00:00How I like to define it, it's like the made in Italy at its finest.
00:04With cymbals, you interfere with one voice, we have two voices, so I try to be as dry as I
00:10can.
00:36Hello guys, Richard here from Lacuna Coil, we are in Chicago today and we are doing our
00:41US tour to promote the new album Sleepless Empire and welcome to my world!
00:46Yeah, so my kit is basically a DS drum, which is an artisan brand from Italy and how I like
00:53to define it, it's like the made in Italy at its finest. And this is a RCS kit, it's all
01:01made in birch
01:02and it's of course artisan super premium quality. Yeah, and basically I have pretty standard sizes.
01:10I have a 14 inch snare, 12 inch tom, 14 inch floor, 16 inch floor and 22 kick. Super standard
01:19and it's
01:20all made in birch, except for the snare, which is a steel snare. I love it because of the good
01:26harmonics, good and well controlled harmonics. Yeah, about the tuning, we are using a kind of low
01:33tuning because first I like it, second my drum tech likes it and third the sound engineer likes it. I
01:40try to, you know, to do what is best for the music, for the mix and for the front of
01:45house. So it's quite low,
01:48not too much, it's quite dampened here because I love the harmonics of the snare, but I want that to
01:53be even more controlled. So I'm using, for this purpose, an HD Dry from Evans, which is, as the name
02:02says, a super dry drum head, but also I want it even more dry and more punchy and that's what
02:09Fede,
02:09our sound engineer, tried to achieve night by night. About the rest of the drum heads, we are using
02:15EG2S by Evans all over the tone and we are now using the EQ3 for the kick drum. We used
02:24the AMAD before,
02:25but I found it to be a little too dampened and now I want it to be a little more
02:30boomy for the kick
02:32because so all my microphones can catch the full low end range and then I can give the kick with
02:40the
02:40trigger that I'm using. So yeah, basically my kick sound is a combination of three microphones,
02:46kick in, kick out and kick trigger just for the edge. For the resonant heads, I'm using super standard
02:52resonant heads. Nothing too crazy is the Reso from Evans, they just work, it's perfect. Also for the
03:00snare, I use a very thin one because the snare wire will react better. We use a lot of snare
03:07wire in the mix,
03:08so I want a resonant heads that will work perfectly for this purpose. And about the sound, yeah,
03:17I have, as I said, a very kind of dampened and low tuned sound, which is the snare.
03:23You can see a lot of snare wire in it. Tom.
03:30And the kick.
03:33I love it, super punchy. And about the cymbals, I am endorsed by Sebian cymbals. I'm using a combination
03:41between AIX and HHX cymbals, starting from an AIX Ozone Splash 10 inches, XSR Ozone, I love it, this is
03:51super super dry and zero washy. And then I'm using the Complex Steam Crash 17 inches and 18 inches on
04:01the
04:01right. And as my main crash, I have an explosion crash by AIX, 19 inches. My all-time favorite,
04:09Holy China. This is the breakdown maker. And a mini China 14 inch from AIX. And this super cool stack,
04:19it's called the Sizzler from XSR. And a Terribozio or Radia Bell, that it's been used just for some
04:26little accents here and there. And about my choice of the cymbal, it is something that I don't want to,
04:32you know, make compromise between the cymbals and the two vocals that we have in the band. Because,
04:38you know, with cymbals, you interfere with one voice, we have two voices. So I try to be as dry
04:44as I can,
04:44less, less washy and super controlled. And this sample, this set of cymbals is just perfect for this.
04:52Drumsticks, I'm using Promark. It's the ATAK 747B. It is a combination between 5A, 5B, a little longer.
05:03It has like a, I think a half of an inch more than the regular size of the drumstick. They
05:09are pretty well
05:10balanced. So yeah, nothing too crazy. But uh, you know, 5A were too thin, 5B were too big,
05:17I tried to go in between. Yeah, about the hardware, I'm using the Tama Speed Cobra,
05:22is my all-time favorite pedal. And then I'm using this super... Oh, I'm using the DW Hi-Hat Stand.
05:32Uh, about the rack, I'm using this beautiful, beautiful Yamaha drums rack that I've built together
05:39with my Drumtech Alex. And uh, it's super solid and it allows me to, you know, do crazy things with
05:45the
05:46stands and also this kind of super, super cool, uh, you know, shape for the overhead microphones.
05:53And uh, I love it. It's super, super metal. And uh, about the microphones, I also, I'm also endorsed by
06:00microphones. I'm using, uh, Audix mics all over the kit. Pretty, pretty standard thing. D2, D4, uh, D6,
06:10then I have an ADX 60 for the kick-in, E5, snare top and bottom, and the classic overhead. And
06:19uh, the
06:20spot for the cymbals. And uh, yeah, this is sort of my monitor world that I have. It's pretty simple,
06:28simple. I'm using this LP 16 from Cinematic Audio to send the sequences and the backing tracks. This is
06:36discontinued, but it's a super strong machine. I don't want it to break, ever. And uh, I'm using this
06:43little mixer by Mackie. Basically what I hear during the set, it is the mp3 of the song, which is,
06:51you know, it's strange, but uh, I'm the drummer. I need to, you know, stay on time and I don't
06:58want
06:59anything, you know, to, let's say, fuck up during the show. So even if I get lost, which rarely happens,
07:05uh, I, I know exactly where I am. I'm just, you know, guiding the band and they, has to be
07:10sure that
07:11everything is, it's done. And I have, uh, yeah, the mix in my ear. I have the click and I
07:17have the
07:18trigger of my drum kick and that's it. Then I hear the rest of the drum kit from here because
07:26this baby has a lot of volume, like a lot. And down here we have the Roland TM6 for the,
07:34it's a trigger module. Basically we are using just the kick drum for the trigger,
07:39but, uh, maybe, maybe one day I will try to add some snare sample. I'm trying, you know,
07:46thinking about it. We'll see if we need it. For the in-ears we are using the Shure 450,
07:53450, yeah, standard, super standard in-ears. I don't need, you know, I don't have the full mix of the
08:02band,
08:02uh, so I just need volume, some isolation and those are perfect. Plus I used to wash my hair a
08:10lot during
08:10the set and they are, you know, waterproof, super resistant, so I love it. And, uh, the drum chair,
08:17it's a DW, drum chair. Nothing too crazy, it's just comfortable. I spent, like, an afternoon in a
08:26drum shop and sit down in every, uh, on every chair and found the perfect for me. So, basically,
08:32this is my word. I love playing this kid. Thank you for staying with me in this video and, uh,
08:39yeah,
08:39come check out the band around the US, maybe in the festivals in Europe. We are promoting
08:45Sleepless Empire, our latest record. I love it, it's super metal, super heavy,
08:49so if you want to see some cool drum action, please come over.
09:20Sleepless Empire, our latest record.
