00:00Jared Verse. Hard-ass conversations. Love it.
00:04We're not talking about hitting the ground running.
00:06Love it, babe. Love it.
00:07A honeymoon period. Fans are ready. Fans are ready for this dude.
00:12Took a couple days. Took a couple days.
00:15Because I did. I had to think about it for a second, guys.
00:18Is I'm going, man, you know, this was a big hit.
00:23And I felt they don't feel that they can be competitive.
00:26That's why they made the trade. I'm like, well, Jared Verse is good.
00:28And Miles Garrett won a game.
00:30Now, I don't know how many games we're going to win
00:31just because Jared Verse walks out there on the field, right?
00:34Like, you did win the game. It's proof positive.
00:36You beat the Pittsburgh Steelers because he walked out there on the field.
00:39Miles did.
00:40I don't know how many games you're going to win just because he walks out of the field,
00:42but he certainly helps.
00:43Well, maybe my win total ain't that bad after all.
00:46I was saying seven before, I'll bump it down to six.
00:49I'll bump it down to six.
00:50It's the one game with the Pittsburgh Steelers.
00:53That gets eliminated. I'll bump her down to six.
00:56And maybe I'm still being a little bit too overzealous for everybody.
00:59Maybe I'm a little bit too much of a homer for everybody.
01:02Okay?
01:04That's us.
01:05What about what some are saying who've actually covered Mr. Verse?
01:10Well, somebody who covers the Browns yesterday texted me two and 15,
01:13and I went, okay, lose my number.
01:18I'll still talk to that person.
01:19I'm not going to tell you who it was.
01:21Guys, you guys are more than welcome to guess on social media.
01:24Yeah, somebody texted me two and 15 after practice yesterday,
01:27and I went, forget it.
01:28You're off the Christmas card list.
01:30Well, I mean, you have a really good point.
01:32I get excited about hearing Todd Munkin.
01:35I'm an easy pigeon.
01:36I get excited about hearing about Jared Verse.
01:39I'm an easy pigeon.
01:41Lima, I think you're right about it.
01:42Should we pull back expectations about Jared Verse so we don't get overwhelmingly disappointed
01:49about who is still a good player?
01:52Like, if I'm saying 10 sacks, 10 sacks is great, but we're used to 16 at a minimum.
01:57Is that wrong to be that excited?
02:00Because when people hear something like this from Greg Beecham of the Associated Press in Los Angeles
02:06with Jake Volnick last night, this is going to put a lot of pressure on our new pass rusher.
02:13I think he can be one of the five or ten best pass rushers in the NFL,
02:15just on what kind of role they want to have him in there.
02:17I think he already was one of the ten best pass rushers in the NFL,
02:20just because, like I said, the sacks don't tell you the whole story.
02:22He's constantly there.
02:23He's constantly working on his technique.
02:25He's constantly getting better and learning little things to do.
02:28You know, it'll all depend on the guys around him.
02:29You cannot just generate stuff by yourself in the NFL.
02:32And he'll have to have teammates that are doing a good job.
02:35And I think they're building a good base of a defense there.
02:37We'll know for sure in a couple of years.
02:38Coincidentally, when he'll be up for his big contract,
02:40you'll have a better picture of what he is and what he deserves to get.
02:43But I think he's absolutely going to be one of the best pass rushers in the NFL if he's not
02:46already.
02:47I mean, he's not Myles Garrett, but there is only one Myles Garrett.
02:49There's nobody else like him in our generation.
02:51You know, Aaron Donald was a completely different athlete.
02:53Aaron Donald put up great numbers.
02:54Myles Garrett is a better pure pass rusher than that.
02:56And then if you look in the second tier,
02:58Jared Burst has all the ingredients necessary to be one of the best guys in the NFL.
03:01The Browns took a downgrade as anybody would when you trade Myles Garrett.
03:04They did not take that much of a downgrade compared to what they could have in terms of this deal.
03:08See, I hear that, and I wonder by the end of the interview
03:10if Jake could have talked him into being better than Myles Garrett.
03:12Because that was some strong commentary about Jared Burst.
03:15And he did.
03:16He said these great things.
03:17Then he walks them back.
03:18And I think a lot of us are doing that.
03:20Like, you cover football.
03:23You're a radio show host.
03:24This room knew who Jared Burst was.
03:27So when you hear about Jared Burst, it's like, well, you know what?
03:29You could have done a hell of a lot worse getting him back.
03:32Getting somebody else, and you got him back.
03:34He's a great player.
03:34He's young.
03:35He's 25 years old.
03:37My whole goal turned into, and it wasn't immediate.
03:40I had to pick myself up about the Myles stuff.
03:42I'll be honest.
03:43But my reaction to it was, let's not waste his time now.
03:47Let's not, or our time with Jared Burst now, I should say.
03:51Because you're going to sign him to a contract next year, almost no matter what happens.
03:54You're going to sign him to a contract next year.
03:56Because you can't sign him now.
03:58He should be here for the next six years, you're thinking.
04:00Six seasons.
04:01We got six seasons to get this thing to not waste our time with Jared Burst.
04:06Because this guy, he seems to be the entire package of what we wanted.
04:10We wanted Myles to be more of a leader.
04:11This guy seems to be a leader.
04:13We wanted Myles to be more in tune with the locker room.
04:15That's where it is.
04:16He might give up a sack or two.
04:17But you know what?
04:18If we're better in the end, and we're more accountable in the end,
04:21we're still going to go to a better place than where we've been.
04:24And that's, I think, the Jared Burst difference here.
04:27He can't, I'm not just hiring a speech guy.
04:30You know, I'm not hiring just an orator for my football team.
04:34He's a great player.
04:35He's a great player.
04:36But I happen to agree with you, because I'm the one who's saying,
04:39when it comes to Todd, because I like this comparison here,
04:42I'm going, man, I hope the honeymoon lasts forever.
04:45I'm not ready to start the season.
04:47Because when I start the season, now I've got to start judging him.
04:50And I've got to tell you, listening to Mary Kay,
04:52and you can go back and listen to that interview on the free Odyssey app,
04:54which is brought to you by Integrated Restoration.
04:57The Rewind feature is brought to you by Integrated Restoration.
04:59You're local experts in water, fire, and storm disaster restoration.
05:02One of the questions I was going to ask Mary Kay,
05:05when she started talking about Shador Sanders starting to raise his level of play
05:11throughout, and Todd Munkin kind of hedge.
05:14I go, well, if he's throwing, because Mary Kay's, part of Mary Kay's answer was,
05:18he's throwing to lesser wide receivers and a lot of guys who aren't going to
05:22probably make the team, right?
05:24And my thought is, why didn't, he's been around football forever.
05:26Why didn't he think about that before he said those statements?
05:29And then Mary Kay's answered it before he even got the answer,
05:32the question to ask, where he's just naturally, this week,
05:36come along very strong, and that's nice.
05:39And that's part of that thought that I'm going to have to flip a switch,
05:42and so are fans, where we stop just listening to the tough talk,
05:46and you've got to put it out there on the field.
05:48And already, you notice, I'm changing expectations here with this football team
05:52with what I see on the field and how I judge this football team with Todd Munkin.
05:56Yeah, what's interesting, though, everybody does the same thing
05:58when they're talking about verse.
05:59They start out by qualifying their statement.
06:02They preface every verse statement with, now we know he's not Miles Garrett.
06:06And then they proceed to say things as if he's Miles Garrett.
06:08I even saw yesterday, Daryl put out a tweet.
06:12I couldn't even keep track of him.
06:14He was so fast, he burst out of my camera angle.
06:17And I'm like, all right, guys, we know what the best of all time is,
06:21or the best, the Browns defensive player of all time,
06:24and we know what one of the best to ever put on a uniform,
06:26what it looks like with Miles Garrett.
06:29I would not expect, you know, verse to be hitting all those markers.
06:34I would just say this, though.
06:35You don't have to.
06:36Like, this trade, I know for the very, very most basic analysis
06:43would be to gauge him against Miles Garrett straight up.
06:46That's not whether this trade is successful.
06:49Because, just to save you the time and energy,
06:51he's not going to be Miles Garrett.
06:53He's not.
06:53He's going to fall short of being Miles Garrett.
06:55Garrett, that's not whether they won this trade.
06:57And, yeah, there are ways that both teams can win this trade
07:01where he helps the Rams win the Super Bowl
07:03and the Browns use this trade to build a better team.
07:08A better team, not just a team that has Miles Garrett
07:11and a bunch of other guys that win three to four to five games every year.
07:15It's to build a better team over the long haul
07:17that has its own culture, that has its own rallying cry
07:22around a new head coach and maybe leads to a quarterback
07:24and all that stuff.
07:25That's how you gauge this trade.
07:27I don't think you have to sit there and go,
07:29oh, he got a sack.
07:30Okay, is he on pace for more sacks than Miles Garrett?
07:32No, because they didn't just trade him.
07:35Well, you're going to have to keep saying that
07:35because a lot of people are going to do that.
07:37But that's not the trade.
07:38The trade isn't Miles Garrett for Jared Verse.
07:40They would never make that trade.
07:41No.
07:41The trade is for a new beginning.
07:44It's for so much more than just Miles Garrett.
07:47And I know, immediately, everybody crushed a trade.
07:50And you're right.
07:50Three days later, I'm seeing so many Browns fans
07:53that are like, actually, maybe.
07:56And a bunch of the analytics people,
07:58and I know we've gone in on that earlier in the show.
08:00They always tell you good news, so you've got to go find it.
08:02They are loving this trade.
08:03And it probably, you were going to get a return back.
08:07I think a lot of us just thought it was going to be for picks.
08:09And that's all it was going to be.
08:10That's why I do think that some of the guys have been a little bit quieter
08:13on some of the stuff on social media.
08:15Like, yeah, I'm sure they're guys.
08:16They're friendly with Miles Garrett.
08:18They may like Miles Garrett.
08:19Miles Garrett is not the heart and soul of this football team.
08:21I'm sorry.
08:22That's a lie that we have been trying to get to be the truth
08:26for such a long time.
08:27Nor do I even think he ever wanted to be.
08:29But I also know that there's teammates in there.
08:31They can't be sitting there falling over themselves
08:33with the loss of Miles Garrett
08:34because you've got another teammate coming in,
08:35and you've got to be welcoming to him.
08:36And I think Carson Swessinger has played this well.
08:38I think Alex Wright has played this well.
08:40I really do.
08:40I know what Keith noticed before, and I think Keith has a point,
08:43but I think they've done this the right way.
08:45But with Jared Verse, I think that expectations thing
08:47that you bring up, I think that that is the right thing
08:50because already, to make ourselves feel better,
08:52we're putting the side-by-side of them at their ages
08:55of where they're at statistically.
08:57And so you can't tell me that people aren't going to be
08:59sitting there watching going,
09:00if Jared Verse starts off the first month of the season
09:03with the first four games, and he has seven sacks,
09:06and somehow seven sacks is quite a lot.
09:09If he has four sacks in four games,
09:11and Miles Garrett only has three sacks some way, somehow,
09:14you know damn well there's going to be a lot of champions
09:17posing going on.
09:17Well, that would be fun.
09:18And that would be fun.
09:19I'll sit here and go, oh, boy.
09:22But you've got to take the good with the bad here
09:24because you did just say we can't be making dollars
09:27to donuts comparisons over here.
09:29And, you know, the other part of this is, too,
09:31like, you know, Miles at some point is going to slow down.
09:34I don't know when that is because it sure as hell
09:35wasn't last year.
09:36But at some point, you know, you've got to factor that in, too.
09:39Like, even if you hated this trade,
09:42there has to be some expectation that Miles
09:44is not always going to be Miles.
09:46The question is, when is that?
09:47Is that part of the Browns thinking, too?
09:50That where is Miles going to be two years from now?
09:52Where is he going to be four years from now?
09:54Was Miles also going to hit us up for a new contract?
09:57Were we also going to have to make him
09:58the highest paid non-quarterback?
10:00Were we going to have to pay him as much
10:01as some of the starting quarterbacks in the league?
10:03What sense does that make on a rebuilding roster?
10:05It doesn't.
10:06And now you're looking at probably
10:10you're looking at a $100 million contract
10:11next year with Jared Verse, which, again,
10:14if you're looking at 10-plus sacks, I'm hoping 10.
10:17I'd like to lay that as the platform with this defense
10:20if I'm looking at 10-plus sacks.
10:22Now, maybe that'll change,
10:23depending on what other moves they make.
10:24Let's be serious here.
10:26But if you have that, then I think that I got no problem
10:29in looking at him as part of this future.
10:31Because, again, he's been in two seasons
10:33in his NFL career.
10:34He's already played more playoff games than Miles.
10:38So we know what the more...
10:39He's a very important piece,
10:41but we know what the more important piece really is.
10:43And hopefully we can finally get this thing going
10:46in a respectable direction,
10:47because it did alarm me where our whole world
10:51revolved around Miles Garrett.
10:54But when Miles Simmons is on with us
10:56from Pro Football Talk yesterday and said he...
10:59Because he lives in Los Angeles.
11:00He's getting texts from people saying about Miles Garrett
11:03they didn't know.
11:04You're telling me Bill Simmons could not pick
11:06Miles Garrett out of a lineup?
11:07That's what Bill Simmons said?
11:08That's what he was saying.
11:09That's how some people have talked about
11:12his lack of star power for somebody
11:14who is as good as he is.
11:16It's this simple.
11:16You've got to have the QB for everybody else
11:19to get noticed.
11:20They've had the QB in Los Angeles.
11:22Aaron Donald, you could pick Aaron Donald
11:24out of any lineup.
11:25You could describe Aaron Donald in your sleep.
11:27Is it the same thing if Aaron Donald
11:29played in a lot of other cities
11:30that were looking for quarterbacks?
11:31Probably not.
11:32Probably not.
11:33Probably he's a football guy's favorite player.
11:35Just like Miles is.
11:36So now that Jared Verse
11:37is one of the football guy's favorite player
11:39and more people do know about him
11:41because he does play in LA with a good quarterback.
11:43Here he did.
11:44Now you've got to go find your guy.
11:45So I think your reaction to this
11:49is responsible.
11:50And that's what I'm going to try to be all year.
