00:00Hey, it's Team Masterpiece right here on 105.3 The Fan.
00:04It is time for your Dallas Cowboys news of the day after a no-doubt,
00:09just arduous day of pajama camp yesterday for the Dallas Cowboys.
00:16That is Dan Campbell's phrase.
00:18We'll talk more about that in just a little bit.
00:22No George Pickens at the voluntary OTAs yesterday,
00:28which I know is shocking because they're so important.
00:32And so how could you possibly survive without?
00:35There is nobody in DFW, maybe even the planet or the universe or the other places too,
00:43that cares about the OTAs the way Kevin does.
00:46Every single day he comes into our pre-show meeting and sits down
00:51and he's like, got all these news things about OTAs.
00:53And I'm like, Kevin, really?
00:55And he's like, you know what?
00:56You're right, Corey.
00:57Corey, I'll take it easy on the OTA stuff whenever we get on air.
01:01That's why we waited a whole hour to get to pajama camp.
01:05It's, again, this is specifically for getting the installation started.
01:11Sure.
01:12Making sure, like there's, when you have a team,
01:14I was thinking about this the other day, actually maybe on the drive-in this morning.
01:18How do you get your offensive installation set up when one of your best players is not there?
01:22You install somebody else for the time being.
01:25Defensively, for this, the defense is the most important part.
01:28But if you want this offense to evolve, you kind of have to have that guy there, right?
01:33Yeah.
01:34And does, I guess, I'm going to get to him in just a minute.
01:36Okay.
01:37I'm going to get to him in just because I have a question there that I might be a little
01:41concerned.
01:42Oh.
01:43Whenever you get these guys there, there's no, I'm not sure how you put them through tough tests
01:52to start to build that unity at this point.
01:56It's like speeches, right?
01:58You're giving speeches and hoping it connects with these guys in some way.
02:01But the only real way to get that true we are a team kind of thing
02:06is to go through some tough stuff in the season
02:09and realize what you've overcome along the way
02:12and the work that you put into it actually was like a reason for the success.
02:17Right now, this is the monotony stuff, the minutiae that you've got to get to
02:22to get to the fun things.
02:24And that's just part of what OTAs are.
02:26Now, that being said, with your wide receiver, this is part one.
02:31With Pickens not being there, is this just the first phase of him not showing up to things?
02:37And I think that's the big concern.
02:39But we were so concerned with him not signing the franchise tag
02:44because of what we went through with Micah.
02:46We were just scarred from it.
02:48And we were like, it's going to happen again.
02:51It's a Molageta guy.
02:52And it's going to happen.
02:54He's already signed it.
02:55So not showing up to things, that's going to be a bad thing for him mostly.
03:01Yeah.
03:01So I go back and forth on this because I totally get your point.
03:06On the one hand, you go above and beyond to show your value to the team.
03:14And that's what Jerry wants.
03:15Yeah, exactly.
03:16Jerry wants you to be the guy that's going to do stuff that you're not paid for.
03:20But on the flip side, I'm sure George Pickens is like,
03:23look, I gave you an outstanding offensive season last year on a cheaper contract,
03:31and I think I should be rewarded accordingly.
03:33I guess my one thought would have been, and I totally understand his idea of not being out there already.
03:39My one thought would have been, if you were offered the open market to go out and see what you
03:44could find
03:44and what you could learn and what you got back was mostly people being like, nah, I'm good.
03:49Then I would have thought I would have pushed in the other direction and been like,
03:52I'll show every single one of you MFers that I am awesome and worth every single penny possible.
03:59But at least in the first day, he chose not to do that.
04:02Yeah, and I wonder, too, if he just resided to the fact that he's going to be a cowboy instead
04:09of the open market.
04:10But I don't know how much that affects the cowboy's conversation salary with him down the road.
04:15Like I said, voluntary, was it June 16th?
04:19Is the mandatory stuff?
04:21So I will look ahead to that time.
04:24If it's mandatory and he's not showing up, that's a different concern.
04:27But it is Jerry Jones.
04:29And it's fake voluntary, right?
04:31Yeah, yeah.
04:32You're supposed to be there.
04:33Yeah, they can't be with you.
04:34I want you there.
04:35And I see the text, what do voluntary mean?
04:37But that was the whole idea.
04:38It didn't work out very well for that player.
04:40The idea is it's voluntary and name only to skirt the CBA.
04:44Mm-hmm, but the idea that they want is true leadership does all the little things and is there for
04:53everything and always building.
04:55Dak would be, you know, those kinds of ideas.
04:58And they'll use Dak like that all the time, won't they?
05:00They'll be like, well, Dak this, Dak that.
05:02Dak's the greatest leader.
05:04And which he does the professional things, doesn't he?
05:08He does those things pretty well.
05:10And that's why he has the potential to be the MVP per Corey Majors.
05:18No, that is definitely not per Corey Majors.
05:21I heard it from you.
05:22No, you didn't.
05:22You heard it from Pete Prisco.
05:24No, I heard it from you who heard it from Pete Prisco, all right?
05:27So I don't, I mean, I know you.
05:30I trust you.
05:31So cut number 11, this audio is going to say it's from Pete Prisco, but I heard it from Corey.
05:38Dak Prescott's going to be the MVP.
05:40Okay.
05:40I think Dak Prescott, again, I say it time and again, every single season, he's the most
05:45underappreciated, underrated player in the National Football League.
05:48And if they had any sort of defense, he would be that much better.
05:53There's so, every time he took the field last year, he knew he had to put up big numbers
05:58in large part because the defense was awful.
06:00I think the defense is going to be better.
06:02New coordinator, new system, better players.
06:05I love what the Cowboys did in the offseason on the defensive side of the ball.
06:09And Dak Prescott's going to roll up big numbers.
06:12They're just not going to play as free as they've had to because they won't be forced
06:16to do so.
06:16So he probably will cut down on the mistakes and still be able to put up big numbers.
06:20I think Dak Prescott has a monster year.
06:21Now, Corey, what has led you to that belief that Dak is going to be the MVP?
06:27Was it just all the things that you were just saying?
06:29That was Pete Prisco.
06:31Ah.
06:32Did you tell Pete to say those things?
06:34Why would I tell Pete anything?
06:36I've never talked to Pete Prisco.
06:40Do I want to talk to Pete Prisco?
06:43I get it.
06:43Is that the kind of dude that I want to talk to?
06:45Because he has a powerful voice in the media world.
06:49Sure.
06:50And I'm just kind of curious.
06:51I don't disagree with a lot of the things that he said.
06:55Yeah.
06:56And if everything goes right, Dak absolutely has played at MVP level.
07:01I don't know if y'all know or not.
07:02A couple years ago, he finished second in MVP voting.
07:07It wasn't talked about much.
07:09Yeah, man.
07:10That feels criminal that that got underreported.
07:12Yeah, it was almost like the Angel Rees trade.
07:14Does the Jones family know about this?
07:16I don't know if they do or not.
07:17We should probably send a sexy pic.
07:19Yeah, we should send a text.
07:24But he's right.
07:25The defense should be a little bit better.
07:28It should be a little bit better.
07:30Dude, it has...
07:31That's not good enough, right?
07:32It has the...
07:34If it's a little bit better, that's not good enough for Dak to be MVP
07:38or this team to make the playoffs or anything, right?
07:40I think this defense can be above average.
07:45I'm not saying it can be...
07:47I think that's a bolder pick than what Pete said.
07:50One of the top fives.
07:51And maybe you were insinuating the Browns need to be a top five team.
07:55But I don't think it's going to be a top five yet.
07:58But it can be a little bit better.
08:01And that might put you at mediocre.
08:04Yeah.
08:04But last year, that's all we asked for was be a mediocre defense consistently.
08:08And this team's doing a lot of different things.
08:10And if that's the case, maybe Dak doesn't have to have 5,000 yards.
08:15Sure.
08:15But he still can.
08:16Yeah.
08:17And this offense is built and constructed in a way that you can have some massive big plays.
08:23That Washington game where you just obliterated them on Christmas,
08:26you can do that again over and over if your defense is pretty good.
08:30Now, the MVP odds that I saw, keep in mind,
08:34I saw these about an hour before the Miles Garrett trade yesterday.
08:38A lot of familiar faces.
08:40Josh Allen leading the way, 6-1.
08:42Lamar, 7-1.
08:43Drake May, 8.5-1.
08:45Burrow, 9.5-1.
08:46And Mahomes, 10-1.
08:48Then, Justin Herbert's at 11-1.
08:50And Dak is 7th on the list at 12-1.
08:54Followed by Stafford Love and Caleb Williams.
08:56One would think perhaps Matthew Stafford would move up just because this feels like a
09:01you play quarterback for the team with one of the best records awards as opposed to just MVP.
09:06But if you think Dak is going to be in the mix,
09:08I know I'm kidding about you and what Pete Prisco said.
09:1012-1 feels like a very good value.
09:13If that's something that folks out there believe could happen.
09:16This person is absolutely correct, though, Kevin.
09:19And I think you and I have discussed this at length.
09:21We have questions of why.
09:23From the 4-6-9, Dak needs to be better in the red zone.
09:27Big fact.
09:28So, this is one of the things that annoys me.
09:31He could obliterate some records if he is.
09:34I agree.
09:35It annoys me when people strictly talk about how good the offense was as a monolith because
09:42they look at the overall stats.
09:44That is something that is easy and at times lazy.
09:49Go into those games.
09:50There were at least two, maybe more games that, sure, your defense sucks.
09:56Sucked last year.
09:57And I agree to that.
09:58But if you're better in the red zone, you still win that game, even with an incompetent
10:04defense last year.
10:05So, that is something that needs to be significantly better.
10:09And recently, Shottie did discuss that, too, and how that was a shortcoming of their offense
10:15last year.
10:16And, you know, established that there probably needs to be some different kind of play calling,
10:21a little bit more study on what they need to do better there.
10:24And maybe if it's running the ball more effectively in there, maybe that could be the thing.
10:29It takes away from some stats.
10:30Who cares about that when you're winning games?
10:32Yes.
10:32But, again, I think this offense is designed to have some big numbers offensively, whether
10:40it be in the running game or the passing game.
10:43That's going to come.
10:44You have the talent to do it.
10:45That's the thing, too.
10:46When you don't have the talent, you see the result on the other side of the football last
10:50year.
10:50Not having the talent, not good enough.
10:52No matter what the coaching, your talent wasn't good enough last year.
10:55If you have the talent, which you saw offensively, you can do what they did.
10:59And if they have the talent defensively, they can be one of those teams, Kevin, that puts
11:03their quarterback in the conversation because of their record.
11:07Now, God, this stat can't be true, but I think it is, and it makes me so sad.
11:12Since he arrived at the 2024 trade deadline, Jonathan Mingo has six catches for 21 yards.
11:19Go.
11:19And no touchdowns.
11:21Was that all in one game?
11:23That feels like a subpar game, let alone a season and a half for a fourth round pick.
11:28Anyways, what would be your idealized version?
11:31Like, assuming Pickens is there, because I know at OTAs, hey, no Pickens gives everybody
11:36an opportunity, or maybe you think Valdez Scantling or Tyler Johnson get more of an opportunity
11:42early on to get their foot in the door heading into training camp.
11:45What would be your idealized top four or five wide receivers?
11:50Like, I'm assuming we're all on the same page.
11:52Seedy and Pickens, one and two, or if you want to flip them, doesn't matter to me.
11:57Then from there.
11:58Quite honestly, Kevin, past three, do not care.
12:02Okay.
12:03Jake Ferguson is my next receiver.
12:04And now, we can have the conversation for the sake of it, but your first three receivers
12:09are really good.
12:10Yeah.
12:10Seedy Lamb, I think, is a great receiver.
12:12George Pickens is a great receiver.
12:14Ryan Flannoy is coming on.
12:16Do you feel good with him at wide receiver three?
12:18Absolutely.
12:18I know what you said about Ferguson.
12:19Absolutely.
12:20No, beyond three, Ferguson's my fourth.
12:24Yeah.
12:24But I think that those three, as long as they stay healthy, you have one of the most, if
12:29not the most lethal trio of receivers running around on the field.
12:34And I'll take that any day with Dak out there and the Javante Williams running back situation.
12:39I'm not a huge fan of Valdez Scantling.
12:41I don't want Turpin focused too much on being a receiver.
12:44And when it comes to Jonathan Mingo, I got question marks.
12:47So, I like what I saw in Anthony Smith.
12:50That's going to be one of those guys.
12:52And quite honestly, I kind of like Treshawn Holden, too.
12:55With Anthony Smith, when I was watching him, did you get a chance to get your eyeballs on
12:59him, Alec?
13:00A little bit.
13:00He had some qualities I really liked about him.
13:04But again, you go up against the competition he's going up against, and you're like, okay,
13:08is that just him abusing bad competition?
13:10But he is a...
13:12Remember when...
13:14Was it Thrasher or something like that?
13:16We had a dude that everybody was really excited about, and we were like, is he really going
13:20to make this team, though?
13:21Right.
13:21And then it turned out, no, he didn't.
13:23It might be one of those where he's on, he's around, because he was a draft pick.
13:27But we really are just focused on those first three.
13:30But Valdez-Scantling will be...
13:33He'll have some really good moments where something good could have happened, and he
13:37dropped it.
13:37So essentially, are all the wide receivers fighting for one spot?
13:43Yes.
13:43And then could you possibly envision a scenario in which the Cowboys kind of follow that logic
13:51of, hey, you sort of dropped off a little bit in the return game, so Kamonte Turpin, we're
13:56not going to really use you as much as a wide receiver?
13:58Or would that just be insanity for the way the Cowboys roll, because they already view
14:02it as a two-in-one roster spot?
14:04Oh, yeah.
14:05No, that's probably the way that they view it.
14:06So you don't see any way in which they're like...
14:08He's there.
14:08And I can't say that Anthony Smith is fighting Valdez-Scantling, but I would see them keeping
14:13five, not six.
14:15Okay.
14:16That's just because I honestly think that you're still trying to figure out your depth
14:19at running back right now, and that might be a big factor for you.
14:23But I just don't see any reason, aside from injury, for you to keep six right now.
14:29Do you guys see a world in which Jonathan Mingo doesn't make this team?
14:33His cap hit is negligible.
14:35It's $1.1 million.
14:36You would just have to be admitting that that was a stupid trade.
14:39I mean, he was one of the best blocking wide receivers out there, Kevin.
14:44Yeah, that's great.
14:46I've said this many times.
14:48I do not want a wide receiver whose primary focus is blocking.
14:54If we get to the point, this feels like that stupid, was it the 0-9 draft, where we're
14:59like, oh, he's going to be our cold-weather kicker.
15:01Fine.
15:02If we go 17-0 and you're like, we really need to fine-tune a spot, there's Jonathan Mingo.
15:07I want a wide receiver that can catch a pass.
15:09Here's the thing that I'm actually very interested in.
15:15Will anybody look at what the Rams did last year with their 13 personnel?
15:23And just load up on tight end.
15:25Let's say, Kevin, you have Ferguson, Schoonmaker, Spanford, Princeton, Michael Trigg.
15:31I know DJ Rogers exists too, but that Michael Trigg addition is interesting.
15:35And with the way they seem to like Spanford, would it make sense for you to say, you know
15:41what?
15:41If we want to make our offense more explosive out of the run game as well, there are lots
15:47of elements that we can create in this to build really good plays from the tight ends
15:52as well as what our receivers can do.
15:54A hundred percent.
15:55I would rather the Cowboys carry four tight ends than that extra, extra wide receiver,
16:01especially since Turpin is, you know, dual positioning it up.
16:06Fine.
16:07Lamb, Pickens, Turpin, Flannoy, and then let the rest fight it out for one spot and give me
16:15that fourth tight end.
16:16From the 2-1-4, with Turpin's speed, you'd be a fool to take him off the field.
16:19It's just not.
16:20Not if it's impacting the return game.
16:22I don't agree with that.
16:24Like, he just doesn't make it.
16:25They don't have enough impact plays for him.
16:27Yeah.
16:28And he hasn't had enough of the impact plays to say that it changes the game for me to
16:32be like, I got to go with that.
