00:00For many, major football tournaments are a chance to gather with friends, visit the pub or enjoy a drink or

00:07But Liverpool City Council is using the build-up to the World Cup to remind fans that getting behind the
00:12wheel after drinking can have serious and lasting consequences.
00:16According to Liverpool City Council, more than 1,600 people were arrested in the city during 2024 for drink or
00:23drug driving offences.
00:24The council says there were 36 collisions linked to driver impairment, with more than half involving alcohol.
00:31The figures highlight continuing challenge for road safety campaigners.
00:34Data provided by the council shows people aged between 40 and 49 were the group most likely to be impaired
00:41drivers.
00:41National figures also underline the scale of the issue.
00:43Liverpool City Council says one in six road fatalities across the country were found to have been caused by drink
00:49driving.
00:50In England, the legal alcohol limit for drivers is 35 micrograms of alcohol per 100 millilitres of breath.
00:57However, the council stresses there's no simple way to calculate how many drinks that represents,
01:03because factors such as age, weight, metabolism, food intake and type of alcohol consumed can all affect the result.
01:10The warning comes as the government reviews drink and drug driving laws as part of its new road safety strategy.
01:17Liverpool City Council says the campaign supports the Liverpool City Region Road Safety Strategy and its Vision Zero ambition
01:24to eliminate avoidable deaths and serious injuries on local roads by 2040.
