00:00:00First day's play in the fourth test match at the Adelaide Oval with the rubber score one win each
00:00:14and one tie. Frank Worrell repeats his Sydney success with the coin and has no hesitation in
00:00:19batting. In near century heat West Indies openers Cammie Smith batting without a cap and Conrad Hunt
00:00:25make their way to the wicket and West Australian Des Hoare bowls his first ball in test cricket
00:00:30which Conrad Hunt forces past square leg for two. Martin is 12th man for Australia while the West
00:00:37Indies are sticking to the team which won at Sydney. Hoare tends to be inaccurate in his opening
00:00:41over and Hunt punishes anything loose getting four from the square drive. By the end of his first
00:00:47over Hoare is working up quite a lot of pace and his last ball wraps Hunt on the pad.
00:00:55Six runs from Hoare's first over, a typical West Indies opening and Frank Misson takes over from the
00:01:01other end bowling to Cammie Smith who's off the mark with a single into the covers. Hunt has established a
00:01:08reputation as a vicious hooker and when Misson bowls anything hookable Hunt invariably has a go
00:01:13but not always with the success he'd like. Misson's opening over is no more accurate than Hoare's and
00:01:22when he bowls wide down the leg side umpire Hoyer judges it was out of Hunt's reach and the West Indies
00:01:28score mounts to the tune of three wides.
00:01:29Ten runs off the first two overs and when Hoare bowls again to Hunt there are more extras onto the
00:01:44total as Grout fumbles and the batsmen run through for two bites. Although the wicket has plenty of
00:01:50grass on it the anticipated early life is not yet evident but there's trouble ahead when Hoare bowls again.
00:01:55Hunt is beaten and after a moment's hesitation umpire eager upholds the confident Australian appeal
00:02:06for LBW. A proud moment for West Australian speedster Des Hoare as he receives his teammates
00:02:11congratulations on taking his first wicket in test cricket. Hunt out for six, West Indies one for twelve
00:02:17and Rowan Kanhai the new batsman. With the early wicket to inspire him Hoare bowls with tremendous fire
00:02:25and Kanhai is none too confident for a start. Kanhai's opening score is a quick single into the covers
00:02:34and in the general confusion umpire eager almost takes a tumble. Des Hoare a successful Sheffield Shield
00:02:43cricketer for West Australia this season has been given his chance in the Australian 11 following
00:02:48the injury to leading fast bowler Alan Davidson in the Sydney test and the fiery and enthusiastic
00:02:53newcomer seems determined to justify the confidence the Australian selectors have placed in him.
00:02:57He almost breaks through again when he beats Cammy Smith and sends grout diving but the wicket
00:03:03keeper is quick to indicate that as far as he's concerned there's no possibility of a chance.
00:03:07Misson continues the attack and has Kanhai feeling but fortunately for the volatile Kanhai he doesn't
00:03:17get a touch and when Misson bowls again Kanhai makes no mistake with a superb hook which rattles the
00:03:22pickets. The speed of the ball can be gauged from the fact that Kanhai doesn't have to move.
00:03:26One for 24 after half an hour's cricket and the score is further added to in Misson's next over by a
00:03:34most un-Kanhai looking stroke but nevertheless it was worth three runs.
00:03:45When Hoare bowls again Cammy Smith shows that he too is on the lookout for runs
00:03:49this shot to mid wicket bringing a sharply run too.
00:03:57Hoare is still bowling with plenty of devil and when Cammy Smith attempts to hit the fast bowler out of the
00:04:01ground Bobby Simpson's reaction is but to scratch his head in wonder. Up to this stage it's been a
00:04:07good battle by stroke making batsmen against fairly accurate bowling and the mid-session drinks in
00:04:12century heat are welcome relief both to the players and to the big crowd of about 25 000.
00:04:19Following the break medium pacer Mackay is brought into the attack and Richie Benno wearing a cap an
00:04:25unusual sight. When Mackay bowls to Kanhai he turns him to mid wicket and moves off for the single but good
00:04:31fielding by Misson causes the batsmen to change their minds but there's no doubt at all about Kanhai's
00:04:36classical cover drive straight to the boundary and when it's followed by a well-executed square cut
00:04:41it seems as though this is going to be Kanhai's day this type of batting is catching and Cammy
00:04:54Smith comes to the party to swing Mackay away past square leg for yet another boundary
00:04:59it's crowd-pleasing cricket all right and when Misson changes to the northern end there are more runs
00:05:04as Kanhai literally turns the fast bowler off his hip to find leg and then sees his partner
00:05:09Smith cut Misson to deep third man for three more bringing Lindsay Klein into the picture
00:05:24Misson concedes more runs in this over when Kanhai straight drives him for three
00:05:29to bring up the West Indies 50 in 46 minutes
00:05:34right throughout this tour the popular visitors have scored it close to a run a minute
00:05:38and the opening day of the fourth test match in Adelaide is no exception
00:05:51when Richie Benno comes on to bowl for the first time it's all the same to Kanhai
00:05:55as he swings him high over square leg for the first six of the match
00:05:59it's an eventful over from the Australian captain to Kanhai and includes as well as the six an attempted
00:06:04square cut and an edge just wide of Simpson at slip
00:06:15the run a minute rate is maintained and after 75 minutes of play the West Indies won for 72
00:06:21with Kanhai outscoring Smith and forcing Benno to bring Klein on in an attempt to quieten the free scoring
00:06:27West Indians the time being at any rate the Victorian spinner does just that and his first over to
00:06:33is smooth as a maiden and includes a near thing following some smart work by grout behind the stumps
00:07:03when Benno bowls again the avalanche continues as Kanhai unfolds some superb off drives and helps himself to 11 runs
00:07:21but Benno remains unperturbed and when he bowls to Smith he's rewarded with a court and bold and the West Indies
00:07:39have lost their second wicket Smith out for 28 the West Indies now two for 83 with Garfield Sobers the new batsman
00:07:46Sobers watches Benno carefully and plays out the remainder of the over
00:07:55Klein continues the attack and after a single from Kanhai Sobers is off the mark with this
00:08:00none too confident cover drive on the other hand Kanhai's cover drive is chock full of confidence
00:08:06and it brings up one of the most attractive 50s seen on the Adelaide oval for a long time
00:08:11scored in just over an hour and full of irresistible stroke making the crowd has no longer stopped
00:08:18applauding Kanhai's 50 when they're stunned by Sobers dismissal bold Benno with Sobers in this series
00:08:25it's almost been a case of all or nothing at all the world test record holder is out for one
00:08:30and the West Indies now in a spot of bother with three down for 91 Benno having taken two for 20 and
00:08:36skipper Frank Worrell joining the dashing Kanhai
00:08:51Benno bowls again and Worrell is quickly off the mark with a single forward of point
00:08:57Kanhai is still anxious to score as many runs as quickly as he can and perhaps his skipper Frank
00:09:02Worrell tells him that he's too valuable to run himself out at this stage of a grand innings
00:09:10Klein continues the attack and bowls a maiden to Worrell including a shot back past the bowler
00:09:15which might possibly have been a chance of a court and bow
00:09:24the last ball of a good over from Klein Worrell hit on the pads
00:09:27and Klein asks umpire eager whether he might be LBW but the answer is no
00:09:34there's more excitement in Benno's next over with Kanhai edging just wide of Simpson at slip
00:09:39Simpson almost bringing off a miraculous catch
00:09:44Kanhai is far from worried by the closeness of the incident
00:09:48and he proceeds to square cut Benno with merciless power straight to the fence
00:09:53it seems as though nothing can stop the flow of runs from Kanhai's bat
00:09:56and at this stage of the day Australian skipper Richie Benno is the principal sufferer
00:10:08the West Indies 100 comes up in Clines next over as Kanhai pulls the spinner through mid wicket for four
00:10:14it's been a pretty eventful 100 which has been scored exactly in even time
00:10:17and of the 103 runs Kanhai has scored 61. there are runs aplenty in Klein's next over too
00:10:24after Kanhai cover drives for a single Worrell plays a powerful onside stroke which brings him four
00:10:30in Benno's next over it's Kanhai's turn again as he takes seven runs from powerful onside strokes
00:10:58Benno bowls the last ball before lunch to Worrell and as the players leave the field the West Indies
00:11:14three for 133 and when fast bowler Hoare bowls to Kanhai he suffers the indignity of being hit
00:11:21high over mid wicket for six the second time in this innings Kanhai has hit an Australian bowler over
00:11:26the fence
00:11:32when Hoare bowls again Kanhai once more demonstrates that he's really in the mood for scoring
00:11:37and he's giving the big crowd of 25,000 at the Adelaide Oval a feast of batting at its most
00:11:41entertaining best
00:11:45hard as he tries Hoare can't stem the flow of runs and when he bowls now to Worrell the West Indies
00:11:50captain places him through mid wicket where Mcdonald chases as the batsmen run too
00:12:02Benno continues the attack bowling to Kanhai and although the perky little West Indian doesn't
00:12:07attempt to score off every ball if there's a run to be had he'll go for it even when O'Neil returns with
00:12:12deadly accuracy
00:12:16now watch as first Worrell and then Kanhai take seven runs off Benno with perfectly executed strokes
00:12:37with the West Indies score past the 150 in better than even time Benno brings Klein back into the
00:12:56attack but it's all the same to Kanhai as he brilliantly square cuts the spinner for yet another boundary
00:13:07Kanhai's century seems inevitable and it comes when he on drives Klein for three
00:13:22Kanhai's innings has been a crowd-pleasing affair and his blazing hundred has matched Adelaide's
00:13:27century heat with the batsmen right on top there's no let up in the attractive rate of scoring and
00:13:32Worrell's majestic square cut sends Makai on another hopeless chase to the boundary
00:13:40despite some encouragement from Benno Klein isn't the bowler to break the partnership
00:13:44and when Worrell repeats his previous stroke it's four more under the West Indies total
00:13:48when Benno Bowls again Kanhai gets him away for a single and then we see just how Frank Worrell treats
00:14:03deliveries from Richie Benno pitched outside the leg stump
00:14:06a great innings comes to an end when Benno Bowls to Kanhai Kanhai edges and Simpson takes the catch at slip
00:14:22Kanhai has made 117 in 149 minutes including 14 fours and two sixes surely one of the most brilliant test
00:14:29centuries for a long time with Worrell still there on 39 Seymour Nurse joins his skipper and when Benno Bowls it
00:14:36doesn't take the new batsmen long to join in the scoring spree nurse's square cut brings two runs and
00:14:42takes the West Indies score to four for 200 which has been scored at better than a run a minute
00:14:50Adelaide's shade temperature is 105 degrees and it's obvious that the West Indies batsmen are reveling
00:14:55in the conditions while for the Australian fieldsman the sight of 12th man Johnny Martin with the drinks
00:15:01is like a mirage come true Benno brings Hoare back into the attack to bowl with the new ball to Worrell
00:15:06and after a welcome sighter the West Indies captain flings his bat high in the air in an attempt to hit
00:15:12Hoare out of the ground the ball falls safely in the covers and it's two more on the Worrell score
00:15:17Misson is Hoare's partner with the new ball but when he bowls to nurse he's greeted by a fluent on drive
00:15:32Babel cuts off the boundary but the batsmen take three bringing Worrell to face Misson
00:15:47Worrell skies Misson into the covers towards O'Neill but he can't make the catch
00:15:51and Worrell has a life and gets a single out of the incident
00:15:57Misson now to nurse and the swing to square leg by nurse for four brings up the West Indies 250 for
00:16:03the loss of four wickets made in 223 minutes and also the 50 partnership between Worrell and nurse
00:16:09eight more runs are added before T when the score is four for 258 with Worrell on 62 and nurse 30 and
00:16:18after the interval when Hoare bowls to Worrell a flashing square drive again sets the scoreboard moving
00:16:24but these are destined to be Frank Worrell's last runs in this innings
00:16:36Hoare bowls again and Worrell after a grand innings pushes an easy catch straight to Misson at short
00:16:41square leg Worrell's 71 took just under three hours and included 10 fours and the West Indies have lost
00:16:47five for 271 with Solomon joining nurse on 39 Solomon takes guard from umpire eager and treats
00:16:55Hall with due respect for the remainder of the over
00:17:01the Australians are sticking manfully to their task in the scorching heat and soon after Worrell's
00:17:06dismissal Frank Misson strikes another blow when he takes a brilliant catch off his own bowling to
00:17:11dismiss nurse much to the joy of Australian captain Richie Benno who's first on the scene to congratulate
00:17:17Misson the West Indies now six for 288 and the honors of the first day pretty evenly divided
00:17:23vice captain Jerry Alexander century maker in Sydney is next to the wicket
00:17:27and he wastes no time in getting off the mark with a single defined leg
00:17:37then with half an hour to stumps and the West Indies total over 300
00:17:40Benno comes on from the northern end and has immediate success when he catches Solomon off his own bowling
00:17:47Solomon has played a patient innings scoring 22 in an hour and his wicket makes the West Indies score
00:17:52seven for 316 and gives Benno the excellent bowling figures of four for 78
00:18:00next batsman is off spinner Lance Gibbs who took eight wickets at his first appearance against
00:18:04Australia in Sydney and when Benno bowls Gibbs indicates that at least he's prepared to try and
00:18:09push the score along even if his efforts aren't always crowned with success but with Alexander scoring the
00:18:14runs the pair see out the remaining overs and it stumps on the first day the West Indies score is
00:18:20seven for 348 with Alexander not out 38 and Gibbs not out three
00:18:29conditions are most unpleasant for the start of the second day's play with the city of Adelaide
00:18:33covered in a pool of dust whipped up by a northerly wind and the temperature again close to the century
00:18:38the West Indies seven for 348 and it's generally conceded that they're safe from defeat particularly of the
00:18:44tail end batsman assisted by Alexander can add another 50 or so runs Gibbs opens the scoring
00:18:50proceedings for the morning with a single off Klein and Jerry Alexander approved fighter in this series
00:18:56swings Klein to square leg for his first score of the day
00:19:10Benno alternates spin with speed and when Hoare comes on he crashes through Alexander's defense
00:19:15appealing unsuccessfully for LBW
00:19:25Alexander's glance to fine leg brings him a single and when Hoare bowls again to Gibbs there's almost a
00:19:30chance when a rising ball outside the off stump is edged between grout and first slip Simpson
00:19:36in the ensuing mix-up the batsmen both eventually complete two runs
00:19:45Gibbs is playing in extremely valuable innings and when he cuts Hoare through the slips for four
00:20:02it brings up the 50 partnership between he and Alexander for the eighth cricket
00:20:0619 runs are added in the first 25 minutes with Alexander 47 and Gibbs 13 and in Hoare's next over
00:20:12there are more runs from Gibbs bat when he sends McDonald on a long chase out towards the mid-wicket
00:20:17boundary
00:20:23after a fruitless spell Klein gives way to his skipper Richie Benno from the river end and while the leg
00:20:28spinner can't break the partnership he at least keep keeps Gibbs quiet with a maiden over
00:20:43four is relieved by Misson and when he bowls to Alexander the West Indies wicket keeper forces on
00:20:49the onside to take his score on to 49
00:21:00there's Alexander's 50 his fourth for the series one in every test but soon after he loses Gibbs bowled by
00:21:06Misson for 18 and bringing the colourful fast bowler Wesley Hall to the wicket
00:21:11it's no exaggeration to say that when Hall's there there's always something doing and for proof watch this
00:21:25yes it's all in a day's work for Wesley Hall unquestionably as far as the public is concerned
00:21:30one of the most popular cricketers ever to come to this country when Misson bowls again Alexander
00:21:36decides to really let go but the ball is in grout's gloves and not over the fence
00:21:40now for the next few seconds let's watch the adventures of Wesley Hall illustrated by Richie Benno
00:21:51it's absorbing cricket and the crowd loves every minute of it and when Misson bowls again Alexander
00:22:06continues to attack the bowling his well-timed cut past gully making good pace to the bow
00:22:25in Misson's next over there's more incident with Wesley Hall again the central figure
00:22:29a tremendous pull shot by Hall and after completing two runs the giant fast bowler thinks about a third
00:22:45with very nearly disastrous results for Jerry Alexander
00:22:48far from upsetting Hall's equilibrium the incident seems to inspire his confidence
00:23:01and this single takes the West Indies score into the 390s but Hall's merry stay at the wicket comes
00:23:06to an end in Benno's next over when he's caught by Hoare for five Alexander is still there unconquered at 62
00:23:14and the West Indies total now a highly respectable 9 for 392
00:23:26Misson now bowls to Alexander and his single brings the last batsman Alf Valentine to face the speedster
00:23:44and it's no surprise when his speed beats him he's wrapped on the pads and has given out LBW
00:23:54Valentine no score Alexander not out 63 the West Indies all out for 393 Benno taking the bowling honours
00:24:02with five for 96 with a packed behind the wicket field Wesley Hall bowls the first ball of the innings to
00:24:07Colin McDonald as the giant West Indies fast bowler goes back on his long run of 30 yards tossing the
00:24:13ball from hand to hand one wonders what devilment he's up to but once he unleashes his thunderbolts
00:24:19the batsman has only a fraction of a second to think about it
00:24:25McDonald's leg glances just wide of the diving sobers at leg slip and it's through to the boundary to start
00:24:30McDonald's and the Australian total on its long chase when Hall bowls outside the off stump McDonald
00:24:36is more confident and his square cut is worth only three thanks to a fine last minute save by Lance Gibbs
00:24:47three to McDonald brings Favell to face Hall and he's off the mark when he turns the fast bowler to
00:24:52square leg for a single but that single is destined to be Favell's only run as when Worrell bowls from
00:25:01the other end Favell attempts to swing him away and is out to a fine diving catch by Alexander inches from
00:25:06the ground it's a wonderful start by the West Indies and the move to open with Favell has failed badly
00:25:12with Australia one wicket for nine and Norman O'Neill coming to the crease virtually as an opening batsman
00:25:23Worrell bowls and O'Neill is quickly off the mark with a confident shot off his toes to mid wicket
00:25:28it's another scorching day in Adelaide but as lunch approaches the long-awaited cool change is almost
00:25:32a reality but there's nothing cool about a Hall no ball which O'Neill swings away for a single
00:25:38when O'Neill thinks about a second run he soon sees it's just as well he didn't go
00:25:43there's still plenty of life in Hall's bowling and McDonald does well to play a rising ball into
00:25:48the covers for a single after a shaky start McDonald and O'Neill appear to be consolidating
00:25:53and at lunch the Australian score is one for 18. After lunch Worrell continues the attack and both
00:26:01McDonald and O'Neill get runs with favourite strokes a square cut from McDonald and a fine straight drive
00:26:06by O'Neill
00:26:21with the temperature now many degrees cooler Worrell bowls sobers for Hall to change ends
00:26:26and McDonald fully appreciates anything loose from the left-hander
00:26:35the big crowd gets full value for their money when Hall does bowl from the river end as a typical
00:26:40Hall bumper has McDonald ducking smartly and in the process tearing his trousers
00:26:45McDonald makes a hasty exit from the Adelaide Oval and after making the necessary alterations is
00:26:50quickly back at the wicket
00:27:04once back at the crease McDonald demonstrates immediately that in spite of the fact that his
00:27:08trousers were disturbed his concentration certainly isn't as he calmly square cuts Wesley Hall
00:27:13the versatile sobers superb batsman brilliant fieldsman and high-class bowler is retained in
00:27:23the attack by Worrell but in this over sober's bowling holds no terrors for the batsman and both
00:27:28McDonald and O'Neill score freely off the left-hander McDonald and O'Neill appear to be well on the
00:27:34way to a useful partnership and the score gradually mounts but it's not long before McDonald loses O'Neill
00:27:39caught behind by Alexander off sober's and with the Australian score at two for 45 the new batsman
00:27:46is Simpson who wastes no time in getting off the mark with a confident shot off sober's
00:27:53at this stage the crowd is not appreciative of the fact that Hall is taking almost eight minutes to
00:27:57bowl and over so let's watch the giant speedster in slow motion as he comes tearing down the wicket
00:28:02a perfect model for any budding fast bowler with his graceful action
00:28:06when McDonald faces Hall again he's met with yet another fiery bumper but the solid Victorians
00:28:13reflexes are equal to the occasion after Hall's incendiary barrage sober's bowling is a cool change
00:28:20and it's gratefully appreciated by both batsmen
00:28:38now for the first time Worrell brings Gibbs into the attack the off spinner took eight wickets in his
00:28:43first test in Sydney and as he goes back to get Wesley Hall's marker he must be wondering whether he can
00:28:48repeat his success on the Adelaide wicket McDonald watches Gibbs closely and finds his adversary quite
00:28:54enthusiastic about throwing down his wicket but when the off spinner bowls again the Australian opener
00:29:00cover drives for a single to take his score on to 49
00:29:06there'll be genuine applause when the popular McDonald reaches his half century and it comes in
00:29:11sobers next over when he gets a single to mid wicket McDonald's 50 has taken him 136 minutes
00:29:18and it's been a typical fighting McDonald knock but eventually it's off spinner Gibbs who claims his
00:29:23wicket here's a slow motion study of the latest West Indies menace to Australian batsmen
00:29:33McDonald swings Gibbs to backward square leg and he's brilliantly caught by Conrad Hunt
00:29:38Mcdonald has made 71 his highest score for the series and has been instrumental in taking the
00:29:42score to a respectable three for 119 and Queenslander Peter Burge the new batsman
00:29:48immediately setting about attacking the bowler
00:30:01wicket keeper Alexander is a minor casualty but after some treatment from Garfield Sobers
00:30:05he's back on the job to see Peter Burge play some of the most attractive cricket of the day
00:30:10the Queenslander selection had been criticized in some critic cricket circles but he quickly
00:30:15demonstrates that he's prepared to hit the ball and subdue Worrell's varied attack
00:30:24it's crowd-pleasing cricket and when left arm spinner valentine bowls
00:30:28Simpson and Burge continue their run a minute partnership with some smart running between the wickets
00:30:35in the brightest scoring period of the day both Burge and Simpson score freely off Gibbs
00:30:49all the time brightening Australia's chances of scoring a total somewhere approaching the West Indies score
00:30:54of 393
00:31:02Burge's on drive brings up Australia's 150 in just on three hours for the loss of three wickets
00:31:08indicating that the game is wide open and with Burge's example instilling added confidence into his
00:31:13partner Simpsons turns valentine to mid wicket for a single to bring up his 50 a half century warmly
00:31:19applauded by the enthusiastic Adelaide crowd
00:31:28both batsmen now appear to be well set and when valentine bowls outside the leg stump
00:31:33first Burge and then Simpson add seven runs onto the Australian total
00:31:52it's four to Simpson and it brings up the 50 partnership between Simpson and Burge and then
00:31:57in fading light Hall is brought back into the attack however both Simpson and Burge seem to be seeing
00:32:02the ball so well at this stage that not even Hall holds any terrors for them
00:32:18the other end Gibbs continues the attack and with Burge playing attractive strokes all around the wicket
00:32:33the Australian position is improving all the time
00:32:35a clinking cover drive off the back foot indicates that Burge is happy to play his natural attacking game
00:32:48and the resultant boundary somehow seems to vindicate his judgment
00:32:52it's Hall at the other end and he seems to go so far back to begin his run that there's time for a breather
00:32:57and when he does bowl it's a no ball one of nine bowled by Hall on the second day of this test
00:33:02in spite of Hall's lack of success he still retains typical Hall enthusiasm
00:33:07and as always entertains the spectators if not Bobby Simpson
00:33:19with Burge and Simpson now in charge Worrell relieves Hall
00:33:22only to see a confident and graceful Simpson back cut go speeding out towards the boundary
00:33:27but fine fielding and a brilliant return by Kanhai restricts the scoring to two
00:33:43although Worrell bowls round the wicket in an effort to get more movement
00:33:46both Burge and Simpson continue to play their strokes
00:33:52and the Australian total to three for 200 in 250 minutes
00:34:00Burge is 40 and he makes only five more before Sobers strikes a telling blow for the West Indies
00:34:05clean bowling Peter Burge
00:34:07Burge is 45 took him 92 minutes and he and Simpson added 94 to take the total to four for 213
00:34:14and bringing Australian captain Richie Benno to the wicket
00:34:17with Stumps only 10 minutes away Benno wisely takes no risks and undoubtedly passes on his thoughts to Simpson
00:34:32in Worrell's next over Benno opens his account and at Stumps on the second day the Australian score stands at four for 221
00:34:39172 behind with Simpson on 85 and Benno won
00:34:43the third day's play begins with an impressive ceremony to mark Australia day honoring the country's 173rd birthday
00:34:50and when the West Indies team takes the field conditions are the most pleasant for the test so far
00:34:55Wesley Hall's limbering up includes some ballet exercises and he's about to bowl a superb over
00:35:01the first ball of the morning with Bob Simpson the batsman
00:35:09then when Hall bowls a perfect outswinger finding the edge of Simpson's tentative bat
00:35:13Jerry Alexander dives to take a magnificent catch
00:35:17Simpson has batted for 209 minutes for his 85 the second time in this series he's been out when in striking distance of his century
00:35:24and Australia now five for 221 with Ken Mackay the new batsman
00:35:28Hall bowling like a demon but Mackay survives the over and gets off the mark with a typical shot
00:35:36Worrell uses Sobers to partner Hall in the opening attack and the left-hander does his job by bowling
00:35:41a maiden over to Mackay
00:35:45when Hall bowls again Richie Benno takes advantage of deliveries outside the leg stump to help himself to
00:35:50five valuable runs causing Worrell to strengthen his onside field
00:36:04there's more action in Halls next over when he appeals confidently for a catch behind against Mackay
00:36:25Mackay is quite unconcerned indicating that the ball had hit him on the shirt under the armpit but for his
00:36:31explanation he's rewarded with a Hall thunderbolt in the shape of a vicious bouncer
00:36:40Hall is bowling like a man inspired but in typical imperturbable style Mackay pushes to cover point
00:36:46and adds two more to his score it's generally conceded that this partnership is vital to
00:36:51Australia's chances of reaching the West Indies total of 393 and the tense cricket
00:36:55has the great crowd of over 30 000 right on its toes
00:37:01Sobers again and both batsmen take singles
00:37:11Benno's flashing shot past point brings up the Australian 250 and they're now only 143 behind
00:37:17having avoided any possibility of a follow-on
00:37:19that's what's going on
00:37:22Gibbs is brought into the attack and after a period of defense Mackay opens out with a cut through the
00:37:27slips for four the boundary brings up a valuable 50 partnership between Mackay and his captain
00:37:32but soon after Lance Gibbs begins a devastating and historic piece of bowling
00:37:37Mackay is out LBW to Gibbs for 29 and the Australian total six for 281 with drought the new batsman
00:37:44Gibbs bowls his next ball to grout grout edges and sobers takes the catch at leg slip Australia seven
00:37:56for 281 and Frank Misson interface a hatchet Gibbs bowls Misson is beaten and bowled and Lance Gibbs has
00:38:04taken the first ever hat trick in Australia West Indies test matches a triumphant moment for the young
00:38:09off spinner in three balls he's seen the Australian score slumping from five for 281 to eight for 281
00:38:16and the Australian captain is on hand with his congratulations too
00:38:20a big change has come over the game and although Benno's still there playing confidently it looks
00:38:25as though the Australian innings may fold up but that's not the theory of Des Hoare playing his first
00:38:30test as you see Hoare believes that he has a bat to hit the ball and that's exactly what he does
00:38:35everyone loves a tail end batsman particularly when he makes frequent contact with the ball
00:38:42and Des Hoare must have won 30 000 friends at the Adelaide Oval by this display
00:38:47Benno is playing a real captain's innings and his lofted on drive takes the Australian score to
00:38:52eight for 302 at lunch when Hall bowls Hoare continues on from where he left off before lunch in a fighting
00:38:58ninth wicket partnership with his captain Richie Benno after Gibbs sensational hat trick before lunch
00:39:04Australian stocks have slumped but the Australian skipper is doing his best to retrieve the position
00:39:15Benno's receiving valuable if unexpected support from the west Australian fast bowler Des Hoare
00:39:20who collects more useful runs in this over from Hall
00:39:35when Benno faces Hall again a forcing cut forward of point has Seymour nurse chasing
00:39:40and it's two more to Benno making a total of seven runs from Hall's first over after lunch
00:39:45hoping for a repeat of his pre-lunch success Worrell uses Gibbs but a front foot sweep by Hoare soon
00:39:51dispels any doubts about his ability to play the spinner and when the tail ender plays a similar
00:39:56but less forcing shot off Gibbs it's beginning to look as though Australia may get reasonably close
00:40:01to the West Indies total after all in Gibbs next over Benno swings the spinner away through mid wicket
00:40:12to bring up his 50 it's Benno's fifth four and his half century takes him just under two and a half
00:40:17hours a most timely innings from the Australian viewpoint but there are plenty more runs to come
00:40:22from Benno's back yet and Hoare too is still playing his part well
00:40:33Worrell's next move is to bring left arm spinner Valentine into the attack but Hoare still picks
00:40:37up runs on the onside whereas Benno is content to watch Valentine carefully before attempting to play
00:40:43strokes
00:40:49in Gibbs next over a confident appeal for LBW against Hoare is disallowed by umpire Hoare
00:40:55and when Gibbs bowls outside the leg stomp both Hoare and Benno gratefully accept the chance to push
00:41:00the Australian total along
00:41:11by contrast Valentine is able to subdue Benno at this stage although it's obvious that Benno is after
00:41:17the runs
00:41:21a good ball from Valentine and Benno is forced to change his mind
00:41:24it's a great fight at the moment with the batsmen temporarily on top
00:41:28Benno and Hoare having added a sterling 50 for the ninth wicket
00:41:33Hoare gets Gibbs away for a single to fine leg and in the off spin as same over Benno brings out
00:41:37a forcing cover drive which has Kanai scurrying out into the deep to cut off the boundary and reducing
00:41:43the scoring to three
00:41:47Hoare gets another chance to play his favourite shot but this time he misses and when Gibbs bowls again
00:41:52Hoare treats him with due respect
00:41:58Valentine bowls again and both Benno and Hoare play him confidently to put Australia within
00:42:0550 runs of the West Indies total
00:42:08Richie Benno's batting capabilities have been well known for a long time
00:42:11but Des Hoare batting at number 10 is proving a real surprise packet
00:42:15as he certainly hasn't been selected in the Australian team for his ability with the bat
00:42:20Nevertheless he's showing plenty of fighting qualities and his cover drive is worth another single
00:42:33Gibbs to Benno and when the Australian captain goes on the defensive
00:42:36Alexander comes into the picture with an enthusiastic dash from behind the stumps
00:42:40but this time Benno throws caution to the winds and the ball finishes up at the mid wicket boundary
00:42:53drinks indicate that Benno and Hoare have defied the West Indies attack for an hour since lunch
00:42:58and when Sobers comes into the attack Benno thumps him hard to square leg
00:43:02Sobers bowls again and down goes Hoare's front foot
00:43:09as the batsmen race through for the single and the return comes back to Alexander
00:43:14watch the wicket keepers amazing backward movement to take the return
00:43:17almost resulting in Hoare being run out
00:43:19as it turns out it's destined to be Hoare's last run
00:43:22after a single from Benno off this shot to mid wicket Hoare again faces the bowling of Sobers
00:43:34a tremendous swing by Hoare and he's bowled ending a ninth wicket partnership of 85
00:43:39a wonderful effort by Hoare to make 35 and the Australian total now 9 to 366
00:43:45with the last batsman Klein to face Sobers
00:43:47well outside Klein's leg stump and he sees out Sobers over then when Gibbs bowls again Benno decides
00:43:57the time has come to hit out or get out with the number 11 batsman in with him and so he puts the
00:44:02policy into practice but it proves fatal in the same over from Gibbs when his huge swing allows
00:44:07Solomon to take a fine catch at mid on Richie Benno has put together an excellent 77 and the Australian
00:44:14total is 366 only 27 runs short of the West Indies score Lance Gibbs takes the bowling honours with
00:44:20five for 97 remarkably similar to Benno's five for 96 in the West Indies innings
00:44:30the Australians take the field with a little over half an hour to tee and when Des Hoare opens the
00:44:35attack for the second time Conrad Hunt is quickly off the mark and the West Indies are in fact none for 28
00:44:44when Hoare bowls again umpire eager is quick to note his drag but Cammy Smith isn't able to put away
00:44:50the no ball
00:44:53Hoare again and when Cammy Smith cuts over the slips heads for four it's the first of 10 boundaries
00:44:58he's to score in his stay of only an hour at the wickets
00:45:05it's a typical Cammy Smith opening to the West Indies innings and when Misson bowls from the other end
00:45:10he finds Conrad Hunt anxious to score too
00:45:19but Misson is working up a fair amount of pace and twice in his opening over he beats Hunt's bat
00:45:25and on the second occasion the appeal from Misson and the Australian fieldsman is so confident that
00:45:30they're surprised to see umpire Hoare completely unmoved
00:45:38having no success with his pace attack Benno himself takes the ball and bowls to Cammy Smith
00:45:48Smith is not the type of batsman to be shackled for too long and it's no surprise when he slams Benno
00:45:53with a powerful square cut straight to the fence
00:46:03outside the off stump again and Cammy repeats the stroke but this time the shot's worth only two
00:46:08something out of the ordinary for Cammy Smith in this innings
00:46:11at T Smith on 25 is well ahead of Hunt and the West Indies are none for 38
00:46:16after T the West Indies are back on the attack and a good looking off drive by Hunt off Misson
00:46:25brings up the 50 in even time with West Indies now 77 runs on and all wickets still intact Benno brings
00:46:32McKay into the attack and the medium pacer almost has success when he beats Hunt's bat and appeals
00:46:37unsuccessfully for LBW it must have been very very close
00:46:47Hunt celebrates the let off by neatly turning McKay to find leg where Misson's miss field allows the
00:46:52batsman to take three and when Cammy Smith faces McKay a huge off drive means another four onto Cammy's score
00:46:59this time four all run
00:47:07the accurate McKay persists however and soon his patience is rewarded when Smith hits a comparatively
00:47:17simple catch to Hoare at wide mid off the West Indies lose their first wicket at 66 and of these
00:47:23the flashing bat of Cammy Smith has made 46 in 61 minutes including 10 boundaries
00:47:32Smith's dismissal brings first inning century maker Rowan Kanhai to the wicket
00:47:36and immediately he shows signs of beginning where he left off in the first innings
00:47:56Benno comes back into the attack from the opposite end and begins by bowling a maiden over to Conrad Hunt
00:48:01quite a rarity in this present series
00:48:05but when McKay bowls again both batsmen score freely with well-timed on strokes and already
00:48:11an ominous partnership is beginning to develop the second wicket stand continues unbroken until stumps
00:48:16when the total is one for 150 with Kanhai 59 and Hunt 44 giving the West Indies a lead of 177.
00:48:24the fourth day is fine and cool in Adelaide with a smaller crowd than for the previous three days
00:48:29when Lindsey Kline bowls the first over from the river end to Rowan Kanhai
00:48:36Kanhai opens the scoring proceedings for the morning when he square cuts Kline for a single
00:48:41and Hunt plays out the remainder of Kline's over without further score although he's badly beaten
00:48:46by the last ball a perfect wrong in which he fails to pick
00:48:49it's an all spin attack to begin with Benno operating from the northern or cathedral end bowling to Kanhai
00:49:07Simpson runs round from slip to field and he's in the picture again when Kanhai swings Benno to deep fine leg for three
00:49:13watch Simpson's magnificent return into Grouch gloves
00:49:26the next milestone in the morning's play is Conrad Hunt's 50 it comes when he swings Benno behind square leg for four
00:49:33a comparatively sedate 50 by Hunt taking 163 minutes and includes only two fours and it's also the hundred
00:49:41partnership between he and Kanhai in 97 minutes making the West Indies position stronger all the time
00:49:47Kline's next over is his most expensive costing him 10 runs let's watch these two fine stroke makers
00:49:53as they hit the Victorian spinner to all parts of the field
00:50:03Umpire Iger has no hesitation in calling a wide against Kline
00:50:23when Kline bowls again to Kanhai yet another Kanhai swing through mid-wicket again sends Des Hoare on a
00:50:40long chase hard work for a man soon to be called upon to bowl with the new ball
00:50:45Umpire. Although Benno's over is not so expensive as Kline's both Hunt and Kanhai push the West Indies score
00:51:03on towards the 200s
00:51:04Umpire.
00:51:08When Benno brings Misson into the attack Kanhai takes a cheeky single and has Misson attempting to throw
00:51:21down his wicket shades of things to come. The 200 comes up in Misson's over when Hunt turns him prettily to
00:51:30find leg for four.
00:51:41200 up in 193 minutes typical of the West Indies cricket and almost immediately Benno gives the new
00:51:47ball to Hoare although it makes little difference to Kanhai and Hunt. Hunt's hammer-like square drive
00:51:52races down to the fence giving Makai little chance of stopping it
00:52:03In spite of the new ball Kanhai makes great speed towards his second century of the match
00:52:07scoring freely off Misson
00:52:13This flashing cover drive by Kanhai another boundary takes his aggregate for this tour of Australia to
00:52:24over 1,000 runs. A thousand runs which are given pleasure to hundreds of thousands of Australian
00:52:29in cricket runners. Hunt two joins in the free scoring and this single takes his score to 79
00:52:48Kanhai's now on 99 anxious for that vital single but he doesn't connect every time. Now comes tragedy
00:52:54Benno brings three fieldsmen in close on the onside to cut off the short single
00:52:59but Kanhai can't resist the temptation and a brilliant piece of work by Misson runs Hunt out
00:53:03by interest. Hunt foolishly run out for 79 and the West Indies two for 229. A wonderful partnership of 163
00:53:13between Hunt and Kanhai and Kanhai is obviously greatly affected by the foolish mistake.
00:53:19Garfield sobers as the new batsman and there's almost further trouble when O'Neill's return very
00:53:24nearly hits the stumps from side on.
00:53:37Kanhai's second century for the match comes when he square cuts four for four. A wonderful achievement by
00:53:42the audacious little man from British Diana. A feat achieved only once before in Australia West Indies
00:53:47test matches by Clyde Walcott and the Australians are generous in their tributes to Kanhai.
00:53:58After a shaky start almost like a man batting from memory Sobers begins to unfold some fine strokes.
00:54:08Benno is soon back into the attack and the occasional ball gets through Sobers defense. At this stage,
00:54:27neither batsman is really comfortable as Kanhai still seems to be feeling the effects of the unfortunate
00:54:32runout. However, just before lunch Kanhai comes out of his shell with some fine shots.
00:54:39The West Indies at this stage 284 runs in front with eight wickets standing. Benno bowls the first
00:54:45ball after lunch to Kanhai and although Kanhai's fluent cover drive brings up no runs, when Benno bowls
00:54:51again Kanhai repeats the stroke, this time wide of the close-in field and getting a single.
00:55:02Kanhai's partner Garfield Sobers is still in nothing like his best form and his first 12 runs have been
00:55:07right out of character. When fair-haired Sydney fast bowler Frank Misson, a tiger for work, continues the
00:55:13attack, Kanhai drives into the covers to Hoare for a single and then Sobers with a neat flick gets
00:55:19missing away to mid-wicket for two more.
00:55:30And now with Benno to bowl, let's watch the closing stages of a great innings by Rowan Kanhai
00:55:35attacking right to the end.
00:55:49Benno bowls again, Kanhai attempts to pull him for four, is struck on the pads and given out LBW by
00:55:59umpire Hoy. What a great double by Rowan Kanhai, 117 and 115. It's Benno's 200th wicket in test cricket
00:56:07and he joins the select band of Bedser, Linwool and Grimmett. West Indies three for 263 with Warra Lin,
00:56:13but first Misson to Sobers and a single from a cut to third man.
00:56:20Worrell starts confidently enough when he does well to play a rising ball to fine leg for a single
00:56:25with Mcdonald fielding, but when Misson bowls again to Sobers, it's evident that the World Test
00:56:30record holder is still not timing the ball well as his attempted cover drive goes deep to mid on,
00:56:35beating the diving Misson and bringing Sobers three runs.
00:56:50In Benno's next over, Sobers drives off the back foot into the covers for a single
00:56:54and in taking a faster turn, Benno falls heavily hurting himself in the process.
00:56:59But Benno soon recovers and when he bowls again to a not too confident Worrell,
00:57:03he sees an uppish shot from Worrell go skidding into the covers.
00:57:11But in Misson's next over, after Sobers gets a single, the West Indies lose another wicket.
00:57:16Worrell goes for a quick single and Misson, picking up smartly, throws the wicket down to run Sobers out.
00:57:21It's Misson's second run out in exactly the same manner, his previous victim being Hunt.
00:57:26Sobers has made a painstaking 20 in 80 minutes and the West Indies are four for 270, 297 in front
00:57:33with Seymour Nurse very nearly getting an outside edge off Misson.
00:57:42Benno bowls again and Nurse's cover drive is a much more confident affair, so much so that it's through to the fence.
00:57:48But Nurse is not to last long and it's another wicket to Benno when he has him caught at slip by Simpson.
00:57:56Nurse out for five in the West Indies, five for 275, bringing wicket keeper Jerry Alexander to the crease to partner his captain.
00:58:07Benno bowls and Alexander's beaten but he hadn't moved his back foot and in the same over from Benno,
00:58:12there's another near miss for Alexander when from a big swing he skies the ball into the covers,
00:58:17not far over O'Neill's head.
00:58:24When drinks are taken, a surprisingly subdued Worrell has scored only two runs in 55 minutes,
00:58:29but when Hoare bowls he begins to show some form at last.
00:58:32As far as Alexander's concerned, it's attack right from the start and when he gets a no ball from Hoare,
00:58:42it's promptly swung through mid wicket for four.
00:58:52Benno now bowls to Worrell and when the West Indies captain pulls a short ball for four,
00:58:56it's quite obvious that Worrell is now going for the runs with the West Indies 300 up and their lead now 329.
00:59:03A flashing cover drive from Worrell confirms his intentions and it's four more onto the West Indies score.
00:59:17Four bowls again and here are some fine forcing shots from both Alexander and Worrell as they take 12 runs from Hoare's over.
00:59:26Four bowls again and here are some fine shots from the West Indies.
00:59:29Four bowls again and here are some good shots.
00:59:37Four bowls again and here are some good shots.
00:59:50Les Favel can't stop the boundary but he's got many young South Australian admirers down on the third man fence.
00:59:56With the partnership mounting, Lindsay Klein is called into the attack, but Jerry Alexander
01:00:02is seeing the ball well, and he nonchalantly hooks the Victorian spinner for four, and
01:00:07follows up with another scoring onside shot.
01:00:20Klein bowls again, and Worrell's powerful square cut goes racing out towards the boundary
01:00:25for two runs, which bring up the 50 partnership between Worrell and Alexander, and giving the
01:00:30West Indies a commanding lead of 353.
01:00:33With good forcing shots, the pair complete their century partnership, and things are looking
01:00:37black for Australia.
01:00:40It's Ken Mackay who eventually breaks the stand after this single from Alexander off an inside
01:00:45edge.
01:00:46Mackay bowls to Worrell, and when he swings hard, Peter Burge takes a good catch at backward
01:00:50square leg to dismiss the West Indies captain.
01:00:55Worrell is out for 53 in the West Indies sixth for 388.
01:00:59Joe Sullivan, the new batsman after the 113 run partnership between Worrell and Alexander,
01:01:05and it's Alexander continuing the attacking policy by lofting Mackay to mid-wicket just
01:01:09in front of Faber.
01:01:11When Mackay bowls again, Alexander attempts to pull him to mid-wicket, and even if his stroke
01:01:16does send the ball straight, it's still four runs as it rolls under the sightboard, and
01:01:20it brings up the 400 in not much over even time.
01:01:34Listen again, and both Solomon and Alexander continue to play forcing strokes on both sides
01:01:38of the wicket.
01:01:43Finally, with three quarters of an hour to stumps, Worrell declares the West Indies innings
01:01:47closed at six for 432, leaving Alexander the Great unconquered at 87, and giving Australia
01:01:53the virtually impossible task of scoring 460 to win in 395 minutes.
01:01:59With a genuine umbrella field behind the wicket, Wesley Hall bowls the opening over in Australia's
01:02:04second innings, and Les Favel is soon on the job with a hook for 4.
01:02:10The ball goes like a bullet to the boundary, sending the seagulls flying from their peaceful
01:02:14haven a deep fine leg, and when Hall bowls again to Favel, the opening batsman has struck
01:02:19a painful blow in the stomach.
01:02:26Frank Worrell is on the scene to make sure that Favel is alright, and when Hall comes
01:02:30in with the next thunderbolt, it's obvious that Favel has recovered, although this time
01:02:34his attempted hook doesn't connect.
01:02:42In Sobers bowls at the other end, comparative peace reigns, although McDonald is badly beaten
01:02:47by this ball outside his off stump.
01:02:49He opens his account with a single off Sobers, and after two overs, the Australian score is
01:02:54no wicket for five.
01:02:55And so far, there hasn't been any indication of the sensation shortly to come.
01:02:59Hall again, and a defensive stroke from McDonald allows the batsman to take a single, bringing
01:03:04fast bowler, and there's Favel again to face Wesley Hall.
01:03:08Favel gets an edge, and Alexander's magnificent diving catch starts the Australian collapse.
01:03:15A vital breakthrough to Wesley Hall, and the Australian score of one for six again makes
01:03:19Norman O'Neill virtually an opening batsman.
01:03:24O'Neill watches carefully, and then gets off the mark from Hall when he pushes the fast bowler
01:03:29straight back for a single.
01:03:37O'Neill retains the strike, and Sobers bowls again in what's to prove a tragic over for
01:03:41Australia.
01:03:42O'Neill and McDonald move off for the single, but Canhye's superb throw runs McDonald out.
01:03:51McDonald is out for two, and Australia two for seven in real trouble, with Bobby Simpson
01:03:56next in to play out the remainder of Sobers over.
01:04:02In spite of the loss of two early wickets, in Hall's next over, O'Neill sets out to take
01:04:07the initiative and take it he does.
01:04:33It's a terrific onslaught by O'Neill against Hall, but when Simpson gets the strike, there's
01:04:37more trouble for Australia.
01:04:39Hall bowls the last ball of the day.
01:04:43Simpson edges, and Alexander takes his second catch.
01:04:46Simpson out for three, and the Australian total three for 31, with O'Neill 21 not out
01:04:51after a sensational last half hour before stumps on the fourth day.
01:04:55It's fine and cool for the fifth and final day, with Australia needing 429 to win in 360 minutes,
01:05:04and Wesley Hall anxious to get on with the job.
01:05:10Queenslander Peter Burge, nearest the camera, is O'Neill's new batting partner, and after
01:05:14Burge's fine effort in the first innings, the Australians are hoping for a continuation
01:05:18of that form, and when Hall bowls, Burge is immediately off the mark with a confident
01:05:22shot to mid-wicket for a single.
01:05:28With Australia in its present position, most critics expect the West Indies to win comfortably,
01:05:33and with Sobers bowling, Burge has other ideas.
01:05:49When Hall bowls again, he's in for a torrid time, particularly from Burge, and the 4 from
01:05:54this powerful square drive is the first of many runs to come from the over.
01:06:06Burge follows his square drive with this beautiful shot off his toes to mid-wicket.
01:06:18He feels and returns to Hall, but when the big fellow bowls again, it's a no ball, and
01:06:22Burge continues his attack.
01:06:42When O'Neill gets the strike, he follows Burge's lead, and this crashing square drive
01:06:46for four, brings up Australia's 50 in 70 minutes, good time considering the shocking start to
01:06:51the innings.
01:06:52In the morning's play so far, Burge has scored 14 to O'Neill's five, and when Sobers bowls,
01:06:58it's Burge again, swinging him deep to fine leg for two more.
01:07:03Burge is playing his natural attacking game with powerful shots all round the wicket, as
01:07:07witnessed this tremendous back foot drive through the covers for four.
01:07:19When off-spinner Gibbs is brought into the attack, O'Neill flicks him away to mid-wicket
01:07:23without scoring, but next ball, O'Neill produces a gem of a cover drive, which is sheer perfection.
01:07:29Burge and O'Neill have added 29 in a little over half an hour, and the Australian inning
01:07:35seems to be on its way to recovery, particularly when Burge plays glorious cover drives off the
01:07:40back foot, like these off-sobers.
01:08:08O'Neill is playing some lovely strokes too, and this on-drive brings up the Australian
01:08:13100 in 120 minutes, the last 50 in even time.
01:08:17When left-arm spinner Valentine comes into the attack, O'Neill reaches his 50 in two hours
01:08:22with this late cut.
01:08:23O'Neill has hit seven fours in his half-century, and as he came in with the score at one for six,
01:08:28he's done a fine job.
01:08:30But soon after, he loses Burge off the bowling of Valentine, when Burge attempts to square cut,
01:08:36and Alexander takes his third catch for the innings.
01:08:39Burge has made 49 in 98 minutes, and with O'Neill has saved Australia from what could
01:08:44have been a total collapse.
01:08:45Benno comes in to face Gibbs, bowling round the wicket, and with his side in a nasty position,
01:08:50the Australian captain is content to play out time until lunch, when the Australian score
01:08:54is four for 116, 340 short of victory.
01:08:58When the Australians resume their second innings after lunch on the final afternoon of the
01:09:02test match, runs are of little consequence.
01:09:05Still 343 behind, the best Australia can hope for is a draw, and even that looks remote
01:09:10at this stage.
01:09:11Norman O'Neill is still batting well, and he's able to score freely and confidently off Alf
01:09:15Valentine.
01:09:16O'Neill came to the crease at the fall of the first wicket, and since then he's seen McDonald,
01:09:20Simpson and Burge fall by the wayside, while he himself has scored 57 runs.
01:09:25It's an all-spin attack with Sobers operating at the other end to Benno, a Benno willing
01:09:37to take no risks, but very nearly getting himself out court behind the wicket.
01:09:48Valentine bowls again, and O'Neill's square cut brings him four more runs, but these are
01:09:52his last runs as he's out in Sobers next over Court and Bowl for 65, made in three hours
01:09:57with eight fours.
01:09:59Australia five for 129, and the doer Mackay, a great man for this situation, is to partner
01:10:04Benno.
01:10:05Mackay's almost out immediately when he edges to leg slip, and Gibbs almost makes a catch.
01:10:10It's to prove a costly let-off as far as the West Indies are concerned, as the imperturbable
01:10:14Mackay's innings is soon underway.
01:10:17Yet more spin with Gibbs, the new bowler, and when Benno cocks the ball up, he's fortunate
01:10:39that there's no fieldsman close enough to make it a chance.
01:10:42But there's nothing chancy about Benno's stroke when he swings Gibbs hard behind square
01:10:46leg for four, and follows up with another scoring stroke off the off-spinner.
01:10:57A mid-pitch conference between Benno and Mackay, and when Sobers bowls, it seems as though
01:11:11Benno's prepared to dig in.
01:11:13But soon after, Sobers tempts him, and a forcing straight drive sees Sobers bringing off his
01:11:17second successive Court and Bowl.
01:11:22The West Indies are right on top, having got rid of Benno for 17, and with Australia
01:11:27still having three and a quarter hours to bat, and only four wickets left, the fate of
01:11:31the country rests temporarily in the hands of Queensland, represented by Ken Mackay, and
01:11:36now Wally Grout.
01:11:39Like vultures, they cluster round Grout's bat when he faces Sobers, and it's almost a catch
01:11:43to the diving hall.
01:11:45There are so many fieldsmen on the onside that umpire Eger is forced to stand at point,
01:11:51and for the time being, Grout's tempted no more, and he gets his first runs off Sobers,
01:11:55when a ball outside the off-stump allows him to cut wide of the gully for two.
01:12:00Even now there's no indication of the drama to come, as Mackay and Grout pick up odd runs
01:12:19the bowling of Gibbs.
01:12:34Mackay is playing a typical innings of dogged defence, but when a ball asks to be hit, he
01:12:39has a go, even if he doesn't always make contact with the ball.
01:12:42In this case, three leg buys go onto the total.
01:12:56The Australian score passes 150, and if Mackay is playing his natural game, so too is Grout,
01:13:01as he bangs Sobers away forward of point for four.
01:13:13Gibbs bowls, and again Mackay fails to make contact, but Alexander's beaten two, and there
01:13:18are two buys.
01:13:19Ken Mackay has the reputation of being the world's best judge of whether a ball is going
01:13:23to pass outside his stumps, and in this innings he gets plenty of opportunities to test his
01:13:27judgment.
01:13:32Grout is playing easily his best innings of the series, and his powerful square cutoff Sobers
01:13:36beats the fast running Solomon to the fence.
01:13:45Grout swings Sobers away to square leg for a single, and when Mackay faces the bowling,
01:13:50although his stroke isn't quite so forcing as Grout's, it brings him four times as many
01:13:54runs.
01:14:02Worrell continues to make quick bowling changes in an effort to break the dangerous looking
01:14:06partnership, but when Hall bowls yet another no ball, Grout turns it behind square leg for
01:14:11two, and follows the shot with a combination of square cut and drive for more runs.
01:14:15In a further effort to break the partnership which has now realised fifty runs, and more
01:14:22important from the Australian viewpoint, has held the West Indies attack out for an hour,
01:14:27Worrell brings Solomon on to bowl his first over in the series.
01:14:32But Solomon's bowling presents no problems to Grout, and he gets through it without any trouble,
01:14:40scoring a single in the process.
01:14:42Still maintaining the policy of getting through as many overs as possible, and making quick
01:14:47changes, Worrell himself comes back into the attack for what's to prove a sensational spell.
01:14:53Grout seems confident for this ball, which he turns forward of square leg for two.
01:15:03Worrell is bowling round the wicket, and when he bowls again, Grout is beaten, and the confident
01:15:08appeal for LBW is upheld.
01:15:10Grout out for a well-made 42 in 76 minutes, and when the players leave the field for tea,
01:15:15the Australian score is seven for 203, still two hours to bat, and only bowlers miss and
01:15:20hoar and climb to come in.
01:15:26After tea, when Sobers bowls, Mackay has a few uncomfortable moments, but nevertheless
01:15:31he's doing a typically sterling job for Australia, and one feels that in view of the strain under
01:15:35which he must be batting, knowing what's expected of him, he's entitled to do his little bit of gardening.
01:15:44With Mackay defending only the way Mackay can defend, there's still some slight hope of
01:15:48Australia forcing a draw, but those hopes grow dimmer when Worrell bowls to Misson.
01:15:58Misson edges to leg slip, and Solomon takes a neat catch.
01:16:09Sent in victory, the West Indies players are justifiably elated at Misson's dismissal,
01:16:13with Australia now eight for 207, and Des Hoare the next batsman.
01:16:17Hoare's innings is a brief affair, and includes a collision between fieldsmen and a bump ball
01:16:22which the crowd thinks is a catch.
01:16:29Hoare's innings comes to a sudden end when he takes a big swing at Sobers, and is clean bowled without scoring.
01:16:47The Australian scoreboard now shows nine for 207, and at a devastating burst, Worrell has taken three for eight.
01:16:59When Victorian spinner Lindsay Klein makes his way to the wicket and smiles ruefully at the West Indies fieldsmen,
01:17:05there are over a hundred minutes scheduled to stumps, and with fieldsmen all round him,
01:17:09Klein sets about a task generally conceded as utterly hopeless.
01:17:13But Victorians will claim that Klein has more ability with the bat than many other tail-enders,
01:17:17and he certainly has the chance of a lifetime to prove it.
01:17:27Klein safely threw his first over, and with Sobers at the other end, Mackay defends to perfection.
01:17:45Gaining confidence with each ball he faces, Worrell's next over sees Klein open his account with a single to mid-on,
01:17:51and in the same over we see the disputed catch with Worrell bowling to Mackay.
01:17:56Mackay forwards, Sobers takes the ball, and the West Indies players start to leave the field.
01:18:00But umpire Eager remains unmoved, and Sobers is bitterly disappointed at his decision that it was a bump ball.
01:18:08The incident fails to disturb Mackay's rigidly disciplined defence,
01:18:12and in fact, in open defiance of the net around him, he swings Worrell through the close onside field for two.
01:18:21For a period, Klein has a good deal of the strike against both Sobers and Worrell,
01:18:25but with the minutes ticking away, the attack is repulsed.
01:18:28Gibbs is the next bowler tried, and Mackay has mixed fortunes, but when he turns the offspinner to mid-wicket for a single,
01:18:42he shows he has increasing faith in his partner's ability to keep the attack at bay.
01:18:46Klein doesn't middle every ball, but who'd expect him to in this electric atmosphere, with 13,000 spectators,
01:18:58and a million more listening and watching, wondering which ball will end the test match.
01:19:02Gibbs again, and when Klein cuts him past point for four, surely no century was ever greeted with more heartfelt applause.
01:19:13Although in this partnership, Klein is very much the underdog, Mackay is putting up a superlative performance,
01:19:24and when he sweeps Valentine to the mid-wicket boundary, he reaches his 50,
01:19:28a plucky effort even for a player of Mackay's temperament.
01:19:31With just over an hour to go to stumps, Worrell gives Hall the new ball,
01:19:36and with Lindsey Klein to face the giant speedster, every cricket heart, including the West Indies players, is in its owner's mouth.
01:19:45Let's watch and see how Klein fares. First, a no ball from Hall.
01:19:51The match almost ends with a run-out when Klein thinks about a single and has to scurry back.
01:20:04But it's Klein's day, and he plays Hall with greater aplomb than some of his more illustrious teammates,
01:20:19richly earning the drink that follows Hall's over.
01:20:22So the battle continues with Mackay and Klein, master of every situation,
01:20:26and now Worrell bowls the second-last over of the match to Klein,
01:20:29with every fieldsman except the bowler clustered round Klein's bat.
01:20:34It's the end of Worrell's over, and Klein's made it, but there's still Hall to follow, bowling to Mackay.
01:20:39In for what should be the last ball of the test match.
01:20:42He balks and flings down the ball in disgust.
01:20:45Hall again to Mackay.
01:20:47It's a no ball, but as far as the crowd is concerned, the match is over.
01:20:51Onto the field they stream, despite umpire Hoy's frantic signal,
01:20:55and when order is finally restored, Hall bowls again.
01:20:58Mackay, in stoic fashion, takes the ball on his body,
01:21:01and the fourth test match in Adelaide is a draw, with the fifth in Melbourne to decide the issue.
01:21:17What's the
