00:00Every sound guy is always just like, I want the Jordison, I want the Jordison.
00:03I've actually had this skin on for almost a year and a half.
00:06Recorded an album with it and toured it and just, you know, takes a lick and keeps on kicking.
00:1035 shows and I broke one stick.
00:39Hey there, it's Phil from The Birthday Massacre.
00:42We're out on the Dark Winter Tour, co-headlining with Lord of the Lost from Germany and support
00:48from Wednesday 13.
00:49We're currently playing Chicago tonight, I think it's show 9.
00:54We've got about 5 or 6 more, then we're headlining our way back up to Canada.
00:58The tour's been great so far.
01:00You know, it's winter so you're going to get some, you know, bad weather along the way.
01:05Let's say we've had to, you know, move a couple shows and stuff.
01:07Everything's been good other than that and we're happy to be out here.
01:09This is a dark, transparent, black D-Drum kit, Dominion Series, Birch.
01:16I've got a sponsorship with D-Drum the last couple of years.
01:19We've recorded our last two records on this kit, both Fascinations and Pathways,
01:25which is the album we're currently out touring right now.
01:27So, 12-inch, 13-inch rat toms, 16-inch floor tom, and we have a 22-inch kick drum.
01:35For the snare, I actually have used this for about a decade now.
01:38It's the Joey Jordison Signature Pearl Snare.
01:43Had that for a lot of years and brought a bunch of different snares on tour
01:47and every sound guy is always just like, I want the Jordison, I want the Jordison.
01:50So, that's kind of been the one staple we've used for that.
01:52So, the Joey Jordison Snare is 13-inch, which is a little bit different than most snares,
01:58which are typically 14.
02:00For the heads, we have Evans G2 coated.
02:03I have a couple moon gels on there.
02:06And for the kick drum, we have EMAD, which is a phenomenal, phenomenal skin.
02:12And I've actually had this skin on for almost a year and a half, recorded an album with it
02:17and toured it and just, you know, takes a lick and it keeps on kicking.
02:21I'm not, like, super particular about, like, you know, what brands and stuff like that,
02:26you know, but Evans has been kind of cool the last couple tours.
02:29I did use Remo for a while, but I find the thing with the Birthday Massacre sound,
02:34when we record, there's not only acoustic drums, but it's blended in with electronic drums.
02:39So, I find, you know, these skins are a little bit thudier and they kind of meet,
02:42you know, more of what's happening on the record.
02:45And then on the snare drum, we have a Genera Dry skin.
02:51And that's kind of a, this one I just put on yesterday because I snapped one in soundcheck.
02:57We're only going to do one song in soundcheck.
02:59We're like, no, let's do another one.
03:00Thankfully, we did because about five seconds in, that one broke.
03:03So, this one's been in my case for a while.
03:05And I don't really change my skins a ton.
03:09You know, they start sounding terrible.
03:11I'm going to do a shout out to Mike, who is a phenomenal drummer on Wednesday 13.
03:17And yesterday, we had a tight stage in, where were we, Mike?
03:20Detroit?
03:20Oh, that was Detroit.
03:21So, we had to do a kit share.
03:22And so, Mike played on my kit.
03:24There just wasn't room for three kits, as we see here.
03:27So, I go to Mike, I'm like, tune him up.
03:29And he did a phenomenal job.
03:30So, I will admit that's never been my strength, you know, the last 30 years, is tuning, you know.
03:36But anyway, so that's it on there.
03:38So, I've been playing Sabian exclusively for about 28 years.
03:43It's a Canadian company.
03:45It's just, I don't know, it's a sound I love.
03:47I'm basically doing mainly all AAX.
03:50I have 14-inch AAX stage hats.
03:53We have a 12, or sorry, 11-inch AAX explosion splash.
03:5916-inch medium crash AAX.
04:02We have an 18-inch AAX explosion crash.
04:07We have, I've had this symbol for probably 20 years.
04:10This is an AAX metal ride, 20 inches.
04:14And I don't even want to even make that anymore.
04:16I've had that forever.
04:17This is kind of just a dirty stack.
04:19This is an old, I think, 18-inch Holy China by Saban that got cracked.
04:23And under it, I have an 18-inch explosion crash.
04:27And it's just kind of a little bit more percussive sounding.
04:29And then this one was a new one I got for the last series.
04:33Yeah, Stratus 18-inch.
04:35Yeah, so that's pretty much it for the cymbals.
04:38Oh, one more.
04:38I forgot.
04:39So, this is kind of a random one.
04:40This is a 7-inch Radia by Terry Bosio.
04:44Phenomenal drummer.
04:45And, yeah, he's got a whole line of those.
04:47I don't think they make them anymore.
04:48But I've had this for probably 20, 25 years, too.
04:51So, it's just, you know, kicking around in the cymbal bag.
04:53Just pull her out, you know.
04:54Sticks and Musings.
04:55I have an endorsement from an amazing Canadian company called Los Cabos.
05:00Out in Eastern Canada, New Brunswick.
05:03I was lucky to visit the facilities this year on tour.
05:06And, you know, number one, being Canadian, I like, you know, supporting Canada.
05:09It's a home-run business.
05:12We talk hockey, me and Phil, the main guy there.
05:14So, you know, and it's just, I love the sticks, number one.
05:18Like, the durability with these red hickories are unbelievable.
05:21I did a European tour a couple years ago, 35 shows, and I broke one stick.
05:27So, like, you know, it's pretty durable.
05:30Sometimes I use 7-A's depending on the venue.
05:32I bring both on tour.
05:33I find some of the smaller stages, so I'm not getting a lot of cymbal bleed in Chibi's ears or
05:38in-ears.
05:39I use the 7-A's.
05:41But usually I'll do the 5-A's, which are a little bit heavier.
05:44And both are usually the red hickory, which are a bit of a heavier wood, too.
05:47In terms of the hardware, it's kind of a mixed bag.
05:50Before I got my e-drum endorsement, I had Tamastar Classics for about 25 years.
05:55So these boom arms are from Tama.
05:57I think mainly all my cymbal stands are Yamaha, which I find they just, you know,
06:03fold up nicely and fit in the hardware bags, and they're fairly durable for the price point.
06:08I'm using a Pearl hi-hat stand.
06:12And then, you know, the most important thing I would say on the kit would be the double pedal.
06:16This one is a very, very old one.
06:18I've had probably about 12 years.
06:20Speed Cobra.
06:20And if you notice, the one thing about it, the beaters are different.
06:23I had a session in Toronto, and the engineer was saying, like,
06:28you can get a bit more attack on the beaters.
06:29So I've switched, and I've just used these power shifter beaters by Pearl for the last,
06:34you know, 10 years or so.
06:35So in terms of the throne, we have a lovely Mapex throne.
06:40And I actually just got this mixer by Art recently a couple tours ago.
06:45And in terms of my in-ears, I'm using just pretty standard SE215s, nothing too crazy.
06:53Yeah, that's it for that side of things.
06:56But yeah, we'll be running it all through Pro Tools, our sets.
06:59So one side is my tracks, one side is my click.
07:02And yeah.
07:03Once again, thanks for hanging out.
07:04Phil from The Birthday Massacre, we're out on the Dark Winter Tour,
07:08playing in Chicago tonight, co-headlining with Lord of the Lost,
07:12and support from the amazing Wednesday 13.
07:15We have about another six or seven shows,
07:17and then we're headlining our way back to Canada.
07:19And we're supporting our newest record, which came out last year, Pathways.
07:23If you want to check it out, it's on all streaming platforms.
07:27And if you want to check out more on the band, thebirthdaymasacre.com.
07:30And of course, we're on Instagram and Facebook.
07:33And yeah.
07:33Thanks for watching.
07:34Cheers.
08:03Cheers.
08:05Cheers.
08:06Cheers.
08:08Cheers.
