00:00G'day guys, we're Strick and Fran and if you like wild adventures, remote camping, fishing
00:05and spearfishing in untouched tropical islands, then you've come to the right spot.
00:11For the last five years we've been living off the land and sea on our little powerboat
00:14but just recently we've upgraded to wind power and it's now been 30 days at sea on our new
00:21adventure vessel, travelling through some of the most pristine and wild parts of Australia.
00:26The goal is to take our home even further than ever before, so subscribe and come with
00:32us as we do our best to survive and hopefully thrive out here.
00:42Good morning guys, welcome back to a new episode.
00:44Welcome back guys, this place is incredible.
00:46If you're new here, this is part of a larger series, please go back and watch the whole
00:50series because man, you've got to see what we got up to here.
00:53Check this out.
00:54It's really sad to leave this spot.
00:56I know, it's hard to leave, isn't it?
00:57Let's do it.
00:58You ready?
00:59Yeah.
00:59Alright, time to activate sailing's trick.
01:02Arrgh, raise the black.
01:04It's time to sail the seven seas.
01:06Hop the anchor, kill the main, pull the front sail line.
01:10Let's go.
01:12Ready?
01:13Coming up.
01:15Yeah, slow, slow, slow.
01:17Yeah.
01:18Nice.
01:19So sad to leave this spot.
01:22Nice and protected at low tide, isn't it?
01:24There's a bit of a windbreak with the sand cave, but I think as soon as we poke our head
01:28out here, I think it's going to be howling.
01:30Nice and protected.
01:31It's going to be a quick sail, I reckon, Fran may be our quickest today.
01:34Ready?
01:35Yeah.
01:37Turning to starboard.
01:53There's some power in those sails today, Fran.
01:58Straight up to nine knots.
02:00Nine knots out of the forelocks.
02:02That's awesome.
02:03That's awesome.
02:07Land, ahoy!
02:08Kind of.
02:12It looks pretty, but it's probably not the best anchorage, so have a think about it.
02:18Oh, we would love to stay here anchored for the night.
02:21I mean, I reckon it's just so pretty, isn't it?
02:23Nice clear water.
02:24But unfortunately, it wouldn't be safe.
02:26So what's happening, you see behind me, the current is ripping in from the channels either
02:31side of this sand cave.
02:32And it's just not a good place to anchor overnight.
02:36If that wind switches at all, it'll swing the boat and sit up on top of one of these rocks
02:41and we'll be shipwrecked out here, which is obviously what we're trying to avoid.
02:43So what we will do, just jump in for a swim and cool off.
02:53All right, let's get these anchor up, sails up, keep heading north.
02:58All right, ready?
02:58Coming up.
02:59Just once we do get up, Fran, that current is racing, so we'll have to get off the reef
03:02pretty quick.
03:03Are they GTs in front of you?
03:04Oh, cool.
03:06Coming up slow.
03:07All right, anchor up.
03:09Nicely done.
03:10Let's get out of here.
03:12Nice work, Fran.
03:13Let's go find somewhere a little bit calmer and safer to anchor for the night.
03:16Oh, yeah.
03:19As we're getting the sails up, a big pot of dolphins come and started doing zoomies around
03:23the front of the boat.
03:25There was like 20 of them.
03:26That was so cool.
03:28I'm going to keep getting the sails up, I reckon, Fran.
03:30Oh, bummer.
03:31They just disappeared.
03:32One's coming up to ride the bow.
03:33Oh, yes.
03:34Come on, come on, come on.
03:35Yeah.
03:36They might want to ride the bow.
03:37Yes.
03:38Yeah.
03:39Oh, that's so awesome.
03:41That's been like our dream.
03:42We've wanted that since we got the boat.
03:44Dolphins are riding the bow wave.
03:46We need to go a bit faster, I reckon, Fran.
03:48Yeah.
03:51Look at that.
03:54Oh, that's awesome.
03:55That is so cool.
03:57Oh, one's got to jump.
03:59He's coming over.
04:04Oh, man.
04:05How cool is that, hey?
04:06Just so special.
04:08That's a good omen and we can find a safe anchorage for the night.
04:11How does it look from the satellite?
04:14Pretty good.
04:14This looks like a nice safe anchorage for us, actually.
04:16Yeah.
04:17It's getting a bit late in the day.
04:19We've got to jump in quickly and see if we can catch something for dinner.
04:22I'm really hungry.
04:33Perfect-sized coral trout straight on the boat.
04:36Oh, no way.
04:38Somehow, in this part of the world, there's always a coral trout waiting for us on the anchor line.
04:45How lucky are we?
04:48We're going to see.
05:02This is good.
05:03Yeah, it's part of us.
05:06We always try to aim for new species and all of a sudden, a yellow-leaf emperor starts heading straight
05:14away.
05:15That will be the perfect meal.
05:19How the hell did we miss that?
05:25Oh, no!
05:59I'm scared off the phone!
06:01Good sight, huh?
06:03I've got dinner!
06:05Oh, no!
06:07Oh, no!
06:08Oh, no!
06:09Oh, no!
06:24pretty special to be able to just jump straight off our home and come home with some fresh food
06:29like that although what's the what's the saying you spend your life savings on a boat so you could
06:34save a bit of money on groceries yeah it doesn't quite add up but these guys are normally quite
06:40challenging to hunt if you're in areas where they see lots of divers but i don't think many people
06:45dive here because he was so so curious as soon as i swam down and hit from him he just
06:52came straight
06:52in they're really really tasty you haven't eaten one of these guys in a while friends this should
06:56be great yeah so which species have we got this trip we've got mackerel mud crabs mantis shrimp
07:02coral trout maori sea perch and a moo that's it that's it yeah no dog tooth tuna yet
07:27we got rice cabbage and grilled fish my favorite
07:45bon appetit bon appetit do you think most people would say five out of five but the one today
07:54he was like a one out he didn't know what species he was he wasn't very hard today
08:00taste i don't even taste it yet i think he's five out of five thanks he's very good very good
08:06very very
08:07good in the morning oh he's just a bit further so just waking up this morning there's a huge
08:18school of bait fish they look like those smaller fusiliers and something is smashing them on the
08:22surface go friends see if you can get them out that far go go
08:28gotta put your back into it it's a pretty cool way to wake up anyway everything is definitely
08:34feeding this morning hopefully that school of bait on the surface there comes back
08:37a little closer to the boat yeah they're coming back they're coming back
08:57all right so the tide has now dropped a little bit it's coming on low tide and this is our
09:00little
09:01window of opportunity to get out in the tender and try and have a bit of an explore because that
09:05shallow reef protects any of the wind there's a couple of things we want to do we want to look
09:09for some crayfish we haven't yet had the chance to do that and of course we're always
09:13on the lookout for a dog tooth tuna there's a couple of spots we might get the chance to look
09:16so
09:17anyway let's uh let's get out for a bit of explore all aboard
09:32go get them
09:36and this spot here looks likely we've got a channel that would be sucking all the water out and coming
09:41onto the low tide as it all drains out hopefully it's hitting this point all that current aggregates
09:47all the bait fish and then hopefully those bigger fish are here friends just jumped in
09:51to check out to see whether our theory is correct how's it look down there we found a spot yeah
09:56it looks
10:12pretty good
10:13holy moly that was a huge bull shark did you see it
10:17it was pretty chill to be honest it didn't seem aggressive but it was a bit too curious for my
10:23lucky would have given you a hell of a fright hey just appearing out of the murk
10:27well um we're probably too remote to be playing around in areas where there's big bull sharks so
10:31we might move spots i think
10:35looks pretty likely for some crayfish so we're gonna get right in the shallow see if we can get
10:40our hands on a giant crayfish for lunch all right so you go that way i'll go this way sounds
10:46good
10:47yeah good luck
11:13have you seen anything not even a sign
11:18oh we are off and sailing we've probably got about 16 knots of wind coming from the southeast
11:26and we're heading fairly north so it's a pretty good angle straight onto our beam as i'm starting
11:30to realize these things makes you sail faster cruising along at eight knots at the moment we're cruising
11:35the and we're towing the tender out the back this is going to be a really quick sail up the
11:39inside of
11:40these reefs it's all happening out here we're sailing into a big storm
11:47land ahoy look at the lighting wow we're gold golden hour
11:57ready
12:05might be the best sunset we've had yeah i think we're going to make it around to the anchorage
12:10just before dark perfect timing
12:23morning guys we just woke up in the most beautiful anchorage the water is crystal clear and it's all
12:30happening i just spotted a huge queensland grouper right in the shallow which i mean it never happens
12:38there's massive gt's swimming with toniness all in the shallow in the crystal clear water and i think
12:45they're hunting so let's go and see if we can catch one hey jack let's go fishing
12:54let's go see if we can find those big gts
13:02we can find those big gts
13:09are you on yeah yeah oh
13:13you're not seeing anything i was just trying to
13:16i was so concentrated trying to get him away from the rock
13:20that was crazy as soon as it hit the surface i didn't even get time to pop it it just
13:25something smashed it
13:30nice i don't think he's the giant one you saw on the drone but this is a looks like a
13:36nice trevalla
13:37there's so many on the drone there's like i know maybe 10 of the little
13:41silver ones and then a couple of the big black ones oh there's a few following it there's two of
13:49them following it
13:54what a bloody perfect day hey conditions are just perfect
13:59all right
14:00i think they're trying to get a feed of whatever he's got hey
14:09that's a nice little gt probably doesn't even classify as a giant trevally just yet we'll uh
14:14let him go to get bigger see you mate
14:21that's a beautiful blue clear water what's this here friend is that eagle ray eagle ray there's a
14:26shark if we could catch something in the line now that's good to eat then that really just takes the
14:30pressure off for the whole day i guess the target species uh gts for fun to catch but they're not
14:36the best eating when they're big but something like a coral trout or a bluefin trevally that would just be
14:42amazing
14:46look at them all here on the boat there's a school of them down here
14:56yeah drop it there
15:00all right we're gonna go beach coming up
15:05oh hi then i thought oh wow so much rubbish
15:23wonder what it is it's heavy
15:40i think we're going to be based here around this islands for a couple of days because as you can
15:50see the storms
15:51all around us and this island gives us a couple of different anchorages like where we were last
15:56night but then it's forecast to be storms coming from that way so we can move the big boat around
16:00that side of the island so it's a pretty good base camp for a couple of days somewhere we can
16:05swim
16:05and catch fish and really ticks all the boxes here right
16:11let's go for a dive and see if we can get our hands on something underwater for lunch top of
16:15the
16:16target list would have to be a big crayfish at the moment
16:20we haven't had one yet this trip have we looks like there's a huge orb coming
16:26it's so green those clouds does that mean they've got like lightning in them when they're really green
16:37here comes the rain let's get under water
16:50these are the remains of an octopus dinner and wow look at these giant clams we always love looking for
16:58crayfish in the shallow because you never know what you come across
17:09so
17:14so
17:15so
17:33That one is way too deep, let's go look for another one
17:59There's so much water in the tender, we're gonna have a shower
18:05The sun is out again, it's time to head back out to our favorite place in the world
18:13How cool as this is this little channel which splits this reef in two
18:18We're heading right out to the drop-off, I think Fran's looking at some surf potential
18:23And then we're gonna snorkel and drift the whole way through and see what we can find
18:42How amazing is this coral coverage, the coral garden
18:47Beautiful
19:03We made it to the end of the channel
19:05How cool was that eh, what an awesome grip
19:07It was really special
19:44It sort of took us a little while because I've got a very specific
19:48meal that I want to cook in mine
19:50And you need to get a very small but legal coronation trout
19:56We always eat it like this in Indonesia, they love cooking it up
19:58Alright, we got a new chef tonight, so excited for this
20:03What's in the castaways boat kitchen?
20:06It's a bit of a surprise
20:07Surprise?
20:08Yeah, it's a bit of a surprise
20:09That trout matches our boat
20:10It does, doesn't it?
20:11But this is the beautiful coronation trout
20:14What I'm gonna do, I'm just gonna take his guts out and then get him ready for cooking
20:20It's in the back to basic castaways
20:23It's all happening tonight, this is a meal which I've had in Indonesia
20:27And it just tastes so darn good
20:29It's deep fried coronation trout with a sauce on top
20:32Basically the steps are, spear yourself a little coronation trout, gut and gill it
20:38And then you wanna really dry the skin out so it's gonna be nice and crunchy
20:41So how you wanna do that is you wanna criss cross it
20:44And then put some salt all over the skin and leave it to dry in a sea breezy area
20:50What that salt's gonna do is it's gonna suck the moisture out of the skin
20:53And make that skin really crispy later on
20:55Next step, you're gonna make your sauce
20:58The sauce is onion, garlic, ginger, bit of soy sauce on top
21:01And a bit of honey, so it's gonna be like a little bit sweet
21:03Once that's ready to go, then the main show
21:06The trick is a lot of oil
21:09We're gonna deep fry this little sucker
21:10So you wanna get a big pot or pan of oil, really really hot
21:15Once it's hot, then you get your fish in, hopefully you hear it
21:19That's a good sign, that's gonna be all that skin going really nice and crunchy
21:24That's the game plan, we'll see how it turns out
21:33These little cubes are just peeling off beautifully
21:36Yeah, it's like butter
21:37And a sauce, the sauce looks burnt, but that's just the soy
21:43Oh my, yes, that looks so good
21:55This is so good
21:56Good?
21:57This is the best meal we've had
21:59Really?
22:00Yeah
22:00Wow
22:01It should be a chef
22:03There you go, must have been a fluke
22:05And we've got probably a full moon tomorrow night
22:08So it's pretty special out here at the moment, guys
22:11Now, an exciting mission has just popped up
22:14So, long story short, there's a shipwreck up here which has been missing since 1870
22:20I've been doing a little bit of research overnight
22:22And I reckon I might have found out exactly where it is
22:25And it's just been overlooked for all these years
22:27It's quite a fitting day to go on a bit of a real-life treasure hunt
22:30So we're gonna sails up, anchor up
22:32Sail about 20 miles north
22:34I'll tell you why I think it's here
22:36And what it might have had on board
22:37But let's go in search of a real-life treasure hunt
22:41We're going in search of a shipwreck
22:42Are you excited?
22:43No
22:43What do you think our chances are?
22:445%
22:46A little bit more confident to me
22:54Come on
22:55Bye, Rhys
23:02It's quite a fitting day to look for an old shipwreck
23:04It's overcast, a little bit gloomy, a little bit windy
23:07And we're giving the old tender tow set up a pretty good test out
23:11But I don't mind doing that actually
23:13We'll figure out if there's any weak points
23:15This is the quickest sail we've done consistently. What's our max speed Fran so far?
23:2212.5 is our max speed and we're just about on that now. That's awesome.
23:28We're gonna be there in no time at all. I feel like this would be an appropriate time for some
23:32pirate music and some slow motion as we're off to look for a shipwreck.
23:49That was awesome eh? Everything went to plan. Perfect weather to go to look for a shipwreck.
23:55Damn it! This is the first rain we've had and it's right at coming on to low tide which is
24:03our best chance to look for the wreck.
24:04What a bummer. A fair bit in it too. Yeah. It's nice to have a fresh water shower though.
24:11It is so nice. I feel so clean already. Hopefully it doesn't stop right now. Yeah with a head full
24:18of shampoo.
24:21If you're into your history you might recognize this place. Out in front of the boat
24:25is a channel called Providential Channel and in 1770 when Captain Cook was mapping the outside of
24:32Australia. This is the channel which really gave him his name I reckon. So he was sailing up the
24:37outside of the Great Barrier Reef and the wind totally dropped and remember this is a sailboat.
24:42They need the wind and the currents were pushing him onto the reef. He thought he was doomed
24:46and he spotted a little tiny channel and he managed to navigate the boat through that and drift on
24:52through and hence named it Providential Channel. And this little channel he mapped through the reef
24:57allowed him to then continue around the top of Australia and the rest is history. And years later
25:01it became a known passage to get from the inside of the barrier reef to the outside of the barrier
25:06reef. That was in 1770. Exactly a hundred years later a boat was wrecked in this channel and that's
25:12what I reckon I'm on the right track to finding today. The boat's name we're after is called The Freak
25:17and it's never been found. Looking at the Australian Heritage database they've got it shipwrecked on this
25:24reef out here which is a called the Southern Detached Reef. But I've had a bit of a read through
25:29the old
25:30newspapers and this is the description they give. Was returning to Sydney when a heavy southeast gale
25:37forced the captain to anchor the vessel on the west side of Providential Channel. So here we are we've got
25:43Providential Channel right over the western side. Remember he's going to be trying to be protected
25:48from that southeast direction the southeast wind. Both chains were let go but they soon parted and
25:53the freak was driven onto a detached reef near Providential Channel. And this has sort of become
25:59a bit of a red herring because I guess the historians have gone a detached reef near Providential Channel
26:05and they've just gone bang and put it out on southern small detached reef. The thing they've
26:09overlooked is back in the day the terminology used for any smaller reef that was detached from the
26:15Great Barrier Reef they would just call it a detached reef. So we have a look where I reckon the
26:19boat was
26:20anchored, the anchor lines break, blowing southeast winds, it's going to get drifted in this direction
26:25and look there's a high spot right there and that surely is where the freak would have got washed in
26:31on
26:31and I reckon right there is going to be our shipwreck. I'm going to put the drone up guys fly
26:35over now
26:36we've got a little window of opportunity being the low tide we're going to try spot it from the air
26:41then we're going to get in with a metal detector and see what we can find anything like um the
26:45anchor
26:46chain anchors themselves maybe some coins if we can find some coins they've got a date on it then then
26:51of course that'll really really tie up this mystery.
26:57Call point updated.
27:00Let's go find the shipwreck. Now on the drone I'm just trying to see any distinct straight lines
27:06are the normal best thing to look for for a shipwreck. A straight line will indicate something
27:11like the anchor chain or something man made. This is where the boat would have wrecked and there's
27:16this one kind of yellow one which is just a different colour to everything else which kind
27:21of catches your eye so we'll have to go see what that is and see how there's like shallower
27:26black items all around it which could be parts of the shipwreck.
27:31We're going to have to go have a look at that underwater and there's a couple of points of
27:35interest that look a little bit different colour to the rest of the coral right on top of the the
27:40reef so we're just going to have to jump in and snorkel and see what they are. Let's go so
27:45we've got
27:4610 minutes until the low tide so we're going to be there bang on and then we've probably got like
27:51an
27:51hour where we can work and look and then that that it's going to be all over the current will
27:56be too
27:56strong it'll get too rough. That wind would have washed them straight here on this detached reef here.
28:03So you can't even see when we saw that shell. Yeah you wouldn't have been able to see it until
28:07you're on top of it and hitting it. Exciting! So imagine we found some coins.
28:14All right before we start looking I just want to show you what exactly we're looking for so this is
28:18a shipwreck site from a previous day and you can see while the anchors are of course quite obvious
28:24right in the middle of the screen there now that is actually a cannon and you can see how well
28:29it
28:30almost like camouflages into the bottom with all the growth over it like the anchors are definitely
28:34obvious but the site we're looking at today is actually expected to have a lot more coral growth
28:40camouflaging any material so that's where the metal detector comes in. The plan is just to swim along
28:46the bottom waving it around and hopefully something pings at me. Now let's go find this shipwreck.
28:58Oh something white catches my eye. Man I thought this was like a dinner plate or some kind of
29:05artifact but it's just a big shell that a fish has crunched up. This structure is definitely worth
29:12detecting so we're looking for a wooden shipwreck and unfortunately after all this time most of
29:17the wooden material would have succumbed to the elements but any metals would uh would be remaining
29:22so the obvious ones are of course the anchor anchor chain but of course any little treasures or
29:28artifacts may still be here. No pings unfortunately no luck on this one.
29:38Wow look at the coral coverage here it's just incredible isn't it plate corals and branching
29:45corals all different shapes colors and sizes you can imagine if there was some little shipwreck
29:50artifacts here man it'd be under layers of coral.
29:56Oh this is the golden structure I spotted from the drone that golden color seems to be coming just from
30:02this soft coral which has formed almost a carpet over the bombing.
30:08Man I had such high hopes for this but no pings.
30:13Oh wow that current is racing now and it just goes straight off the drop off it could have ripped
30:19that shipwreck straight down here off the drop off.
30:22Any hits Fran? No hits. A lot of uh coral coral at the back.
30:28Yeah I think it'd be if there was anything it would be overgrown by corals.
30:34And at the front it must get a bit of swell and uh weather events because it's all smashed.
30:40Yeah you can kind of imagine this force of the swell to crush all the coral like that kind of
30:45has
30:46bulldozed a lot of it so that. Yeah so I think if it was at the front it would have
30:49washed it off the reef.
30:51And then at the back it would have overgrown.
30:54Yeah yeah yeah we are really trying to find I guess a needle in a haystack
30:59and we're not even sure if that haystack exists in this place.
31:04But anyway that's all that's all part of the game so we'll go up
31:07and do another drift and just see if we can you know see if we can get lucky.
31:11So
31:20so
31:27so
31:50hey Frank can you mark up here what the hell is that that's got to be a wreck
31:56Jack just called me over and said to mark a spot so I just did that I'm going to pick
32:02him up and
32:02so curious you know what it's found we might have found something hey what was it
32:08so the current is racing so I just dove down and just did like a big drift along the bottom
32:13yeah and I look up there's something that sits maybe like five meters off the rest of the bottom
32:19and it's just this like big vertical structure of the arch there's a hollow bit in the middle
32:25it just looks man-made it doesn't look like a natural bit of coral any shipwreck that's this
32:31this all will have like coral and calcium carbonate and stuff growing over the top of it to disguise it
32:36but like we've got to go up and and have another better look at this and I'll try get the
32:41metal
32:41detector onto it yeah no it's pretty exciting
32:44so
33:27What's up?
33:44The drop was perfect you dropped me maybe 50 meters up and as I dropped dove down on it
33:49I just landed right on it and it's had the metal detector up and it just didn't go off
33:54So I don't know, maybe it's a natural structure, but it's just so strange. I really thought we were
33:59Onto it, but yeah, look at these crazy whirlpools and currency. It's we can't keep doing this around. We've missed
34:04our opportunity
34:05We're drifting at four knots. We're drifting at four knots. Wow
34:09The freak shipwreck
34:11Will remain unfound for now
34:15Oh
34:39Wow
34:40Wow
34:41It came out of nowhere
34:52Isn't he a beauty? That was so strange
34:54We're just swimming along on the surface and looked down and he thought he was camouflaged in amongst the corals
35:00This is a buffalo, I reckon they're the hardest reef fish to shoot in Australia and this guy just thought
35:06he was camouflaged
35:07I actually shot him from the surface. I can't believe that the biggest one I've ever got
35:11The easiest fish I've ever shot. That was so bizarre
35:16Oh
35:17We will soon catch up with some friends, hence why we need to stock up on a few different species
35:22of fish
35:33Oh my god
35:35Oh my god
35:37Footballer trout
35:40Look at that
35:41That's a really nice one
35:43Look at that
35:45Great work
35:51Yeah
35:51Here's the day's catch
35:52Here's the day's catch
35:52What have you got there friends?
35:53We've got a footballer trout
35:55And a furonation trout
35:57Our friends are going to be stuffed
35:59Yeah, yeah
36:00We've got a buffalo emperor
36:02And a big trout to share with our mates
36:04We're going to go back and do some provisioning
36:06So hence we'll trade a bit of fish for some water and fuel or whatever
36:11What are we going to eat tonight?
36:14Inny minny mo
36:16What for choice, let's fill them up
36:18Then we're going to have a bit of a cook up later on
36:24If it was for us, we would just stay out here forever
36:27But after 30 plus days at sea, it's now time to head back to the mainland to refuel and stock
36:36up on some fresh water
36:37It's also a great excuse to visit our friends at the temple
36:41This place is just a must stop for any adventurer in the Cape York Peninsula
36:47For a real Australian experience
36:57This place is for us
36:58To see and rumor
36:58To get the best andikal
36:58We have to barely go
36:58the perfect necesiton? I'm
