00:26Why do trade unions even exist? Food for thought. If you are a working person, and you are not a
00:32member of a trade union, you do exactly what oligarchy wants you to do.
00:38Nothing. Most people think trade unions are about politics and work. They're not.
00:44Trade unions are about something much, much older than politics, or even work.
00:49They're about human nature. For all of human existence, and for almost all of the last 250,000 years, when
00:57modern humans existed, proto-humans lived in small groups of hunters and gatherers.
01:02If you were alone, you died. No food, no protection, no community.
01:08Our ancestors survived because they cooperated. And over hundreds of thousands of years of our evolution, we have developed something
01:16extraordinary.
01:17A deep sensitivity to fairness. Because unfair groups can't cooperate.
01:22Humans don't just notice when something is unfair. We instinctively react to it.
01:27That's why trade unions exist. Not because somebody invented an ideology, but because human beings instinctively organize when they feel
01:36they are being treated unfairly.
01:39No wonder that the roots of trade unions are older than civilization itself.
01:44The first recorded labor strike happened more than 3,000 years ago.
01:48In 1158 BCE, workers in ancient Egypt stopped working because they weren't being paid.
01:54Think about that. 3,000 years ago, workers already understood a simple truth.
02:01Alone, they had no power. Together, they did.
02:05Ancient Romans developed something similar.
02:08When ordinary people felt ignored, they would leave the city, refuse to work, refuse to fight, and refuse to cooperate.
02:16The elites quickly discovered something important.
02:19A society cannot function without the people who actually make it work.
02:23Trade unions are simply the modern version of a very, very old idea.
02:28When people stand together, they become impossible to ignore.
02:33Capitalism helped create an explosion of wealth unlike anything in human history.
02:38For thousands of years, living standards barely moved.
02:42Then, productivity exploded.
02:44Science advanced.
02:46Technology advanced.
02:47The economy grew.
02:49But growth creates a new question.
02:51Who gets the benefits?
02:53Who gets the bigger slice of the pie?
02:56Workers create value.
02:58Investors provide capital.
03:00Managers coordinate organizations.
03:02But how should the rewards be divided?
03:05That is the central question of every modern economy.
03:08And trade unions exist to make sure workers have a voice in answering it.
03:12Without unions, only capital negotiates.
03:16With unions, labor negotiates too.
03:19That is why countries with stronger unions historically achieved higher wages, shorter working hours, safer workplaces, and stronger social protections.
03:28Look at the last decades.
03:30Productivity kept growing.
03:32Workers became more efficient.
03:34Technology became more powerful.
03:36But in many countries, union membership fell dramatically.
03:41And something interesting happened.
03:43A larger share of economic gains started flowing upward.
03:47To executives.
03:48To shareholders.
03:49To the wealthiest groups in society.
03:51At the same time, workers often had less influence over wages, working conditions, and working time.
03:58Trade unions are not perfect.
04:00No human institution is.
04:02But without them, the balance of power shifts in only one direction.
04:07Trade unions are democracy in the workplace.
04:10They give ordinary people a collective voice in decisions that affect a huge part of their lives.
04:16Because if democracy matters in society, why shouldn't it matter at work?
