but to also pop it off as well.
06:03And then you can take the smiling beaver head,
06:05and pop that into place.
06:08It looks good.
06:08I mean, I really like that they included something like the beaver.
06:11And again, you can also turn the head tear too.
06:14Move those all out of the way.
06:15Then the figure, of course,
06:17does also come included with the wig stand.
06:20Now, the wig stand does come technically as two separate pieces.
06:24Of course, you've got the main wig piece
06:25that's going to be on Bob Gray's head.
06:27Technically, it doesn't really go on Bob Gray's head.
06:29And then you get the stand that at least holds the wig.
06:31I like that at least NECA includes stuff like this,
06:34because generally, though,
06:35when you get things like wigs,
06:37I would then throw the question out there.
06:39Well, it's fine and good that you include a wig
06:41that really doesn't fit on technically Bob Gray's head anyways.
06:44Had there only been a way to display the wig?
06:47Well, there is.
06:47There's a wig stand.
06:49The wig, though, the moment you add it onto the stand,
06:51it does make it a little bit heavier.
06:53So you'll find sometimes, though, the stand,
06:55even though it's not doing it right now.
06:56Of course it's not doing it right now.
06:58Normally, though, it would fall over
07:01just because it makes it a little bit more back heavy
07:03because there's so much more plastic on the back of the wig stand.
07:06But I like, though,
07:06that there's at least a storage space to hold the wig
07:08because technically you get an unmasked or un-makeuped Bob Gray.
07:14Unfortunately, though,
07:15just for the size of the head
07:16and the smaller size of the wig,
07:18it technically doesn't fit onto Bob Gray's head,
07:22which I guess is fine.
07:23It doesn't necessarily need to be on Bob anyways.
07:25I mean, you get already two head sculpts
07:27that have already the looks that he's wearing a wig.
07:30Putting this, though, on Bob Gray's head,
07:32I think just doesn't make much sense.
07:34I find one thing that doesn't make sense
07:36is that they chose this head sculpt.
07:39I would have rathered myself to have the one
07:41where he's got actually already the makeup on his face
07:43and he is already starting to get creepy.
07:46I think this is the one where the kid is found out in the woods
07:48and obviously Bob Gray's just standing there smoking a cigar.
07:52Granted, he doesn't come and include with a cigar,
07:54but I think that I would have rather, though,
07:56that he included the painted face
07:58rather than a clean face.
08:01There is a little bit of tracing here
08:03that you can see where he starts to either remove the makeup
08:05or he has started to put the makeup on,
08:08but I think I would have gone full out anyways
08:10because once you put this really onto Popeye,
08:13once you really put that on Pennywise's body,
08:16I feel like this head just doesn't make much sense.
08:19Now, if you gave him just a regular casual clothing Bob Gray,
08:21then yeah, absolutely, this head would be perfect for that,
08:24but I just don't think it necessarily works
08:26already having Pennywise's costume on.
08:29By the way, though, the figure does have two Pennywise head sculpts.
08:32One has a smiling Bob Gray
08:35and then one that has a weeping Bob Gray.
08:38And then the beaver offs from up the flowers.
08:41I like the sad face.
08:43I think that the regular face sculpt is really good there as well.
08:46Both in these cases, as you can see,
08:49it does look like the wig is a separate piece,
08:51so I like that they actually did that
08:52as opposed to just sculpting it as all one.
08:54They're not removable or anything like that.
08:56I don't think they necessarily need to be either.
08:58Now, just to actually put this guy down here for a second,
09:01I want to bring Bob Gray back in.
09:03Decapitated without the body Bob Gray.
09:05And I want to bring in also the chapter two Bob Gray.
09:09You know, this is a really nice expression.
09:12And I wish, sadly, though, that this wasn't the expression
09:15that they used with this head sculpt.
09:17Because I think just a regular...
09:19Because when he starts the dance and he opens up his act,
09:21he kind of has more of an open mouth like this,
09:23where he's, you know, of course, pleasing the audience
09:26and, like, cracking jokes and dancing around.
09:29I think that this could have been a better looking head sculpt
09:31versus just the smiling face.
09:33But just, though, to show you guys the two different Bob Grays.
09:36It's funny, though, that they actually gave him so much more hair
09:38in the Chapter 2 Bob Gray portrait,
09:40when really, though, the flashback, he actually...
09:43Well, he didn't...
09:43He wasn't as bald as this,
09:44but he had certainly a lot more thinning hair on the top.
09:48In case you are curious, though,
09:50again, there's the smiling face of Pennywise.
09:53Again, looks good.
09:54But I don't know, I would maybe entertain more the idea
09:57that if he had had this face,
09:58with a wig on the top, fully painted face,
10:01that might have made for better Bob Gray.
10:04And in case you are curious,
10:05you can go ahead and pop the head off quite easily off the post.
10:08If, let's just say, you did want to use the Chapter 2 Bob Gray head sculpt.
10:12I found it was tight to get on there.
10:14It almost does seem like the hole on Bob Gray's portrait
10:16is a little bit smaller.
10:18But with a little bit of twisting and a whole lot of luck,
10:21you could actually get the It Chapter 2 Bob Gray head on there as well,
10:24if you did want to go that route.
10:27Of course, you can also take the Bob Gray portrait.
10:29It would be certainly...
10:31It would be sucking.
10:33I mean, obviously, if you can get Bob Gray's head actually on Pennywise's body,
10:35you can.
10:36But does it...
10:37It just seems to me like it seems out of place.
10:39Like it doesn't really...
10:40Like it feels literally like it's a figure from another company
10:43or another character from a different line
10:46that we're now just trying to fit that on top of Pennywise's body.
10:49It just, for me, doesn't make any sense.
10:51I think painting the face, adding the white and the red,
10:54would have made this a much better Bob Gray.
10:56That, again, maybe this one.
10:59Maybe this expression probably would have worked just a little bit better.
11:02For the sad face, by the way, again, it works the exact same way.
11:05So there's the peg hole.
11:06There's the peg.
11:07And we'll just attach it onto the top like that.
11:10The few times that I have swapped out the face,
11:13it just doesn't feel like I'm putting enough pressure on there.
11:15Like I feel like the head isn't securely enough.
11:18But I mean, yet...
11:19Not that I would really say you should really do this.
11:21But holding it just by the head alone
11:24seems to stay pretty good in place.
11:26For the rest, though, of Bob Gray's body,
11:28it does really, again, look like they're just relying once again
11:30on the Pennywise from It Chapter 2.
11:35Doesn't really look at all like they've done anything differently
11:37to the two molds.
11:39Also, just the fact that Bob Gray is just a little bit lighter of a suit.
11:42And again, I don't have the other Pennywise from Welcome to Derry.
11:45I will be planning to pick that one up at a later date.
11:48But just to show you, though, the blood-soaked Pennywise,
11:51short of just the fact that there's a whole lot more red,
11:53it is seeming to be the exact same body.
11:57Same, same, same.
11:58All the way the same.
12:00The colors go, again, look really good.
12:01I love just the design of Pennywise from the later remake, It.
12:05And of course, Welcome to Derry.
12:06Welcome, Derry was a great series.
12:08Definitely looking forward to seeing what else they can do
12:10with the killer clown.
12:12For the figure's articulation,
12:14if you're familiar already with what we've gotten
12:16from NECA's offerings in the past,
12:18then this one obviously isn't going to be that much different.
12:20If we look at the way that the head rotates,
12:22there is, to be fair, a lot of wig on the back.
12:25Like, that's going to maybe cause a little bit of problem
12:27when it comes to rotating the head back and forth,
12:28maybe more so up and down.
12:30But again, yet, while I feel like the head
12:32doesn't stay securely on the ball peg,
12:35or the post peg,
12:36funny though enough, like, again, when I put it on there,
12:39it seems like it stays pretty securely.
12:41The arms do rotate all the way around.
12:44You can also hinge them out.
12:45But just by the frilled sleeves, unfortunately,
12:47if you ever wore a frilled sleeve shirt,
12:50like Jerry Springer, Jerry Seinfeld, for example,
12:52yeah, you'd have maybe a harder time to bring the arms out.
12:56That's as far really out as they seem to be able to go.
12:58After that, there seems resistance.
13:00And if there's resistance,
13:01that's telling you don't go any further.
13:04There is a bicep swivel back and forth.
13:07There's, as you can probably already see,
13:09there's a hinge and a hinge.
13:10So you get two hinges in the elbows.
13:12The hands do rotate all the way around.
13:15Sometimes, though, when you are rotating the arms,
13:18rotating the hands,
13:19sometimes it does pop off the peg.
13:20Like, just plug them back in place.
13:22Top of the torso, too,
13:23it does have a ball joint.
13:24So you can rotate that freely all the way around.
13:27Never, it seems to be the case,
13:29that you could get this guy in a dancing pose.
13:30I mean, it would be nice.
13:32I know it would ruin the sculpt.
13:34But if they put a cut right here on the side,
13:36open this up a bit,
13:37so you could actually get the leg to spread
13:39further than what it is.
13:41It's always going to hit itself on the sides.
13:44And that's going to prevent the legs
13:45from going any further.
13:46Granted, though, you could bring them
13:47further forward and back.
13:48In fact, they've allotted at least space here
13:50and space here.
13:51So you can bring the legs forward and back
13:53just a little bit.
13:54There's a swivel there at the top of the thigh.
13:55Double hinge on the knee.
13:57Articulation, though, back and forth here
13:59on the feet.
14:00And you can also rock them up and down.
14:01There is peg holes,
14:02in case you are curious,
14:04on the bottoms of Bob Gray's feet.
14:06I know, again, like,
14:07this is an argument to be made.
14:09Like, once again,
14:10they're just really relying
14:10on the same Pennywise body as before.
14:13But again, like,
14:14as we look at the lineage
14:15and the timeline
14:16for how Bob Gray became Pennywise,
14:18the costume really doesn't change
14:19all that much,
14:20so it does warrant why
14:21they could find a reason
14:23to use the mold again.
14:24Despite really having
14:25the same use of mold,
14:26the colors at least do change
14:28from one to the other.
14:29Much darker here,
14:30as you can see,
14:31with the many faces of Pennywise.
14:32A little bit lighter here
14:33for Bob Gray.
14:34And a whole lot more red
14:36with the blood-soaked Pennywise.
14:38Also from Welcome to Dairy.
14:39It's still a great-looking figure.
14:40I do want to get my hands also
14:42on the other Pennywise
14:43that we got from Welcome to Dairy.
14:45The one only few things
14:47I would probably say
14:47as a critique for the figure
14:48is not necessarily the fact
14:50the figure does have a wig stand.
14:51Actually, I think that's
14:52one of the better things.
14:53Again, I just don't like
14:54as much Bob Gray's portrait
14:57if we maybe, again,
14:58just gave him like a regular fatigue.
15:00If we gave him just
15:00ultimate Bob Gray
15:02with a couple of different
15:03face portraits where, again,
15:04he could have makeup
15:05smeared on his face.
15:06But if you gave him
15:07just non-clothing,
15:08non-clown clothing,
15:09I think it would work
15:11a little bit better
15:11for that portrait.
15:12You know, again,
15:13I almost really feel like
15:14despite having more hair,
15:15which really isn't accurate,
15:16I think almost this would be
15:18a better Bob Gray portrait.
15:19And again, one other thing too,
15:21I'm kind of surprised again
15:22like the flower
15:23doesn't lift out of the grass.
15:25It just seemed like,
15:27I'm thinking like,
15:27I'm sure there would be a way
15:29to pop the flower out.
15:30And inside then would be a hole
15:32and you'd be able
15:32to pop the flower into that.
15:34Because, you know, again,
15:35like as he's doing his act,
15:36the flowers are sprouting
15:37out of the grass.
15:37I thought that maybe
15:38would have been one way around it.
15:39But it doesn't seem to be the case.
15:41Still, though,
15:42like the look of Bob Gray,
15:43you know, again,
15:44like while they're using
15:44again the same body,
15:45does not take anything
15:47really away from how cool
15:48the Bob Gray figure
15:49actually is.
15:50I'd rather find it
15:51kind of ironic,
15:52the fact that one thing
15:53I don't really like
15:53about the Bob Gray
15:54is Pennywise
15:55is actually Bob Gray
15:56on his own.
15:57The Bob Gray portrait,
15:58again, would have worked okay
15:59had they released the figure
16:01not wearing really
16:02the clown clothes.
16:03The moment though
16:04you wear the clown clothes,
16:05I feel like the figure's
16:06head sculpt doesn't really
16:07belong with the rest
16:08of his body.
16:09There's one scene,
16:10obviously,
16:11where Bob Gray
16:11doesn't have the wig
16:12on top of his head
16:13and he's got like
16:14the painted face.
16:15Very much similar
16:16to a regular Pennywise.
16:17I think, honestly,
16:19that would have worked
16:20better to include that
16:22with this body
16:23instead of the regular
16:23clean-faced Bob.
16:25Maybe, again,
16:26to entertain
16:27any potential
16:28possible ideas
16:29down the road,
16:29maybe NECA could release
16:30an ultimate Bob Gray
16:31that does not have him
16:33for the first time
16:34wearing a Pennywise clown suit
16:35and just give him
16:36the regular clothing.
16:37Then a head sculpt
16:38like that,
16:38I feel,
16:39would make better sense
16:40than to include it
16:41with this figure instead.
16:42Of course,
16:43it does also come
16:43include the beaver.
16:44I do dig the fact
16:45that the beaver
16:46does have two
16:46swappable heads.
16:48I like that they
16:48included the grass,
16:49a couple of flowers
16:50there as well.
16:51Still,
16:51it's perplexing to me
16:53that they have the flower
16:54that's stuck in the grass
16:55like that.
16:56I would have immediately
16:57looked at that
16:58and I did.
16:58I thought,
16:59okay,
16:59I'm sure the flower
17:00could pop out
17:01and then underneath that
17:02there would be a hole
17:03and you could take
17:04the stem of the risen flower
17:05and pop that in place instead.
17:08While prying it
17:09as best I could
17:10doesn't seem to be
17:10the case at all.
17:11So it's just going
17:12to be something
17:13that Bob's going
17:14to either have
17:14held in his hand
17:15or you could also
17:15put it into the beaver's hand
17:17which I think again
17:18is a nice touch.
17:19There's two Pennywise figures
17:20that we've looked at.
17:21Well,
17:21technically Bob Gray
17:22from Welcome to Dairy.
17:23There's another one
17:24I still want to get
17:24my hands on.
17:25I've been kind of
17:26looking around online.
17:27There's a few online sites
17:28that actually do have
17:28that other Pennywise.
17:29If I get the chance
17:30to grab that one,
17:31of course,
17:31a review will follow.
17:33So what do you guys
17:34think of Bob Gray
17:34as Pennywise?
17:35Let me know down below
17:36in the comments section.
17:36Do you also feel
17:37maybe like the clean
17:39Bob Gray head
17:39just doesn't belong
17:41with this body
17:42when you do decide
17:43to put it on the peg?
17:44Or do you think
17:45it works well?
17:45Or do you think
17:46they probably could have
17:46gone with a better
17:47or different portrait?
17:48What would you have
17:49done differently?
17:50What would you have
17:50changed to Bob Gray
17:52as Pennywise?
17:53If you guys did also
17:53enjoy this video,
17:54you can do it a solid
17:55and throw it a like.
17:56You guys want to stick
17:56around for more so?
17:57I do hope so.
17:58We're going to have
17:59some more content
17:59coming away.
18:00Yes, we will.
18:01If you need though
18:02your fix for NECA
18:03and DDD
18:04popping up at the very
18:05end of this video
18:05will be playlist
18:06not just for NECA
18:07but also for Pennywise
18:09figures that I've done
18:09as well.
18:10I've banked to feel
18:11enough of them
18:12that there's quite a lot
18:13still in that playlist.
18:14So if you want Pennywise
18:15in a playlist,
18:16you'll have it popped up.
18:17Sorry for spitting on everybody.
18:19You'll have it popped up
18:20at the end of this video.
18:21As always guys,
18:21thanks for watching.
