00:00So the annual Crimecystics published nationally are out today and we're celebrating in London
00:05street crime, the sort of neighbourhood crime, the things that people may be most worried about
00:10encountering, whether it's vehicle crime, being pickpocketed, being assaulted on the street,
00:15sort of these day-to-day local crimes that people are concerned about. Massive reductions in London,
00:21thousands, tens of thousands of fewer victims and we're here in Camden today because it's one of
00:27the most impressive areas where it's down by a quarter. In Westminster it's down by more than a
00:32third. That's a phenomenal effort and it's both classic policing, brilliant officers on the streets
00:38making a difference, as well as supported by clever technologies such as facial recognition cameras
00:43helping us capture wanted offenders or drones that are helping us deal with dangerous people on e-bikes.
00:49Statistics released on Thursday showed neighbourhood crime in London, which includes theft, robbery and
00:56burglary, fell by 14 per cent, more than 35,000 offences in the 12 months to June. The number of
01:04homicides involving a knife or sharp instrument recorded annually by police in England and Wales
01:10has also fallen to its lowest level for 35 years. The mayor, Sir Sadiq Khan, has claimed negative stories
01:17about London are amplified by Make America Great Again influencers and rival cities such as Brussels
01:23and Barcelona who want to be quote-unquote spiky about the capital.
01:29Look, there's a minority of people trying to whip up concern. Survey data across London says that 80% of
01:36Londoners support its use. The drone technology we're using, 85% of Londoners support that. This is
01:42supported. Look, we all live in a world where every business, everything we interact with is using
01:48technology more. And Londoners want police to be using technology to protect them. And that's what
01:54they're seeing us do. There's a, there are culture wars out there. And frankly, we're routinely invited
01:59to join one side or the other. We politely decline that. We get on with doing our job without fear
02:04or
02:04favour. And look, there are hostile states out there, Russia and Iran, who try and undermine stability in
02:09other countries. They are magnifying some of this content. Then there are competitor cities who want to
02:15undermine London. But London is massively safe. There's a new report published today highlighted
02:20in some of the national media that talks about the majority of people surveyed across the world
02:24see London as a safe place. They'd like to live here. It's got a great reputation regardless of those
02:30who, for their own purposes, want to undermine it. I'm troubled by leading an organisation which has had to
02:35shrink by 3,300 people in three years, particularly given the ever more challenging global context.
02:43Whatever money the politicians decide to give us, we will do our best with that. And what these results
02:47today show is the fantastic dedication and determination of our officers and how we've been
02:52able to magnify their effect with the clever use of technology to support them and the data so they
02:56can target the most dangerous people in the key locations.
