00:00Good morning.
00:01Good morning.
00:03Kuomintang Chair Zhengli Wen arrives at Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C.
00:07She says that it's here that she met with nine U.S. members of Congress,
00:11among them Republican lawmakers Dan Sullivan, Don Bacon, and Young Kim.
00:16Sullivan sits on the Senate Armed Services Committee,
00:19and Kim is on the House Foreign Affairs Committee,
00:22both very important to Taiwan-U.S. ties.
00:26We're going to come to the House Foreign Affairs Committee,
00:29because the time is very limited,
00:31but we're very grateful that the members of the military committee
00:34and the military committee can meet us
00:36and express their support and concern for Taiwan.
00:39Zheng spent most of her time on Capitol Hill on Thursday speaking with Sullivan,
00:44someone who previously said Zheng was playing with fire
00:47and kowtowing to the Chinese Communist Party
00:50by meeting Chinese President Xi Jinping in April,
00:53while her party continued to stall a special defense budget
00:56that would help Taiwan purchase more weapons.
00:59Zheng has said she aims to foster peace,
01:02saying her party can help repair Taiwan's ties with China
01:05and foster international peace by taking Taiwan
01:08out of the U.S.-China rivalry equation.
01:10But across the aisle, the ruling Democratic Progressive Party
01:14isn't sold on Zheng's mission.
01:15The party's representative in Washington says
01:18that Zheng is misleading the American public.
01:20Her words betray herself.
01:22Her party's obstructionist behavior will be held accountable.
01:27The question is, you know, obvious.
01:31How does she support investing in Taiwan's defense and resilience?
01:35And is the KMT's position meaningfully different from Beijing's?
01:40But even as some question Zheng's intentions in D.C.,
01:43hundreds are showing up in support of her trip.
01:55But even at this banquet in Maryland,
01:57protesters skeptical of her plans are not letting her off the hook.
02:01Now that Zheng Liwen is wrapping her time up here in the U.S. Capitol,
02:04she's going to head to Los Angeles for the final leg of her trip
02:07before heading back to Taiwan.
