00:00For Viv Richards, it could hardly have been a better 34th birthday.
00:04He won the toss, sent England into bat,
00:07and his bowlers proceeded to make it a day of massive West Indian superiority.
00:12In the very first over, a delivery from Malcolm Marshall hit Graham Gooch on the shoulder.
00:17Gooch, after that blow, never settled.
00:19And some two balls later, he played straight into the hands of Carlisle Best,
00:23fielding in the slips.
00:24And England at that stage, two for the loss of one wicket.
00:30It was a very short debut for Will Slack.
00:32With England on 11 and he on 2, he gave Thelston Payne his first test catch.
00:38Peter Willey, brave as he is, could not cope with a real brute from Patrick Patterson,
00:42and England were dishearteningly placed at 31 for the loss of three wickets.
00:47That brought together the pair of David Gower and Alan Lamb.
00:51They proceeded to provide the some 8,000 spectators on hand on this the first day of the second test
00:55match
00:56with some superb stroke play.
00:58For David Gower, it was a welcome return to form,
01:01and it seemed during that partnership that England could at last get a respectable score.
01:10David Gower was the first of the two batsmen to get to his 50.
01:14And it came just after the luncheon interval.
01:18Gower's 50 included 10 beautiful 4s.
01:24Shortly afterwards, Alan Lamb reached the very same landmark,
01:28and in similar fashion to David Gower as well, a 4.
01:33Lamb's 50 included 9 4s.
01:37After the pair had added 106 valuable runs for England,
01:41David Gower on 66 went LBW to Joel Garner.
01:44And thereafter, a procession started.
01:46Ian Botham, continuing to do anything but impress Caribbean fans,
01:50could not manage one from Malcolm Marshall,
01:52and Richie Richardson took a fine catch, now 147 for 5.
01:55One run later, John Embury gave Garner his second wicket,
01:59and Payne his third catch.
02:01At 153, Alan Lamb gave the Giant Garner another wicket,
02:06magnificently picked up at slip by Malcolm Marshall.
02:09On the stroke of tea, Ellison, who always found Malcolm Marshall too much,
02:14perished by the LBW route, and England went in at 163 for 8.
02:18Shortly after the interval, it was all over.
02:20Downton giving Courtney Walsh his first wicket of the innings,
02:23and the explosive Patrick Patterson later bowling Greg Thomas.
02:27For England, an unconvincing performance, 176 all out,
02:31Marshall taking 4 and Garner 3 wickets.
02:34When the West Indian innings started, it was in fine style.
02:38Ian Botham came in for some severe punishment,
02:41from Desmond Haynes and Gordon Greenidge.
02:44A couple of half-volleys outside the Ostom
02:46always seemed to find their target, the middle of the bat,
02:49and subsequently, the advertising boards around the Queen's Park Oval boundaries.
02:54Much stood the delight of the crowd on hand.
02:57The pair, in quick time, brought up the 50 for the West Indies,
03:01while at the same time doing little to enhance the reputation of Ian Botham
03:04as one of Test cricket's finest all-rounders.
03:08Richard Ellison, England's bowling hero of the first Test at Sabina Park,
03:12was also treated with scant respect.
03:14And only Greg Thomas, who had the only England success of the first day,
03:18the wicket of Greenwich, bowled well.
03:20The West Indians closed the first day at 67 for 1.
03:23This is Tony Harford from the Queen's Park Oval.
03:31Desmond Haynes managed a long stay, but not a comfortable one.
03:35On the other hand, Richie Richardson will long remember
03:37the second day of the second Test against England.
03:39It was a day on which he endeared himself to a hard-to-please Trinidad crowd,
03:43with some hitting that we have come to associate with genius.
03:47Richardson and Haynes added 150 for the second wicket,
03:50as England seemed unpenetrative in the boiling Queen's Park Oval arena.
03:55Richardson's fifth Test sentry came just after lunch
03:58and included 19 fours on a six
03:59and certainly merited a warm hug from his partner Haynes.
04:03At 209, and with Richardson on 102,
04:07he attempted to sweep Embury and was caught behind.
04:10It was cause for celebration,
04:12and Edmunds did just that thanks to a generous spectator.
04:16Larry Combs was his usual unhurried self.
04:20He made 30, including four fours.
04:24Haynes made 67,
04:26but in trying to get to the pitch of one,
04:28he left his ground,
04:29and Downton did a smart bit of stumping,
04:31the bowler, John Embury.
04:33Carlisle Best started confidently,
04:35a four through the offside,
04:37but he soon lost a partner in Larry Combs,
04:41stumped by Paul Downton.
04:44The departure of Combs saw the arrival
04:46of cricket's reigning monarch, Viv Richards.
04:49Richards, like his performance in the One Day International
04:52played earlier in the week,
04:53was off to a flying start.
04:54He hit several fours and sixes
04:56and scoring 34 lightning-fast runs.
05:00At 298, however,
05:02he was caught by Ian Botham,
05:04his buddy.
05:07Thurston Payne,
05:08who had come into the Test team
05:09because of his ability to bat,
05:11did not show evidence of this.
05:12He made five,
05:13and a 303 was caught by Gower.
05:17Carlisle Best and Malcolm Marshall
05:18advanced to score to 327,
05:21with Best going to 22
05:22before he was bowled by a ball from Phil Edmonds,
05:25trying to play back.
05:29Joel Garner was the next man out.
05:31He scored four runs,
05:32and that was when the score was 342.
05:35The West End is close today at 347 for eight,
05:37a lead of 171 over England.
05:39This is Tony Harford from the Queen's Park Oval.
05:45Resuming at the overnight 347 for eight,
05:47the West Indian batsmen continued on the rampage today,
05:50much to England's dismay.
05:52Alan Lamb tried to stop one,
05:53but injured his finger.
05:55Malcolm Marshall was as lethal today with the bat,
05:57as he usually is with the ball.
05:59He and Courtney Walsh, his overnight partner,
06:02took the West Indian score past the 350 mark,
06:04to 364 in fact,
06:06before Walsh was picked up at Backwood Shortleg,
06:09caught by Phil Edmonds,
06:10off the bowling of the impressive young fast bowler,
06:12Greg Thomas.
06:15Any England thoughts of soon finishing the West Indian batting
06:17vanished soon,
06:18as Malcolm Marshall found a fair friend
06:20in young Patrick Patterson,
06:22who scored nine.
06:23These two added in fact another 35 to the West Indian total,
06:27Marshall certainly confirming to all
06:29that he is the genuine all-rounder.
06:31When Patterson was finally out,
06:33Marshall was left on 67 not out,
06:35and the West Indian innings ended at 399,
06:38a commanding lead of 223.
06:41England at that time,
06:42must certainly have been reliving
06:44the nightmares of Sabina Park.
06:46It was Ian Botham who was finally rewarded
06:47with Patterson's wicket,
06:49his only success of the innings.
06:51John Embry finished with figures of five for 78.
06:54England's innings started in disaster.
06:57Wilf Slack, badly wanting to get off the mark,
06:59attempted a run that was never on.
07:01He slipped and was run out,
07:02Desmond Haynes finishing the job.
07:04England at two now for one.
07:07Slack's departure made way for David Gower,
07:09the England captain,
07:10whose return to form in the first innings
07:12must have been a relief both to Gower himself
07:14and to the team.
07:16He and Kooch played some scintillating shots
07:18on both sides of the wicket.
07:20Gower following his first inning 66
07:21with another splendid innings of 47,
07:24including eight magnificent fours.
07:27He proved beyond all doubt
07:28that he's very strong on the offside,
07:30though sometimes he escaped fairly narrowly.
07:33Graham Gooch too had his moments of luck.
07:35This time, he was not picked up by Joel Garner in the gully,
07:38though Garner should have taken the catch.
07:40Courtney Walsh bowled very well.
07:42In fact, he was unlucky not to pick up Gooch's wicket
07:45for a second time
07:46when a confident LBW appeal
07:48against the opening batsman was turned down.
07:56Patrick Patterson's success at Sabina Park
07:59have certainly not followed him to the Queen's Park Oval.
08:01Again today, he bowled many no-balls.
08:04Courtney Walsh, who gave a lackluster bowling performance
08:06in the England first innings,
08:07was much more on target today
08:09and perhaps was unfortunate
08:10not to have had more success.
08:14Although Patterson bowled without success,
08:16he certainly proved to the England batsman
08:18that he can be lethal.
08:20Courtney Walsh, bowling from the Pavilion M,
08:22was the man who achieved a breakthrough for the West Indies.
08:25After Gooch and Gower had added 80 valuable runs
08:27and Gower's personal score on 47,
08:29Walsh got one to slip between bat and pad,
08:31and the England captain was bowled.
08:33But it was another good batting performance by him,
08:36eight fours in his 47.
08:39Peter Willey, with the awkward stance,
08:41then joined Graham Gooch,
08:42and these two saw the England total pass to 100 mark,
08:45the 100 coming in 154 minutes.
08:49With the score at 109,
08:51Graham Gooch got a brute of a delivery from Courtney Walsh,
08:54did not play a shot, and was out LBW.
08:57England had lost their third wicket.
09:00Willey and Alan Lamb continued to the end of the day's play.
09:02They had seen the England total to 168
09:05for the loss of three wickets,
09:06play ending some 20 minutes early because of bad light.
09:10Their partnership was not without great difficulty.
09:13Peter Willey surviving a confident LBW appeal,
09:16and Alan Lamb on the other end being narrowly missed.
09:19The catch put down off the bowling of Joel Garner
09:20by Malcolm Marshall,
09:21after Richie Richardson picked it up off the ground.
09:25So, it should be a very interesting fourth day.
09:28England, seven wickets intact,
09:30are still to score 55
09:31before the West Indies are asked to bat again.
09:34Tomorrow is a rest day in the match.
09:42The fourth day started with England at 168 for three,
09:45Willey and Lamb advancing to 190,
09:48a partnership of 81.
09:50Good, but not enough.
09:51Lamb was the first to go,
09:53getting a ball from Courtney Walsh cutting back.
09:55He had made 40.
09:56It was the start of a slide.
09:58If ever England needed heroics from Ian Botham,
10:01it was now.
10:02But yet again, he failed,
10:04leaving West Indians a little suspicious of his ability.
10:07His failure was before a British press corps
10:10that has been anything but kind to this superstar.
10:12He let them know he was aware
10:14that he was getting the flush for yet another time.
10:17A gritty 26 scored in 198 minutes by Peter Willey
10:21ended soon afterwards,
10:23thanks to a delivery from Malcolm Marshall.
10:26After one more four by John Embry,
10:28Marshall had every reason to celebrate.
10:31Paul Downton provided the West Indian quick bowler
10:33with his 200th test wicket.
10:36Marshall becoming the sixth West Indian
10:38to reach that landmark.
10:43And, while it is a test match Marshall will long remember,
10:46it is one Thelston Payne will want to forget.
10:49Keeping wicket for the world's best team,
10:52Thelston Payne looked very second class,
10:54although he managed to hold on to a few catches.
10:57In a crucial moment, he dropped one
11:00and let by some 20 buys in the England second innings,
11:04very definitely assisting the British cause.
11:09One he did take was of Joel Garner
11:11to dismiss Phil Edmonds.
11:13England at that time, 243 for nine.
11:16Any thoughts of quickly finishing the second test
11:19soon vanished,
11:20as Greg Thomas and Richard Ellison
11:22displayed all the application missing
11:23from the top of the England batting.
11:26These two played every ball on merit,
11:28and their partnership of 72
11:30is a new England 10th wicket record in the Caribbean.
11:33Thomas made 31,
11:35and Richard Ellison made 36.
11:37Ellison was last out,
11:39a victim of one of the most dubious decisions
11:41given at the Queen's Park Oval.
11:43Umpire David Archer gave him LBW
11:45with the England total at 315.
11:49He was clearly not pleased.
11:52Malcolm Marshall and Courtney Walsh
11:54ended the innings with four wickets each.
11:58The West Indian openers, Haynes and Greenwich,
12:01started a quick chase for the 93 runs
12:02needed for a West Indian victory.
12:05They played an assortment of strokes
12:07only the best of batsmen can make.
12:12Gordon Greenwich was severe on all bowlers.
12:17the quick ones
12:18and the not-so-quick ones.
12:23And when it came to spin bowling,
12:25it would seem Greenwich relished that too.
12:27He hit John Embry for two sixes overhead.
12:33Greenwich was out with a West Indian total at 72.
12:36He had made 45.
12:39And the fourth day ended
12:40where the West Indies at 76 for one,
12:4317 runs away from victory.
12:49And that's in Gomes on sixth.
12:52Richardson for that beautiful 150.
12:55Not out.
12:58They got things going very soon.
13:00Both Gomes and Richardson
13:01trying to get back in stride once again.
13:05Looking for a huge target.
13:08Early in the day,
13:10Edmunds was hit for four
13:12packed field cover by Richardson.
13:14He really seemed to have taken a long left
13:17yesterday afternoon.
13:19But it wasn't to last too long
13:21because he was playing badly across the line,
13:23sleeping,
13:24was hit,
13:24he burnt,
13:25and his leg before the kick.
13:27Scored was then 286.
13:30Richardson's 116 scored,
13:32and 236 minutes,
13:34277 balls,
13:3677 scored,
13:37and 80 scoreless scores.
13:43After he went,
13:46Richards came,
13:48and he quickly got his stride,
13:49he's off the mark in a hurry,
13:50then swept Edmunds for this four fast.
13:54Gooch,
13:55that was square after Gooch
13:56managed to get Gooch to hang on to it.
14:00Richards was in fine stride from earlier.
14:04Embry came and was hit hard back past him,
14:09and it was evident that Richards was in a mood not to be contained.
14:13Embry was then lofted for a six.
14:22Gooch really started to get into the act.
14:26Richards going great guns,
14:31and then he swept him beautifully.
14:33That's the way the sweep shots should be played,
14:35without giving a chance to the baller or a few points.
14:39No more runs for Richards.
14:41Then Gomes got into the action.
14:44He had been batting patiently,
14:45getting his fours from placements and singles and twos,
14:47but then he played
14:49a beautiful mid-on drive,
14:51and Ed Luiz had to be the chance.
14:53That one went away with the four.
14:58Gomes and Richards were seeing this score through until lunch,
15:03as Westonese had hoped.
15:05Embry was then hit flat,
15:08with a hard,
15:09over-middle kick for four by Richards.
15:12But he wasn't satisfied,
15:14which has then got under the ball,
15:16made it into a half-hole,
15:17and hit it beautifully over-middle kick,
15:20to another six.
15:21It went out of the ground,
15:22over the cage into the stands.
15:26Then, to post the 350,
15:28Gomes played a cut shot of Edmunds' fast point.
15:34That was another beauty for Gomes.
15:36We have him 50 on the board,
15:38after this new ball was taken.
15:41And what was that?
15:42Richards would get his 50,
15:45and post a six-council,
15:48just before that time.
15:49It was around seven, eight minutes,
15:52when the balls were changed.
15:55But Richards did get that 50,
15:57before the lunch in the field.
16:00It took him 19 minutes,
16:0269 balls,
16:03four-four to two more.
16:05And it's success.
16:07Then, just before the interval,
16:10Gomes almost had noticed,
16:12how the lunch in the world playing,
16:14remember that it was to put up a square leg.
16:16For 33,
16:18and the water is coming at 361.
16:22That was the interval at lunch.
16:25Richards leading just three more runs,
16:28for 6,000.
16:30That's where the lunch time,
16:31is the 244,
16:33with best relaxable level.
16:36They needed to get into this series,
16:40attack after the interval,
16:41and they did so very quickly.
16:43In fact,
16:43first ball after,
16:44Richards etched towards first,
16:46with Dalton with a cross,
16:48and the taps have grabbed the ball,
16:50and Richards had gone for 51 runs,
16:53had its score,
16:54in fact,
16:54first ball after the plate,
16:56and they're used to see it,
16:57back in this field.
17:01And Dijon,
17:02who plays him,
17:03these two look good,
17:05and Dijon playing Thomas,
17:07beautifully,
17:08and we are proud,
17:09to get off the mark.
17:13Dijon when he's going,
17:14looks good.
17:15Today he looks flowing.
17:17Botham came,
17:18and he was put away by Dijon as well,
17:21a delivery which was tucked,
17:22back with his spirit,
17:24and he's got his spirit.
17:26Dijon playing through the line,
17:28just a bit,
17:28but looking magnificent.
17:31But he wasn't to last too long,
17:32when his score worked to five,
17:33he got a short run from Botham,
17:35got out of line,
17:37and up to,
17:38forward,
17:39down with the snap,
17:40to the magnanimous catch,
17:42at Batwood's field,
17:43underbundies.
17:45And Dijon had gone,
17:46five of us to knees,
17:47with them,
17:49267 for six.
17:51Botham,
17:52got the four,
17:54off the edge of best,
17:56down through the slip,
17:58then he was pulled,
18:00by the same batsman,
18:01for another four,
18:02with a good shot,
18:04from the Batwood's field.
18:05and Dijon.
18:06Here we are.
18:08Dijon,
18:09when it comes,
18:10early in the order,
18:13he's got Wutton's last,
18:14as much,
18:15in Bagulis.
18:16He got among the runners,
18:18when he's looking to the wicket,
18:19for a good looking score,
18:22he was finished with Wutton,
18:23just after that,
18:25got back in his wicket,
18:26pulled him,
18:27for a massive six,
18:29over the square leg,
18:30boundary,
18:30the ball that went out of the ground.
18:34And that had put this score into double figures
18:37and posted a 400 in quite nearly 51 minutes.
18:42He will continue to unite this.
18:44A big crowd of about 14,000 now
18:47with a full off-promise cut pass point.
18:52But after giving the 23, he was a little impatient,
18:56got a low foot toss from the same bowler,
18:59missed it, trained for the shots,
19:01and his bold center and leg starts.
19:03Folding for 23 is pulled in at 406 for seven.
19:09Marshall replaced him, promptly showed his class
19:12with this beauty of a shot through the covers of Thomas.
19:18Marshall was not to be outdone,
19:20but soon after that, he got into an awful tangle
19:23with Caroleil Best, off for a second run
19:26for a ball that was hit down to the long leg area.
19:29The second run seemed to be on,
19:31then Best turned back in mid-pitch.
19:33Both of them were at the same end,
19:35and both of them had no trouble at all,
19:37picking the bales off,
19:39with Marshall out for a full run out.
19:43Best was then playing back and across
19:45and was leg before wickets to foster for 21,
19:47and the big league which the West Indies were looking for
19:50had suddenly vanished,
19:51and with Gerrima going cut by Gooch,
19:54Thomas, to give him his fourth wicket,
19:56the West Indies have lost eight wickets today
19:59for 149 runs in 202 minutes,
20:02and were all up for 418 runs in 562 minutes.
20:07But, Robinson was an early victim
20:11in England's Thurstoning's top-edging,
20:14an indecisive shot to Marshall's bouncer,
20:16and he skied it off the glove for Dujan
20:18to take a simple catch,
20:19and England were in awful trouble.
20:21But then, Gooch and Dower played beautifully,
20:25both getting some good shots.
20:27After tea, Gooch had pulled Marshall for 4,
20:30then straight draw,
20:32with a sweetly tiny shot of Garner,
20:35precisely into the English cheering section.
20:38Then the untappable David Dower got into the axe
20:41and played this shot,
20:43down towards fine leg for a 4,
20:48and then hit Garner for another shot.
20:52Dower was playing with all the time in the world,
20:55but for the first time in the field,
20:57as England were on even turns with a left lead
21:00on the pitch that gave no bother.
21:03Patterson had some new balls,
21:04no ball problems.
21:06Dower slapped him past points,
21:08and the city was being toasted.
21:11Another 60-wens game in the final hour,
21:15during which time,
21:16Dower had a very close call against Patterson
21:18for leg before shelf.
21:20And that was turned down by the empire.
21:25Then Gooch got a 4,
21:27through best,
21:28who was the cover fielder.
21:32That's it,
21:33through his legs.
21:35Then a few lucky strikes,
21:36including one from Dower.
21:42Outfielder,
21:43which went through the slips.
21:46Very close to a catch.
21:48These two saw the score from 110-1,
21:51when played in light,
21:53stopped play,
21:54five minutes early.
21:55Dower was on 51,
21:57Gooch on 46,
21:58308 runs behind,
22:00and England had their best moments.
22:02West Indies 418 in all out,
22:04England 110-1.
22:07Resuming on 110-1,
22:09and looking good,
22:11Dower on 50,
22:12and Gooch in the white hat on 46.
22:14England were anticipating perhaps their best day of the series,
22:18in front, once again,
22:19of a good Sunday crowd.
22:21Dower's fine touch
22:22was evident early in the piece,
22:24as he pushed Marshall,
22:26first of all,
22:26past Gooch for four.
22:28Elegant shot.
22:31Soon after that,
22:32he was back to pull him
22:34over backwards,
22:35square leg,
22:36for another four.
22:37And the runs seemed to be
22:39coming from where they left off,
22:41the evening before.
22:43But that wasn't to last too long,
22:45for just a 66-1,
22:47by a little bit of a zero for
22:49Michael Dujan,
22:50equaling his best score for the series,
22:53and England were 2-126.
22:56A strangely subdued,
22:58Gooch got the involuntary four
23:00of a slip-off Marshall
23:01to post his own 50,
23:03in fact he went to 53,
23:04but that was all.
23:06He edged to Dujan,
23:08off Garner,
23:09and Gooch had gone,
23:11England once again,
23:12looking as though
23:13the breakthrough was now in it.
23:16In fact it was,
23:17because Willy came,
23:19and went,
23:19cropped by Dujan,
23:21off Marshall,
23:22the race, you know,
23:23beautifully consoled
23:24swing bowling
23:25from both Marshall and Garner.
23:27And then,
23:28Lamb got a four,
23:29off Marshall,
23:31to cover,
23:32and got a tacking shot,
23:34but it didn't last too long,
23:35for him either,
23:37because just after that,
23:38he edged
23:39the Richardson off Marshall,
23:42and the breakthrough
23:43was now complete.
23:45Michael Holden,
23:47hit Botham,
23:48the most fearful of uppercuts,
23:50and he was done,
23:51like a heavyweight,
23:52on the ground,
23:53for the full count.
23:57When he got back up,
23:58he decided he would have to retaliate.
24:00It was Patterson's turn,
24:02to get the treatment.
24:02He was slapped,
24:03short ball,
24:04fast ball,
24:05sore,
24:06but that again,
24:07didn't last too long.
24:09Just before the luncheon intervals,
24:11a huge crowd,
24:12looking on once again.
24:14Botham got another short ball,
24:16went for mid-wicket,
24:17got it off the cup edge,
24:19Dijon waited simply,
24:20until it came down out of the skies.
24:21And England,
24:24at lunch,
24:25it was 168-6,
24:28and they couldn't believe it,
24:30after the start they had,
24:32in the morning session.
24:35After lunch,
24:36the procession continued,
24:38but not before downtown had placed,
24:40the first he'd received,
24:43down to third man for four.
24:45But then it was Embry's turn,
24:48Patterson getting into the act,
24:49with a good catch,
24:51straight to Best however,
24:52at third slip,
24:53and that made it seven for 172.
24:55Then Downton,
24:56padded out,
24:57didn't offer a shot.
24:59Holden claimed his wicket leg before,
25:01and after that,
25:02Edmonds gets a four,
25:04off Patterson,
25:05Gomes chasing futilely,
25:07down to the Kensington stand.
25:10And then Foster went,
25:11once again,
25:12by the LBW route,
25:13to Holden,
25:13nine for 185.
25:16Thomas came in,
25:17lasted long enough,
25:19to get a four,
25:20and then voluntarily shot off the inside edge,
25:23after all the celebration.
25:24But,
25:25that went to his scorebook,
25:27and it was the last thing that happened for England.
25:30Just after that,
25:32Edmonds,
25:34facing up to Patterson,
25:36back away from the body,
25:38and,
25:39and,
25:40Richardson once again,
25:40takes the catch,
25:41from England,
25:42all out for 189,
25:44in 59 overs.
25:47And,
25:47the,
25:48demise had been swift,
25:50and sharp.
25:52second inning started,
25:54which is properly enforcing the follow on.
25:57Four to Robinson,
25:59off Patterson,
26:00second four to him,
26:03off Ghana,
26:03with Patterson chasing.
26:06Robinson kept things going.
26:09Another four.
26:11Fast point.
26:12left.
26:13Let's go.
26:14He would have his,
26:15best afternoon.
26:17In fact,
26:17that wasn't at all,
26:18because he played massive.
26:20Again,
26:20for Spina,
26:21to the X,
26:22because of that,
26:22was a good shot.
26:24Robinson,
26:25correctly decided,
26:26to hit anything that he could,
26:28so that he would get as many runs as possible.
26:30This thing is,
26:31outside the obstacle.
26:32Again,
26:33playing,
26:33this time,
26:34over the snakes.
26:35And,
26:35a tee.
26:37England banning the second time,
26:3844 without loss.
26:40Robinson was then on 30.
26:42And,
26:42Gooch,
26:43once again playing the second fiddle,
26:44on 10.
26:46Immediately after the interval,
26:48Gooch went,
26:49playing on,
26:50to his off stump,
26:50to Patterson,
26:51and the second innings,
26:53comings and goings had started.
26:55Gooch for 11.
26:59Strangely subdued Gooch in this match.
27:01But,
27:02Gower came once again,
27:03and decided,
27:04the policy would be to,
27:05attack,
27:05to attack,
27:06in fact.
27:07Four off,
27:08holding no ball.
27:10And,
27:10the elegant,
27:12Gower had posted the 50.
27:14Then,
27:15got another four,
27:16for a short ball off Patterson.
27:18And,
27:18Patterson,
27:19at that stage,
27:20once again,
27:21had reverted,
27:21to bowling short.
27:23And,
27:23Robinson got into the act,
27:25with a four off,
27:26slightly shorter delivery from holding.
27:30Down to third man.
27:33And,
27:34the new boy,
27:34Patrick Patterson,
27:35continuing,
27:37to bowl just a little bit too short.
27:40Give Robinson just enough room,
27:42to get him,
27:42over a little bit,
27:43for another four.
27:46Patterson,
27:46I think,
27:47is going very quickly.
27:48And,
27:48he decided then,
27:49to pitch it up.
27:51And,
27:52that was perfect in,
27:54After Boots,
27:55Robinson going,
27:56with his core on 43.
27:59And,
27:59once again,
28:00England,
28:01looking straight down the barrel.
28:07Willi's,
28:08new batsman,
28:08playing from,
28:10square leg,
28:11getting four off Patterson,
28:13slightly over pitched.
28:15And,
28:16then,
28:16Vivi Richards,
28:16introduced himself,
28:18to spare the,
28:18fast bowlers,
28:19just a little bit.
28:21Elegantly played by Willi.
28:24And,
28:25Gower,
28:26the man of class.
28:28Just back with his count.
28:33The bowler was holding.
28:36The bowler now,
28:37is Garner,
28:38the result is a save.
28:40Again,
28:40a classy shot.
28:42It didn't last long,
28:44however,
28:44on 23,
28:46he plays,
28:47the batter slightly away from the body,
28:48not quite getting behind it.
28:50Garner takes his wicket,
28:51caught by Marshall,
28:5294 for three.
28:57The West Indies,
28:58now know,
28:59that the end,
29:00isn't too far away,
29:02as long as they can keep this up.
29:05Willi,
29:05continued to carry the fight,
29:07whenever he could,
29:08posting the hundred,
29:09with a four off holding,
29:11through the covers.
29:15But then,
29:17Lamb,
29:18pushed back,
29:19almost like a school boy.
29:20Michael Holden said,
29:21thank you very much.
29:23Lamb had gone,
29:24caught and bowled,
29:24by holding for six,
29:25108 for four.
29:30Then Garner,
29:31trapped,
29:32with a leg before,
29:34come in front,
29:35and the same score,
29:37the umpire having no hesitation,
29:38and really almost knowing,
29:40that that was it.
29:42that was it.
29:43Then the beleaguered,
29:44but bold,
29:44both of them,
29:45decided to fight,
29:45fire with fire,
29:47and he hit,
29:48four fours,
29:49in his short stay.
29:50The first one off Garner,
29:51down to mid wicket.
29:56Then Holden,
29:57two got the treatment,
29:59two made on this time,
30:00for another four.
30:03These tactics paid off,
30:04because they brought,
30:05the bold,
30:06both of them,
30:0721,
30:07in just 18 minutes.
30:10And just when it looked,
30:11as though he was the man,
30:12to offer the challenge,
30:13to West Indies,
30:14got the outside edge,
30:16to Garner's away swinger,
30:17and at close of play,
30:19England were 132 for six.
30:22That's from the end,
30:23of the third day,
30:24and they're still 97 runs behind,
30:26with an eternity to go.
30:28The scores again,
30:29West Indies 418,
30:32England 189,
30:33and when they resume,
30:34tomorrow morning,
30:34at 10.30,
30:36132 for six.
30:38More highlights tomorrow,
30:39compliments our camera crew,
30:41led by Frank Grimes.
30:45With Botham losing his wicket,
30:47on the last ball,
30:48of the previous day's play,
30:51Edmonds was on three,
30:52and Duncan joined him,
30:54with England,
30:54on 132 for six.
30:58Early in the piece,
30:59Duncan showed some class,
31:00and resolved,
31:01with a three through covers,
31:03off Garner.
31:05But,
31:06that was early days.
31:08Just after that,
31:09Garner trapped Edmonds,
31:10leg before wicket,
31:11trying to turn him to leg,
31:13and the score had gone to 138,
31:15for the loss of seven wickets.
31:18At that point,
31:19we had the first of two stoppages,
31:21for rain,
31:22which came at 10.48,
31:23at 138,
31:24and later in the day,
31:26at 173,
31:28for seven.
31:30The covers were quickly on and off,
31:32and the small crowd remained,
31:34of course,
31:35bolstered,
31:35by the crowd from England.
31:37After the reception,
31:38Embry came out,
31:39and he played rather well.
31:41In fact,
31:41he played Garner,
31:42threw the coverage for four,
31:44then he top-edged,
31:45to slip,
31:47off a no-ball.
31:52And then he got a four,
31:54through point.
31:58In fact,
31:59he eventually was the second highest scorer,
32:01behind Timmy Robertson's 43.
32:05Downton got a four to point off Garner.
32:10And then,
32:11just after that,
32:12he edged very low,
32:14through the slips,
32:14and was not caught,
32:16by Bess,
32:16diving to his left.
32:17Perhaps Richardson,
32:19with the right hand,
32:20might have been able to grab it.
32:23Bess was a little bit chagrin,
32:25but not to bother,
32:26because soon after that,
32:27the end was in sight,
32:29but before that,
32:30Dalton hit Garner through mid-off,
32:32through a four.
32:35Then Embry,
32:36showing a little bit of class,
32:38with this shot,
32:39driving through the covers.
32:41Larry Gorm giving up the chase.
32:44Downton then got a four off Marshall,
32:47played in the space between the slip and gully,
32:49for four to third man.
32:52Then Embry,
32:53was playing over the slips,
32:56high over the slips,
32:58again off Marshall,
32:59for another four.
33:03Writing on the wall,
33:04as Downton was edging,
33:06and beautifully cut,
33:07by Dijon,
33:09off holding,
33:10and Dijon had,
33:12taken his seventh victim,
33:14for the match.
33:16Downton going for 26,
33:18with a score at 188,
33:20for eight.
33:21Holding was to have,
33:22a maiden double wicket,
33:23because after two balls,
33:27there was Foster,
33:29edging high to slip,
33:30Richardson leaping like a ballerina,
33:32and pulling it down.
33:34188 for nine,
33:36and it was all over now,
33:38barring the shouting,
33:39and there was little of that,
33:40precious little,
33:41as well.
33:43Embry continued,
33:44having a top edge four,
33:46over the slips of Patterson.
33:50And then,
33:51just as you remembered,
33:53both of them getting a knock,
33:54in the first innings,
33:55it was Thomas' time,
33:58hit,
33:58on the inside of the leg,
34:01by holding.
34:02He was in an awful,
34:04amount of pain,
34:06but soon,
34:07revived.
34:07To resume the innings,
34:09which didn't last long,
34:11Embry got a four,
34:12through the slips,
34:13again.
34:16The end was in sight,
34:19but,
34:19as Thomas,
34:20not quite recovered,
34:21from that painful blow,
34:23was spectacularly bowled,
34:24by Patterson,
34:25middle stump.
34:26Restonese were home,
34:27by innings,
34:28and 30 runs.
34:29The first time,
34:30we've won the first three home tests,
34:32in the series,
34:32in the Caribbean,
34:34and also makes it,
34:35eight in a row,
34:36against England.
34:38Robinson 43,
34:39Gower 23,
34:40Rilly 17,
34:41Botham 21,
34:43Downton 26,
34:44and Embry 35,
34:45not out,
34:45were the best scorers,
34:46for England.
34:47Marshall,
34:48none for 47,
34:50Garner 4,
34:50for 69,
34:51Patterson 3,
34:52for 28,
34:53and Holding 3,
34:54for 47,
34:54were the West Indies,
34:55best bowlers.
34:58West Indies winning,
34:59by innings,
35:01and 30 runs,
35:02in 279 minutes,
35:0452 overs,
35:05and four balls.
35:07The English run rate,
35:08was 3.7 runs,
35:09and over,
35:1042.7 runs,
35:11an hour.
35:12Adjudicator,
35:12Tony Kozier,
35:13announced,
35:14Richie Richardson,
35:15as man of the match,
35:16we had a majestic 160.
35:19And after that,
35:20Mr. Tom Chilu,
35:21of Cable & Wireless,
35:22presented Vivi Richards,
35:22with the team prize.
35:25And as soon as,
35:26the presentations were over,
35:27the skipper came up,
35:28to the CBC television studios,
35:30and gave us his thoughts,
35:31on the match.
35:31Beginning, of course,
35:33with having been sent in,
35:34by David Dower,
35:35on Friday morning.
35:36Well, most certainly,
35:37you know,
35:37we found ourselves,
35:38in a different position.
35:40Obviously,
35:40when we come here,
35:40to Barberos,
35:41we always look forward,
35:42to putting our position in,
35:44but, for some reason,
35:45you know,
35:45we are back,
35:46so against the wall,
35:47as such,
35:47when it comes to the toss,
35:48by losing the toss.
35:49And, but, you know,
35:50we've got to remember,
35:51that, you know,
35:51it's not just,
35:52because we both,
35:53we're going to win matches,
35:54we've got to bat us well.
35:55And, certainly,
35:56when we were put in,
35:57the guys went,
35:58and did their toss very well.
35:59I think the openers,
36:00gave us,
36:00gave us a reasonably good start.
36:01And, I think that paved the way,
36:03for Richie Richardson.
36:04So, the way he was playing,
36:05at the time,
36:05I think he took some chances.
36:07And, then you had,
36:07Desmond Haynes,
36:08you know,
36:09who was there then,
36:09with, you know,
36:10being the anchor man.
36:11And, I think,
36:11that has helped us,
36:12you know,
36:12to get to that particular,
36:14total of 418.
36:16You're saying,
36:16of course,
36:17Desmond's innings was very,
36:18very important.
36:18Very, very important,
36:19because, I think,
36:20there's a few people,
36:21you know,
36:21you know,
36:22obviously the,
36:23the,
36:23the,
36:31he,
36:32you know,
36:32he,
36:32or we were a little bit sorry,
36:34that he did get out at the time.
36:36But, you know,
36:36these things were,
36:37but I think the job was already done.
36:38Now,
36:39was there any talk to Richie Richardson,
36:40during that break,
36:41when he had been going,
36:42I think he was 50-odd,
36:43was there anything telling him,
36:44hold on, hold on,
36:45that sort of slow things down,
36:47and stay around?
36:47Well,
36:48you wouldn't try to tell him to slow things down,
36:50you know,
36:50but you'll try and,
36:51and give as much advice as possible,
36:53to,
36:54to try and let him calm things down a little bit.
36:56But,
36:57he had Desmond Haynes at the other end,
36:58who I think was talking to him a lot of times.
37:00But,
37:00as I said, you know,
37:02for that,
37:02the way which he was playing at the time,
37:03I think he needed,
37:04that particular ideal person,
37:06in,
37:07Desmond Haynes.
37:07And, you know,
37:08he did the job remarkably well.
37:10Now,
37:10your bowlers,
37:12sort of,
37:13pulled things around,
37:14and the last,
37:15couple of wickets,
37:15fell for West Indies,
37:16fell quickly.
37:17And I don't think that you,
37:19after having bowling them out,
37:20in the first innings,
37:21you didn't seem to have had any hesitation in the tournament,
37:24sending them back in.
37:24You wanted to get it over with as soon as possible.
37:26Yes,
37:27I don't know if you can remember,
37:29when we,
37:29when we just,
37:30I think we got the ninth wicket,
37:31we all had a little,
37:32little meeting,
37:34somewhat out there on the field in the middle.
37:35And,
37:36we had a little chat concerning,
37:38you know,
37:38what we think we should have done at the time.
37:40And,
37:40you know,
37:40the guys came up with the suggestion,
37:42and most certainly,
37:43I wanted to see them back again,
37:44you know,
37:44because,
37:45if you notice there,
37:46they haven't been doing all that well,
37:47with the bat against us.
37:48And,
37:49you know,
37:49being on the stress pressure,
37:51and being bowlers for 180,
37:52and after being 110 for one,
37:55you know,
37:55it's,
37:55you know,
37:55most certainly,
37:57the writing was on the wall,
37:58so,
37:59I put them in,
38:00and, you know,
38:01the bowlers responded very, very well.
38:03You weren't surprised,
38:04of course,
38:04because you know that you have a battery
38:06of good pace motors.
38:07Well,
38:07it's nice,
38:07you know,
38:08I've said before,
38:09you know,
38:09on interviews,
38:10it's nice when you've got a bunch of guys,
38:11you know,
38:11who are willing to bowl,
38:12and,
38:12you know,
38:12who will give an arm and a leg,
38:14you know,
38:14for them to perform.
38:16So,
38:17it's nice,
38:17you just stay there,
38:18and, you know,
38:19you just call the numbers.
38:20And looking forward to the next test match in Trinidad,
38:24what are your thoughts?
38:25The West Indies have won the series,
38:26so we play it easy for Noah?
38:28Not really,
38:28I think there was days for West Indies to pick it up,
38:30and it's always finished,
38:31so,
38:31we're just hoping to try and capitalise as much as possible.
38:34It's,
38:35if you remember over the years,
38:36we've been beaten a lot by England,
38:37so it's now over time,
38:38I think every dog has his day,
38:39so,
38:39you know,
38:40now that we're in the driving seat,
38:41I would just like to see all players continue in the same thing as they have done in the past.
38:45You don't like making predictions,
38:46you don't like looking forward more than one step at a time,
38:49but,
38:49maybe just one step,
38:51think with the,
38:52yeah,
38:52with the slow pain at the Trinidad.
38:54You're not going to cut me here at all.
38:56You're not going to cut me here at all,
38:57you know,
38:57by making any predictions,
38:59and saying,
38:59well,
39:00that we are going to win 5-0 now,
39:02it's, you know,
39:02because there are times you,
39:03you do come and stuck,
39:04and I hate to be in this sort of position,
39:05so,
39:06let me say that,
39:07you know,
39:07I'm just hoping that we can find the same sort of,
39:10life and,
39:10and figure that we have shown in those past,
39:12three test matches for the remaining two.
39:14In other words,
39:15you're not going to do a Muhammad Ali,
39:16you're going to do a smoky job.
39:18No, no, no, no,
39:18he's a smoky job.
39:19When the job's finished,
39:20then you'll talk.
39:21All right,
39:21maybe once again,
39:22congratulations on the fine win,
39:23and thank you very much.
39:24Thank you too,
39:25good.
39:26So West Indies wins,
39:28West Indies 418,
39:30England 189,
39:31and 199.
39:33Let's hope you enjoy.
