Enough is enough for Grant & Danny. It's time for the Commanders to focus their efforts elsewhere.
Transcript
00:00We have also been taking your calls on Brandon Ayuk and Jaden Daniels at 800-636-1067.
00:06Ayuk has gone at Daniels on social media.
00:09That part's not debatable.
00:11I guess the question is, is he seriously mad at him?
00:15Is their relationship actually being frayed?
00:18They've unfollowed each other on social.
00:20Or what is the allegation when someone just says trolling and then they're trolling.
00:26That's all they're saying.
00:26And then they don't give me any more information.
00:28I guess the point is, they got together and said...
00:30They're playing a practical joke on all of us?
00:32Let's pull one over on everyone.
00:33We'll unfollow each other.
00:34You call me out via video and make fun of my relationship with my mom.
00:38And then I'll do a thumbs down.
00:40And then everyone will think we don't like each other.
00:42But we actually do.
00:43And we'll sign you as soon as they cut you.
00:44Yeah, here's the plan.
00:45I'll text you privately.
00:46You make fun of those things in a post where you tag me.
00:49Then give a real direct shot at me and my character talking about my mom.
00:55That's the plan?
00:55So I got nothing negative to say about Jaden Daniels other than the injury from last year.
01:01The injury history and durability concerns.
01:04That's pretty much the list for me.
01:05But if this is a concocted thing where he and Brandon Ayuk are together on some...
01:11I'll use the word troll even though I think that's misused.
01:13But like prank.
01:15That's not a good thing to be doing.
01:17I don't think that that's what Peyton Manning or Tom Brady or Warren Moon or some of the great quarterbacks
01:25of the era were doing.
01:26I guess luckily some of them didn't have to play at a time of social media.
01:30Of Instagram.
01:30But I don't think that's the case.
01:32Like this to me is not a referendum on Jaden Daniels.
01:35My perception is he is minding his business.
01:38He did nothing wrong.
01:39He was sitting at a soccer game and some loud, obnoxious person, possibly drunk, possibly not, screamed and cursed about
01:46Brandon Ayuk.
01:47He awkwardly laughed it off like you and me and every other reasonable person would have done.
01:52And then Ayuk came at him.
01:53I think that's what's happened.
01:54And as he always does, he has acted with grace and pretty decent class and decorum and dignity.
01:59He hasn't gone back at him or gotten involved on social media.
02:03He posted a thumbs down meme.
02:05You know, whatever that was supposed to have meant.
02:07Cool.
02:09I don't think like everyone wants to make this into like they're tricking you.
02:13I would like that less probably because now Daniels is involved.
02:16Either way, it's not what you think it is.
02:19Either way, this is bad for Ayuk and it should make a 1% chance of their signing him zero
02:26as far as I'm concerned.
02:28Yeah, what's what how do we get disqualifying?
02:30I just again, the thing that I want so badly that I won't get is pick one Pellisaro.
02:37Uh, Schefter, Rappaport, anybody you want, somebody send that message.
02:42We're not interested now.
02:44Come on.
02:44Come on, Washington football.
02:46Gentlemen, come on executives this week to be like, Hey, after that video, the commanders
02:50have, you know, pulled their interest in Jaden and they're not sure where the interest came
02:54from.
02:54They've never expressed interest.
02:55I mean, I would do tap dancing spin kicks.
02:58Let's go to Jay in LA listening on the Odyssey app.
03:00If you'd like to chime in 800-636-1067, we'll hit the calls on this.
03:05What's up, Jay?
03:06Hey, what's up, fellas?
03:07Hey, buddy.
03:08Um, honestly, I feel like my, I don't know if it's a fake back and forth between them
03:13two, but I feel like my opinion on them changed because we're not the same old commanders
03:18that we were four or five years ago.
03:20I mean, I know last year was tough because of injuries, but you know, we're coming off
03:24an NFC championship appearance and we have a franchise quarterback with legit expectations
03:28right now.
03:29So, I mean, I think we got to change the conversation about this team.
03:32Like Brandon, I, you, isn't just one variable.
03:34Like we're betting on the knee.
03:35You're betting on him returning to old form.
03:37You're betting that this situation might just be another one off, but why do we have
03:41to do all of that?
03:42Like, we don't need to have, live in a scarcity mindset.
03:44We should be trying to build our team with legit players and build a locker room that we
03:48say we want to build.
03:49So I don't think Brandon and I, you should be a part of this conversation anymore.
03:53If you wrote that down and asked for signatures, I would sign that petition.
03:57I agree with every word you just said.
03:59This is not what we're supposed to be doing.
04:00This is fighting for scraps from a table.
04:04We shouldn't even be sitting at this whole thing is a wasted exercise.
04:08All I want to talk about every day is they've got the third most cap space in the sport and
04:12a quarterback on a rookie deal, and they need more talent and we shouldn't be feeding
04:16out of this trough.
04:17This is a poison well.
04:20And we're like, can we drink this?
04:21This looks tasty.
04:22Please don't drink the poison.
04:24Please shoot it with fire and then ignore it forever.
04:29800-636-1067.
04:31Kevin's in Arlington.
04:32What's up, Kevin?
04:32Hey, Kev.
04:34Hey, fellas.
04:36This is making me feel like Jayden's outgrowing Brandon and I, you know, we remember two years
04:45ago, I was doing weird stuff involving Daniels and his contract squabbles before he got the
04:53big deal, you know?
04:54And now there's this, and frankly, it's just an unneeded distraction.
05:00As you just said, Danny, I wish we weren't even here now.
05:02I mean, I know they tried to get Dobbs and Pierce or whatever, but here we are at the scraps
05:08table and it's kind of an embarrassing place to be.
05:11For me, though, there is a thing called the personal conduct policy.
05:16And I think Roger Goodell needs to do the league a favor and the Niners and the commanders
05:23a favor and, you know, either publicly or offline say, listen, Brandon, you will need to reinstate
05:30your career with our league.
05:34And we're not appreciative of your putting down both, you know, you're not adding any
05:40positive value to the shield in how you're communicating about the league and its team
05:46and its individuals, cut it out.
05:48I mean, I don't know why that hasn't happened already, to be perfectly honest with you.
05:53This is just, you know, I wouldn't think the National Football League would want players
05:58to continue to, in the future, criticize teams like this openly, players.
06:03It's just not good for business.
06:04What do you all think about that?
06:06So I think it's a slippery slope when you start getting into players' businesses about
06:10what they're posting on social media.
06:12I know what you're saying, Kevin, but I'm with Grant on that one.
06:14Now, there's limits to that, for sure.
06:17There's levels to what I'm saying.
06:19You know, when somebody says something that is inappropriate, outrageous, hateful, if there
06:26are violations of policies, of course you intervene and suspensions can happen and fines
06:33can happen.
06:33But this is a guy who's basically acting a fool.
06:38You're allowed to act a fool.
06:40That doesn't break a whole lot of policies.
06:43Now, the 49ers might be able to suspend him for conduct detrimental or what have you.
06:47But I wouldn't want the NFL stepping in based on anything Brandon Ayuk has done.
06:51I just think teams should say, I'm not paying that person.
06:54I'm not employing that person.
06:56I think the market can handle this one.
06:58Exactly.
06:58You know?
06:58You are unserious, and this is a serious place of business, and I hope the Commanders are
07:03one of the teams that feel that way.
07:04Now, my fear, my nerves were that they weren't going to protect themselves.
07:11That they were just wandering closer and closer to the jellyfish, getting ready to get stung.
07:16Like, I'll touch the, you know, I want to touch the snake.
07:19The snake's going to bite.
07:20I want to touch the snake.
07:21And maybe it just so happened that they were saved from themselves here because rather than
07:29after he got here, the first time Jaden Daniels in a press conference said something he didn't
07:33like, or the first time he read something in the newspaper from Adam Peters that he didn't
07:37like, then he's in the locker room.
07:39Or he didn't get 10 targets.
07:41I mean, who knows?
07:42Possibly.
07:42And he's in the locker room going crazy.
07:44He did it beforehand.
07:46And so, hopefully, while I've been out, a lot of us have been out, this disqualifies
07:52him from a team standpoint.
07:54My interest and intrigue was the people that have been so obsessed with this idea and have
07:59defended him at every single turn, all of his ridiculous videos.
08:03Well, you don't understand.
08:04That's funny here.
08:05He's talking about walking away from the money.
08:07This video isn't actually bad.
08:08It shows that he's got morals and that he stands on business 10 toes down or whatever else.
08:14Okay, now he's talking about your quarterback.
08:16Now what?
08:17Now he's coming at Jaden Daniels.
08:19So, guy that's been defending this player for no reason, that's never caught a ball here,
08:23that's never done anything for this organization, because he puts on a hat and says he wants
08:27to be here, because it's a means to get out of the place that he is now.
08:30You're basically being used.
08:32We're pawns in this whole thing.
08:33Right.
08:34But now what?
08:35Well, I think it's like 50-50.
08:37A lot of people are like, okay, yeah, I'm out.
08:39I was wrong.
08:40There's still a group that's doubling down, tripling down, quadrupling down, going, oh, he's
08:44just joking.
08:44Him and Jaden are just being funny, and you're the idiot, because you don't understand how
08:49funny this is.
08:50No, no, no, no, no, no.
08:52You're right.
08:53Someone here should be ashamed.
08:56It's not me for not understanding the troll, though.
08:58You're miscalculating.
09:00If they're trolling, congratulations, you got me.
09:04Also, go over there.
09:06What a waste of time.
09:07Sit where all the people that don't play in the NFL sit.
09:09That's how this should act.
09:11Disco and Laurel, what's up?
09:13Hey, guys, how you doing?
09:14Good, buddy.
09:16Two quick points.
09:17You know, I don't think this is being talked about enough, and I'm not suggesting that
09:21this is to any level of the snotty years, but doesn't it, I mean, I thought we were
09:27done with this.
09:28Me too.
09:28I thought we were done with this off-season stuff.
09:32You know, why can't it just be football?
09:36Last season was Terry.
09:37The year before that, it was some kind of name stuff and things like that.
09:41And I'm going to say this point.
09:43I think with, and Grant, either one or both of you made the point last week that this
09:49could be avoided with some kind of a leak.
09:53Yeah, this has been what I've said all the time.
09:54This is the drama I beat, Disco.
09:55Yes.
09:56Yeah, that we're no longer.
09:58So, and initially when you guys said it, I kind of disagree because you can't advocate
10:03for, you know, no leaks like under, you know, no leaks.
10:07And then when it's conveniently, but I now agree with you, they have to protect Jane and
10:11Daniels from this nonsense.
10:13They need to, if they're not interested in him, they can leak this, they can end this,
10:18but nobody's talking about, we haven't, we still haven't had a quiet off-season under
10:23this new regime.
10:24Appreciate you, buddy.
10:25I mean, even last year.
10:26Yeah, last year, that's still business of football.
10:28In other words, that's a player.
10:29That's a contract.
10:31Yeah, it was a distraction.
10:32Yeah, it was a lot.
10:32But that still was a normal sort of course of football events.
10:36Sometimes guys are free agents.
10:37Sometimes guys' contracts expire.
10:39The decision, keep them, trade them, sign them, don't sign them, cut them, whatever.
10:43That's still normal football business.
10:44This is not.
10:45This is something else.
10:46And to me, there's a difference between the good ship leak a lot, which is things are
10:50going bad.
10:51I need to get my word out to let you know who's at fault, which is what the old regime
10:55was.
10:55And then there's the, we can control the fire here.
11:00No, no, no.
11:00But that's the difference between leaks, in my view.
11:03There's a, there are leaks that are good and leaks that are bad.
11:07Leak has a negative connotation.
11:09There's a pejorative to it.
11:11It probably, honestly, shouldn't even be called that.
11:14The business of operating in sports, right, is to help shape the conversation.
11:21That is the job of people within the organization.
11:24There's a public relations staff that has a feel for what the media is saying, how fans
11:29are feeling about it.
11:30They see something written that's wrong.
11:32They tell the person that wrote it, that's incorrect.
11:35If you're good at your job and the commanders have an award-winning group that's great at
11:39it, they have relationships with people in the market.
11:42Hey, Grant, I heard you talking about this.
11:44I just want you to know that's not the way we're thinking about it.
11:48The way we're thinking about it is dot, dot, dot.
11:51Now, I can do what I want with that information.
11:54There are water carriers who are just going to, at all costs, announce and say the thing
11:59the team wants you to say, and then the team can kind of play like a fiddle a little bit.
12:04And that's great for the team, but it's not critical thinking and it's not necessarily
12:08the truth.
12:09The truth is probably oftentimes somewhere in the middle.
12:11But I have been a little bit surprised by the lack of interest in shaping the conversation
12:18by this regime in general.
12:21I think that that is a easy enough thing to not care about what anybody thinks, what anybody's
12:26saying, what anybody's reporting, what anybody's saying as an analyst.
12:30When you're winning, it doesn't really matter.
12:32When you're losing, it matters more.
12:34And there are times where sitting out and just not caring about the noise really does
12:39you no good.
12:40You're not helping yourself.
12:42So this is one of those times where if you actually didn't want this player, if right
12:46now they're going, this guy is a maniac and he's now calling out our quarterback and
12:52you got on the phone with Jaden and he's like, yeah, he came up, my mom, like we're
12:56done, I'm not interested in playing with this guy.
12:58There is zero benefit for having your fan base kind of fight on social media about whether
13:04your quarterback is involved or he isn't.
13:06There's nothing good from that.
13:08From us suggesting like, you know, if Jaden is actually in on the prank, it's probably
13:12not a great look.
13:13Why do you want those conversations had?
13:16So to me, every day that there's silence from the team is a suggestion that they are
13:22interested in this player.
13:23Not only tolerated, but interested.
13:25Yeah.
13:25I mean, it's going to be news every time, by the way, for those that are tired of it.
13:28But A, I'm with you.
13:29But B, he keeps mentioning the team by name.
13:31He's mentioning your quarterback.
13:33He's wearing your hat.
13:33He's wearing your hat.
13:34He's saying to buy tickets at commanders.com.
13:36Like that's the other thing.
13:38If he never mentioned the team or was involved in like promoting that he's going there and
13:42it's just the assumption from the media because of Jaden's relationship and Peter's, that
13:47happens all the time.
13:48Stephon Diggs is, this is happening with Stephon Diggs right now.
13:50He's from the DMV.
13:51He's training at the University of Maryland, whatever.
13:53This is a dude who's wearing your hat saying he will be playing on your team.
13:57When Le'Veon Bell's doing his holdout or things, we covered it in the sense, hey, this is interesting
14:01with the ramifications of the sport and CBA and that's, that's something, but not like
14:05this.
14:05This is, this is your daily IUC video content.
14:07It's not going away.
14:08He's dragged you into this.
14:09Yes.
14:09And it would be so easy to dispel it.
14:11And I said this, Disco, to your point, I thought we were done with this.
14:15And if, and again, this is a conditional.
14:17If they are interested, I'm disappointed in them.
14:20If they want in, I think it's a, it's a black mark on them.
14:23If they are not interested, my question is you, this, you could stop all of this whenever
14:28you want it with a, with, with a text or with an email or, or, or just pulling someone
14:31aside, but if you're, if you don't feel like doing that and you're interested, I think
14:36less of you.
14:36I thought we were done with this.
14:37He's making you look bad.
14:38Yeah.
14:39And this is not the same because he's not committing crimes.
14:42Right.
14:42But in the same way that like when someone gets in trouble, the sentence starts, Danny
14:46Rue, a radio host of 106.7, the fan comma was caught doing this.
14:52He's wearing your hat in the videos as people are making fun of this person and suggesting
14:59that he's going through terrible things or whatever.
15:01He's the poster child for, you know, NFL players acting out or whatever.
15:06So there's zero reason for them not to use back channels to get the word out that they
15:14don't want this player unless they're okay doing it.
15:17But I come back to more than any team I've ever been around.
15:20And I mean this, this is 26 years of four teams in town and, you know, whatever else going
15:28in different places that I've covered sports, they do not really shape the discussion with
15:34background information.
15:35It's baffling to me.
15:37It's very Bella chicken in a sense.
15:40And that's where Peter's I got his teeth in New England.
15:43800-636-106.
15:45It's baffling.
15:45It's baffling.
15:45It's a baffling.
