Young Australian adults are delaying having dental care due to cost with many performing DIY dentistry under social media influence. Those are some of the findings of a national survey prompting more calls for funding reform.

00:02University student Ava has moved out of home and into the reality of juggling her own budget.

00:21A national survey of 25,000 adults by the Australian Dental Association
00:26found dental affordability is an issue for 18 to 25 year olds.
00:31There's not an emphasis on preventative oral health care and they are falling through the cracks.
00:37According to the survey, 60% of respondents have problems with wisdom teeth.
00:43Only 38% of those playing high impact sports are wearing a mouth guard.
00:48And 60% are being influenced by social media to have cosmetic dental procedures.
00:55There's a lot of DIY dentistry happening as well.
00:58Bleaching products that they can get over the internet that can also cause damage to teeth.

01:09The Greens want mouths to be covered under Medicare like the rest of the body.
01:13For decades dentists, experts, community advocates and the Greens have been calling for the reform that's needed.
01:22Bringing dental care into Medicare.
01:24A spokesperson says the Albanese government recognises oral health is fundamental to overall health and quality of life.
01:33And it's developing a new national oral health plan.
01:37It definitely needs to become more affordable especially for young people making the transition like myself out of home.

01:43Let's look at them down over whether this plant makes themselves feel comfortable or feel comfortable.
