00:008 o'clock hour here on Sean and RJ on 105.3 The Fan.
00:05Sean Sharif is down and out today, but we'll still hear from him.
00:10We're still going to hear from him in about 20 minutes.
00:12Yeah.
00:13So he, when he went to the doctor yesterday, when he went to the urgent care,
00:16which he was giving us feverish updates about.
00:18I like it.
00:18I feel like everyone is sick right now.
00:20Yeah, there's a lot going around.
00:22It shouldn't be.
00:22It's June.
00:24I feel like there should not be sickness right now.
00:26The second wave started in June.
00:30Well, I mean, it depends on, you know, was it, was it, what was the weather like?
00:34Because once it warmed up, it was supposed to go away.
00:37Yeah.
00:38I don't know.
00:41You got any other thoughts?
00:43I was fine in June.
00:47All right.
00:48Although there's a good chance I was patient zero in the U.S.
00:52Everybody thought they had, like, I felt like everybody I talked to, they're like,
00:55I think I got it back in November, like, when it was first being talked about.
00:58I got it in February.
01:00Are you sure?
01:01Yeah.
01:01I got it when we were on the plane to Phoenix for the, for spring training.
01:05Did you tell anybody?
01:06Because I had tested it, and they're like, you have the antibodies.
01:09And I was like, how?
01:10And then I looked back, and that was the only time you were sick?
01:13The only time I was sick.
01:14And it was...
01:14Suckers and losers.
01:15I missed his day of the show on the road.
01:19So you were, you were...
01:21So wait, no, because when Wolchuk missed a day on the road last year, or when we were
01:26at Super Bowl or whatever, you and Sean were talking about how nobody had ever done that
01:29before.
01:30At the Super Bowl.
01:31No, but they said nobody's ever missed a show on the road.
01:33Oh, maybe I wasn't paying attention.
01:36That's possible.
01:36That's completely possible.
01:37But you were fine in June, is what you're saying.
01:39Yeah, I was fine in June.
01:39You know who else was fine in June?
01:41The Texas Rangers, as they win last night.
01:42They beat the Cardinals 2-1.
01:44They are on a four-game winning streak.
01:46They will take on St. Louis again this evening.
01:49The classiest fans in the world, as RJ Choppy always refers to them.
01:52Oh, yeah.
01:53But we got the Dallas Mavericks, who are also doing fine.
01:56And if you were tuned in yesterday to the G-Bag Nation, you heard this news break when
02:00it happened.
02:02And the Mavericks have picked the location for their next arena, an entertainment complex.
02:07That's really what is the real focus here.
02:11Like, Rick Welts is brought in here.
02:13Patrick Dumont has stuck through this.
02:15All of that stuff was done because it's not just, we want a nicer arena.
02:19We want to move into a nicer arena.
02:21They want the money that comes with the complex.
02:24Right.
02:25They all want their...
02:26That's what they're looking for.
02:27They all want to build their Texas lives, you know, or whatever they have in St. Louis,
02:32whatever they have in Atlanta with the Braves.
02:33All these baseball teams want that.
02:35These football teams.
02:36Go look at college football.
02:37We talked about this in the Kegger once, how all these colleges are building these entertainment
02:41districts around their stadium.
02:43Yep.
02:43Whether the stadium is there currently or not.
02:46You know what's going to happen next?
02:47We are going to get that around high school stadiums.
02:49I know.
02:50That'll be the next play.
02:51Because everything professional has worked its way down.
02:54Absolutely.
02:55It's just, it's working.
02:56It goes through a process.
02:57So colleges will get the entertainment districts and then eventually Allen High School is going
03:00to have...
03:01Sure.
03:01Like a casino where Brennan Soares can bet on the Allen game.
03:05Yeah.
03:05There you go.
03:06So it happens all the time.
03:10And it's going to continue to happen until we put a stop to it.
03:14Until we stop giving these owners and these teams money to build a stadium that they don't
03:19need.
03:20We've already got some feedback on the new arena and the announcement.
03:23As the Mavericks did say yesterday, they're moving to the Valley View Mall area.
03:26So that's 635 Preston-ish area.
03:29It's not far from the Galleria.
03:32And so it does keep them in Dallas proper, technically.
03:37It is sort of Addison-like line.
03:40Yeah, it's right around there.
03:42But it is technically Dallas.
03:43It's just not downtown Dallas.
03:44But that was a big goal of theirs.
03:46They are able to do that.
03:46They did get the 104 acres that they needed for all the different space that they wanted
03:49to do.
03:50Some of the feedback that we've got so far.
03:53254 says, my mom lives at Spring Valley and Hillcrest and traffic is already a beating.
03:56I can only imagine when the arena gets built.
03:59469 says, I live in Northwest Hills.
04:04Maybe that's North Richland Hills is what they meant.
04:05North Richland Hills.
04:06Arena is going to be a nightmare for the area.
04:08635 between I-35 and 75 is already a nightmare.
04:12Don't forget, HEB is building on Hillcrest.
04:14So that's going to be wonderful on Sundays to have Mavericks games and HEB there.
04:19They're also building an HEB at like Olympus in 635.
04:23So it's like another just west.
04:24Yeah, they're putting it in that old Fry's building where the Fry's electronics was.
04:28Yeah, by the dump.
04:29Yep.
04:29Yeah.
04:29So it's going in that building.
04:30214, I hate how spread out all the teams are.
04:32Cowboys should be near where Fair Park is.
04:34Rangers should be near the Farmer's Market and Stars Mavs keep themselves at the AAC.
04:38And then 214, Rangers absolutely did not need a new stadium and neither do the Mavericks.
04:44Such a huge unnecessary waste.
04:45And the general public should not have to ever take on any of the costs when teams do this.
04:50So that's one of the things that we're going to talk about here and that I was curious about.
04:53The AAC, I remember vividly that being a new facility.
04:58It still feels, it doesn't look new.
05:00I know for a lot of people when they go inside, they say it's not as up to date as
05:03some other places.
05:04But I remember the entire lifespan of this arena and it does not feel that long ago.
05:10I remember Reunion Arena, games being played there.
05:13The ballpark in Arlington, I remember that opening.
05:15And that was, they were basically ready to move out of there after 20 years.
05:19Now, AT&T Stadium has, looks like it'll live on for a while.
05:24Texas Stadium had a, what, almost 40-year run?
05:2840-year.
05:29Because of 71 when it opened.
05:3109 or whatever it was, it was almost 40 years.
05:33So, and you made a point.
05:36And that aged poorly.
05:37What did?
05:38Texas Stadium.
05:39Yes, it did.
05:41But it was thought of as very state-of-the-art at the time.
05:44You had brought this up last night when we were talking about this.
05:46I was mentioning, like, man, the turnover just, I hate it.
05:49Like, it's so, it's all this rapid flipping of where your home is.
05:53And you brought up the point that I thought was interesting, which is what this does to, like, the legacy
05:59of these venues.
06:00Are we just never going to get, like, these legendary stadiums anymore?
06:06Where, if Fenway Park was built today, the Red Sox would be in there for 20 years.
06:13Yeah.
06:13And they would say, can't do it here.
06:16We can't do this.
06:17We can't make enough money.
06:18The Red Sox have done a great job of basically bleeding the blood out of the rock.
06:24Mm-hmm.
06:25To get as much possible cash flow as they can from that stadium without moving.
06:30And you loved it.
06:31I loved it.
06:31It was great.
06:32You didn't anticipate you would.
06:33Did not, but you did.
06:34It was awesome.
06:34Awesome.
06:35And, you know, Wrigley Field, same thing.
06:38Are we never going to get Wrigley Field?
06:40It's uncomfortable.
06:43Concourses too small, not enough bat, all that crap, right?
06:47Are we just never going to get that?
06:49Is everything now going to be, if you don't have a Lambeau Field, your only option is to win the
06:58arms race?
07:00Because what is the arms race?
07:02Yeah, it's not college football where you have to recruit, you know?
07:06I understand.
07:07Well, I mean, so let's just talk about with baseball.
07:10Basketball, it's different, I would guess.
07:11Although basketball, they do want the amenities and the person or things like that.
07:14But I would assume you can make that happen in an arena without moving into a building.
07:19Like football, NFL players sign contracts without even visiting the facility.
07:24Baseball stadiums make sense to me.
07:27Because baseball stadiums directly impact your numbers.
07:30And so if you are, I could see somebody being picky about where they wanted to go.
07:34Juan Gonzalez, when he got traded to Detroit, couldn't get out of there fast enough because he hated the fences.
07:38I get it.
07:38I totally get it.
07:39And so it definitely happens.
07:41There's some guys who have been a little frustrated with the Rangers ballpark, obviously.
07:44Which one of the texts we got here just a few seconds ago said,
07:47I'm fine with people moving or with teams moving.
07:50As long as it's an improvement, the Rangers missed the mark.
07:52That was the problem there.
07:53Well, the Rangers got what they wanted.
07:55What the Rangers wanted is they said, basically, we're going to sacrifice charm.
08:00We're going to sacrifice nostalgia.
08:02We're going to sacrifice ambiance for air conditioning.
08:06Yeah.
08:06That's what they did.
08:07They said, we're going to sacrifice all that.
08:09We're going to sacrifice everything that is holy about Major League Baseball stadiums for air conditioning.
08:14You know what I hate the most about that stadium?
08:17Not to nitpick it.
08:18And we are talking Mavs here, too.
08:19But learn lessons from the Rangers if you can, Mavericks.
08:22I mean, NBA arenas, to me, are the most anonymous ones that exist.
08:25Like, they all pretty much look the same.
08:30But with the Rangers, it's that same height fence from foul pole to foul pole.
08:36That green fence just going across.
08:38Where it's like no variety, nothing, like no cool.
08:42Like, all right, this wall goes a little bit.
08:43This wall is like a 15-foot wall.
08:45And then you get towards center and it drops down.
08:46It's that high school stadium look of just the same fence all the way around.
08:50Which just said to me, like, lazy.
08:52They didn't care about aesthetic at all or anything else.
08:54They just went, we need a fence out there.
08:55Put a fence.
08:56Like, that to me, I think, represents every...
08:58Most are like that, though.
08:59No.
09:00Hell no, dude.
09:00There's always, like, different dimensions or different, like...
09:03They look like...
09:04I told this to pay when we're sitting in the stadium.
09:06You play MLB The Show.
09:07Mm-hmm.
09:08The Rangers stadium feels like the creative stadium that they let you do on MLB The Show
09:12that you really can't tweak it very much.
09:14You can put different logos on the walls, but it's going to be this very generic, like...
09:18Let's go look here.
09:20I think Toronto...
09:24Yankee Stadium...
09:25The Royals, I think, too.
09:26Huh?
09:27Royals is like that.
09:27It's just the same all the way around.
09:29No, Royals is not.
09:30Royals has, like, a left center, I think it is.
09:32Royals, where they've got the bullpen.
09:34Where they've got the bullpen, there's, like, a cutout where, like, the fence drops.
09:39And you've got the...
09:39Yes.
09:40You've got the Rays.
09:41The Rays have that whole...
09:42They used to have that thing where...
09:43You know that...
09:44The Rays, they would have...
09:45The Rays had a lower foul pole.
09:47Right there.
09:47Like, where the Angels have it and the Dodgers have it.
09:50Which, do you know why they have that?
09:52The Rays owner, the first guy who owned it, grew up watching...
09:56I can't remember who it was, Dodgers games?
09:58Yeah, it makes sense.
09:58Where he watched...
09:59He used to love...
10:00He fell in love with baseball watching guys rob home runs in the Dodgers, and he wanted
10:03to be able to see guys rob home runs in his stadium.
10:05And so he put it there, and that's how Evan Longoria hit that end-of-the-season shot just
10:09basically over that wall.
10:11But I'm pretty sure Citi Field's the same.
10:13I know Yankee Stadium's the same.
10:15Yankee Stadium is, yeah.
10:18I mean, they're all either green or blue.
10:20No, no, no.
10:20I'm not talking about the color.
10:21No, I know.
10:22I'm just saying.
10:22They're all either green or blue.
10:23But, like, you will have just the different...
10:24There's...
10:25It's such a basic, like...
10:27It's that same arc around the track.
10:29There's no weird dimensions.
10:30There's nothing about this ballpark that looks compelling.
10:34That's a weird take on your part.
10:35No, it's not.
10:35I'm going to show you during the break.
10:36I think the...
10:38I'm going to show you during the break.
10:39You're going to make me...
10:40I'm going to show you during the break.
10:41It's not a symmetrical stadium.
10:43It's quirky.
10:44No, it is not.
10:45It's like a perfect...
10:46There's jagged edges.
10:47It's not a perfect...
10:48With them, it is.
10:48Yes, it is.
10:49That's what...
10:49Go look next time you're there.
10:50I want you to look.
10:52Okay?
10:52All right.
10:53I want you to look.
10:53We're there.
10:54All right.
10:55So, in specific regards to the Mavericks and then moving to the Valley View Center now,
10:58I guess the big thing that's going to come with this is what are the plans for
11:01the entertainment complex?
11:02They keep promising...
11:03The entertainment complex is clearly the thrust for them.
11:06I think they would like to talk about it being, you know, a gambling tie-in of some
11:13sort, but they're not going to get that.
11:17It doesn't appear.
11:18So, if that's the case, I don't know what they're going to fill that 104 acres with.
11:23Hotels, I assume.
11:24Some shopping stuff.
11:26I would assume it would be a hotel.
11:26Texas Live type thing.
11:27Yeah.
11:28Entertainment district.
11:28Something like that.
11:30But, I don't know.
11:32That's going to be a...
11:33Like, we're getting a lot of feedback on the tech story.
11:34That's going to be a rapidly condensed area.
11:37And, to your point, I am...
11:39Like, we're already just saying goodbye to any memory that occurred at the AAC.
11:45Any title, anything else.
11:47Like, that all going out the door.
11:49You're not creating any sort of a legacy.
11:51You can't create the Boston Garden or whatever else.
11:53You can't create Madison Square Garden if you don't...
11:55Commit to a facility.
11:57Yeah.
11:58Look, I don't think they need a new stadium.
12:02I don't think the Stars need a new facility.
12:04Now, yeah, you want to get a hockey-only...
12:06You know, I get it, right?
12:09Because, you know, football and baseball used to share stadiums all the time.
12:13Basketball and hockey have shared stadiums for decades.
12:17Now, it's chic to get a 15,000-seat hockey stadium, hockey-only, and, you know, get a basketball-only
12:27facility as well.
12:28You know, teams want their own.
12:29I get it.
12:30Stars and Mavs are...
12:31You know what?
12:32There's just a couple that they don't want to live together anymore.
12:34You know what?
12:34If you want your own stadium, pay for it.
12:38But to ask the people to build a hockey arena and an NBA arena and a Major League Baseball stadium
12:45and an NFL stadium, I don't know, man.
12:50I don't know.
12:51It just seems like it never ends.
12:54It's never enough.
12:55Nope.
12:56It's too quick turnover, and it never allows you to feel comfortable or get comfortable in any one area.
13:02Like, Staples Center's not going away, is it?
13:04Well, I mean, it's not called Staples anymore, but yeah.
13:06Yeah, I wouldn't assume it's going anywhere anytime soon.
13:07Crypto, whatever the hell they call it.
13:09Whatever it's called.
13:09Yeah, they just built into it.
13:10I think it's AmeriQuest Arena, maybe.
13:12Dodger Stadium may go anywhere.
13:14That one maybe should.
13:16It's great.
13:17I think the Angels Stadium is better.
13:19Have you been to Dodger Stadium?
13:20Yep.
13:21I haven't been to the Angels Stadium, but I've been to Dodger Stadium.
13:23I thought Dodger Stadium was great.
13:24I just thought Dodger Stadium was generic.
13:27It's pretty generic, dude.
13:29Oh, man.
13:29I mean, in a way, but it's just cool being there.
13:34It's a history play more than anything else.
