The Morning Shift discusses the full on press by Texas Tech in an effort to communicate the university's perspective on embattled QB Brendan Sorsby, and whether they're just making things worse. Plus, Friday trivia!
Transcript
00:00Brennan Soresby got himself involved in gambling when he was part of the Indiana football program.
00:04He is seeking out help now for a gambling addiction.
00:07The NCAA said he cannot play because that is their rule.
00:10Brennan Soresby is suing the NCAA, and currently,
00:13Brennan Soresby is eligible to play for Texas Tech this fall
00:18after a judge gave him the injunction while he awaits his trial.
00:21And everyone's thrilled about it.
00:23Yeah, the fatigue is getting real with this kid.
00:27And I love, it's everyone's rule.
00:32I love people, and not you, but there are people that have kind of made the NCAA bad guys.
00:36Every time, every turn, the NCAA is a bad guy.
00:40Typically, they have been in a lot of different cases.
00:43I don't disagree.
00:44But this is one where it's like, I got their back, dog.
00:47Like, I'm with them.
00:50And just, I don't know, everything about this,
00:53it just gets sleazier and sleazier the more this story goes down the road
00:58because you got a kid that gets caught doing something wrong.
01:01Right.
01:02Then he gets help because he plays the mental health card.
01:07And then he uses the mental health card even further down the road to say,
01:11but if you don't let me play, that'll hurt my mental health even worse.
01:16And it's like, what?
01:18The amount of galaxy brain mental gymnastics that are going on around some of this stuff
01:24is breathtaking.
01:25And I say this as somebody who is absolutely exhausted from arguing with people
01:31about Pete Rose for years and years and years.
01:33And I'll say this.
01:33I did not feel sorry for Pete Rose because what happened to him was the consequences
01:38of his own actions.
01:39And I don't understand where this kid has gotten into a place where it's like,
01:43well, you know, it was wrong.
01:46Has he even said it's wrong?
01:47I don't know.
01:48But if it was wrong, it was because there's something wrong with me
01:50and I'm going to go get that fixed.
01:51And in the meantime, none of the things that would apply to virtually anybody else
01:55in any other walk of life or sports should apply to me at this time
01:59because I'm good at playing football and should still be able to do that
02:04even though I did something that was patently against pretty much any ethical
02:09and moral rule for actual players of a sport.
02:12And his first excuse was, well, I wanted to feel connected because I wasn't playing.
02:17Then it was an addiction.
02:19Get a fantasy team.
02:19And, you know, probably the thing that hasn't been mentioned enough,
02:27maybe I haven't talked about it or thought about it,
02:29is he's not just a guy on a team.
02:32He's not a wide receiver running routes.
02:34No.
02:35He's like the most important position in the sport.
02:39Every time he's on the field, the ball is in his hands.
02:42Right.
02:43Other than the random-ass trick play once every five games.
02:47But that aside.
02:48Every play.
02:48He controls everything.
02:50Yeah.
02:50And to your point, this is if you can impact the game,
02:55you should not be betting on the game.
02:57Whether or not you bet on yourself to win or not is irrelevant.
03:01Yes.
03:01It brings your character and decision-making into question,
03:04and thereby it puts your entire team in a terrible place.
03:09It puts your sport in a terrible place.
03:11And, again, to just go back to this, because it's really worth pointing out,
03:15you know, since we're doing movie quotes about you either die a hero
03:18or live long enough to become the villain,
03:20the NCAA has kind of been the opposite of that.
03:22They've just been the villain for so long,
03:23but somehow now they've managed to live long enough to become a hero
03:27if they're trying to do the right thing.
03:29Yeah.
03:29Now they're being told, hey, not so fast, guys.
03:31And they're on live support, by the way.
03:33That's Batman Dark Knight.
03:34Okay.
03:35Do you want to go ahead and give me a point?
03:37Harvey Dent.
03:37Doesn't count quite yet.
03:39To give you the update on what's happening now with all this,
03:42everyone except for everyone that's on Brendan Sorsby's side
03:45is upset about this injunction,
03:46and the Big 12 has been trying to figure out what they can do,
03:49talking about potentially not playing Texas Tech,
03:52and Brendan Sorsby's attorney is warning the Big 12 not to do anything
03:55because it could trigger additional legal action,
03:58and Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton backing this up,
04:01sent a letter to the Big 12 threatening legal action
04:04as if they attempt anything.
04:07Yeah.
04:07The lawyer thing is okay.
04:11I mean, you kind of figure that right.
04:12The Attorney General of the state, who is also, by the way,
04:17now running for Congress to come out and do this,
04:22man, really, it's June of an election year,
04:25and you just suddenly going to jump in here
04:27and make an asinine statement in my mind
04:31about how you're going to do all this stuff.
04:35First off, you might not even be in office at that position
04:39when it comes up that has a chance to happen.
04:41But secondly, you're only doing this because you're trying to win that region.
04:45And I don't know where he, I don't know where his,
04:47because it's, you know, obviously Congress is just split up.
04:50I don't know where his section is or whatever.
04:52But this is a political move in my eyes.
04:55It's always a political football.
04:57Yeah.
04:57Oh, wow.
04:59You're so witty.
05:00You're so good with phrases and words.
05:02But this is just, this is just exactly what it is.
05:05It's, and the, I think the leaders of Texas Tech yesterday
05:10put out, like, a 22-minute video talking about this,
05:14you're doing too much.
05:16Like, if you thought, if you thought that you were right in any way
05:21in this situation, you wouldn't have held,
05:24you wouldn't have had all these statements,
05:25you wouldn't have had a 22-minute video of a roundtable session
05:29talking about it.
05:30And I think Grant made a good point a few minutes ago.
05:34This isn't, like, this is, like, this goes again.
05:38There's nowhere you'd be able to play.
05:40Nowhere.
05:41And it's, like, you think you're special.
05:44This almost is getting on levels of narcissism.
05:46Well, it's entitlement for sure.
05:49And all of this.
05:51And I was looking at the lawyer, which, of course,
05:53is to be expected.
05:54Yeah.
05:54And everything that came out of that.
05:57It's just wild to me asking, like,
05:59what message does it send to student athletes
06:02if court orders are going to be, you know, disregarded?
06:04Like, let me tell you something.
06:06If your career is dependent on a court order,
06:10you've probably stepped into something you shouldn't be in,
06:12if that is the case, when it comes to gambling.
06:15I mean, like, I just...
06:17We went, remember in, like, the 90s
06:19where it felt like everybody was suing everybody?
06:21Yeah.
06:21Yeah, that hasn't changed.
06:22It's actually, no, I think it's going a step further now.
06:26It's like, oh, you bought this property?
06:30I'm going to get an injunction.
06:32You want to build a house here?
06:33I'm going to get an injunction.
06:34You want to start a competing business?
06:37I'm going to get an injunction.
06:38Yeah, it's like, that's where we're at.
06:40I mean, and it, look, it starts,
06:43politics started, and it's all trickling down.
06:46But it's like, any time someone says,
06:47if Mike Conte tells me something today
06:49that he had to do something,
06:51you know what I'm going to do?
06:53I'm going to file an injunction.
06:54Oh, there you go.
06:55I mean, you know what?
06:55I'm going to go to the state court,
06:58and I'm filing an injunction against my boss
07:00because he said I had to do this.
07:01I don't want to do that.
07:02But, like, where are we at in life?
07:04I know.
07:04And I wonder about his teammates.
07:07You know, that locker room is going to be
07:09a very interesting place.
07:10I know we've got some time until the season
07:13truly gets going,
07:14but how are they feeling about all of this?
07:17Like, outwardly, they have to support him, right?
07:20But inwardly, I would love to hear the monologue
07:24of what's happening.
07:25I think it's a phenomenal point.
07:27I know we've got to get to trivia.
07:28I'll just say this about it.
07:29And he single-handedly has turned you
07:32into a feel-good story about a team
07:35that has started to take advantage
07:36of the new rules with NIL.
07:38And now you're going to start making headway.
07:40You made the college football playoff last year
07:41ahead of a lot of blue bloods
07:42that haven't made it yet.
07:44And all that into the most hated team
07:48in the country.
07:48And everyone now is going to hate your team.
07:51And that is single-handedly
07:53because of Brendan Sorsby.
07:55Yeah, absolutely a mess.
07:57Guys, there's been an update every single day this week,
07:59so I'm sure on Monday we'll have another update
08:01for you on Brendan Sorsby.
08:03But right now, we've got to get to Mic'd Up.
08:06It's time to rant.
08:07Excuse me?
08:08It's time to rage.
08:09It's time for Mic'd Up.
08:11On the morning shift.
08:14Yes, it is Mic'd Up,
08:15but I'm taking over for him today
08:17as he is on vacation.
08:19So, I'm doing dude movie quote trivia
08:23with you two.
08:25And we're doing a different format today.
08:27We're going to go back and forth.
08:28I'm going to give you a movie quote,
08:29and you have a chance at three points on these.
08:31You have to give me the movie,
08:33the character, and the year.
08:35For each little factoid,
08:37you can give me about the movie quote.
08:39You get a point.
08:40Make sense to everyone?
08:41Makes sense.
08:42Yeah.
08:42You have one for the sweep today.
08:43Aye, aye, Captain.
08:45All right.
08:45Let's start with Bo.
08:48Say hello to my little friend.
08:50That is Scarface.
08:51Ding.
08:52And it was literally Scarface,
08:55the character that said that.
08:58And that movie came out in,
08:59I want to say, 1973.
09:02You're way off.
09:03What is his government name?
09:04Oh, it was 81.
09:05What's his government name?
09:09Oh, wait.
09:09I know this.
09:12I don't know.
09:13I know it, but I don't.
09:14It's one of those names
09:15where it started on the tip of my tongue,
09:16but I can't say it
09:17because you asked me.
09:19I don't know.
09:20I'll pass.
09:21Grant, would you like to steal?
09:22No.
09:23Okay.
09:24Tony Montana.
09:25Yes.
09:25Why can't I think of Tony Montana?
09:27Usually a rapper named after him.
09:29Tony Montana.
09:301983.
09:32Ten years off there.
09:33I had the three, right?
09:34You got a point, though.
09:35You got a point.
09:36On the board.
09:37Not getting shut out.
09:38There you go.
09:39No, no hitter.
09:40All right, Grant.
09:41You know my name,
09:42but who are you?
09:43Just another American
09:43who saw too many movies as a child?
09:45Another orphan of a bankrupt culture
09:47who thinks he's John Wayne?
09:48Rambo?
09:49It's Hans Gruber.
09:49Marshall Dillon?
09:50Hans Gruber.
09:51That's Die Hard,
09:53and that's 1989.
09:55No.
09:56Do you want to steal the year, Bo?
09:58I do.
09:58I believe it's 1988.
10:00That is 1988.
10:02All right, you guys are tied.
10:03Two and two.
10:05Goes back to you, Bo.
10:07I guess it comes down
10:08to a simple choice, really.
10:10Get busy living
10:11or get busy dying.
10:12That is Andy Dufresne
10:14from Shawshank Redemption,
10:1719.
10:18Actually, no, wait.
10:19That is...
10:20You've already given an answer.
10:21That is red,
10:21and it's 1994,
10:23Shawshank Redemption.
10:26You corrected yourself.
10:27You corrected yourself.
10:28I'm going to give it to you.
10:29You got all three points
10:30on that one.
10:32All right, Grant.
10:33So, Bo, you're at five points.
10:35Here's your next movie quote, Grant.
10:37I'm going to make him an offer
10:38he can't refuse.
10:40That would be Vito Corleone
10:42from The Godfather
10:47and 1971.
10:49You got The Godfather.
10:53Francis Ford Coppola.
10:54Francis Ford Coppola
10:55was the director.
10:57Okay.
10:58It's Vito Corleone.
10:58He's right on the video.
10:59Okay, okay.
11:00You got it then.
11:01Who won that?
11:02It was 1972, though.
11:04Hard.
11:05Yeah, yeah, yeah.
11:07Years are hard.
11:08Years are hard.
11:09Yeah.
11:09He knew the risks.
11:10He didn't have to be there.
11:12It rains.
11:13You get wet.
11:17I don't know.
11:18No?
11:18I got nothing on this one.
11:19No?
11:20Nope.
11:20All right, that is from,
11:21and I swear I looked up dude movies.
11:23Like, I purposely looked up guy movies.
11:25From Heat, 1995.
11:27That is one.
11:29Neil McCauley.
11:30Yeah, that is a movie that is,
11:31Heat's a really good movie,
11:33but that's one of the few movies
11:35I don't know a lot of lines from.
11:36I can give you a lot of quotes
11:36of them we can't see on the air
11:38from that particular movie.
11:40That's probably why she went with that one.
11:42Yeah, yeah, yeah.
11:42I had to look for good ones.
11:45All right.
11:45Queen ones.
11:46Grant, we'll move back to you.
11:48Snakes.
11:49Why did it have to be snakes?
11:51Indiana Jones.
11:53And that's from Raiders of the Lost Ark.
11:59Correct.
12:00And that is 1980.
12:05I want to steal.
12:07Well, yeah.
12:08I was going to say 1981, but.
12:10What is your final answer?
12:1281.
12:13Okay.
12:13He got it.
12:14I can give that because you gave me red.
12:16He mumbled it.
12:17Yeah.
12:18He got it afterwards.
12:19Okay.
12:20Bo, you ain't so bad.
12:22You ain't so bad.
12:22You ain't nothing.
12:23Come on, champ.
12:24Hit me in my face.
12:25My mother hits harder than that.
12:28That is Rocky III, Clubber Lang.
12:32And that year is.
12:36The year is tough, but I want to say it's 1983.
12:41Could be 84.
12:42Or 85.
12:44But I'm going to go with.
12:45I'm going to go with 85, actually.
12:48Okay.
12:49Can I steal who said it?
12:50Yeah.
12:52Because it's Rocky Balboa.
12:53It is Rocky.
12:55Taunting Clubber Lang in their rematch.
12:58Do you want to steal?
12:59Ain't so bad.
13:01You want to finish it?
13:02No.
13:03We're good.
13:03You got it.
13:04What year?
13:05Do you want to steal the year?
13:0684.
13:07No.
13:08It was 82.
13:0982, really?
13:1082.
13:11I didn't know those came out so quickly.
13:12Because the first one was 76 or 77?
13:1570.
13:16Well.
13:17Don't ask me.
13:18Yeah.
13:19Grant, moving back to you.
13:21The good news is the accelerator's fixed.
13:24The bad news is the transmission's screwed.
13:26I'm coming in.
13:29Bo is being tortured right now.
13:34Wow.
13:36It sounds familiar.
13:37But I don't know it.
13:38And he's going to steal it.
13:39And that's going to be all on.
13:41All right, Bo?
13:42That's Cole Trickle from Days of Thunder.
13:45And I believe it's 1990.
13:47That is correct.
13:48You got a turkey on that one.
13:49Well, I was like, really?
13:51I missed this.
13:52I didn't get this.
13:53And I thought Grant would do it.
13:55All right.
13:56Right now, the score is 9 to 8.
14:00Bo is in the lead.
14:01It's close.
14:02Nobody's leaving.
14:03Bo, this is for you.
14:03Nobody's leaving.
14:04Nobody's walking out on this fun, old-fashioned family Christmas.
14:09That is Christmas Vacation.
14:12It's Clark Griswold says it.
14:15And the year is definitely tough.
14:18But I am going to go with 87.
14:24Not the right year.
14:25You want to steal on the year, Grant?
14:2786.
14:28It is 89.
14:30I thought that was going to the other direction.
14:33Yeah.
14:34I mean, same.
14:35Okay.
14:35Well.
14:36All right.
14:3611 to 8.
14:38We got one more here.
14:40Just a reminder, fans.
14:41Coming up is our diehard night here at the stadium.
14:43Free admission to anyone who is actually alive the last time the Indians won a pennant.
14:48Harry Doyle, Major League, 1989.
14:49That is correct.
14:51That was your Days of Thunder.
14:52Yeah.
14:53Okay.
14:53Wait a minute.
14:54It's 11 to 11.
14:55Let me grab one more.
14:57Ring in.
14:58Okay?
15:00Life moves pretty fast.
15:01If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.
15:07Nothing on that.
15:09I feel like I should know this.
15:11I mean, I'm sure I should know it on the other side.
15:13But it is still before 7 a.m.
15:15So I'm just going to give myself a pass on this.
15:18That is Ferris Bueller.
15:19We'll get another one.
15:20I am serious.
15:21And don't call me Shirley.
15:23Bo.
15:23Airplane.
15:29I thought you said ring in.
15:30I did say ring in.
15:32I rang in with the answer.
15:33Sorry.
15:35Go ahead, Bo.
15:35I was going to say airplane.
15:38I just.
15:40I get why Grant.
15:41He was going to say airplane.
15:42I know why Grant just said the answer.
15:47But I was just going by regular trivia rules.
15:50No, I mean, yeah.
15:51Allie did give the rules to ring in.
15:53Due to semantics.
15:54Bo has won this round of due to movie trivia.
15:57However, I feel like you both proved that you know your movie quotes very well on that one.
16:00Yeah.
16:01I love the fact that he got the major league one.
16:04And then I was able to steal Days of Thunder.
16:06Because I'd have been.
16:06Although I can't.
16:07I'm very disappointed that I could not for some reason think of Tony Montana's name.
16:12Tony Montana.
16:13Which if you'd have asked Grant that and Grant would have been struggling, I'd be like,
16:17dude, come on.
16:18It's Tony Montana.
16:19Like, so very frustrated.
16:21I'm still irritated about missing Die Hard.
16:23The year.
16:24The year.
16:24The year.
16:24Okay, I was like, you got it.
