Children under 16 should be banned from riding e-bikes for their own protection, that's the message from the South Australian branch of the Australian Medical Association. Doctors say they're seeing devastating injuries in emergency departments which can no longer be ignored.

00:02E-bikes have become increasingly popular in recent years, especially as the fuel crisis
00:07forces people to alternative modes of transport.
00:09But the Australian Medical Association says they're not for everyone.
00:13They're not safe in the hands of an under 16 who cannot control a bike that goes at

00:24Well, the worst thing it can do, Bree, is cause death. Death, traumatic brain injury, blunt

00:34And pushing for a ban for under 16s, something the government says will be considered in
00:39an upcoming review of e-mobility device laws.
00:42E-bikes are already heavily regulated, but the minimum age will be a live consideration
00:48for the government.

00:59There has been no education about e-bikes at schools. We learn more about sun safety and
01:05cyber safety.
01:06I mean, you get sensible kids and you get ratbags, so you get all sorts, don't you?
01:11In the meantime, the health minister's pushing the safety message.
01:14People need to wear a helmet when they're doing these things. I do not bloody understand why
01:18people think the asphalt's going to fall different or feel different if you hit it coming off
01:23an e-bike compared to a motorbike or anything else.
01:25While a police operation targets compliance and enforcement.
01:29SA's transport minister says once the review is complete, any new rules should come into
01:33place this year.
