00:00europeans don't realize what they are part of every single day adults in the european union
00:05collectively have approximately 800 billion hours of media attention every year that's the time we
00:12spend on television radio music news youtube facebook instagram tick tock podcasts comment
00:20sections and endless scrolling and roughly one-third to one-half of that attention goes to
00:26social media platforms that means approximately 300 billion hours per year 300 billion hours of our
00:35attention now here's the question who actually creates the content that keeps us there meta
00:41google tick tock no to a massive extent ordinary people people who make videos write comments
00:50create memes build communities moderate discussions entertain educate explain the world and most of
00:58them they receive practically nothing for their work global creator economy data shows that the
01:04overwhelming majority of small creators earn no income at all and in europe with smaller language
01:09markets lower advertising rates and the dominance of american platforms realistically we're talking
01:15about 70 to 90 percent of digital creators in the eu who will never see any financial compensation
01:21for their work and now comes the hardest number if we add up the time europeans spend creating content
01:27for these platforms a realistic middle estimate is approximately 5 billion hours of work every year
01:34no that is not a typo 5 billion hours of work work that to a very large extent nobody pays

01:41that is equivalent to approximately 2.8 million people working full-time for an entire year think about
01:48that if meta google tick tock and the others actually employed the people doing this work they would be
01:54one of the largest employers in europe bigger than many entire national industries but they don't employ
02:00them they receive that content to a huge extent for free and meanwhile the european digital advertising
02:07market exceeded 120 billion euros last year and that's just advertising not data not algorithm
02:15training not retention not the value of simply getting people to open the platforms in the first
02:21place so the model is simple ordinary people create the content ordinary people give their time
02:27ordinary people give their data and the platforms monetize their attention this is not a conspiracy theory
02:34this is their business model and now the geopolitical point who owns these platforms meta usa youtube
02:41usa x usa reddit usa tick tock china so european creativity european attention european data european time
02:53and the profits to a large extent outside europe and we act as if this is normal but is it
02:59is it really
03:00normal that europe handed over its digital public sphere to foreign corporations is it really normal
03:05that millions of people create value and most of them see nothing in return is this really the best
03:11model we can imagine or have we simply become used to it because the first step toward change is simple
03:17understanding how this system actually works and asking ourselves whether we agree with it or not
