00:00Welcome to Florida
00:02We're having a party
00:04Home to theme parks, golden tans
00:06and 400,000 Brits
00:08This one is the one with the view
00:10Wow
00:10Who've made the Sunshine State their new home
00:14I feel blessed every single day
00:16I'm living the American dream
00:17I definitely am
00:18They've swapped drizzly winters and gas bills
00:21for new careers and seemingly
00:23endless fun in the sun
00:242
00:251
00:28Get it right and life in Florida
00:30can be like a dream come true
00:32I get to drive a convertible, it's fabulous
00:35But getting here and staying here
00:37takes hard work
00:38Good job, good job, keep it going team
00:40Grit
00:42And determination
00:44The glamorous side of living in Florida
00:46These are the Brits who've made their own
00:48Escape to Florida
00:54Today on Escape to Florida
00:56This never fails ever
00:58Liverpool born Lee has printer problems
01:00ahead of his big quiz night
01:03Why is it not working?
01:04Oh, what a time
01:07Will it be love all for Hertfordshire couple Peter and Judy
01:10As they take on a pickleball tournament
01:13No!
01:15And Londoner Lynn puts on a British themed bash
01:18I'm all ready to party
01:19Let's get it on
01:27Florida's Gulf Coast is a British holiday hotspot
01:30And the small city of South Pasadena
01:32Is home to Liverpool born Lee
01:34Who moved to the Sunshine State 22 years ago
01:37And now runs a pub
01:41That'll do
01:44My ex-wife's mum married an American guy
01:47And they lived here
01:48So we come over a few times to visit
01:50And we just fell in love with the place
01:52They speak our language, it's sunny
01:53So it just up sticks and moved
01:58Lee and three of his children
02:00Connor, who was born in the UK
02:02And Edie and Shea
02:03Now live in the Sunshine State
02:06Hey Sean, I'm just gonna go and put the kegs out
02:09I'm proud of the kids for different reasons
02:10Connor and Edie work at the pub
02:12And I'm hoping Shea will do a little bit
02:13So he can get a bit of spending money
02:14When he goes through high school
02:16I'm fortunate that I can spend a lot of time with them
02:20And I wouldn't give it up for anything
02:22Oh, these things are heavy
02:25Lee left his software engineer job in 2008
02:28To swap careers and run the horse and jockey British pub
02:32I bought the pub because I used to go there
02:34And the lady who owned it then
02:35She tried to sell it to me
02:36And I was like, no, I don't want a pub
02:38But then I think that seed was planted
02:40It's warm today, isn't it?
02:42It really is
02:43Lee has worked hard to make the pub a successful family business
02:47For him, his new wife Taryn and his kids
02:51Perfect, right there is perfect
02:53Thank you sir
02:55And his son Connor is keen to follow in his footsteps
02:58I would love to be the manager of the pub
03:00It's great work with my dad
03:01You learn a lot from him
03:02And I'm very happy that I get to see him every day
03:07It's Tuesday, one of the busiest nights of the week
03:10We're just getting ready for tonight
03:11We've got the pub quiz
03:13We've got quite a few people coming
03:15We'll probably sell like two or three hundred pints
03:17Maybe more
03:18Good quiz means more beer sold
03:20More people having a good time
03:21More people want to come back
03:22The book's full tonight some
03:23Yeah
03:23Have we got the backups all lined up in the keg cooler?
03:27Yeah, we've got to get a backup of Guinness and Kilkenny in there
03:30Lee has taken on the role of quiz host in the past
03:33Which didn't go down too well with his customers
03:35I don't have a filter
03:37So I just say whatever I think
03:38I don't mean to offend anybody
03:40But I've got a really good habit of doing it
03:41So I just kind of stepped away from it
03:44This evening he's taking a gamble on someone new
03:47Who has sent sample questions to see if she's right for the job
03:51All right, so when Erica sent me the questions over
03:53Tonight the quiz master will be a young girl called Erica
03:57She's a law student
03:57I was in the pub one night doing trivia
03:59And she just said she wanted to give her a go
04:01We'll see
04:02Public speaking is pretty intimidating at first
04:05I've had a couple of people who said they'd do it
04:07They turned up and then they get the cold sweats
04:09And they can't do it and I have to jump in
04:10All right, Erica wants to know if they're too hard
04:12Question number one
04:14This soda originated in the 1940s
04:16As a mixer for whiskey in the state of Tennessee
04:21That means he doesn't know
04:22Ginger ale
04:23That's a good idea
04:24Mountain Dew
04:26Okay, this soda was created in Germany during World War II
04:29Due to the ingredients
04:30Fanta
04:32This soda was created in Germany during World War II
04:35Due to ingredient shortages of Coca-Cola
04:39And you're saying Fanta?
04:40Yeah
04:41It was?
04:42Yeah
04:42Quiz master is really important
04:44Because you get some quiz masters and they don't engage
04:46A good quiz master is something somebody's going to come back for
04:49This famous John holds the world record for over 650 make a wish wishes granted
04:55John Cena
04:56How did you know that?
04:58This is Mr..
04:59Make a wish
05:00Yeah
05:00Well done
05:01You think the questions are too hard?
05:03No
05:03Well if you've got a few of them
05:05The questions have passed the Lee and Connor test
05:08But will they go down just as well with the regulars?
05:18On the other side of Florida on the Atlantic shoreline is the state's most affordable city Palm Coast home to
05:25Hertfordshire couple Peter and Judy
05:27Peter
05:28Yeah
05:29I wondered if you could get some of your golf equipment
05:31Alright, I'll grab my gear and we'll crack on I guess
05:34Alright, brilliant
05:36Peter worked as a golf pro in the UK for 28 years before moving to the Sunshine State two years
05:43ago because of his strong connections to Florida
05:46I came out here in 1984 on a golf scholarship so I kind of know Florida pretty well
05:5220 years later I was retiring you were about to change jobs Olivia our daughter was at university and it
06:03just seemed like it was right
06:04See that nice A shape on your legs
06:06Peter now teaches high-end clients how to improve their game working fewer hours and earning more than he did
06:12at home
06:13I feel that club face is aiming more left at impact
06:18I love working I've got a great job I'm very lucky I'm very blessed to do something that I love
06:24Every time I go back home someone says what's that loud thud and they go oh there's Peter Cherry landing
06:28on his feet again
06:30Let me just get my bag ready see what I need
06:34After a 40-year career Judy retired from her high-powered HR job when they left the UK
06:39I was the director for a global recruitment firm
06:44The sorts of organizations that I would have been on site would have been Goldman Sachs, UBS, Virgin Media
06:51And it was a really hardcore tough tough job
06:56I will take all of these paddles with me today and I'll practice and see which one I like the
07:02best
07:03Judy's worked hard in fairness all her life she's had some stressful jobs
07:07She is absolutely loving retirement
07:09But she's not putting her feet up
07:12A few balls great
07:15She's playing pickleball the sport that's booming in both the UK and stateside
07:19Combining elements of tennis badminton and table tennis
07:24Hang on what else am I missing let me see oh yeah I need some white like these are brilliant
07:31Pickleball was a sport I'd never heard of I came across it because I wanted to meet people
07:36And I wanted to have a reason to kind of get up and go in the morning
07:40And I fell in love with it as soon as I started playing
07:42Yeah, I think I have got everything
07:46Today I'm going into a pickleball tournament
07:49I'm actually scared because this isn't the level I play at
07:53I play with my friends but this is going to be serious and I'm nervous
07:58Peter's coming along and we are going to see whether or not he can improve my game before I play
08:03And just use some of the tools that he uses to improve someone's golf game
08:07But it can't be that different can it?
08:09Right you ready Jude?
08:10Yeah I'm here I'm all good to go
08:12Alright shall we do it?
08:13Let's do it
08:14Peter gets paid big bucks to help his clients improve their game
08:19Now he needs to do the same for Judy
08:21So she can hold her own in her first competitive tournament
08:32Spanning three counties across central Florida
08:35Dozens of separate villages make up The Villages
08:39The largest retirement community in the world
08:42And home to over 150,000 people
08:45Including 74 year old Londoner Lynn
08:49The Villages is such a popular place now
08:52It's expanding more and more
08:54It's humongous
08:55There's so many houses
08:59So many residents
09:01Lynn works as an estate agent and is often out buying and selling houses
09:06So a golf buggy is a must
09:08And there's people in the villages that do not own a car
09:12Only a golf car
09:15This unique community is 57 square miles
09:19And has three main town squares
09:21Over 100 recreation centres
09:23As well as shops, restaurants and entertainment
09:25We've got any sport you can think of
09:29Plus there's over 3600 different clubs
09:35Quilting, jam making
09:39On top of the cost of their house
09:41Residents pay $199 a month to access the amenities
09:45Specifically designed with the over 55s in mind
09:49Every possible need of these active retirees
09:52Has been taken into account
09:56There's a defibrillator on the corner of the street
09:58Because every neighbourhood has to have one
10:01So I learnt how to use it
10:03And I'm here for anybody having a heart attack
10:08These are my two beautiful cats
10:12Lynn has lived in Florida now for 44 years
10:15I worked on the cruise ships
10:17And it brought me to Fort Lauderdale, Florida
10:20After four years on the ships
10:23A friend and I decided to come to Florida
10:25I had my own cleaning service
10:27I had my own nail business for 13 years
10:31And then finally got into real estate
10:33That I've been doing for 24 years
10:35And I just absolutely love it
10:36You want treats?
10:38Julie, who loves to eat
10:41As you can see, she's a well-rounded cat
10:45Aside from cats, Julie and Pip
10:47Lynn currently lives alone
10:48And a priority is expanding her social circle
10:52All right, hang on
10:54I grew up in pubs in London
10:56So I love to socialise
10:59I'm a very big party girl
11:02But here they do things a little differently to Blighty
11:06Driveway parties are huge in the villages
11:10People come from all over in their carts
11:13And they bring their drinks
11:16They bring a dish
11:17And it could be 200 people there
11:19And everybody gets to know each other
11:22To help her meet more of her neighbours
11:23Lynn's hosting her own driveway party
11:26And has posted an open invitation
11:28To the entire neighbourhood
11:30I think I'm going to put one of the tents
11:35That end
11:36And maybe one right there
11:38Today I'm going to set up a really big party
11:42The biggest party I've ever done
11:44My friends are coming over to help me set up long tables
11:47All around the garage
11:49And this place will just be chock-a-block with food
11:53These are my British friends
11:55We're not friends
11:57The brick community here may be small
12:00But Lynn's found some fellow expats
12:02Lee and wife Helen
12:03Who live on the next street
12:06Hey honey
12:07Hello
12:08And along with some of Lynn's other American friends and neighbours
12:11They've come to help her set up
12:14I've got flags and streamers and other flags
12:20All to decorate around the house to make it festive
12:24I'm doing a British theme
12:26Just because I'm British
12:28And I thought that would be fun
12:30So it's really going to be quite an event
12:33This is probably as many who are coming to help I think
12:38I don't really know how many are coming
12:40It could be well over 200
12:43Alright, let's get to work and get this done
12:47Have I bitten off more than I can chew?
12:49Is my thought
13:03In South Pasadena, on Florida's Gulf Coast
13:06British bar owner Lee from Liverpool
13:09And son Connor are getting ready for tonight's quiz
13:12And their new quiz host
13:14We do a daily special every week
13:16And Tuesday has been currying a pint since I've worked here
13:19Which is about 10 years
13:20Traditional pub grub is at the heart of the horse and jockey's menu
13:24We've got cottage pie
13:26We sell chicken and mushroom pie
13:27Steak and ale pie
13:28Our most popular item by a long way is fish and chips
13:31There was one instance when Hurricane Irma came through in 2017
13:35We were up for four hours
13:37And myself and a dishwasher made 272 fish and chips in those four hours
13:42And we ran out of fish
13:43To keep standards up, Lee likes to test out the specials with Chef Sidney
13:52That's good
13:54That's really good
13:55I love the quality of our food
13:56There's nothing on the menu that I wouldn't eat
13:58And I am the fussiest guy you'll need
14:00Chicken mushroom is delicious
14:02Creamy, good
14:04Chicken madras, just enough heat
14:06It's perfect
14:06Yeah, definitely a burger, the job testing the food
14:15As most of us customers are American, Lee puts on special deals to encourage them to try popular British cuisine
14:22Tonight we do a free pint with a curry
14:24So people are like, oh, let's try the curry
14:26Americans don't really understand curry
14:28They have a preconception of what it is
14:31Now a lot of them will try it and they're like, oh, I actually like curry
14:35My favourite dish is the cottage pie
14:37Last night we had chicken wings
14:39Tonight we're going to have pizza
14:41Local Brits like Pauline from Newcastle also come to enjoy a taste of home
14:46I've got to have my roast, my Yorkshire pudding and gravy
14:50Another way Lee's brought a slice of Blighty to his bar is a good old British icon
14:55That phone box was a birthday present from my dad
14:58People love the phone box, people take photographs in it, around it all the time
15:03But with over 100 people expected this evening, many of them regular quizzers
15:08It's the furnishings inside that Connor and fellow bartender Jess need to get right
15:14Are we going to put them two together?
15:17Yeah
15:17We are setting the tables up for trivia night
15:20We're going to accommodate the guests, make sure everyone's together and everyone's teams paired up right
15:24If not, they'll all be annoyed and complain
15:27We don't want that
15:28Eight of this one
15:32It gets pretty busy, it gets wild really
15:35People get very competitive with their teams too
15:38So it's really fun
15:40Hey buddy, how you doing?
15:41Lee, good
15:42Eric's been coming to the horse and jockey British bar for the last 13 years
15:46And has even had his own turn at hosting the quiz
15:49Tonight we've got a girl called Erica
15:51Erica
15:52She sent me the questions, we've tested them
15:53What advice would you give her?
15:55Well, study her answers, be prepared
15:58Yeah
15:58Vary her vocal tones so she can hold that audience
16:02Yeah
16:02Make eye contact, break away
16:04Right
16:05And just go for it
16:06I'll be sure to tell her
16:08And have a beard
16:10Yeah, there you go
16:12From the food and the position of the tables
16:14To the quiz host having confidence with the crowd
16:16Lee needs everything to come together to please all of his customers tonight
16:27Three hours away on Florida's Atlantic seaboard
16:31In the city of Palm Coast
16:33Everything is coming together for Hertfordshire couple Peter and Judy
16:37At Judy's pickleball tournament
16:40Good morning
16:41Morning
16:43We have a tournament going on for ladies
16:46It's probably one of the scariest things I've ever done
16:49Because this is not a level I'm used to playing at
16:52We're going to warm up
16:53Peter's going to come and help me
16:56After raising their daughter Olivia
16:58And a high-flying 40-year career
17:00Judy's now spending a lot of her retirement playing her new favourite sport
17:04Pickleball
17:06Morning girls
17:09Morning, morning
17:10The court's about half the size of a tennis court
17:13You use a paddle bigger than a ping pong paddle
17:16And smaller than a tennis racket
17:18And you use a wiffle ball
17:20And the aim basically is just to hit that ball over that net
17:24And get it when it comes back to you hit it again
17:26But keep it within the lines
17:27Similar to tennis
17:29To help Judy warm up pre-tournament
17:31Our fellow pickleballers turned friends Mary and Rochelle
17:35Plus British pal Sue
17:37I'm scared of the 80-year-olds that play every day
17:40The 80-year-olds that play every day
17:42That can't hardly walk
17:43But my god get them on the pickleball court
17:45And they're vicious
17:47As a golf professional, Peter's used to helping clients to up their game
17:51But supporting wife Judy is serious business
17:55Jude, come on, we're going to do some data
17:57Are we?
17:58Yep, we've got the flight scope
17:59All right, okay
18:00This nifty bit of kit is usually used to track the path of a golf ball with radar technology
18:07Nice
18:11If you can serve it a little bit lower
18:13A little bit more down here
18:14That way, straight down the line
18:18Nice
18:19Look at that, it's working already
18:21Normally, obviously I use this for the golf
18:23But this kind of stuff was originally designed to pick up missiles on warships
18:27So pretty sure it can pick up a pickleball in a ladies tournament
18:30So we want to hit it more that way, see that?
18:33Like that
18:34Like that
18:34That's it
18:36Nice
18:37Look at the spin on that
18:39People who know, come to their pro
18:40That's what I'm telling you
18:42People who know, come to their pro
18:45Your game's good, it's in a good place
18:47Keep that serve deep
18:48Yes
18:49Yeah
18:49And your hair looks great by the way
18:51So you're in a good place
18:54We always go and support each other in tournaments
18:57And he's brilliant on the sideline
18:59You encourage your partner
19:01You're their cheerleader
19:02And he does a brilliant job of that
19:06With six games to play, Judy's court and partners are selected at random
19:11Your name? Judy Cherry
19:12OK, gotcha
19:14And there's one person here who knows Judy more than most
19:18I have a friend, Sue
19:20And she has been a bit of a life saver for me
19:23In terms of having a British friend
19:25How long have we known each other now?
19:27Oh my god
19:2815, 16 years
19:30We met in London
19:31Yep
19:32When we both worked for the same company
19:33Sue decided, didn't you?
19:35You've had enough of London
19:36Had enough of London
19:37I live in New Jersey
19:38So we got our green card
19:39We came down here to Florida
19:41And then you enjoyed all this fun
19:43And now what's happening?
19:44Oh, I will be buying a house in Florida
19:48So you'll be up the road for me
19:49Woo!
19:52For the first match of the tournament, Judy's paired with British pal Sue
19:56Nice to meet you
19:57Sue, Sue
19:58Christy
19:58Hello, Christy
19:59Hello
20:01And they're up against the best of the best
20:03Ros, the little old one is
20:05She finished in the top five
20:08They're in leagues
20:09Are we all ready?
20:10Come on, Jude
20:11Unleash hell
20:15So rules of Pickleball are pretty much
20:17First team to score 11
20:19You score only when you are serving
20:221-0-2
20:24The most difficult part is really the scoring
20:28Because they're all kind of over 50
20:298-1-8-1
20:32Oh, no
20:33You look round and you go
20:35Who just served?
20:36And you look round and you see all four people and go
20:37I don't know
20:39Unlucky
20:40That was really good play
20:41Well played
20:42Well played
20:43Well played
20:45One down and the first loss for Judy
20:47For game two, she's got Sue again
20:49But this time they're up against close pals
20:51Mary and Rochelle
20:54Mary, they're going down
20:55Oh, this is going to be tricky
21:00This is America's fastest growing sport
21:02They can't build courts fast enough
21:03Oh!
21:05Was it out?
21:06Just out, I think
21:07I'm not a sporty person
21:08I am that person at school that never got picked for a team
21:11What I really like about Pickleball above other sports
21:15Is the speed of it
21:15It's happening, it's line
21:17It's, yeah, come on, we can do it
21:20No!
21:21Game
21:22Game, well played
21:24Two games, two losses for Judy Cherry
21:26But, it won't be for long
21:29Trust me, I'm coming back
21:31Peter's coaching may not have helped her win so far
21:34But with four games to go, Judy's still got a chance to turn things around
21:45In the world's largest retirement community, The Villages in Central Florida
21:50The pressure is also on 74-year-old estate agent Lynn from London
21:55As she prepares to host her big British-themed bash
21:59This is not all that heavy
22:01I mean, a little bit, but...
22:04Luckily, British pals Helen and Lee and her American friends are helping her set up
22:11Come on, real men don't need instructions
22:13If anybody needs water, just holler
22:19I live in one of the smaller homes, because it's just me
22:23What I love about this community is that I've got so many good friends here
22:27Who are willing to share my burden just to help me
22:31Lynn wants to expand her friendship circle
22:35So she sent out an open invitation to her entire neighbourhood
22:39And she's no idea how many are actually coming
22:43There's probably gonna be over 200 people
22:47It's about the biggest party I've had
22:51Three should go along there, because I measured it
22:53So three, we should get in there
22:55There's quite a lot to do
22:58While fellow Brit Helen is sorting the decorations
23:01It'd be the smallest two people doing it, isn't it?
23:05Is that high enough?
23:08Helen's husband Lee from Devon is getting the tents up
23:11To give her guests much needed shade
23:14Have you got enough friends to fill this tent?
23:16Yes
23:17On average, I should imagine there's probably a street party
23:20Once a month, sometimes twice a month
23:22Right, go
23:23Straight down
23:25For me, life in the villages is about waking up every morning
23:28It's a lovely sunny day, you can choose one of 3,000 activities to do
23:33From over 100 swimming pools to its 200 plus pickleball courts
23:37The active retiree residents make the most of its facilities
23:42It's definitely a Disney World for seniors
23:44Definitely brilliant, because there's no kids
23:46And if these can stretch over three tables, that'd be great
23:50That'd be, yeah
23:50That'd be awesome
23:55Sharon, who lives six doors down, has met some good friends at gatherings just like this
24:00People have driveway potties all the time
24:02It's a way to get to know each other, because there's so many homes
24:06Oh, I can't reach that though
24:07It's wonderful
24:08And it keeps us all young
24:12There are currently 70,000 homes in Counting
24:15On a site bigger than Manchester
24:17Which typically go for between $240,000 and $3 million
24:23Yep, that's it
24:24That's fine
24:25Oh, yeah, at least it's some shade, right
24:29I've really got to say thanks to you all guys
24:31You always rally round and I really, really appreciate you
24:34All my neighbours are my friends
24:36I only have to sneeze and I've got a bowl of chicken soup here
24:40Come back later in your frocks and your costumes
24:45And we can party
24:47We're making fun
24:49But Lyn can't relax yet
24:51She's got to cater for what could be 200 plus people
24:55So she needs to get cracking
24:57Having three freezers
24:59I never know where I've put anything
25:16In South Pasadena, on Central Florida's West Coast, it's less than an hour until the quiz starts at the Horse
25:23& Jockey British Bar for Lee from Liverpool
25:25Just getting ready for them, making sure the place is clean
25:28You have that rush when everybody turns up at once, which is what everybody always does
25:33A successful quiz means more drinks sold and more returning customers
25:37And with people now pouring in, Lee and his son Connor have been joined by daughter Edie to help things
25:43run smoothly
25:44I'm so excited for Quiz Night
25:46There's a lot of people here
25:48When I'm a server you make a lot of tips
25:50There's so many things that brings in the customers, Quiz Night's definitely one of the top ones
25:55It's fun
25:56Everyone's all upbeat, everyone's happy and it's always a good time
26:01And tonight, there's added pressure with a new Quiz Host, Erica
26:06Hey Lee
26:08Lee's seen others try and fail under the stress before, so he wants to make sure she's ready
26:14Have you done any public speaking before?
26:18Um...
26:18I mean, not like this
26:21It actually is quite difficult
26:22So, um, we just...
26:25Don't rush anything
26:27We had a guy in here called Eric actually, he did the quiz a few times
26:30And he said a couple of things
26:32You know, eye contact with a few people
26:34Read the question at a comfortable pace
26:37People like to be able to answer like 75% of the questions
26:41You know, if it gets a little bit harder than that, fine
26:43But when you start getting down to like people getting, you know, 15 out of 40
26:47Then it's like, it's too hard for them, there's no fun
26:50Relax, enjoy it
26:51Yeah, if you need any help, just shout out
26:53All right
26:55Best case scenario would be, everybody has a lot of fun
26:59Worst case scenario is, they say these questions are not good
27:02Hey Connor, sorry, do you have a bunch of pens I can...
27:05I don't
27:06Pass out to people
27:08You know, it does get a bit intimidating sometimes
27:10Especially when you've got a full roof, pretty full tonight
27:12So, if something she engages, she'll be fine
27:15It's less than half an hour to the quiz, and the pub is packed
27:19But former software engineer Lee is having IT issues
27:23It's just doing an update, but it's just, it's not doing it
27:27The laptop connected to the printer isn't working
27:29And he needs to print the picture round sheets for the quiz
27:33It was a four minute update, that's taken about 25 minutes
27:36It probably is a lot of people's dreams to own a pub
27:39But then you realise it's not as easy as you think it is
27:43It's like a little baby, you know, you turn your back and there's all kinds of problems
27:48Why is it not working? Oh ho ho ho, what a time!
27:52But once that's fixed, he still can't print anything
27:55This never fails, ever
27:59The clock is ticking, the tables are full and Erica's ready to begin
28:03Lee needs to put his IT skills to good use and save the quiz before it's even begun
28:15The stakes are also high over on Palm Coast
28:18One of Florida's newest cities on the other side of the state
28:22Expat Judy is in a fierce competition to be pickleball champ
28:26With husband Peter cheering her on
28:29Come on, bring it on
28:31Played by over 36 million people in North America alone
28:35The pickleball phenomenon is sweeping the globe
28:39I really love the fact that I was able to move very quickly from not having a clue
28:46To actually able to play the game
28:49No!
28:51Which has given former recruitment consultant Judy a fun new hobby
28:55And community of friends in her retirement
28:58These people have now become my American best friends
29:03Out, set game
29:04A network which has been so important to Judy in Florida
29:0811-1, woo!
29:12I'm not a loser after all
29:14Peter's working every day
29:15So being able to build a community and a friendship group here has been absolutely vital
29:21So we're halfway through the tournament
29:23I've played three matches, lost 2-1-1
29:25Now I'm feeling really positive
29:27But that changes when Judy loses her next two games
29:33It's the worst game we've played
29:38Oh, jeez!
29:39Come on, babe, last game
29:41For her sixth and final match, Judy's playing for last place of the tournament
29:46And this time she's up against fellow Brits, Sue
29:52Go, Judy! You got this! Woo!
30:01Oh, I can't get it!
30:02Unlucky
30:03Alright, well played, ladies
30:05Woo!
30:07I'm just putting it out there, that means I came last in the whole of the tournament
30:12Anyway, it is what it is! I still love it!
30:15She did really well today
30:17Just got up against a couple of really good players
30:19You know, nothing that a pina colada won't fit
30:21Speaking of which, Judy's already making plans to do just that with her new community of Florida pals
30:28So girls, we're going to do our pickleball party at the house
30:33And two o'clock? Sound all right?
30:35Yeah, that works
30:36I'm in! In love, Flynn!
30:37We'll be there!
30:38We'll be there!
30:39I'm done!
30:39Life in Florida ain't that bad
30:45We're going to have a pickleball party! Woo!
30:49We've got plenty of booze here, there, everywhere
30:52And we've got plenty of snacks
30:55For the whole of my life, I have loved hosting
30:58Theming it up, everyone coming dressed in a certain attire
31:02Good morning, Gabrielle, this is Peter Cherry calling from Bird Golf Academy
31:08Peter may be back at work, organising upcoming golf lessons
31:11But he has another important job
31:14Right
31:15Think party, don't think pickleball, right?
31:18That one
31:18Absolutely love that
31:20Then there's this one, which is like that little wraparound dress thing
31:23Like that
31:24And then obviously this one, which I will look like I'm playing pickleball
31:28Playing pickleball
31:29I love the little harlequin one
31:31OK, that's been it, it's been chosen
31:35There's no time to waste, as our pals are arriving in just over an hour
31:39And Judy still needs to pick up supplies for a surprise treat she has in store for them
31:52In central Florida, in the over 55s community of the villages
31:5874-year-old single Londoner Lynn is also about to host a party so she can bond with her new
32:04community
32:05There's nothing more British than a sausage roll, eh?
32:08It's the biggest bash she's ever thrown and she's determined to give the guests a real taste of Britain
32:15I can't live without my Oxo and my Bisto
32:19I love my British food still, you can take the girl out of London but you can't take the food
32:24out of the girl
32:26With 200 plus people expected, that's a lot of mouths to feed
32:31Yeah
32:33I don't know if I need one or two of these, it's a pretty big thing
32:37Pressure's on a little bit for me to get all this cooked
32:39Because I'm doing five or six of these cottage pies
32:43Hopefully, there'll be enough of the iconic British dish to give all the guests a bite of blighting
32:48It's a big undertaking to get all this food prepared and for this many coming
32:53It might be a bit too full, huh?
32:56Well, I'm short
32:58I'm short on...
32:59I'm big pots
33:01Well, it's not every day you need six cottage pies worth of spuds
33:05But the beauty of being close to your neighbours
33:07Frankie!
33:09Lovely
33:11That's exactly what I need
33:13You're a lifesaver
33:15I'll see you later
33:17Once all the potatoes are boiled, Lyn's other neighbours, Sue and Charlie, get mashing
33:25Mmm, perfect
33:26OK, here we go
33:28While she channels some good old British girl power
33:32The scaffolding up
33:35When I sent out the invite, I've asked them to wear British clothing
33:40I bought my costume online and I'm hoping that, you know, 50 other people haven't ordered the same thing
33:48I'm all ready to party
33:50Let's get it on
33:50So, what do you wear to a British theme bash?
33:53Oh, Helen, we both had the same idea
33:57You look great though
33:58And you
33:59But, with less than an hour until the guests are due
34:02Ginger Spice, aka British pal Helen, helps finish off the pies
34:08As Sue tries to prevent a cottage pie crisis
34:14Lyn has decided to make six cottage pies, which she cannot fit in her oven
34:19So, I'm taking two to my home right now
34:22OK, number two
34:23And off I go, in the oven, are the pies
34:28As Lyn's hoping to bring a slice of Britain to her Florida community
34:32She needs this classic British cuisine to be ready and hopefully go down a treat
34:37With a little help from her friends
34:57In Palm Coast, Brit Judy has less than an hour before her new pickleball pals arrive
35:02For her post-tournament party, and she's picking up supplies
35:07I'm party food ready
35:09We got some nice crispy chicken
35:12We got some salsa, some hummus
35:15I think we're fully loaded
35:19I know it's a real cliché and they say loads of people retire here
35:23But I'm genuinely so grateful that Peter's got this job out here and we're able to have this lifestyle
35:29Good afternoon, this is Peter Cherry here
35:32While golf pro husband Peter's busy booking in new clients
35:35Judy's the hostess with the mostess, making a surprise pickleball themed cocktail
35:42Add gin, add vodka, muddle the cucumber and mint and basil, add simple syrup
35:47Pickle brine, well, pickle juice, same thing
35:52A taste
35:56Right, ready?
36:08It's got potential
36:10I would say more vodka
36:12Finished off with a pickleball paddle garnish, just in time for Rochelle
36:17Oh, hello! How you doing?
36:20And their other friend Sharon to arrive
36:22Keep lifting, keep lifting
36:24Keep lifting
36:26Soon followed by the rest of the gang, including British pal Sue
36:30Mary!
36:32And after today's tough defeat, Peter has a special treat for Judy
36:37I know you all tried really hard today and you all put in tremendous effort
36:41But for my darling wife, who didn't have the best state in the world
36:47Oh!
36:48But is always fun and always makes it a laugh
36:52Here's a little tiara
36:56Because you're my prickleball princess
36:58When Peter came out with the crown, that was so cute, I really didn't expect that
37:04With everyone gathered, Judy can finally serve her bespoke themed booze
37:09I just wanted to say thank you so much for being my dear friends
37:13I mean, pickleball brought us together
37:16We don't just do that, we go out, we have fun, we go places
37:19I'm just, I'm getting choked up
37:22But anyway, this is your pickleball smash
37:28So, dink!
37:30Dink!
37:34You have to have a reason to get up in the morning when you've retired
37:36And I didn't realise how important pickleball was going to be in my life
37:40Not only am I playing something that I enjoy so much
37:43But these people have become my friends
37:45And I wouldn't be here without them
37:46I'm sure I would have gone home if I didn't have those friends here
37:50Woah!
37:52Woah!
38:00At the Horse and Jockey British Bar in South Pasadena
38:04After some IT issues, Lee from Liverpool has managed to get his pub's printer working
38:09Just not very well
38:11I'm in a bit of a crisis mode here
38:13Processing here, just doing it very slowly
38:17New quiz host Erica needs to hand out the picture round sheets for the quiz to all the tables
38:21Before she starts in ten minutes
38:27This printer is so slow
38:31But this time, the problem's not the tech
38:34It was user error, it was me being stupid
38:37I thought I'd press 15, but I'd just press 1
38:40And, well, it's the 15
38:43So they're a bit dark, but it just makes it harder
38:46OK!
38:48Erica's debut may not have got off to the smoothest start
38:51And we have a team over here
38:53But she's making the most of it, working the room
38:56Hi guys, trivia over here?
38:58OK, so we've got a new quiz master tonight
39:01A young girl called Erica
39:05Here we go, it's going to be TV show characters on the front
39:08A strong quiz brings in more money and repeat customers
39:12So it's vital that Erica gets it right
39:14As Lee has had experience of quiz hosts bottling it at the last minute
39:18Are we ready to go, Lee?
39:20You go whenever you want
39:21But Erica is not backing down from the challenge
39:24Just yet, anyway
39:26You ready to do some trivia?
39:29All right, so this first category might be a little tough
39:33We'll see how it goes
39:34Preparing the questions is the hardest part of doing the quiz
39:37Sometimes it can sit you all day
39:40First question!
39:41This soda originated in the 1940s as a mixer for whiskey in the state of Tennessee
39:51With a bottle of wine for the winners up for grabs, the teams are taking it very seriously
39:57I don't know if we're going to win, but we're hopeful
39:59Wouldn't mind a bottle of wine
40:02What fiery demon does Gandalf battle in the minds of Moria during the Lord of the Rings' first movie, Fellowship
40:11of the Rings?
40:12No booze!
40:15We were doing really well and then we realised that there was an age around
40:20Meanwhile Connor and the bar staff are keeping the drinks flowing
40:23So Connor will make any drink that we want and Connor makes an amazing hot smell
40:29Connor is widely regarded in the pub as the best mixologist
40:35Everybody loves his cocktails
40:37Final question
40:38All right
40:41This 1996 holiday toy craze caused such a shopping frenzy
40:49That a Walmart employee suffered a broken rib and a concussion being trampled by shoppers
40:55After 39 questions, it's time to see how everyone got on
41:00It was pretty good, you know, we probably got one right
41:03Number 26 was which US president is in the Wrestling Hall of Fame?
41:08That's Abraham Lincoln
41:10I've had so much fun, so much fun
41:12I'm coming back, coming back, I'm bringing my friends
41:15And Erika has made it to the end of our first ever quiz
41:20The very last question, which was the holiday toy that resulted in arrests
41:25Walmart employee being trampled, nearly to death
41:28Was of course, tickle me Elmo
41:33I would love to hear feedback and I would love to try to make the questions easier, harder, whatever people
41:39want
41:39I would love to do it again
41:42Two teams are joint first with 35 out of 39
41:45Oh, I've won!
41:48And a third team are also getting a prize for best team name
41:51Five Lions, Londoners Donna and Dan
41:54We're the winners!
41:56Woo!
41:57Come on, you spare!
42:00Come on, you irons, irons, irons
42:02We have a round of applause for Erika, please
42:04I thought she did a fabulous job
42:08Drive safe, we'll see you next week guys, thank you!
42:12The whole night seems to have gone down well
42:14With around 230 pints sold and 80 cocktails
42:17Keeping all the staff on their toes, including Lee's son Connor
42:22It was really busy, everyone was happy
42:25Didn't have any complaints, food was good, drinks were good, everyone was smiling
42:30Thank you
42:32Today was a success
42:34Erica did really well, I'm really happy
42:36And we took a lot of money, which is ultimately what you want to do
42:49In the over 55s community of the villages in central Florida, Lynn from London is also hoping her British themed
42:57Knees Up is a huge success
43:00Hello, how are you?
43:01Hello, how are you?
43:03Good, good
43:04As she lives on her own, Lynn wants to get to know more of her neighbours
43:08And luckily, some new people have showed up already
43:12Hello, how are you honey?
43:14Good, let me introduce you to my sister-in-law
43:16She lives here too
43:17Lynn asked guests to dress up for the theme, and it turns out, grey minds think alike
43:23It's lovely to see you, but oh my goodness, we've got the same dress
43:27Yeah
43:30I was going to do a prize for the best costume
43:33But the majority of us have showed up in the same costume
43:37As you can tell, the Americans have a very limited view of British
43:40It's normally ginger spice, by the Union Jack dresses
43:43Beatles
43:45My costume is Paul, from the Beatles, of course
43:49Of course
43:50Cheers
43:52Lynn's preparing a spread fit for royalty, with a little help from her friends
43:56Including Devonshire pal Helen, aka Ginger Spice
44:00I'm just losing cream everywhere
44:02I think Gerry should stick to singing, not cooking
44:05Thankfully, the cottage pies are all back and ready to serve
44:08But feeding what could be around 200 people can be very stressful
44:13Everybody keeps calling me out here
44:15I'm being pulled in quite a few directions, because everybody wants my input or help
44:20And so, it's getting a little hairy
44:23I just hope I've done enough
44:26Excuse me, you can all go and get food whenever you want to in the garage
44:31So what does everyone think of the cottage pies?
44:35Oh yes, very nice
44:36Cottage pie was amazing
44:39Lynn put a lot of effort into this party
44:41She's been setting up for days, making sure the menu was right
44:44Hello
44:46You are?
44:47Jane, I'm Lynn
44:49The scorching Florida heat hasn't stopped people partying
44:53And Lynn's plan to meet new people has really worked out
44:57Hi Chrissy and Mike, I'm Lynn
44:59Nice to meet you
45:01It's going very well, we're all having such a great time
45:04And I've met loads of lovely people as well that came from the invite
45:09That I haven't met before but promised to meet again
45:12A successful soiree, partly due to her friends
45:15Like saviour of the cottage pies Sue, who she met at a party last summer
45:20Everyone's trying to meet new friends
45:22And life in the villages is people reaching out, people being super friendly
45:26People welcoming you, so we're all on the same boat
45:30That's what it's all about
45:33Devonshire Paul Lee can now enjoy the shade he helped put up
45:36I think Lynn's party was a great success
45:38Lots of people turned up, which is all good
45:40Lynn's party, fabulous, wouldn't you say so, Ben?
45:43Yes
45:43Absolutely fabulous
45:44It was quite a lot of work, but it was well worth it
45:47When I can see people happy and everybody having fun, that's great
45:54Florida has given me the best life I could have
45:57I'm just happy to be here
45:59It's such a great life
Yorumlar
