Castle Impossible - Season 2 Episode 1 - The Secret Library
Transcript
00:02Once upon a time, there lived a fair maiden and a handsome prince, named Daphne and Ian.
00:15Hailing from the land of California, they were high school sweethearts who married.
00:22And then, one day, Daphne inherited an ancient castle in a faraway kingdom called France.
00:30People keep asking us if living at the Chateau is like a fairy tale. And it is. But...
00:38These joys are rotting, man.
00:41Is that fungus growing from the ceiling?
00:43We've got a huge problem.
00:45Daphne and Ian's destiny...
00:47Oh, no.
00:48...is to rescue the castle from ruin.
00:51If you compare this castle renovation to your average home renovation, it's...
00:55Like, 50 times bigger.
00:57Yeah.
00:59It's a whole village.
01:03So far, we've managed to renovate the Chateau so that we can live and work here and develop the wedding
01:08business.
01:09But we've invested every cent we have into this place.
01:13We've got 80,000 euros worth of work.
01:17Every renovation that we do has to be bringing revenue in.
01:21What do you want to do with this?
01:22A tea room.
01:23This is the perfect place for a medieval tavern.
01:25In the dungeon?
01:27I inherited the Chateau from my grandfather.
01:30Keeping it alive for future generations is what our goal is.
01:33Bon appétit.
01:34Bon appétit.
01:38It's really beautiful.
01:41Wow.
01:43Incroyable.
01:47Will Daphne and Ian's fairy tale...
01:50Whoa.
01:51...become a nightmare?
01:53Oh, la, la.
01:55Or will they live happily ever after?
01:59I hope it's happily ever after.
02:01That's the best option.
02:11Just keeping the lights on for the Chateau is a huge expense.
02:15The electricity bill is outrageous.
02:18Through the roof.
02:20I mean, the light bulbs alone, we're replacing like 600 light bulbs a year.
02:23We have a minimum expense of 10 grand on just tree work at the Chateau.
02:29Every time we have to get the fuel tank refilled, it's 50,000 euros.
02:325,000 liters.
02:34We're going to be here for a while.
02:36We have to sell a minimum of 30 to 40 weddings a year just to maintain the cost of running
02:43the Chateau.
02:44The economy is not really in our favor and there are not as many people getting married this year,
02:50which is really tough for us.
02:53So we need to look at how we can branch out and find different revenue sources.
02:59I do have a renovation in mind that could help boost our income.
03:03There's a room upstairs that I think would work really well for photo shoots and filming.
03:08And it is in desperate need of a renovation.
03:12I always get a little bummed out when I walk past this room and I see these pulleys because...
03:16Yeah, I know.
03:17It's kind of an eyesore.
03:19We had a massive oak beam in the dining room and that was cracking.
03:23Basically, they're taking the beam that was cracking and attached it to the big beam above that.
03:30So we can't take the pulleys out, but we can create a bookshelf in front of them and hide them.
03:37One of the main things that our Chateau is lacking is a big, beautiful library.
03:43Because it's so much taller than it is wide, it could have that library vibe.
03:50This room is right in the heart of the Chateau, so it deserves to be a magical space.
03:55It's on the second floor, close to four renovations we completed last year.
04:00The royal bedroom next door, the playroom, our offices in the bureau and salon, and the Chateau bathroom.
04:09The Chateau bathroom looks so beautiful that people keep asking to do photo shoots in there.
04:14It really feels like an area where we could grow.
04:16And the best part about creating a library is that we would also be able to enjoy it with our
04:20friends and family.
04:22My grandpa read to me as a kid and my dad would always read me like fairy tales.
04:27I've just always loved having books around and having stories.
04:32This room does feel like it's been adjusted.
04:35It could have been a bedroom, but this is so small for a bedroom.
04:39It must have at least incorporated the next room over.
04:43Well, there used to be a bathroom here next door to this room.
04:47There were some gorgeous bathrooms next door, but the weight of the marble that they used was so heavy.
04:55That was the reason the beam below cracked and we had to take all the marble out.
05:00If we're going to attract photo shoots to this room though, we're going to have to make it feel really
05:05magical.
05:06Maybe we can do something with like secret doors or something like that.
05:09I like the sound of that.
05:12We need to replace the tired and torn wall coverings.
05:16Grand floor to ceiling bookcases are a suitable size for a castle and will hide those ugly metal pulleys.
05:22Adding antique paneling and molding will provide a refined library feel.
05:27I'd love to hide a secret door behind that shelving.
05:30And we'll need comfy furniture where we can curl up with a pile of books on those rainy afternoons.
05:35We've set aside $20,000 for this renovation.
05:39Oh, that's just a closet.
05:41Maybe this will be like where the comics are stored in the library, the comics section.
05:46Okay.
05:47Think about it.
05:48All right.
05:48I have.
05:56Hi, Dad.
05:57Hi, Sabrina.
05:58Hi.
05:59I love your ears, Sabrina.
06:01Meow.
06:02Meow, meow.
06:03Sabrina is my little sister.
06:05She is now seven years old and she lives back in California with my dad and Sabrina's mom, Celeste.
06:11You know why we are calling?
06:12Why?
06:13Because we bought tickets and we're going to come see you.
06:16Wait, you got tickets to come to France?
06:19Yeah.
06:20Yeah.
06:20Really?
06:22Yeah.
06:23We can't wait anymore.
06:24We're so excited to see you.
06:27Oh, that's so great.
06:29When are you guys coming?
06:30Two weeks from now.
06:31Two weeks?
06:32Just before Thanksgiving.
06:34I hope it's okay.
06:35This is literally the best news.
06:38My dad and I have a super strong bond and I haven't spent nearly enough time with Sabrina
06:43in the last few years.
06:44It really breaks my heart.
06:46Sabrina, are you excited to come back to the Chateau?
06:49Yes.
06:49Are you excited to see Arkea?
06:53Yeah.
06:54The last time Sabrina and my dad came to France was three years ago.
06:57I have managed to see them in California.
07:00I saw them for like two days, six months ago.
07:02So I am really excited to see them.
07:05I love you guys so much.
07:07I love you.
07:07I love you.
07:09I love you too, Sabrina.
07:11We'll see you in a couple weeks.
07:15Ian!
07:16Ian!
07:18Ian, Ian, Ian, Ian!
07:29It is a really nice fabric.
07:30It's just a bummer.
07:31It's so messed up.
07:34This closet's huge.
07:36You could probably put a toilet in here.
07:39That'll give me a really comfortable place to finish Game of Thrones.
07:44Right now I'm under the staircase.
07:47How do we get up these stairs?
07:50Huh.
07:51There's this like little half room up here.
07:54Which was probably used for storage.
07:57You think they just added this little piece of wall in?
07:59Because it's very clearly cracking at the bottom and the top.
08:03Which makes me feel like it's not a supporting wall.
08:05You could, in theory, just open this up.
08:07And you would have, what do they call it?
08:09A mezzanine?
08:10Mm-hmm.
08:11That would be nice.
08:11Yeah.
08:12That would be very nice.
08:14Unusual features will help the library stand out to clients
08:16looking for a photo shoot location.
08:18If we can open up a mezzanine into the library,
08:21it's going to be the feature that makes the space super unique.
08:28We've decided to reduce the height of the bookshelves and demolish some of the wall between the library and the
08:33storage room upstairs.
08:35This will create a mezzanine level with a balcony overlooking the library.
08:41These are incredible ceilings.
08:43And they're a little cracked.
08:45But it's nice to be able to see them so close up.
08:50All of the rooms on the second floor have beautiful Renaissance painted ceilings.
08:55But the library doesn't.
08:57So I'm curious to know if somebody just, like, covered them up.
09:01And if we have a beautiful surprise under there.
09:06Be careful.
09:08Be so careful, Ian.
09:10Let's see what we see with that little camera.
09:12We have this tiny fiber optic camera that allows us to actually see what's behind certain walls, or in this
09:17case, a ceiling.
09:19What do you see?
09:20A lot of your face, man.
09:21A lot of your face.
09:23Okay.
09:25Okay.
09:25Turn it the other direction.
09:27I see plaster.
09:29I mean, I see colors.
09:31Hold on.
09:32How far does it go?
09:34I think that's painted ceiling.
09:37We have painted ceilings, Ian!
09:40Seriously?
09:41This is opening a whole new can of worms.
09:44Because I don't know who covered the ceilings.
09:47I don't know why they covered them.
09:49They're painted.
09:49The question is, how good of shape are they in?
09:52If we go through all the work of uncovering them,
09:55and there was actually some serious damage somewhere,
09:58then we have to pay to put it back up.
10:01And that's going to leave us with no budget for the rest of the renovation.
10:05It's probably got some problems, but it's the original ceilings.
10:09But if we uncover them and we discover that we have gorgeous ceilings,
10:13it'll be completely worthwhile.
10:16This is going to be a gamble, Ian.
10:18This is a really big gamble.
10:32The last monster of the world.
10:32We have no choice.
10:32Well, we slept on it.
10:33And what we realized is that if there is a chance we have 400-year-old painted ceilings,
10:39we have no choice.
10:40We have to see what's under that plaster.
10:47Whoa!
10:49Ian.
10:50Ian!
10:52What the heck?
10:54This is incredible.
10:55Right?
10:56These are going to be a lot of cleaning up,
10:58but they're intact, so it was definitely worth the gamble.
11:01Absolutely.
11:02What's going on over here?
11:04So this doesn't have these massive oak joys going through,
11:07and I'm pretty sure there's a fire stack just above this.
11:10That would make sense.
11:11We might have to leave this in place,
11:13but we've got 400-year-old hand-painted ceilings.
11:18I literally feel like we just found treasure.
11:20The painted ceilings date back to the 1600s,
11:24but the chateau itself goes way further back.
11:27A thousand years ago,
11:28there was a massive medieval fortress here
11:30that actually extended all the way to the moat.
11:32All that's left now is the dungeon and the moat itself.
11:35Fast forward a few hundred years.
11:381508, the chateau that you see today was built.
11:41A century later, Leonora Dori renovated the chateau
11:45and added gardens and water features.
11:47She left behind a huge amount of wealth
11:52that no one could ever find,
11:55so it might be hidden amongst these walls.
11:59After her death, Louis XIII took the chateau
12:01and gave it to his best friend, Charles Duc de Lune.
12:05Louis ended up spending quite a bit of time here with Charles.
12:08During the French Revolution, the chateau owner actually managed to keep his head,
12:12but the state still took the chateau and sold it on.
12:16And then in the 19th century, the chateau had a bit of a makeover,
12:19where they added the bell tower.
12:21And a gorgeous stairwell was put in.
12:24In the Second World War, the chateau was actually occupied by the Nazis.
12:27Basically, anything that wasn't held down with a nail, they took.
12:30The chateau went through a few more owners after that,
12:33but it ended up being abandoned for 10 years,
12:36and that's when my grandpa came in and swooped her up.
12:47I am so excited for my dad and Sabrina to arrive.
12:49I couldn't sleep last night.
12:51My dad loves this property,
12:53and he even got married to my mom at the chateau.
12:59My dad was born in Germany.
13:01He met my mom in Paris,
13:02and they moved to California before I was born.
13:05Oh, look at this, Daphne.
13:07You can't believe it. Look at this.
13:08I know!
13:10Hi, sweetie!
13:13Oh!
13:16How was your flight?
13:17Aw!
13:18Yeah?
13:19Got you a little Archaea.
13:21Aw!
13:24I missed you so much.
13:26Me too.
13:29Wow, that's incredible.
13:30You guys have been really busy.
13:32Oh, yeah.
13:38Papa, you want a coffee?
13:39That would be great.
13:40Sabrina, did you want some water or some juice?
13:43I want some juice.
13:47I can't believe how this has changed.
13:49It was much darker before.
13:52What I see, it's a lot of light.
13:54Guess what?
13:56I brought something.
13:57Oh, did you find it?
13:58Look at this.
14:00Oh, my goodness.
14:02Ian, this is the Victorian fairytale book
14:05that my dad would read to me as a child.
14:08What?
14:09Sabrina, have you read this?
14:10Yeah.
14:10Well, we're going to change that.
14:12We'll read you some stories from here.
14:15How does it feel to be back in France?
14:17Okay.
14:18Yeah?
14:18Are you happy to see Archaea again?
14:20Yeah.
14:21Has she grown?
14:22Yes.
14:23I'm excited to see you.
14:25Oh!
14:27I'm so happy to see you too, love.
14:35We need some sort of wooden structure to create frames
14:41and anything decorative that we could possibly put in there.
14:45Tall pieces, because the library is pretty tall.
14:48Yes.
14:48The hangar is kind of fun.
14:50It's like a mystery box.
14:51Watch out for the head.
14:52Ah!
14:53He's already lost a body.
14:55Daphne's grandfather liked to go to old brokants
14:58and yard sales and buy random materials.
15:01I mean, this is massive.
15:02Right?
15:02Wouldn't that be such a cool bookshelf?
15:05Like, the woodwork on this is really beautiful
15:07and really intricate.
15:08It's definitely Rococo style.
15:12Rococo?
15:13Yes.
15:14Yeah, I knew it was.
15:15Kind of.
15:24I like this a lot.
15:26This is gonna be so good.
15:34I can't believe it's snowing in November.
15:37Normally we don't get snow until like February.
15:40Ah, it's always so nice to see the chateau.
15:43She's beautiful, even when it's cold.
15:47It's been a while since my dad has been in France.
15:49A lot has happened in three years.
15:51I managed to pay off my inheritance taxes.
15:53We've started doing renovations.
15:55We've started fixing things up.
15:57We've expanded our business.
15:59So how has it been going?
16:01It's been nonstop, Papa.
16:03Ian and I have just really realized we need to do renovations
16:07that allow us to continue making money so that we can continue to do renovations.
16:14But, I mean, there's so much that still needs to be done, Papa.
16:17I mean, it is still a question every day of whether or not this is all worth it
16:23because of how much we miss everyone.
16:26It's especially hard when I see how fast Sabrina is growing up.
16:32Well, I wish I could be here more often to help you.
16:36Me too.
16:38I'm happy you're here, Papa.
16:41Mom, when am I going to go get leaves?
16:43You want to go pick leaves?
16:44Let's go pick some leaves.
16:45Okay, let's go get some.
16:47It feels really rare.
16:49I'm actually able to take a moment and enjoy the chateau.
16:52They're nice ones.
16:53They look like snowflakes.
16:55Really?
16:55They do.
16:56Like snowflakes?
16:57Having my dad and Sabrina here is helping me take that time to just breathe
17:01and realize all that we've achieved in the last three years.
17:10We win.
17:12Okay.
17:17It is so incredible to have my dad and Sabrina here,
17:20but I really want them to be able to actually enjoy the library while they're here,
17:24which means we need to get a move on.
17:36Oh my God.
17:38Ian?
17:38Yeah?
17:39This wall is moving.
17:44What?
17:46It's like it has no support underneath it.
17:49Wait.
17:50Hold on a sec.
17:52Show me.
17:54There's nothing supporting this wall.
18:09This should not move.
18:10I don't know what's keeping it up though.
18:14I can just put my fingers under the wall.
18:17Honestly, this room is already at the limit of our budget.
18:20You can't have a wall this heavy just floating.
18:24That's super dangerous.
18:25How do we even take a wall like this down?
18:29Carefully.
18:30We have no option.
18:31We need to take out this wall because it's way too dangerous.
18:35And then we can put in a new wall.
18:37And I can see that this wall is definitely not attached to anything above it.
18:43It seems like it might just be wedged in from the sides and that's how it's still standing.
18:48So this wall is not structural.
18:51What I don't want is this wall to just fall backwards because beneath this is the big dining hall of
18:59the chateau.
19:00And if this much weight just collapses on this floor, it might damage the ceiling below.
19:11I'm getting a little carried away with a chisel, so I think we might just keep taking walls out.
19:18Hello.
19:20Hi.
19:22We're opening the wall in the mezzanine to add another level to the library.
19:38You're so cute up there.
19:41The view is awesome.
19:43What about putting a projector screen there and just making this into a big cinema theater?
19:49We just get a popcorn machine up here.
19:51Oh my gosh.
19:53Books are great.
19:55But have you seen the extended edition of Lord of the Rings?
20:02So Daphne and her dad found this random bust in the hangar.
20:05And it seems like it was made out of plaster.
20:08Oh, it's got some weight to it, so that's good.
20:10Tomas is a stonemason.
20:12So Daphne's asked if he can work on this bust.
20:14But first it needs to be cleaned up.
20:17The plan is to marbleize it.
20:18So we want to make it look like a marble, like a stone.
20:22Okay.
20:24But I think I'm just going to paint the whole thing, then introduce the other colors over it.
20:28So then you'll see kind of veining.
20:32Yeah, he's got a booger up his nose.
20:33Oh, a nasty one.
20:36Yeah.
20:37It's great having him as a father-in-law because he's just really easygoing.
20:41When he saw how much I love Daphne and care for her, he immediately respected that and we never had
20:48problems.
20:50Also, Tomas is German.
20:52I don't know if you could tell.
20:53He calls potato chips potato ships.
20:58When I first started showing up, were you concerned?
21:00No, actually, somehow with you I never had any awkward feeling.
21:05That's good.
21:06I remember though that when she kind of like dished you for a moment.
21:10Oh, I remember.
21:11I said, are you sure?
21:13You know, and then you were back in the picture, so.
21:16One way or another, it worked out.
21:19And as a father, I feel quite good.
21:22I feel like she's in good hands.
21:24Hmm.
21:34Okay.
21:36Last piece of the puzzle.
21:39We built out a partition wall to replace the wall that was just floating.
21:44And we've hidden the ugly metal support pulleys inside it.
21:49We've also built some framing for the shelves and we'll finish them with the antique pieces that we found.
21:54I feel like it works really well in my head.
21:57I'm a little bit nervous when we actually see everything coming together.
22:01Keep going.
22:02Oh my gosh.
22:04This is...
22:04Too big, it's coming down!
22:06We're gonna catch it!
22:06Catch it! Catch it! Catch it!
22:11This is...
22:12Too big, it's coming down!
22:13We're gonna catch it!
22:13Catch it! Catch it!
22:16That was a cue to you guys to catch it.
22:20Sorry.
22:22Luckily, there's no real harm done.
22:25Okay.
22:27Okay.
22:30Alright.
22:32How are we gonna get that many books?
22:34Let's just go to the library and rent out like a million books and then just not return them.
22:40Have you ever gotten library fees?
22:41Because I have and that adds up quick.
22:44Put on my grandma's card.
22:45That's what I would do.
22:48Yeah.
22:57We need furniture for the library and I really love this chair.
23:01But the fabric is too far gone.
23:06We were able to pull off a bunch of the old fabric from the library walls.
23:13But I just absolutely loved the swans in here.
23:18We just need to make sure that the medallion is really centered.
23:24And now I just need to make sure the fabric is tight all the way around.
23:32Unfortunately, it was not working for me to put the pins back into the chair.
23:37So now we've resorted to a more modern way of reupholstering, which includes a stapler and these cool beads that
23:48you basically just cover all the staples with.
23:50And the truth is, you get the same effect, but a much lighter workload.
23:58In the library, there's a gap above the fireplace where the original artwork is missing.
24:02And so I'm going to paint a panel to cover that gap.
24:06And I'm using the same style as the original design.
24:09And I'm adding a personal touch.
24:13I looked up the coat of arms for Magnus, which is Daphne's grandfather's last name.
24:19Looks kind of like House Lannister, if I'm going to be honest.
24:22Over here, we have the Martini family crest.
24:26My family did come from both Portugal and Italy.
24:29I know my Italian family name is Martini.
24:50Beautiful.
24:52I know we're in France, but there's an American portion.
24:55It's not Thanksgiving if the plate isn't overfilled.
24:57Right.
24:59Bon appetit.
25:00Bon appetit.
25:01We might be the only people having Thanksgiving dinner in France right now, but it feels good.
25:06Feels like a little piece of home.
25:08I couldn't be more grateful that we're all here together.
25:10Yeah.
25:12In the first year we were here in France, Halloween came around and we bought candy thinking people would come
25:17to the Chateau and trick-or-treat.
25:19We stood outside in the dark for two hours, not a single trick-or-treater.
25:24Yeah, that's very different here.
25:26It was so unfortunate we had to eat all of the candy.
25:30Do you like any French food, Sabrina?
25:32Mexican rice I like.
25:34Mexican rice?
25:35French food wouldn't quite be Mexican rice.
25:38It'd be more like croissants.
25:40I love that.
25:41You like macarons?
25:42I like macarons.
25:43How about escargot?
25:45What's that?
25:46Do you know what a snail is?
25:49Yeah.
25:49That's escargot.
25:50No, no.
25:51No, no, no, no.
25:52Well, thank you.
26:04We do need to figure out some kind of a railing for the mezzanine.
26:08And it just so happens that one of our neighbors is selling this antique iron railing.
26:14This has just been rusting away in this guy's yard.
26:21It's beautiful.
26:22It's a great find.
26:23But this is definitely going to be a lot of work, Ian.
26:27It's a diamond in the rough.
26:29A lot of rough.
26:31It's going to be good.
26:32It's going to be great.
26:33I just really wanted the library to be done before my dad and Sabrina leave.
26:35Yes.
26:36I was hoping you could help me lift it just onto here and then I can start cutting it down
26:40to size.
26:44One, two.
26:47Oh, okay.
26:51A little help?
26:57Fantastic.
26:57Thank you, guys.
26:59But we still have to bring this to the chateau and then into the mezzanine.
27:05You guys are going to be available for that, right?
27:19We have all the ornate pieces up and all the bookshelves are looking amazing.
27:24We need to wallpaper above the shelves and to create a secret door.
27:27But before that, we've got the primer on and now we get to start adding some color.
27:34Because we're using these antique frames, the wood does have different appearances and some of them were painted.
27:40And so the simplest answer is the color drench.
27:43So we're going to paint everything the same color.
27:45All the woodwork, the walls, the doors.
27:48This should make the room more cozy.
27:50And the end result is everything feels more connected and bespoke.
27:54Did you ever paint any libraries back home with your dad?
27:57No, mostly it was just houses.
28:00But that's how I bought my first car.
28:02I got that right after we first dated.
28:05I was like, if I would have just got this car like a month earlier, then Daphne wouldn't have had
28:12to pick me up every time we went on a date.
28:15What jobs did you have?
28:17I was setting up markets on the weekends and then I was a secretary after school.
28:25You know, when I think of painting, it does remind me of the hard work paying off and you have
28:30to earn what you want.
28:31And this kind of translates to the chateau because every time we take on a new project, once it's complete,
28:38we feel like we've earned a little bit more of this chateau.
28:42And piece by piece, I feel like we're earning it.
28:52Good?
28:52All right, good.
28:55I do feel like we have a duty to the world now that we have a chateau, which is to
29:01find every reason to put any secret door into anywhere we can.
29:10After building the secret door in the bathroom of the chateau, I've learned when you add too much weight, it
29:15can be difficult.
29:16It was a smart choice for us to just use a door because the other one is so heavy.
29:22I had to buy these like reinforced hinges.
29:25I mean, it was a great idea.
29:27A little clunky.
29:29I'm only slightly offended.
29:33With the library secret door, we went with a simpler design.
29:37We just got a regular door.
29:48What have we got?
29:50Part of this secret door is creating the illusion that it is part of the bookshelves.
29:55World history.
29:57Daphne found this really incredible company that makes decorative bookends.
30:02This is the monograph of the horny sponges.
30:05What?
30:06Horny sponges.
30:07Horned sponges. That must be what they're talking about.
30:11Yeah, that's probably it.
30:12Yeah.
30:13They are made out of resin, but then they're hand painted.
30:16And the best part is these books are super easy to attach.
30:20You just have to use some glue and then just pop them on there.
30:23That looks so cool.
30:25That looks real.
30:26Yeah.
30:29So we have some awesome fake books for our secret door.
30:32But this won't be a real library without real books.
30:36So I started looking at the local listings and I've actually found some people who live in our town.
30:41And they have a bunch of antique books for sale.
30:43So I'm going to see what they have.
30:44Hello.
30:46Are you for the books?
30:47Yes.
30:48Ian.
30:48Damien.
30:49Enchanté.
30:51Do you speak English maybe?
30:53Not at all.
30:55Okay.
30:55No problem.
30:58Do you have a lot of books?
31:01Yes.
31:01Do you want to see them?
31:02Of course.
31:03Of course.
31:06Wow.
31:07How many books have you?
31:09Of course.
31:10Two or three thousand.
31:11Thousand?
31:12Thousand?
31:12Thousand?
31:12Yes.
31:13It's perfect for us.
31:17Now we work for a library for the castle.
31:22You are in the castle of Lesini?
31:23Yes, that's it.
31:24Yes.
31:25You are next, it's practical.
31:26Yes, thank you.
31:28It's beautiful, it's perfect.
31:32In fact, all the books, with the cure...
31:38With the cuir?
31:39The cuir, it's perfect.
31:42In America, finding leather-bound books from the 1800s
31:45is not something you see every day,
31:47but in France, it is something that people have.
31:51It's good to make your choice to select.
31:53Okay.
31:53A mille de livres.
31:59Je vais appeler quand je sais c'est prêt.
32:02Okay, pas de problème.
32:04Merci beaucoup.
32:04Merci, mon courage.
32:06I did not expect to find a thousand antique books
32:10five minutes away from the château.
32:13Basically, the books are about 50 cents apiece.
32:16This is the history of France.
32:19That's Marie Antoinette.
32:23Daphne's going to be stoked when she sees these.
32:36Ooh.
32:38Look at that.
32:39It's perfect.
32:41It's perfect.
32:46Voilà.
32:47First one done.
32:49I love it.
32:51It's going to look so good.
32:59I cannot believe how many books you managed to find.
33:09This chandelier was actually just laying in the hangar.
33:12We think it's from the 1950s or 60s, but it will look beautiful in the library.
33:19It has these crystal vases.
33:26What happened?
33:32Do we have any more light bulbs?
33:34I'm just glad it was a bulb that broke and not one of the crystal vases, because then we'd have
33:39a real problem.
33:43Being away from Daphne, it is actually really hard to live so far from each other, but it's just really
33:52amazing how well she is doing with the château, and that she found a partner that wants to do the
33:57same thing as well.
34:00I'm so happy that we were able to finish this before you guys leave.
34:04That's great.
34:06I'm very curious to see what they came up with in the library.
34:11Right through here, Papa.
34:16Wow.
34:17Daphne is incredible.
34:19You like it?
34:20Yes, I love it.
34:34I need a minute to let it all sink in.
34:37It's really beautiful.
34:41This room always felt neglected.
34:43We referred to it as the pulley room for a long time.
34:46And now when you walk into that room, it's clearly a library.
34:51These beautiful bookshelves cover most of those pulleys.
34:55It feels really nice to give that room a purpose again.
34:57So where did you get all these amazing bookcases from?
35:01We actually had a bunch of wood in the hangar.
35:05And so we went through and we found all the pieces that looked a little rococo.
35:09Because it's all the same cocoa design.
35:12Rococo.
35:13My favorite is up there because you've got this like bat symbol thing going on.
35:17Dragon.
35:18Yeah, well, you got like these yelling fish on each end, which is really cool.
35:22Dolphins. Those are dolphins.
35:25So I love the colors.
35:26Not too dark.
35:28Just the right kind of darkness.
35:30It was really relaxed and calming.
35:33It was like a plain white plaster ceiling.
35:36We decided to check it out and see if there were some beautiful beams underneath.
35:45Just some 400-year-old hand-painted historical ceilings. No big deal.
35:50But there was one portion that didn't have anything nice.
35:53So Ian created a beautiful artwork of his own.
35:56It's beautiful.
35:57And of course, we have your bust, which I'm so proud of having in the library now.
36:08So you remember how we used to have two doors on this wall?
36:11This one is now secret.
36:13If you just give it a little push.
36:17Wow.
36:19So these books look quite realistic.
36:23We founded an incredible English company who specializes in faux books.
36:28It's really nice to be able to have a traditional library back in the Chateau.
36:32But it's also going to serve a much bigger purpose for us.
36:35Because Ian and I have realized that by creating more variety in the Chateau,
36:39we'll be able to get a lot more clients for photo shoots.
36:43We've created a space that is a business venture.
36:46But it's also a space that we're going to be able to enjoy.
36:49Well, so far, all the projects you guys have done are really impressive.
36:54So I believe this will be just another success.
36:57I'm proud.
36:59Thank you, Papa. That means a lot hearing it from you.
37:05Should we go get some Rina?
37:08A whole new room in the Chateau that you haven't seen before.
37:13Wow.
37:16Welcome to the library.
37:17What do you think?
37:19It's good.
37:20It's good?
37:22Sabrina, did you notice that all of these books have gold writing on them?
37:27Mm-hmm.
37:28Ian and I had learned that the gold gilding on the bindings of books was so that in the olden
37:34days,
37:34when they had their candles, they would be able to lift it up to the book and be able to
37:38read the titles more easily.
37:42The Fig Family Fables.
37:45What book is that?
37:47Since the military, Ian has gone by Fig, as that's the first three letters of his last name.
37:54Because all of the books are handmade, we were able to customize them.
37:58And I thought it would be really sweet if we created a book called The Fig Family Fables.
38:04That's adorable.
38:12Ian and I had budgeted $20,000 for the space, but we opened the mezzanine and there was a whole
38:18wall that needed to be rebuilt.
38:19So we ended up going over by about $4,000.
38:21But with how unique this space is, I do think that this room will be able to make its money
38:27back pretty quickly.
38:31You ready?
38:32Do you want to see?
38:35Wow.
38:48By adding the little mezzanine to the room, the whole space became a much more unique place.
38:56that's it this is a little writing area well this chair the fabric on it used to live in this
39:05room
39:06and it was on the walls it was really important to me to be able to get the library done
39:11before
39:11my dad and Sabrina left because I really wanted to be able to share this experience with them
39:19I think Papa's cheating I don't get to see them enough it is really hard to like
39:37I really wish they didn't have to go home tomorrow but I'm happy that when they leave that we have
39:45some
39:45memories that will be able to treasure until the next time we meet but the stepmother said it's no
39:55use you're not coming with us for you have no clothes and you don't know how to dance do you
40:03remember reading this story to me as a little girl oh yes I do with this she turned her back

41:11these joys are rotting dude
41:18I don't think she realizes how big of a job this is gonna be
41:26in the next chapters of our spellbinding story
41:29Ian
41:31won't thou live down their locks
41:34Daphne and Ian struggle to transform a cursed wreck
41:38this thing's not gonna fall is it
