Trench Leadership: A Podcast From the Front. EP64 hosted by Simon Kardynal. Putting Fear Into Perspective featuring Richard Blank

HELPING EMERGING LEADERS BUILD UPON THEIR LEADERSHIP FOUNDATION. Emerging leaders carry the burden of leading ‘in the trenches’, often feeling overwhelmed as they travel along their new role as the leader. In Trench Leadership: A Podcast From the Front, I use my personal and professional experience, my education (Master of Arts in Leadership), and guests to provide advice, inspiration, and practical tools to help emerging leaders find their path right in the trenches, helping them be the leader they want to be.

Fear is the most basic of human instincts. We need it to tell us when to be cognizant of impending danger.
The challenge with fear is that it can, and wants to, take over. Fear wants to keep us inside our comfort zones, keep us safe, secure in the knowledge that if we don’t push ourselves, we can’t get hurt.

But the question is, how can we, as leaders, harness the power of fear to not only survive, but thrive?

And so, in this episode, you’ll hear from Richard Blank, CEO for Costa Rica’s Call Centre, who will talk about his experiences with fear in the workplace. Richard will use his personal and professional examples to talk about how emerging leaders can live with their fear, use it to create strong and powerful teams. Lastly, Richard will give practical advice to leaders so they can use their fear to help themselves and their teams thrive.

00:00Well, thank you so much for offering a little bit about yourself and understanding how we
00:04got to this point, because you're right, there are many Debbie Downers out there.
00:08And I think one of the things that's interesting is in a lot of organizations, the metric that
00:13we tend to use, especially in North American culture, the metric that we tend to use to
00:18gauge our success is how quickly and how high up the particular rank structure, the chain
00:24of command from some of my military parlance, how quickly we get up these particular things.
00:30The irony of that is if you go too quickly or you do it in a different way or whatever,
00:35quite often you're being judged for being that person who's moving up the chain of command.
00:39And that causes a bunch of the Debbie Downers and it can be challenging and it can cause
00:44a lot of fear and anxiety for people.
00:46Do you have any thoughts on that at all?
00:48I most certainly do.
00:50The fact that I was never a supervisor, I was never a manager.
00:54I went from call center agent, best friends with the owner to owning my own company.
00:58So I guess what it did was it preserved my essence.
01:03So I never sold out.
01:05I didn't have to backstab or play office politics or be somebody that was not myself in order to
01:11get that promotion.
01:12So I guess my style was still very pure.
01:16But then again, the best leaders are the ones that set the example because if people are
01:22quitting and they're not working to their best potential, it is a reflection of the coach.
01:27I always believe that if a child is well behaved, well spoken and knows their pleas and thank
01:33yous, it's definitely a reflection of the parent.
01:36And so even though I'm not taking all of the credit of individuals that come into my call
01:41center, I believe in nurture.
01:44So if they're with me, I can get rid of bad habits.
01:46I can extend to them very good soft skills or maybe even some bedside manner.
01:51So those are the things I think you need to take a while.
01:51Yet relationship with the 좋은 system is maybe for you tolake yourself and be in debt.
01:51And so what I thought there is, I had to find a place where I feel like that, and you're
