00:00And David Lloyd, formerly of Laksha and England, chose his man of the match. It was Alan Lamb.
00:09Welcome to the highlights of the third won international in the series for the Texaco Trophy.
00:14Of course, the handsome trophy was in fact won by England for their wins at Edgbaston and Old Trafford.
00:20But Lourdes had its own special atmosphere, even more so earlier today when the new stand,
00:26the Compton and Edwidge stand was opened by Dennis Compton at the nursery end of the ground.
00:32The weather, it was fine, and that's a relief after earlier matches.
00:36It said cloudy with sunny intervals, but it wasn't too much cloud around.
00:41There were changes in the teams. Alan Lamb was out. He'd hurt his foot, also on the day that he
00:45had been removed from the vice-captaincy of England.
00:48And in came Dermot Reeve of Warwickshire, and out went Chris Lewis. In came David Lawrence of Gloucestershire.
00:55And for West Indies, well, their side had one change. Gordon Greenwich twisted his knee at Manchester, and in came
01:00Brian Lara.
01:01The umpires were Mervyn Kitchen and David Shepard.
01:06England won the toss, and they put West Indies into bat.
01:09So we'll join them now in the third over.
01:11Lawrence is going to Dujon. It's the first ball Dujon faced. The score, eight for no wicket.
01:18There it is. Well, Geoffrey Dujon's waited 11 minutes for that. First ball, out. And Lawrence, well, he's settled down
01:27full length.
01:28Yes. And the extra pace did the rest.
01:34They looked quite pleased then, did David Lawrence, after he'd taken that wicket.
01:39Slip was in danger of being trodden as he ran through.
01:42But it was a good full length delivery.
01:44Quite a gate there. It didn't do a great deal. It just kept on going down the slope.
01:49Dujon playing a long way from his body.
01:53Just been back a fraction. But he was never really on line.
01:59Well, the hat tells us who.
02:01Number three is Ritchie Richardson.
02:13Come on!
02:23Well, certainly Lawrence, at the moment, has put everything into it.
02:27That came back up the hill quite a bit as well.
02:29It just caught the pad.
02:31The thigh pad.
02:32And good take by Jack Ruskin.
02:35A little bit afraid, as he's bowled well in both of these Texaco games at Edgbiston and at Old Trafford.
02:51Oh, what a terrific take and a catch.
02:54Wonderful piece of wicket-keeping.
02:56And what a good delivery to come back up the slope from the nursery end.
03:00And now West Indies really in trouble.
03:04Eight for two.
03:05But what a wonderful piece of wicket-keeping this was.
03:17This is Brian Lyra.
03:21And this is that Dufretus dismissal again.
03:24Ball nipping back up the hill.
03:26And there you can see how quick it is at full speed.
03:29Brilliant catch.
03:40Oh, it has to be a good shot and travelling very fast to get past Dufretus.
03:52It's got a hell of a feel there.
04:27We won't see anything better from that today.
04:32As we do, we'll all be on our feet applauding.
04:57Well, I'd have thought the lesson might have been learned.
05:25He might have decided that David Lawrence has to go.
05:41And that's a tremendous blow by Richardson.
05:46Simply decided to go down the pitch, come what may, and whack it.
05:52Yeah, so that was definitely a predetermined shot.
05:54He was off before Richard Jones let go of the ball.
05:57And you see him there on his way.
05:59He didn't get to the pitch.
06:00And he just got away with that.
06:03It could easily have gone straight in the air.
06:12He's got him.
06:15He tucked it up on leg stump.
06:17Richardson went for the big one, but already the men were deployed on the boundary there.
06:22And he hits it straight to De Freitas.
06:29Well, unnecessary really.
06:30I know the attacking intention was there, but really he just almost decided beforehand
06:38and hit it straight to De Freitas at deep mid-wicket.
06:46Four fielders on the offside, saving one.
06:54They're not a bit of use when the ball is hit straight down the ground for six.
07:05Well, maybe the West Indians don't want Klingworth playing the test series.
07:08It looks like we've certainly made a deliberate attempt to try and hit him this morning.
07:20And he's done it.
07:22Well bowled.
07:24Again, he floated it.
07:25Nice to the variation.
07:26Lara, he knew, was looking to push it along a bit.
07:33Classical method of this machine.
07:38Gus Logie.
07:39Gus Logie.
07:45That's four.
07:46That's Logie off the mark, finally.
07:49Fourteen deliveries.
07:51It took him.
08:04Well, and then he overcompensated.
08:07That brings up the hundred.
08:11And the 26th over.
08:14It's an illustration, really, of how well England have bowled,
08:17and particularly Reeve and Illingworth.
08:18The first 50 came off 67 deliveries,
08:21and the second one off 88.
08:32That's beautiful strike from Bib Richards.
08:35Too short from Richard Illingworth.
08:37And Richards seized on it straight away.
08:44Gooch has decided to try to slow things down a little.
08:47West Indies getting away from England immediately after lunch.
08:52De Freitas comes back on this time from the pavilion end,
08:55the members end.
09:02Straight down his throat.
09:05That's the third time I've seen Richards do that in recent times.
09:09Twice against the Australians.
09:10And now De Freitas coming back on has combined with Richard Illingworth.
09:17He hardly had to move an inch.
09:20It still didn't stop the heart flutters as the ball was coming towards him.
09:29Well, he's set in.
09:30It looks like having a heart flutters as he caught that ball.
09:32He made it look very easy indeed.
09:33Short of a length.
09:34They're just pulling around, swinging around, helping it on its way.
09:38And they're straight into Richard Illingworth.
09:40And, well, really took it like a piece of cake.
09:44Thank you very much.
09:45Straight in.
09:47So, he'd be very happy.
09:48He's come to the international scene.
09:50And without any trouble at all, he's settled in.
09:56Karl Hooper is the new batsman.
10:02Here's Pringle.
10:14And De Freitas might be on the ball, but Pringle's not.
10:2662 balls and six boundaries.
10:30Played in delightful fashion.
10:37And that's the sort of counter-attack they've produced all day.
10:42Every time England get on top, the batsman comes out and starts to flail away.
10:50Yes, De Freitas pitching short here.
10:52Not often he's done that today.
10:54And Hooper very quickly onto it and pulling it away over mid-wicket.
10:58It's in the position to get a good score here.
10:59These two can put another 30 or 40 and get the score past 200.
11:03And the bowlers can just chip in with a few.
11:06250 plus.
11:08That'll be a reasonable score.
11:15That's a cracking shot.
11:21That's a cracking shot.
11:21Again, Dermot Reeve got the waist wing, but slightly overpitched.
11:27Vicious flick of the wrist by Logie.
11:36Right, a lovely shot.
11:39There was elegance there as well as the power.
11:43Well, I think Karl Hooper had made up his mind there that if Pringle pitched the ball up, he was
11:47going to Wackie.
11:48I think this is predetermined.
11:50I think this is predetermined.
11:50Just pitched up there.
11:52The foot's already going down.
11:53He's into the shot almost before Pringle's delivered it.
12:15200 has come up.
12:16200 and 1 to 5.
12:18Lowly 60.
12:19Hooper 10.
12:28Oh, that's a cracking shot.
12:30What a wonderful stir.
12:34Well, a six over extra cover.
12:37Using your feet to the medium facer, Derek Pringle.
12:42Pringle's not used to people dancing down a pitch like that.
12:44But what perfect execution.
12:47Well, it's gorgeous timing, is that?
12:48You've seen Viv Richards hit people with power.
12:51This is timing.
12:52Lovely footwork.
12:53Full flow of the bat going straight through.
12:56Keeping the bat straight and the timing is exquisite.
13:02And here's a young man who likes to box as well.
13:04I think Karl Hooper preferred to face him bowling than boxing.
13:15That's high and it's going to be caught by Neil Fairbrother at Fineleg.
13:22Well, that's the luck that you need.
13:24He would never claim that to be his best ball.
13:27But he has removed Hooper.
13:29He's got his second wicket.
13:30And Hooper goes to 26.
13:32Well, it won't matter.
13:34David Lawrence will tell everybody he bowled for that.
13:36He kept it short.
13:37He wanted Karl Hooper to hook.
13:39I just dropped it short.
13:40He'll tell his mum.
13:41There was Karl Hooper.
13:42Thought he could hit me out of the ground.
13:44Went straight down Fairbrother's throat at Fineleg.
13:46One of the safest pair of hands.
13:48Another one of these good England fielders.
13:49Good movers.
13:50They catch these in catching practice before the start of the match.
13:53And they've no problem catching them during the game.
13:57Markham Marshall is the new batsman.
14:16Markham Marshall is the new batsman.
14:26That England badly wanted.
14:29Bounce.
14:30A little top edge.
14:31It went pretty quick.
14:32But...
14:33A 200th chance.
14:34Didn't have to jump.
14:35And...
14:36Russell will be disappointed at missing that.
14:40Graham Gooch bringing himself on.
14:45And got him.
14:48So that's good reward for Gooch.
14:50He's kept a full length.
14:51He's bowled straight.
14:52It was a brave decision to come on and bowl at the death.
14:56Every over he bowled.
14:57Then one of his main ones didn't have to.
15:00And that's the end of a very fine innings from Gaslogy.
15:06Again...
15:06Slightly slower ball.
15:08And...
15:08Trying to drive through it.
15:09Didn't quite get there.
15:11And...
15:11Well, a comfortable catch there for Gooch.
15:21There we are.
15:212.41 for seven.
15:23Five overs left.
15:24That's the sort of...
15:27Score which West Indies would be looking to add 40 at least after the last five overs.
15:31England would settle for, I think, anything less than that.
15:41Well, that's a good start to whatever West Indies have got in mind.
15:45One first bowler hooking another.
15:47Six into them, in fact.
15:52And Michael Moulton's a really strong little man.
15:55I mean, I said before, he's only about five foot nine, ten stone.
15:58But just look at this shot.
16:00Over mid-wicket there and six runs.
16:09And out.
16:10Well, there's different ways of getting a wicket.
16:13And that might look fortunate.
16:16And it is in a way.
16:17But David Lawrence has deserved that.
16:20And away goes Malcolm Marshall.
16:24And that's the eighth wicket to go down.
16:28258 for eight.
16:34Face slightly open.
16:36Trying to get on top of it, but didn't quite.
16:39And another catch that was taken very, very easily indeed by Defraite as well.
16:47Courtney Walsh.
16:57And got him.
16:59Well, Gloucestershire through and through.
17:02Walsh out.
17:03LBW Lawrence given out by umpire Sheppard.
17:07258 for nine.
17:09And that's a wicket that might be recalled down west in the years to come.
17:15Yes, it just shows that if you have that little bit of extra pace, it's not too often that nine,
17:22ten jacks make too many runs.
17:24And Walsh didn't play either of those deliveries very, very well.
17:30Eventually, six more runs were added.
17:32In fact, it was a bad start by the West Indies.
17:34The total of eight.
17:36Two wickets fell.
17:37Then there were three very enterprising partnerships.
17:39Richardson and Lara put on 63.
17:42Richardson and Logie, 73.
17:43And Logie and Hooper, 63.
17:45But really, it was a disappointing end.
17:47They fell short of a realistic target.
17:51England bowled well.
17:52The biggest wicket taker was David Lawrence with four wickets.
17:55But he conceded 67 runs.
17:57Truly the best bowler was De Freitas.
18:00Two for 26.
18:01And Richard Illingworth, a fine performance.
18:03Two wickets for 53 of his 11 overs.
18:07So, what did England require?
18:09265 runs to win at a run rate of 4.82 per over.
18:13We'll join them now in the fourth over.
18:15The score is 11 for no wicket.
18:17And Patterson bows to Gooch.
18:23That's a great shot.
18:26And I particularly like the way he then just wandered away from the crease
18:30and didn't even bother looking at Patterson.
18:38This is Ambrose.
18:43To be quick.
18:46Yes.
18:48Brilliant fielding.
18:50Irvin Kitchen was getting himself into position.
18:54Wasn't quite settled to give the decision.
18:57But he was certainly turned and had a clear view of it.
19:01And it was good umpiring.
19:07A new batsman, Graham Hick.
19:23And it goes down.
19:26But it's four runs.
19:30Now it's bad luck with Patrick Patterson.
19:32He got a good line just outside of Stampton.
19:33But once Michael Atherton was slow to the line of the ball.
19:54And that's a lovely shot.
19:55Up on the tips of the toes.
20:00Behind it and yet giving himself room to get the back through.
20:04And now we come to our first change.
20:06Which brings on Malcolm Marshall.
20:16That's a big, big appeal.
20:18Down the leg side and the batsman looks.
20:21All umpire Kitchen has to do is nod his head.
20:31Mike Atherton.
20:33Well he always thinks a little unlucky to get a stick down the leg side.
20:37He played so well.
20:3825 runs.
20:41Neil Fairbrother is the new batsman.
20:49Oh Fairbrother's gone.
20:54Well that was a classic case of one batsman in first gear.
20:57And the other in fourth.
21:01Certainly Fairbrother made the call.
21:04He forced Hicken to run in there.
21:06Comes in with a very positive attitude in one day cricket.
21:09Neil Fairbrother.
21:10Scores very quickly himself.
21:12And really looks for the runs.
21:13But.
21:13That was certainly a tight one.
21:23Gone for the shot.
21:25And it's found the boundary that.
21:28Far from the way that.
21:29Neil Fairbrother intended.
21:35Oh Fairbrother really riding his luck.
21:39He's played and missed outside off Stumpf.
21:42He's had a top edge hook.
21:44And now another top edge.
21:57That's four.
22:05And that's a lovely clever orthodox cricket shot.
22:22And that's the 50 partnership.
22:24And er.
22:26He's coming.
22:27Just only nine overs.
22:28A few more runs for Hick.
22:35Well Graham Hicks.
22:36Another player that's been made to struggle.
22:38To work hard for his runs.
22:40This is a lovely cricket shot.
22:42Thoughtful.
22:43Not trying to beat the ball.
22:44Just lets the ball come on.
22:45A lovely late cut.
22:47Beautifully played.
22:48Exquisitely played.
22:49The eighth for four.
22:59That's good shot.
23:01Beautiful late cut.
23:02He's played two late cuts today.
23:03That have been gems.
23:12All run four.
23:13Second of the day.
23:19direction for Dane.
23:31Two.
23:35Three.
23:36Three.
23:36There have been no better shot played today.
23:38Than that one.
23:40Three.
23:41Four.
23:42Four.
23:44He's played two.
23:48Three.
23:48Four.
23:49They came together when the score was 48, but it's now 1.51 for two.
24:11Graham Hick gets 50. 50 for England in an international match.
24:20The end of some great expectations, both of Graham Hick and the whole British cooking community.
24:32That's a thumping shot, tremendous straight batted pull shot.
24:39Well, I think that's the relief and confidence come from getting your first half century.
24:45Feeling great now is Graham Hick. Loosener from Marshall, short of a land and just whips this away.
24:52A short-arm jab and it raced away to mid-wickage. Lovely shot.
25:06Amazing shot, really. Fetched it.
25:08He wants the second one.
25:11And it was really a sprinting job. A lovely throw from the boundary.
25:18But nothing West Indies could do. Stops the 200 coming up.
25:31Phil Simmonds.
25:40Well, this is wonderful stuff.
25:46Short it may have been, but this is the real fair brother that's done this sort of stuff for Lancashire
25:53over the last three or four seasons.
25:55One of the most destructive of batsmen.
26:06Here's Patrick Patterson.
26:22Well, dear me, now we're seeing some of the form that has delighted and thrilled Worcestershire supporters for several years.
26:34Such a powerful man and it's almost as though one sees the chains coming off with each shot.
26:42Kirtley Ambrose is back and they've certainly run well and plenty of very, very tight singles.
26:48I think Graham Hick can be ready for the call.
26:59There it is.
27:01What a cheer he's got.
27:03It's a wonderful hundred.
27:05Very close to being a match-winning one.
27:08And, well, it's been a long time for Neil Fairbrother.
27:12Virtually all downs and very few ups in the international scene, but this is the breakthrough possibly for him.
27:33That's a massive shot.
27:36It really is.
27:37That's a wonderful shot.
27:40Wasn't pulled, it was picked up.
27:42And the eye and timing from that little man Neil Fairbrother there was terrific.
27:49Well, it really is full of confidence now.
27:51This is a good length ball from Patterson.
27:52He just flips it away, picks it up, just on the rise.
27:5748 for two when he came in and...
28:01Run rate now is nearly going to baffle the computer.
28:13Only four.
28:18Well, this is a young man being absolutely dismissive of the fast bowler.
28:23He's so confident now and cocky with his sentry behind him.
28:28He's just dismissed that good length ball from Patterson, just swatted it away over the leg side.
28:41Well, that just might be out, and is.
28:45Disappointing end, but I think Neil Fairbrother will get the sort of reception reserve for very few people at Lord's.
28:53Just listen to this one.
29:02Well, a sporting shake of the hands there by the West Indians there.
29:06Bloody one has been a fantastic innings.
29:08Not seen any better one day innings as that.
29:15Terrific player.
29:16All action it's been.
29:18Up and down the pitch for singles for his own and the other batsmen.
29:21Shots all around the wicket.
29:24What a glorious day for him.
29:26Yes, you might as well look round Neil Fairbrother.
29:28Look round and enjoy it.
29:29Everybody here at Lord's stood to applaud him.
29:32Thoroughly deserved.
29:38What a shame it should come to an end.
29:40Patrick Patterson going wide of the crease.
29:42Just altering the line, the angle to him.
29:45But unfortunately it was on to him.
29:47Hit the splice and just lobbed it quite easily for Viv Richards to take the catch.
29:53Two hundred and thirteen the partnership was worth.
29:56Two hundred and thirteen the partnership was worth.
30:23Not really.
30:23It was all about Hick and Fairbrother and it was record breaking.
30:27Fairbrother first hundred by an England player against the West Indies in one day cricket in England.
30:32And that third wicket stand of 213, the highest third wicket stand for England against anyone in one day cricket
30:38before.
30:40Partnership of 213 off 192 balls.
30:43It was sensational stuff and terrific entertainment for the crowd.
30:47Hard work then for the West Indies bowlers.
30:49There were wicket takers but only two.
30:51Patterson one for 62 and Marshall one for 49.
30:56And so England won this third match by seven wickets and they won the series 3-0.
31:02And of course on the balcony afterwards Graham Booch was there to accept the Texaco trophy.
31:09Colin Cowdery nominated the man of the match and he obviously elected Neil Fairbrother.
31:17The man of the series competition was won for the West Indies by Vivian Richards, their captain.
31:22And England's man of the series was Michael Atherton.
31:26One that.
