00:01There are 28 recommendations for change in total.
00:05Probably the most significant is that only those aged 16 and over should be able to ride both e-scooters
00:12and e-bikes.
00:14Now currently there are some age restrictions here in Queensland.
00:17Those over 12 can ride, but those aged between 12 and 16 need to have parental supervision.
00:23The issue is that's really difficult for people to enforce.
00:27So by introducing a 16 and up rule makes it a lot easier for law enforcement.
00:32Some other significant changes are that any vehicle that can go over 25 kilometres an hour,
00:38regardless of whether it's an e-bike or an e-scooter, will be reclassified as a motorbike,
00:44which obviously brings in a lot more restrictions around where that can be ridden
00:48and the licensing around the requirements for licensing for who can ride them.
00:53Another change is that a flat 10 kilometre per hour restriction will be put on public footpaths,
01:00like the one I'm on today, which was a significant cause for alarm for a lot of people here in
01:05Brisbane,
01:06not wanting to share narrow footpaths with e-scooters and e-bikes that are pretty quick.
01:13This has been a six month long inquiry process, which started in about May of last year.
01:22This has been a major source of alarm.
01:25We've had 12 deaths caused by either e-scooters or e-bikes in the past 12 months.
01:30A lot of those have involved young children and more than 6,000 emergency department presentations in the past 12
01:38months.
01:39And some of the injuries involved there, Catherine, have been horrendous.
01:42So this has been widely welcomed by the medical community and by the public.
01:46But now we wait to see whether the government will implement those changes.
01:50And some of them will require law reform, so that could take some time.
01:53But we've been told that the government is broadly supportive of these recommendations.
