00:00Bill, I think we both agreed that Sorsby would never play college football again, probably last week.
00:07And albeit earlier this week, I think on Monday, the judge ruled in Lubbock, Texas, that, hey, you know what?
00:13We're going to issue in this injunction.
00:16We'll have the trial date will be set for early February, conveniently a week after the college football national championship.
00:27And I was listening to, oh, goodness, I forget who else.
00:32Actually, I was reading this online and someone who was an attorney in the state of Texas was like, well,
00:36they should appeal that to like the appellate court or whatever.
00:39And he was saying, the guy said, he goes, listen, you can do that, but they won't be able to
00:43hear this prior to the other appeal.
00:44They have too much going on.
00:46So that wouldn't even be the case.
00:48And when you heard all this and you see this transpire, Bill, what were your initial thoughts?
00:53So last week, even on this show, I think I said, you know, very little chance he ever takes a
00:59snap in college football.
01:00I've said that multiple times on here.
01:02Now that the rulings happen and I was asked the same question yesterday, I would say 80% chance he
01:08plays.
01:09Maybe higher because of all those reasons you just sketched out.
01:12Because legally, I'm not sure there's anything the NCAA or the Big 12 or anybody can do to stop the
01:21injunction from him playing.
01:23I guess it becomes the Big 12.
01:25It's in their court a little bit.
01:27But do you really think all those Big 12 schools are going to cancel games against Texas Tech over one
01:33player?
01:34Do you think they're going to cancel that money?
01:36Do you think Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yormark is going to let them cancel the money that's probably going to
01:42come from his return on that Friday night game against Houston, which will be a huge Big 12 game?
01:48It's all super unfortunate, too.
01:50You know, I don't want to pile on Brendan Sorsby.
01:52I get he's a college kid.
01:54But, you know, when it was accepted that we thought this would be a, you know, at minimum a season
02:00-long suspension and it's only two games for breaking college football's Cardinal sin, it really was a shocking ruling in
02:07my opinion.
02:08If it was six games, like half the season, would you feel differently about this?
02:14Probably a little bit.
02:16But, you know, I went back, looked at Calvin Ridley.
02:19Calvin Ridley, you know, he sat an entire season, right?
02:22And then he came back, had back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons.
02:26So it was, okay, you did the – and I think most of us thought, one, I don't remember anybody
02:32clamoring for Calvin Ridley to play that season once the news broke that he was gambling on games and those
02:38kind of things.
02:39Because it was just accepted, okay, that's going to be – he may not play again versus he sits for
02:44a year, comes back, has a pretty successful career.
02:48You know, this has happened in the NCAA before.
02:50You've had rulings that have kept guys out.
02:53And, you know, whether or not it was controversial, it happens.
02:57So, I mean, for Soresby, I just think – and then on top of the ruling, Bobby, the things that
03:03Kirby Hokut and Cody Campbell and Joey McGuire are saying are making this look so much worse.
03:11What do you think – obviously, you know, we live in the sports world where, you know, a lot of
03:18the things that happen, we have friends, people want to talk about it, they want to talk to you, get
03:23your opinion on it, just given your relationship with the sporting news and what you do and how you cover
03:28this stuff.
03:29Have you run across anybody, is there any type of sentiment where people think, you know what, this kid should
03:36play, you know, or has it all been overwhelmingly –
03:41this punishment is a joke, and he should probably be out the entirety of the season.
03:47If not, you know, you want to enter the supplemental draft or whatever, that's fine, but he should not be
03:53able to play at all in college football, at least this year.
03:56Yeah, I think, you know, one of the angles I'm trying to look through is, like, I'm thinking if I
04:01were Brendan Soresby's parents, what would I be thinking?
04:04And obviously, when you have a son, your son's going to make mistakes.
04:07It's at the college age, the high school age, and you try to teach through those mistakes, but this wasn't
04:14just like a couple bets.
04:15This was going on for a very long time, and if he truly does have a serious gambling addiction, is
04:22it really cured in 35 days?
04:25Is putting him in the college football environment, which is a huge pressure cooker, that's not going to help with
04:32a gambling addiction?
04:32It's probably not going to – well, I think, you know, being around the teammates and the support he'll get
04:37from the teammates is one,
04:39but you're also being thrown into an environment where when they go on the road to Baylor,
04:44and when they go on the – by the way, they play at Cincinnati this year.
04:48I'm sure he'll hear a few things when they go there.
04:50And how much of this – I think the cynical side of me, Bobby, says how much of this is
04:54about the NIL contract
04:56and what's owed and what money he's trying to get versus what money – Cincinnati's still coming after $1 million
05:03in a lawsuit against Soresby.
