00:00Guys, you see how weird our sailboat looks and it's looked weird for the last like two and a half
00:06years
00:09We lost our mast already
00:13We're gonna start by opening up our new boom
00:18Our mast is here
00:28Today is the day that it's gonna stop looking weird because we're gonna be putting our mast up today
00:32The crane's gonna arrive in about an hour
00:34We have a little bit more prep work to do before we can put it up and then and then
00:38it was gonna be a sailboat again
00:48Last night we were burning the midnight oil to finish up all the electrical and make sure everything was ready
00:53for this morning
00:54So we've got all the new wires run down through the mast
00:57We've got the spreader lights hooked up. We tested all the lights
01:00And they all work not much left to do we have to double check the rig once the mast goes
01:06up. We'll be trimming the rig
01:08Suaging the ends and then putting the turnbuckles on but we have to do all that with a mast up
01:12Because it's a new mast and so we have no idea the exact measurements that the rig needs to be
01:17So that's why the guys from John Master here so that they can make sure that it's properly set up
01:23tuned adjusted and secured
01:26So that we can go sailing someday soon
01:30It's exciting. You guys want a tour?
01:33So starting at the top we have our wind transducer. It's invisible
01:38It's a new technology. It works very well. It's wireless. It's waterproof
01:41It takes zero electricity. No, we this is the base for it
01:44It sticks out off the front tells us the wind speed and direction
01:47But we took it off for the hoist so that it doesn't accidentally smack on the crane line and break
01:53So that goes there anchor lights here
01:56Back here is the classic Windex that tells us an analog version of wind direction and
02:02We built a little a little light for it 3d printed a little base
02:06Put a little red led in there so it shines up at the Windex so when we're sailing at night
02:11We can look up and see it, which is awesome
02:14We've got all the plugs for those hidden underneath the side
02:17So they're out of the way for chafe and light and uv and rain and easy to disconnect
02:24So if we need to like take the anchor light off, we can just pop it off pull the plug
02:28out take it down
02:30VHF antennas on the side as well. Just like a classic stainless steel whip pretty
02:36Basic because there's nothing fancy about a VHF antenna and on this side. We have this little
02:41This little fluffy
02:43It's a little fluffy thing
02:45Which has something to do with lightning and we are making a lightning protection video and we will get into
02:49that later
02:49But not today underneath that. We've got all the rigging this
02:54Mast is set up quite a bit differently than our old one because we are having
03:00Four head sails
03:01So up here at the top, we've got a halyard for the spinnaker our code zero
03:06Which we had before and our spare halyard and then this giant fixture is where the four stay is going
03:11to be attached
03:13And underneath that is going to be our halyard for our
03:16larger
03:17genoa
03:19Underneath that is going to be our solent stay
03:21Underneath that's going to be the halyard for our solent rigs
03:24We're going to have two roller furthers on the bow so we can just have
03:27A much larger assortment of head sails rigged and ready to fly at any time, which is very exciting
03:33And then there's a whole bunch of nothing until we get down to the spreaders
03:38These are for our lazy jacks
03:41And then radar is installed
03:46And then underneath we've got our steaming light and our four deck light also on a
03:51Deutsch plug so that we can just pop this whole assembly off if we need to
03:55Lights tend to fail
03:57A lot quicker than wires do so this light's also pretty cool because we can just like
04:02Take it off take it down
04:05Put it back on
04:07If it ever dies we can just pop out a new one
04:10And then last night I finished wiring up our spreader lights
04:13These are pretty cool
04:14They are by lumatec which most of our lights are by lumatec
04:17And these ones have red and white and they're both dimming
04:20So at night we can have like a nice subtle dim red light or a bright red light
04:25So we don't lose our night vision or we can go full daylight mode if we want to
04:30Also unplug so we can pop those off if we need to
04:33And that's wired up and down through the mast here
04:37These giant chunks of stainless steel are for our lower shrouds
04:41This is the lower forward this is the lower aft
04:43This is I think six millimeter stainless and I think what we had before was like 1.5
04:48So it's a solid three times stronger plus it's got two bolts going through the mast instead of just one
04:54So it's got super super strength and then these two
04:58Sheaves and these two fair leads are for our two
05:02Downwind poles so because we have two headsails now if when we're going downwind
05:06We can just wing on wing our two headsails and not need to worry about a spinnaker
05:09These are the tracks for our downwind poles so we can store them on the mast
05:13And they're already rigged so we can slide the cars up and down and adjust the height
05:18And then we've got all of our halyard
05:20Exits for the main the spinnaker the genoa the spare the jib the storm jib
05:28The topping lifts for the two poles and then we've got winch bases down here because we're still going to
05:35have mast winches for the
05:37Spinnaker halyard genoa halyard jib halyard storm jib halyard
05:42So we'll probably use a spare halyard or a topping lift for that and then this is our new gooseneck
05:49It's beautiful. This is where the boom is going to get attached and it is
05:55Machined aluminum which is pretty cool
05:56One of the reasons why we like the work they do at john mass because they do a lot of
06:00machining of their own aluminum parts
06:01Rather than casting them. So this is a lot stronger boom's going to get attached here
06:06And then we've got looks like the cutout for where we can put our sail slugs in just above it
06:11Which is awesome. And then down here is a matching one for the boom vang
06:16Which we're now going to have a hydraulic boom vang which makes me super happy
06:19And then just underneath it is where our boat deck is going to be
06:24It looks weird when it's laying down
06:27But it'll all make a lot more sense once it goes up. I think we also have this other stay
06:31down the side of the mast here
06:33That you can see it's tight and um
06:37That's a secret
06:38We'll tell you later. Why is it a secret?
06:40Because it's cool and I want to build suspense
06:44Okay, if you guys can guess what this is for it's attached just below our lower shrouds right here above
06:50the gooseneck for the boom
06:51If you can guess what this is
06:53I'll give you a cookie. We also have two conduits
06:57Riveted to the inside of the mast one going all the way to the mast head and one going up
07:01to just below the spreaders
07:02Which is amazing
07:04Previously we didn't and then in puerto rico we tried to install a conduit in the mast while the mast
07:11was up
07:11And that was exciting it did help but it wasn't great
07:14But now we have like an officially factory installed conduit in the mast and they're quite large
07:18And it makes running wires so easy. We were able to wire the entire mast yesterday even though it took
07:24us
07:2519 hours then all the wires come out here
07:27um
07:28And then we're gonna build all the plugs and connectors for that once the mast is installed but
07:32That's that's the whole mast the guys from john master coming back soon so we can like finish rigging it
07:36and make sure everything's good, but
07:38i'm excited
07:40Oh, we're gonna put our furlers up once the mast is up too
07:57This is our new boom um we are gonna have mid boom main sheeting
08:02So this thing has been beefed up from what we had before because it's taking all those main sheet loads
08:08right in the middle rather than on the end
08:10We're also gonna have all of our reefing lines run internally and we finally have an outhaul
08:17So we can control the lower section of our sail all very exciting things
08:22We also have a hydraulic boom kicker this time. So we're not going to need a topping lift on the
08:26back of the boom
08:27This thing's a beast. It's gonna look so good up on umma
08:45All right, we're ready to put the thing up it's a bit of a circus, but I think it's gonna
08:51go smooth
08:53I think we should put a line around at least one of the ends so we can control it
09:00This is it guys it is
09:02Finally happening after all these years working on the boat
09:07It really feels like we're getting so much closer to being out there again
09:11And you guys can understand how big of a moment and how massive of a valve stone this is for
09:17us
09:17But we only get to do this once
09:20So while Dan and the guys from from mass are going to focus on getting this giant thing onto the
09:26boat
09:27My job is to make sure that you guys get to experience it with us
09:30So I have all the cameras and handheld cameras the gopros the phones the 360s
09:36I have them all over the place on the boat on the mast on the train
09:40And then I am not missing this shot because
09:44This is huge and umma is finally becoming a sailboat again today
