00:00but first let's get to the big story from the weekend big surprise the san antonio spurs who
00:04dominated the regular season over the oklahoma city thunder prove it was no fluke they win on
00:10saturday night 111 to 103 so they do cover and of course capture the point total there plus three
00:16and a half so that's a money line win for you as well wasn't a crazy game by the way
00:21for wemby just
00:2122 and 7 and julian champagne had 20 points now sga did have 35 points and nine assists but
00:29basically the thunders defense really failed them in the second half of this game here's dearon fox
00:35on a preview of the finals when you see the nba finals what do you picture uh i mean
00:44why not picture us holding the trophy at the end but i mean just thinking of everything that goes
00:50into it um just the blood sweat the tears the travel everything that we go through throughout
00:55the course of the regular season and then adding another 30 games like that that does a lot to
01:02your body but we're i think we're built for it i think we're prepared for it all right so game
01:08one
01:08is wednesday night of the nba finals the stanley cup finals begin tomorrow so we'll have previews
01:14of all of the games in the stanley cup and the nba finals as they basically play every other night
01:19but
01:20here is the opening line for game one the spurs will host the knicks and they're four and a half
01:25point favorites you see the total they're 218 and a half most believe that some money will come in on
01:30the knicks this could be four before they tip off wednesday night in texas all right now let's get to
01:35some baseball for the weekend what a great month it was for jacob miserowski it's going to be a tough
01:40call for pitcher of the month of may because miserowski threw seven more shutout innings so it's basically
01:46him and christopher sanchez who have been incredible brewers shut out the astros two to nothing the
01:51miz was five and oh 57 strikeouts and a 0.23 earned run average but the problem was sanchez didn't
01:57give
01:57up a run in may how about that both guys back to back here is the miz saying he had
02:02a decent month of
02:03may is he kidding you just finished a pretty impressive month how would you describe the month you had
02:09yeah it was pretty good uh i mean i haven't looked at all the numbers and such like uh so
02:15i couldn't
02:15tell you exactly what i did so but it felt good it felt like a pretty decent month it's probably
02:20one
02:20of those things that we look at you don't think of this season in terms of blocks of months exactly
02:26i
02:26mean that's what yeah you're trying to go home 162 games or whatever 30 starts i have so you know
02:33it's a span of six how many every minute would be in a month you know i don't really look
02:38at it that
02:38way you're kind of just looking at the whole season trying to figure it out how about if we
02:41told you your era was 0-2-3 for the month of may does that change your opinion at all
02:46i mean that
02:46that's decent no that's pretty good um but no i mean yeah again i can't look at it can't really
02:53focus on that because as soon as you do it goes haywire probably going to see mizorowski the all-star
02:58game again maybe even starting the game i guess we'll see all right hey baltimore orioles with a nice
03:03weekend again so they cap off their homestand seven and three impressive stuff to jump back in the race
03:08they beat the blue jays nine to five kyle bradish picked up the win homers from colton kouser and
03:14pete alonzo in the key victory solid homestand says manager craig albernaz it was a good homestand
03:20boys played well they competed great at bats defense was awesome base running it was just
03:28we're playing the baseball that we're capable of um you know just all the work that these guys
03:35i've been putting in relentlessly every day we're starting to see the rewards now and you know
03:41against some really good teams it's been fun to watch and especially with the stunning pitching
03:45you know stunning pitching has has really taken a step forward and it's been awesome
03:50guess who else is hot los angeles dodgers that shouldn't be a surprise nine to one they took care
03:54of the phillies they were big favorites here and yoshinobi amamoto struck out 10 in five and a third
04:00muncie and freeland homered in the game here's dave roberts after with another big win for la
04:06five series in a row is this the consistency that you expect out of this group now yeah yeah um
04:13you
04:13know you're gonna get beat at times uh it's gonna happen but i do think with the talent that we
04:18have
04:18if we you know focus and and play like we're capable of we should win series uh regardless home
04:25road um so this next one's gonna be a good one uh dimebacks always play us tough and um so
04:32play at
04:33their place is always difficult so this is gonna be a fun series coming up a rare series win these
04:39days for the boston red sox there haven't been many this season but they beat the cleveland guardians
04:44nine to four they were down four three in the seventh they came back to win and so interim manager
04:49chad tracy at least has this series to be happy about your overall thoughts on the weekend winning a
04:54rubber game which you guys hadn't done and i mean i guess in your tenure yeah i mean you know
04:59losing
05:00the first game and you're kind of up against it um on the road and you know come back and
05:05win the game
05:05yesterday and then at one point be trailing late today and fight back and put a big number up there
05:09and win a series now you have an off day and you're going home so that's a that's a big
05:13win today but a
05:14big couple wins to finish this thing off also a big win for the pirates as they sweep the seemingly
05:20fast falling twins nine to three pirates win his home favorites starting pitching has been
05:25incredible for pittsburgh uh brandon ashcraft yesterday struck out 11 in six innings he braxton
05:32ashcraft he has been fantastic here is ashcraft after the game on what worked for him kind of my
05:39ammo is just staying in the zone um suffocating the zone of strikes um i put a lot of trust
05:46in henry
05:47joey indy whoever's back there um just to get in play and kind of understand what's going on with
05:53hitters and it allows me to kind of turn my brain off and focus on the task at hand as
05:57throwing strikes
05:58getting guys out in the zone um so being able to have the confidence in them back there um it's
06:05really
06:06by the way the pirates also placed pitcher carmen lodzinski on the restricted list he refuses to
06:13pitch for the pirates kind of a bizarre story there we'll tell it to you later all right now let's
06:17get
06:17back to some final scores the reds do win yesterday over the atlanta braves but they may have a very
06:23critical injury to their starting lineup as ellie de la cruz left in the fifth inning with a hamstring
06:28issue here's terry francona on that and on ellie was listed as tightness in the hamstring do you know
06:34the severity yet yeah and the reason they said that is he think he feels like he caught it before
06:40it did anything worse um saying that we're gonna get him scanned at nine in the morning and we'll know
06:48more tough injury for the reds all right white socks just keep winning even without murakami in
06:54the seventh inning they come back to win two to one and beat the tigers and yes that's a sweep
06:59the
06:59tigers are in last place in the central how about that colson montgomery homard
07:04that was a key hit in the game and here he is after the game on the rally yeah i
07:09mean you've seen
07:10it all year um you know you've seen it in you know big games and you know it doesn't matter
07:14you know
07:15division games are division games you know these are the games that we want and you know these are
07:18games we're not gonna we're not gonna stop and um i think we've shown all year that we're a team
07:23that you know if they get ahead that you you know you that you can't just stop you know we're
07:27we're
07:27gonna be you know one about away one guy away and um i mean i credit you know chase getting
07:34on
07:34gonzo getting hit and then you know peters you know just doing what he does puts the ball in
07:38play and creates havoc and um i just think that's what we do sticking in the american league we'll
07:43go to the east the yankees put 13 runs up in the third and beat the a's 13 to 8
07:48ben rice had five
07:49runs driven in juan soto hit a grand slam the mets swept the marlins over the weekend that was tough
07:55for
07:55me the giants ended up scoring 19 runs on 25 hits in their win against the colorado rockies so they
08:04win a slight road favorites and avoid being swept it was willie adamas who had a grand slam and four
08:10runs driven in and jung ho lee had five hits in this game as the giants bats finally came alive
08:22welcome back to newswire here on sports grid always good to catch up with my friend pat evans
08:26from legal sports report for the very latest on sports betting and more pat is here with us great
08:31to have him here as we get the month of june off and sports betting to a good start here
08:35hey a pretty
08:36nice story here uh pat the state of connecticut wanting to make sure that toll-free lines are
08:42correctly set up certainly this is a very positive move in the world of sports betting but a little
08:47bit of a wrinkle here as well tell us more yeah so connecticut is one of those states that a
08:52lot of
08:53bills the last two years have been introduced just kind of fine-tuning the sports betting markets and
08:58guardrails and and of course you have senator the u.s senator richard blumenthal from connecticut who's one
09:03of the the leading voices at a federal level to put better um nationwide guardrails in so connecticut is
09:10just one of those states to kind of watch when you're when you're seeing stuff and and yeah
09:13governor ned lamont signed two bills recently um that you know it requires sports betting operators
09:20to offer a toll-free support line rather than just like a chat bot or whatever is on there so
09:25that is
09:25in there um it also adds a provision for uh to change the state's cheating laws which you know kind
09:33of
09:33surprised me that there was a just cheating law it apparently went into effect in 1995 and uh obviously
09:40sports betting was not legal back then so uh they instituted that now and that will go into effect
09:45later this year and that you know says that you can't cheat uh you know you can't know results or
09:52or affect anything so that will go into the effect there and then there was another bill that was to
09:56create a um prediction market study which everything is all the rage uh prediction markets are now and
10:02of course we've got multiple states fighting lawsuits against both the prediction markets and
10:07the federal c cftc which regulates them federally and this is just the uh the state lottery the tribes
10:15that are contracting for online casino and sports betting and the state uh to say hey what is this
10:21doing to our market and then what what can we do about it and so that will probably come into
10:27effect
10:27next legislative session where lawmakers can then say okay we'll see what to do now i did a story
10:32recently before a couple months ago uh that said you know these state laws that are trying to limit
10:38or tax prediction markets do not matter until uh you know the supreme court rules on it and gets
10:44all these state-by-state lawsuits out of the way um but at least these states are trying to get
10:49ahead of that
10:50so yeah just a lot of bills that have come into connecticut to to fine-tune the market and and
10:55we
10:56see some of them to get through which might be uh kind of a you know hint to what other
11:01states might
11:01do in the future okay fair enough now let's get to a story that we covered last week on the
11:06surface a
11:07little bit with sam mcquillen which is this idea that louisiana wants to protect their athletes more
11:13and stop or at least at least deter the harassment of athletes pat but as i asked sam and i
11:20will ask
11:20you the same is this something that's genuinely enforceable it seems really hard to you know go to
11:27social media accounts and try and find who these people really are and then you know fans yelling
11:32you know you lost my parlay things like that how do they enforce this sort of thing yeah so i
11:38think
11:38that's something that the the state regulators will have to work with both sports books uh and the
11:44athletes and teams themselves and hearing from them what might you know be the issues and you know this
11:52is this was a big issue i think a couple years ago when you know the dayton head uh head
11:56basketball
11:57coach came out and said hey our players are getting bombarded with threats and all this uh the ncaa you
12:04know has come out and strong uh push for um banning collegiate prop bets which they you know believe
12:11will help protect player safety because if you can't you know guess that you know jeremy fears jr for
12:17my spartan fans out there um you know i'm a spartan uh you know doesn't make these many assists then
12:24you're not gonna send him a dirty you know mean text or dm um so yeah it is questionable on
12:30how you
12:31can enforce it but yeah this passed unanimously in in the louisiana legislature and you know so
12:37obviously they believe that there is some way to enforce it and we'll see i'm sure they'll do a good
12:41job of letting us know how many people they do end up punishing or things like that uh similarly and
12:47i think this might kind of be a better way of understanding how they might enforce it is there's
12:52a bill in process in new york that is similar and it would prohibit bettors um from having sports
12:59betting accounts from complaints uh that are criminally connected to threats to athletes
13:05refs coaches the like so i think at that if it's elevated to the fact to the law enforcement that's
13:12when you can say okay we can enforce this and you're not going to have a sports betting account
13:16you're going to get fined probably maybe if it's severe enough maybe some jail time
13:21who's to say um so that's that's a huge factor there in louisiana and and new york potentially and
13:27it does note and you know now that you've asked this maybe i'll do this i'll do a little digging
13:31for you and we can talk about it next week is you know ohio uh banned uh harassing or has
13:39banned
13:40sports betting accounts for people who have been found to be guilty of this and so has west virginia
13:45so i'll do some looking into that and see how many people have enforced and see how we can do
13:49that
13:49i'll do that just for you craig um but in louisiana i should also know last year they uh unanimously
13:56banned
13:57uh sweepstakes casinos the governor came back and vetoed that bill and said that the regulator has
14:06enforceable rights to that and then they sent 40 season desist letters this year the legislature
14:10returned and still weren't happy with the sweepstakes kind of laws on the book so they went ahead and
14:15added it to the racketeering charges uh in louisiana and the governor signed that as well so
14:20some big action in louisiana in terms of governor signatures for those bills
14:25something i never thought would ever come to pass it's kind of happened occasionally with sports
14:31books and you know advertising a guy gets hurt now you get your money back i never thought that this
14:36would actually be a bill i thought it was just a good promo for fan duel and draft kings and
14:40some of
14:40these other companies if you know for example your running back got hurt in the first quarter or wide
14:45receiver or even quarterback we're gonna avoid those bets made the better feel good but actually
14:50going into a law how is this possible yeah i mean again new york is one of those states that
14:56kind of
14:57leads uh the states in term in fine-tuning the sports betting regulations and laws and yeah to your
15:04point this is something that gets so much social media chatter so much uh just general betting talk when
15:09you're with friends out at the bar or whatever is yeah if you've got a bet on a running back
15:15to
15:16you know rush for 50 yards and he's hurt in the first quarter and he's well then you're mad you're
15:20getting mad at the sports book and and some sports books kind of set that precedent of you know here
15:25here's
15:26your money back kind of as a goodwill gesture but to me it's like well you made that bet and
15:31that's
15:31part of the game is an injury so how does that work um but you know here in new york
15:36you've got a bill
15:36being introduced that that that would um you know make sports books have a a process to
15:45refund a bet if somebody's hurt or gets benched or or what i don't know if the benching is is
15:50necessarily part of it but would kind of regulate it and make a very firm process for it so you're
15:56not
15:57left wondering oh this guy got hurt last time i bet on somebody and he got hurt i got my
16:02money back
16:03and you can see how that would be kind of inconsistent and kind of frustrating for bettors
16:07so we'll see if this makes any sort of uh progress in new york or or if it does make
16:13it there does it
16:14kind of make sports books do it nationwide or do other states start to say hey that was a good
16:20idea
16:21we'll do that just for consumer safety and satisfaction more than you know anything else
16:25um also of note there's a couple of other bills moving along in new york you know one is to
16:31ban
16:31billboard ad billboard ads anybody who's been in a state with legalized sports betting knows that as
16:38soon as it launches those ads are everywhere they're on the sides of buses on the sides of
16:43you know the highways what what have you and and they want to kind of bring it back
16:47uh and say no you can't do that kind of like cigarette ads uh and things like that we've seen
16:52lots of markets kind of address how sports betting is advertised and trying to minimize the
16:58uh amount of ads that maybe people under 21 would see when it comes to sports betting so
17:04we'll see if any of these get uh moved forward in new york and of course if they do or
17:08even if
17:09they don't we'll bring it back here and i'll talk to you about it uh at a later date and
17:13for sure
17:14check out pat over at legalsportsreport.com for all of these topics and a whole lot more thanks
17:19again pat for coming on the show really appreciate it thanks as always craig
17:22you
