Trench Leadership: A Podcast From the Front. EP64 hosted by Simon Kardynal. Putting Fear Into Perspective featuring Richard Blank

HELPING EMERGING LEADERS BUILD UPON THEIR LEADERSHIP FOUNDATION. Emerging leaders carry the burden of leading ‘in the trenches’, often feeling overwhelmed as they travel along their new role as the leader. In Trench Leadership: A Podcast From the Front, I use my personal and professional experience, my education (Master of Arts in Leadership), and guests to provide advice, inspiration, and practical tools to help emerging leaders find their path right in the trenches, helping them be the leader they want to be.

Fear is the most basic of human instincts. We need it to tell us when to be cognizant of impending danger.
The challenge with fear is that it can, and wants to, take over. Fear wants to keep us inside our comfort zones, keep us safe, secure in the knowledge that if we don’t push ourselves, we can’t get hurt.

But the question is, how can we, as leaders, harness the power of fear to not only survive, but thrive?

And so, in this episode, you’ll hear from Richard Blank, CEO for Costa Rica’s Call Centre, who will talk about his experiences with fear in the workplace. Richard will use his personal and professional examples to talk about how emerging leaders can live with their fear, use it to create strong and powerful teams. Lastly, Richard will give practical advice to leaders so they can use their fear to help themselves and their teams thrive.

00:00I completely agree with you. And we do feed off of each other when we're all doing okay. We will
00:05all kind of have that sense of things are okay. But if one person starts to get overwhelmed with
00:09having any type of fear for whatever the reason may be, then another will. These things are
00:14contagious. We can actually sense the concern and the stress levels that are coming off of other
00:20people. And the challenge of that is as the leader, it's our responsibility to lead the group.
00:25But if everyone's running around stressed out, they're looking to us to be that leader. And
00:29then if we're stressed out and we're running around, allowing our fear to overwhelm us,
00:34that's going to have a trickle-down effect as well. Do you have any thoughts on that at all?
00:38Well, let's use the parachute theory. First, you need the parachute so you'll survive the jump.
00:45Second, they need to teach you how to jump and how to land and what to do, how to repair
00:50it,
00:50use the emergency chute, even showing you how to pack it. So I believe that anybody that is
00:56jumping out of an airplane, if they've gone through that sort of training and that sort
01:00of preparation, they might still have butterflies. But obviously, the unknown gets reduced and the
01:07confidence gets increased. It's about giving a level playing field, certain resources to eliminate fear.
01:14So I hope for example, a little bit later.
01:15And if someone asks, if we had to get rid of this, it's about five feet of the
