Grant & Danny react to Ian Rapoport's audio from yesterday, where he said that the Commanders would like to sign Aiyuk without trading for him.
Transcript
00:00We have evidence that the Commanders want Brandon Ayuk.
00:05We asked this rhetorically yesterday.
00:07Do we even know if they want this player?
00:09I keep asking the beat reporters that come on,
00:12Standig, Keim, whoever else, are we sure?
00:15They're not saying anything.
00:17They may, behind the scenes, know that they're not signing this guy,
00:20want nothing to do with him.
00:21We're all just expecting, because he wants to be here,
00:24because he's buddies with Jaden Daniels,
00:26because presumably Daniels would want him to be here,
00:28that they're going to sign him.
00:29But maybe Adam Peters was around him and goes,
00:31Yeah, I'm good.
00:32Maybe Dan Quinn goes,
00:33Brotherhood, culture, brotherhood, culture, brotherhood.
00:36I'm not doing that to the culture, brotherhood, culture, brotherhood, culture, brotherhood bit.
00:40And so, we just haven't known.
00:43There's been no reporting.
00:44There's been no one saying,
00:45here's what they think in that building.
00:47Until yesterday, on NFL Network,
00:51Ian Rappaport had this.
00:53First of all, here's what the San Francisco 49ers would like.
00:56They have his rights.
00:57He's not doing any guaranteed money,
00:59because he forfeited that by not showing up to his rehab.
01:02So, they would like to trade him,
01:03probably to the commanders with his old friend Jaden Daniels,
01:06and an organization that obviously knows him well,
01:09considering Adam Peters was in San Francisco,
01:11and all of that.
01:12What the commanders would like to do,
01:14is sign him without having to trade him.
01:16So, Tom, we're in a situation where nobody wants to move at all.
01:21They're all staring at each other.
01:23There's really no deadline to make a move at all.
01:26So, until and unless everyone gets tired of Brandon Hukes sending Instagram messages,
01:31this is going to be a storyline that takes us through the summer.
01:34I don't know if that goes down as a formal report,
01:38where he is passing along information that he got from a conversation
01:43with a high-ranking commanders official or not.
01:46But when you are the number one reporter at NFL Network,
01:49and the number two reporter in the game to Schefter,
01:51and you say on live television,
01:53that what the commanders want is to sign this player without having to trade for him,
01:58you are saying that you know that they are trying to sign Brandon Hukes
02:02and they're waiting for him to get cut.
02:04So, if there's anybody out there, and we get these calls every day,
02:06you don't know if they want to sign him.
02:08You're right.
02:08They haven't said that publicly.
02:10But this is as good to me as them saying as much.
02:14If this was wrong, they'd correct the record.
02:17They got NFL Network's information.
02:19Adam Peters has a phone number for Rap Sheet.
02:23Their PR staff has the intel they need to go out there and go,
02:26hey, you're putting out some bad info, man.
02:28We don't want to sign this guy.
02:29They haven't done that.
02:31And so, yes, they want to sign Brandon Hukes.
02:34Yes, they are planning on signing Brandon Hukes.
02:37And yes, they are going to sign Brandon Hukes.
02:40That is what I heard.
02:41And that's a reiteration.
02:43That's not new.
02:43But that was the most on the record we've heard an insider
02:47at any point recently on BA to DC.
02:50I want to offer one clarification, if I may.
02:54We all assume because it made too much intuitive sense, right?
02:58Where you see him sort of generally, whether it's the stupid hat on
03:02or whatever, talking about Ayuk.
03:04Daniels is his friend.
03:05Peters knows him from San Francisco.
03:07It's not happening with San Francisco anymore.
03:10He's going to leave.
03:10He's forfeited money, whatever his act is, whatever he's doing.
03:14Who cares?
03:14We're not talking about that part of it.
03:15But it just seemed to be this inevitable deal, right?
03:18Where it's not the odds-on favorite.
03:20It's kind of the only thing that makes intuitive sense at this point
03:22is going to Washington.
03:23You don't have anybody going, yeah, that is what we want
03:27from the Washington side.
03:28This is your first indicator of what seemed like common sense, right?
03:32Where it is, whether it's an official report or not,
03:35it is the first, to my knowledge.
03:37He's saying, this is what the commanders want.
03:38Exactly.
03:39We've assumed they've wanted that, and it makes a lot of sense.
03:43Yeah.
03:43And there hasn't been any water poured on that to say,
03:46we're not in that business.
03:47You crazy?
03:47We don't want anything to do with that dude or otherwise.
03:50That's why, all along, I've thought they were going to sign him.
03:53Yeah.
03:54It's because it's already become a bit of a distraction,
03:57not in a way that is detrimental or devastating or anything,
04:01but it has been a bit of a pain.
04:03Guys are answering questions about it, coming off the field at OTAs.
04:06Coaches are being asked about it.
04:07Dan Quinn's doing another media tour this week,
04:09and I heard him in three or four different places being asked about Brandon Ayuk.
04:13Like, if you don't want this player, just say it, end the charade,
04:17and now it's over, and you don't have to talk about it anymore.
04:19They have not done that.
04:20But I do wonder, being interested is one thing,
04:23is there something that Ayuk could do to change that?
04:27How many more weird videos?
04:28You know, how many more you're running from the belts?
04:31How many more I'm almost naked in my bathroom selfies?
04:35Or does that not matter, right?
04:37I mean, and it's possible that it just doesn't.
04:39But there's your evidence.
04:40You've got Rapsheet saying that he knows the Commanders want to sign this player,
04:45and they're just waiting for him to be released.
04:48Grant and Danny on the fan next.
04:51Eight years ago this week, the Stanley Cup, the Washington Capitals,
04:55brought back to D.C.
04:57Where were we?
04:57What are our fondest memories?
04:59We'll get into that next.
