00:51Hello and welcome to From the South, I'm Lorena Fon from the Telesur Studios in Caracas, Venezuela.
00:56We begin with the news.
01:12We begin with the information. The government of Cuba stated that the business administration group known as Giza has helped
01:20the Caribbean island cope with the economic blockade imposed by the United States of America.
01:25The revolutionary government of Cuba has taken legitimate action against the blockade asserting that Giza is not a heightened entity
01:32but rather an efficient system created during this special period to resist economic pressures from Washington and placed under the
01:40control of the Cuban state.
01:41The Cuban government denounced the United States' secondary sanctions as a disproportional campaign to strangle the national economy and discredit
01:50the Cuban revolution.
01:51It also highlighted the social impact of the business administration group's financial resources, allocated the country's development and maintenance.
02:07Cuban's President Miguel Díaz-Canel stated that the business administration group has enabled to the island to withstand the United
02:15States aggression via social media.
02:17The Cuban president explained, the Cuban president explained, the guy is not the work of secrets or elites and certainly
02:23not a path to enrichment for a few.
02:26On the contrary, it is one of the many examples that throughout our journey has enabled us to resist that
02:33constant aggression of the United States government.
02:36Its history was built, expressed by the leader of the Revolution Army General Raul Castro Ruz, without the slightest desire
02:44for the limelight for that is how important things are done.
02:57Also, the revolutionary government of Cuba asserts that the business administration group is not a parallel structure to the Cuban
03:04state.
03:04On the contrary, it has proven highly affected in the face of the economy blockade imposed by the United States.
03:11In a statement, the revolutionary government of Cuba stated that the government of the United States has once again acted
03:18with premeditated intention in its eagerness to fabricate pretexts to discredit the Cuban revolution, its history leadership, its leaders and
03:27thus confuse both our people and international public opinion.
03:31The text also stated, the most recent sanctions against Cuba announced on May 1st are part of that plan.
03:39Executive Orders 1-14-404 targets the business administration groups, this time in conjunction with the so-called secondary sanctions
03:49targeting any foreign entity conducting transactions of any kind with this group with an emphasis on a pressure against financial
03:58institutions.
03:59The document also stated that the business administration group is not the product of secrecy nor of elites and certainly
04:07not a means for a few to enrich themselves.
04:11On the contrary, it is one of the many examples that along our journey has enabled us to resist the
04:17constant aggression of the United States government.
04:20Its history was built in the words of the leader of the Cuban Revolution Army General, Raul Castro Ruz, without
04:28the slightest desire for the limelight as is the way with serious matters.
04:48In our information in Colombia, Alliance for Life candidate Iván Cepeda and far-right candidate Abelardo de la Espriella have
04:55advanced to the presidential runoff.
04:57With all voting tables counted, Abelardo de la Espriella of the far-right defenders of the homeless movement secured 43
05:04.7% of the vote followed by Iván Cepeda of the Alliance for Life with 40.9%.
05:11The two candidates will face off in a runoff election on June 29, voting preceded normally across the country with
05:18strong participation from Colombia voters both at home and abroad.
05:23The far-right is seeking a return to power while the progressive movement aims to consolidate the changes initiated by
05:29Gustavo Petro.
05:37The campaign in Colombia has begun spontaneously launched by thousands of young people who took to the streets this Monday
05:44night in support of the Project for Change.
05:47In cities such as Bogota, the country's capital, and in Tunisia, in the Department of Boyacá were long marches filled
05:55with chance for support for the progressive candidate.
05:58Also in several cities across the country, protesters were held led by young people who affirmed that they will take
06:04on a more active role in this campaign in defense of the right they have won.
06:18In Argentina, universities have fallen in global rankings due to budget cuts by Javier Millet's government.
06:25The report attributes the drop in surge performance to the reduction in resources allocated to science and technology.
06:32Furthermore, the cuts make it difficult to sustain vital projects, invest in equipment, upgrade laboratories, and retain skilled professionals.
06:41In addition, the educational community denounces that President Javier Millet is implementing authority policies that are destroying the public, free
06:50and high-quality higher education system achieved by the Argentinian people.
07:01In Guatemala, city residents blocked three main roads in the village of Santa Elena Barillas in protest over an increase
07:09in public transportation fares.
07:11The municipal traffic policy of Villa Canales reported the burning of tires on the roadway, an action that has affected
07:19thousands of commuters who are unable to travel due to the lack of transportation in the area.
07:25For her part, the spokesperson for that agency, Irma Orantes, explained that the protesters have remained on the roads since
07:33early morning and added that they are awaiting the opportunity to establish a dialogue with the relevant authorities.
07:39So far, the reasons why transport operators increased the fare have not been made in public.
07:45In this regard, the groups participating in the protests argued that the new fares are excessively high and disproportionate.
08:11And now we have a show break coming up. We'll be right back. Stay with us.
08:34Welcome back to From the South. We continue with more information.
08:37We will be right back.
08:42For the fourth consecutive week, pressures from various social labourers and pharma groups has escalated as they demand the resignation
08:54of president Rodrigo Paz.
08:55The protesters claim that this administration has been unable to address their demands, having failed to provide concrete solutions to
09:03social issues.
09:04In recent days, popular protests have spread across various regions of Colombia, demonstrating the population's rejection of Rodrigo Paz's neoliberal
09:14policies after just seven months in office.
09:25In this context, Cochabamba became the department with the highest number of roadblocks in the country, with more than 30
09:32roads blocked.
09:33The scale of the roadblocks exacerbates Cochabamba isolation on the 16th day of conflict in this department, which has become
09:41the main epicenter of protests against Rodrigo Paz.
09:59On Monday, in El Salvador de Farabundo, Martí National Liberation Fund presented its assessment of President Nayib Bukele, seven years
10:08in office, and outlined a series of challenges that, according to the party, the country is currently facing.
10:14During a press conference, FMLN Secretary General Manuel Chino Flores raised concern about economic growth, debt, and the situation in
10:24sectors such as agriculture, health, and education.
10:28He also mentioned the rising cost of living as one of the population's main concern on the issue of security.
10:35He acknowledged progress in reducing crime and a greater sense of safety, although he considered that challenges remain in preventing
10:43violence and combating corruption.
10:45The leader affirmed that the FMLN will continue to exercise responsible opposition and reiterated its willingness to support initiatives aimed
10:54at institutional strengthening and transparency.
11:05In Chile, far-right President José Antonio Castro, who has ties to Pinochetism, delivered his first aid of the nation
11:12address to Congress, less than 90 days after taking office.
11:15While the President delivered his address, social-political T-shirt, and a senior organization protested in Valparaíso.
11:23Demonstrators requested authorization to march, but the government denied and responded with arrest.
11:29In his speech, caste promised not to eliminate social benefits to all the spending cuts already announced are expected to
11:37severely impact public health care and education.
11:40In this context, new demonstrators are expected in Santiago.
11:50Today, multiple health, education, and civil society organizations went out to protest against the cuts announced by caste that go
11:58against the functioning of our hospitals, our schools, and acquired rights that today they want to take away from us.
12:09First of all, he lied to the country, and to the people who voted for him.
12:13He did it through the media, and then tried to call it a metaphor.
12:17What he is doing is very crude presenting a lie as a metaphor, when in fact he deceived the people
12:23who believed in him, and expected real change.
12:26It turns out that change has not come.
12:31Human rights organizations and political figures are denouncing the deteriorating health of former Ecuadorian Vice President Jorge Glass, who has
12:39been in prison since 2024.
12:42The error was issued after the Soscarceles Ecuador account reported receiving information from the police about the former official, who
12:51is currently jailed in a maximum security prison in Santa Elena.
12:54Glass' legal team stated that the former Ecuadorian Vice President had been unconscious in his cell for several hours.
13:02His current condition is unknown, and no official authority has confirmed or denied the information.
13:09The new alerts come nearly two months after a judge rejected an obvious corpus petition filled with Glass' defense team
13:17arguing that his life was at risk in the prison.
13:40In the heart of Beijing, next to Tiananmen Square, stands the Great Hall of the People, the seat of China's
13:52National People's Congress.
13:53There, Brazilian Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira was received at the start of his three-day official visit to China.
14:02During the meeting, Chinese Vice President Han Zeng highlighted the growing rapprochement between Brazil and China,
14:09and the need to strengthen strategic coordination as well as economic and trade cooperation between both countries.
14:22We are ready to implement the important consensus we have reached.
14:25I know that one of the key tasks of your visit to China is to hold its fifth global strategic
14:29dialogue between the foreign ministries of both countries.
14:32I believe this visit will play a significant role in helping our countries strengthen their strategic relations in the new
14:38international circumstances
14:39and thus promote positive momentum in the development of bilateral relations.
14:46The May meeting took place at the Dayutai State Complex in Beijing, one of the official venues used by the
14:53Chinese government for high-level diplomatic meetings,
14:57where the foreign ministers of Brazil and China held the fifth edition of the Global Strategic Dialogue.
15:04Vieira emphasizes the importance of the mechanism in deepening bilateral cooperation.
15:13All partnership elevated in 2024 to the Brazil-China community with a shared future for amorous war and a more
15:21sustainable planet
15:22is more relevant than ever amid current international turbulence.
15:27The Sino-Brazilian relationship is an example of stability and repredictability.
15:36The main objective of the meeting was coordination between Brasília and Beijing on issues such as reform of global governance,
15:44strengthening the global south and defending multilateralism, as highlighted by Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi.
15:54China and Brazil have demonstrated responsibility in defending the interests of the global south and multilateralism.
16:00I hope our strategic dialogue today will further deepen cooperation between both sides,
16:05contribute the modernization of our countries and strengthen peace and development in the global south.
16:13During the meetings, Vieira invited Chinese officials to visit Brazil this year
16:18to take part in the eighth Sino-Brazilian high-level Commission for Consultation and Cooperation, the COSBAN,
16:26with the aim of following up and further deepening bilateral relations.
16:32No Falsi, Beijing, China, for Telesur.
16:37Fine, I should break, but we'll be back with more from the south.
16:40Don't go away.
17:00Welcome back to From the South.
17:02Russia carried out a large-scale overnight attack on Ukrainian defense industry facilities
17:07and military infrastructure in response to previous attacks by Ukraine.
17:11According to the Ministry of Defense, its forces used long-range precision weapons launched from the air, land and sea,
17:19including hypersonic air, launched missiles and attack drones against military targets in Kiev,
17:26Zaporizhia, Kharkiv and Dnipro-Trovec, as well as in Poltavia, Luhansk.
17:33In some regions, also attack fuel and transportation infrastructure used to support the Ukrainian armed forces and military airfields.
17:43On its part, Ukrainian authorities confirmed damage in seven of the ten districts of Kiev, the country's capital.
18:12All these five people have been killed in Israeli attacks in southern Lebanon hours after United States President Donald Trump
18:19announced an agreement to de-escalate fighting that neither Israel for the Lebanese group, Hezbollah, has publicly accepted.
18:27The attacks came hours after Trump said he had held separate phone calls with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and
18:36Hezbollah leaders.
18:37The development followed a dramatic escalation in violence that saw Israeli troops stage their deepest incursion into Lebanon in more
18:45than two decades,
18:46conducting waves of heavy bombardments and threatening to attack the Beirut suburbs.
18:51According to the Lebanon Ministry of Public Health, Israeli attacks since March 2 have killed at least 3,433 people
18:59in Lebanon.
19:07At the United Nations Security Council, China called on Israel to cease its aggression and expansion its policies against Lebanese
19:15territory.
19:16Chinese representative Foucault warned of the risk of escalating Israeli military operations and its plan to expand into southern Lebanon.
19:24He emphasized that the expansion raises serious international concerns and requires immediate action against these actions.
19:32Furthermore, the official urged Tel Aviv to comply with international resolutions and respect Lebanese sovereignty in order to preserve regional
19:41peace.
19:50Israel carries out arbitrary mass arrests in part of the occupied West Bank with more than 40 people detained so
19:58far.
19:58Israeli military forces intensified and housed raids in multiple governorates of the West Bank as part of the Zionist regime's
20:06ongoing aggression against the Palestinian people.
20:09Likewise, raids on various homes led to the arrest of at least 13 people in the city of Turkarm and
20:17another 10 in the village of Zahra and Beita.
20:20These arrests were carried out arbitrarily affecting the civilian population including Palestinian citizens who had recently been released from peace
20:29prison.
20:36Israeli media reports that the national government is facing a political crisis triggered by military setbacks on various war fronts.
20:44According to NLE's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is in a political stalemate facing pressure from the United States and public
20:53outrage over the presence of soldiers in Lebanon.
20:56The media warns that Israel is marred in chaos where various socials and religious groups set their own rules combined
21:04with decisions from Washington that weigh heavily from abroad.
21:08At the same time, the war launched against Lebanese territory is causing numerous military casualties, making the burden unsustainable among
21:16the combatants.
21:24Europe is experiencing rising in inflation, driving primarily by higher costs for energy, utilities and food as a result of
21:33the United States' war against Iran.
21:35These changes in inflation rates vary depending on the country and its ability to respond to these economic challenges,
21:42while Germany has managed to bring its inflation rate down to 2.7% in Greece and Lithuania.
21:49The situation is critical with inflation rates exceeding 5%.
21:54This figure hits citizens' pockets hard as they lose more and more of their income, of their person's power, every
22:04day to meet basic needs.
22:06This highlights the consequences of a war launched against Iran and Europe's dependence on fuel from Middle East.
22:19And like this, we have come to the end of this news brief.
22:21For television in English, I'm Rana Fong. Thank you for watching.
