Liverpool City Council is taking action to tackle the devastating impact of alcohol harm across the city
00:06
as new figures show it's the leading cause of death and illness for people aged 15 to 49.
00:11
The council is highlighting the toll alcohol takes on individuals, families and communities
00:16
and setting out its vision to turn the tide through a new citywide alcohol strategy.
00:22
In 2022 alone, more than 4,450 people in Liverpool were admitted to hospital
00:29
for alcohol-specific conditions and tragically, 97 people lost their lives.
00:35
These figures are well above the national average.
00:38
Beyond the health risks, the wider impact is also alarming with more than 8,000 alcohol-related crimes
00:44
and nearly 600 children's social care referrals linked to parental drinking in just one year.
00:51
Director of Public Health Professor Matt Ashton warned that less actions taken,
00:56
up to 38,000 more people could be living with major illness by 2040, many linked to alcohol harm.
01:03
In response, the council is working with partners, including the NHS, Maerside Police and local universities
01:09
to develop a long-term strategy focused on six key areas, prevention, treatment, safety,
01:15
support for families, licensing, regulation and national advocacy.
01:19
The strategy is being shaped using local data and expert input with public consultation plans for this autumn.
01:26
A full launch is expected in January 2026.
01:29
Councillor Harry Doyle says it's not about stopping people from drinking,
01:32
but about promoting awareness, understanding the risks and offering support.
01:37
The message from a Liverpool council is clear.
01:40
It's time to rethink our relationship with alcohol for a healthier, fairer future.
