00:00Hello and welcome to our continued coverage of the Wills World Cup.
00:16Our match today comes from Pakistan from Group B and it's England against Holland.
00:20England have got a lot to prove today, they've had a terrible start to this tournament
00:23and have come down with all sorts of injuries, drop catches, you name it.
00:26It's been a tough time for Michael Atherton at the beginning of this tournament
00:29but they've got a relatively weak match today against Holland but they have to impress.
00:33Quite a few changes to the side, let's take a look at the England side.
00:37Still injuries to Robin Smith, Craig White has actually gone home now through injury.
00:41Dominic Cork has still got a knee injury but he will be playing.
00:44And Dermot Reeve has now travelled back to Pakistan but won't be playing in this match.
00:49Philip De Freitas moves in and the opening combination will be Alex Stewart and Neil Smith.
00:54Michael Atherton also not on form at the moment and has dropped himself further down the order.
00:59Well, England won the toss and decided to bat.
01:01Michael Atherton, as I said, the pressure is on but he's not opening the batsman.
01:05That's going to be Neil Smith and Alex Stewart.
01:07Let's go now to Pakistan for the start of the match.
01:10So here we have the first ball. It's England versus Holland from the Arbab Niaz Stadium in Peshaw.
01:17Certainly not a lot of bounce from the first ball but his stroke is good enough to get him off the mark.
01:32Alex Stewart, vastly experienced opening batsman for England in all forms of cricket.
01:38This is his 71st one day international and an average above 30 is a very healthy one.
01:45Not many players managed to average 40 in one day cricket.
01:49Neil Smith has just played the one match.
01:56Neil Smith on his way. They'll look for two here. It's a long chase for Paul Jan Bakker.
02:01He's cut it off. Stewart's happy to take the third. That's good running.
02:06Part of England's game that needs some work. Running between the wickets and the fielding has been rather lacklustre so far in this competition.
02:21Yes, I think also it's quite a bit easier to play the new ball.
02:25If it doesn't swing, the ball comes on when it's new a little bit on this slow pitch.
02:29That's bowled him out. Early success for Paul Jan Bakker and Holland.
02:35Holland are delighted. They've dismissed the England vice-captain.
02:40Alex Stewart's gone for five. England 11 for one.
02:45Well, this is just the sort of sloppy shot that we were talking about. Concentration.
02:50A little off spinner there. He was through the shot a little bit too early.
02:54Good bowling. Deceived Alex Stewart and has left England 11 for one.
03:00Graham Hick happily restored to full fitness after that pulled hamstring.
03:04In the first match against New Zealand at Ahmedabad in India.
03:09He missed the match against the UAE. Very impressive average.
03:13In the air. That's found the gap.
03:23Floris Janssen's after it, but he won't get there. First boundary of the day.
03:27Good cricket shot this from Neil Smith. Just the ball just fairly straight and he's just angled it, worked it on the onside.
03:46He's seen the gap. There's nobody out there. There's a man catching, so if he misses him at short mid-wicket, he knows there's plenty of runs through the mid-wicket area.
03:57That'll get to the extra cover fence. Superb timing from Graham Hick.
04:09He really does look in excellent touch.
04:13Oh, this is a classy shot. Just stands up, crisply hits it into the gap.
04:25That's over the top. It's beaten mid-on.
04:27Four to Smith. That's the job he's there to do. Hit the ball over the infield.
04:35Well, this is the shot he tried last over and mistimed it.
04:39This time he's got enough bat on it that it's gone just over and just wide off that mid-on position.
04:46That was good cricket from Neil Smith. And actually it was good field placing. Didn't clear him by too much. Just enough.
04:59That's gone fine. There's no fine leg down there, so that will be four.
05:04Well, this is a nice touch by Neil Smith. We saw him belligerently whack it over mid-on.
05:14This is an orthodox cricket shot. He waits for the ball and just tickles it round the corner.
05:20Very sweetly played. It was that. Just waited.
05:29Picked up again on the leg side.
05:31Floris Janssen. Another vain chase for him. He won't get there.
05:38Neil Smith charges on.
05:41Yes, he likes the bowling when it's fairly straight. He can work it with lots of bottom hand.
05:46I think the field placing is right, but you see, once he drifts down to the leg side,
05:51he tends to go a bit wider, mid-on. I think mid-on has to go a little bit wider to try and stop these shots.
05:56Has it been a bit too straight?
06:02Well, it's not a good blow.
06:05Well, he's playing much straighter in this match.
06:08And this is the key to it all. All the England batsmen, in fact, are playing a lot straighter and much more effective.
06:14It's a fine shot, this by Neil Smith. He had managed to get the mid-on to go a little bit wider from a previous four that he hit.
06:22And got him wide. Let's hit him straight.
06:26And all credit to him. One asks a question.
06:29When a non-specialist opener goes up to open to make the most of the first 15 overs.
06:37In the air. He's got him. Caught him.
06:39Well, Robin Jack was explaining how he steered the ball into gaps. This time straight to the man at short mid-wicket.
06:48And Neil Smith goes. It's 42 for two.
06:55This is not the first victim that short mid-wicket's picked up in this World Cup.
07:00Alex Stewart got out like that not long ago in one of the earlier games.
07:05Nicely caught. Hit it pretty crisply.
07:1242 for two.
07:13Now, Hindi commentary for the World's World Cup is available on Star Sports.

09:07Graham Thorpe's new batsman.
09:09His experience is really building up now.
09:1322 matches.
09:15Averaging 33.
09:21There is a lot of work to be done by the England batsman in this match.
09:25Very important that Graham Thorpe gets into good form.
09:27That Michael Atherton gets a few runs.
09:30Graham Hick feels his way back after injury.
09:32Some very important questions to be resolved.
09:34Might have even got away for four, as this will.
09:40Wide and full.
09:42And Graham Hick isn't going to miss out on that sort of delivery.
09:46Take a little bit of time to find the right length, but that certainly isn't it.
09:55That's in the air.
10:05Oh, fingertips and four.
10:07It's 52 for two.
10:15Well, it's a very positive stroke, but it really dies to the fingertips of Lubbers, the Holland captain.
10:31Who's got a touch on it.
10:34Had it very hard.
10:40Although that has to go down as a half chance.
10:42That's four runs.
10:53Raponzo was down that third man.
10:54Couldn't quite meet the ground.
10:56Chopping the square cut from Graham Thorpe who gets off the mark.
11:00A nice way to do it, too.
11:02Not the biggest ground in the world here in Peshaw.
11:05A very, very quick outfield.
11:08It's only gone about 15 metres or so wide of the third man,
11:11but from the moment he hit it, he had no chance of cutting it off.
11:19Cracking shot.
11:22Wide half folly.
11:24But still got to be put away and Hick did it emphatically.
11:30Stood up.
11:32And just hit through the line of the ball.
11:33Full flow of the arms.
11:35Take that.
11:39Thorpe loves that sweep shot.
11:41And it'll bring him four runs.
11:45Great effort from Lefebvre.
11:47In spite of that leg injury,
11:49fine work by the Dutchman on the boundary edge.
11:51But he can't stop that.
11:53Graham Thorpe, four.
11:54Conceau's bowled pretty well to Thorpe so far.
11:59And that really is a good sweep.
12:01Roll and rest nicely.
12:03Just watch this effort on the boundary.
12:05Certainly a man who's not very fit at all,
12:07and that won't do his groin any good, I'm sure.
12:10Chase for Lubbers.
12:23And he's not going to get there.
12:27Four to Graham Thorpe.
12:29He's enjoying these two gentle off spinners, is Graham Thorpe.
12:33Well, that really was a very good shot indeed.
12:36And another variation of the sweep.
12:38The important thing here is how fine he gets it.
12:40Just letting the ball run off the face of the bat.
12:42And beating that man at a short, fine leg.
12:47And that fast outfield lets it run all the way.
12:50Good stop by Ponzo.
12:55Well, half stop.
12:59Thorpe gets through for the single.
13:04Oh, that's a cracking shot.
13:06That's all the way.
13:07And six runs.
13:14Well, he picked his spot very nicely, Graham Thorpe.
13:17He's been high in that mid-wicket boundary.
13:19He gets outside the line of the ball very early.
13:23And just whips it to the mid-wicket.
13:31Well, he couldn't say it was badly bowled,
13:33but he is going right at the edge of the crease, you notice.
13:36And that gets through too.
13:37And that's four runs.
13:42And 50.
13:43Well played, Graham Thorpe.
13:49Some good punching shots at first.
13:51And of course, he's very strong in that cut.
13:59Yes, he's looked in very good touch today.
14:02It's the two off-spinners for Holland at a very gentle pace.
14:05Very healthy run rate building up.
14:21That's very well placed indeed.
14:23Beautifully placed.
14:24Which shows the exact spot to bisect those two fielders.
14:35Yes, it's the perfect example of what I was saying about the off-spin is so slow.
14:40It's given Graham Hick time to get back.
14:43Pick his spot.
14:44And play a very nice, well-placed back foot pull.
14:48And that's Graham Hick, 50.
14:58So, the half century for Hick, coming very shortly after the one scored by Thorpe.
15:08And the partnership is 100 exactly.
15:12142 for two.
15:13142.
15:18Well, Bolwell, what happened then?
15:22That was a mystery ball.
15:24Graham Thorpe hasn't got a clue what the mystery was all about.
15:31Well, he's just looking to work it onto the onside.
15:34And it surprised him a bit here.
15:36With quite a bit of turn.
15:37Gets it very close to the stumps when he delivers the ball.
15:54Big shout for WBW.
15:59Katie Francis, Sri Lankan umpire.
16:00Well, this is a really predetermined shot.
16:04You see the foot's down early.
16:07By the time it hits him, he's outside off stump.
16:12Delicately played.
16:13And that might run away to Thorpe.
16:15It's a very quick outfield.
16:17It does.
16:19We've seen Graham Thorpe play that shot a few times already today.
16:22And he does play it so well.
16:23And in the old days,
16:26that's used to sweep and sweep very square.
16:29Modern cricket, very, very fine.
16:31Four runs.
16:37That's a fine edge.
16:40All very exasperating.
16:42But don't have a slip there,
16:45which is most teams' decision at this stage of an innings anyway.
16:50It's about the safest place you can hit the ball too.
16:55Graham Thorpe looking to play it fine.
16:56Not quite that fine.
16:58He won't care.
16:59Four more runs to him.
17:01Graham Thorpe on 89, off 81 balls.
17:03That's a very good strike rate.
17:06He has been in total control today,
17:08as has he.
17:09He had off 91.
17:11Good partnership developing here for England.
17:16Big appeal and out.
17:18One par KT Francis didn't hesitate for one second.
17:25Oh, Roland Leferb getting the breakthrough.
17:27Holland were looking for.
17:29Graham Thorpe out.
17:30Very, very good innings.
17:32And then 185 to three.
17:37A little delighted there.
17:38We'll just see Thorpe just playing across the line a little bit.
17:41Too much in line.
17:44KT Francis, no hesitation whatsoever.
17:47185 for three.
17:49Graham Thorpe out for 89.
17:59Michael Atherton, the new batsman,
18:01off the marked first ball.
18:02Crowds built up quite nicely here in Pichard.
18:16That's bowled him out.
18:18Atherton looking for the cut.
18:22Lubbers picks up his first wicket.
18:24Well, that was a surprise.
18:29Michael Atherton could have got down the pitch
18:32and hit that ball straight probably anywhere for one or two.
18:35And he's looking to run it.
18:37It's too straight.
18:38Just turns on.
18:39He's looking to run it.
18:40Fine of the man at short third man.
18:44I'll be disappointed with only spending a little time at the wicket.
18:47Children 12 for four.
18:50Neil Fairbrother,
18:52the Lancashire left-hander,
18:53is England's number six today.
18:59Excellent one-day figures.
19:01That'll go away for four.
19:10Good contact from Fairbrother.
19:18Yes, he just drifted this ball onto Leg Stump,
19:22which is easy then for the batsman to get it behind square.
19:25He's going to bowl it straight in that.
19:28Off Stump, off the middle.
19:29Clark gets a boot on that.
19:50Pretty good football in this for 47.
19:59It's gone away fine.
20:11Four leg buys.
20:13England won't mind how they come.
20:142.30 street now they're in.
20:20Five more overs after this.
20:22It's gone fine.
20:33Fine legs up in the circle.
20:35That's another boundary for England.
20:36This time it's leg buys,
20:38signalled by umpire Katie Francis from Sri Lanka.
20:41Well, I know it was a slice of luck for England that it went for four leg buys,
20:47but it was just drifting down leg side.
20:50Attempted Yorker.
20:51It was trying to get the Yorker in very straight.
20:58Floris Janssen to Graham Hick.
21:02Lovely shot.
21:05Oh, Miss Field and four.
21:07Is Adrian the culprit?
21:16Yes, through no fault of the bowlers.
21:18The bowler very sensibly kept the ball pitched up.
21:21Even when Graham Hick advanced and gave himself room,
21:24that should have been one, two at the most.
21:28Bowlers have to be backed up by a good feeling,
21:31especially when they're under pressure.
21:34That's a big one.
21:38The fielder can't get there.
21:40It's six.
21:45Well, I think that's disappointing for the bowler.
21:48I think he's bowled very well.
21:50And so is Lefebvre at the other end.
21:51At the depth, it's always difficult.
21:54He made the batsman hit to his field placings.
21:58And I think he should have caught that.
21:59He came in a couple of yards.
22:01He should have stood still.
22:02He should have stood still.
22:29He should have stood still.
22:30He should have stood still.
22:31He should have stood still.
22:32He should have stood still.
22:33He should have stood still.
22:34He should have stood still.
22:35He should have stood still.
22:36He should have stood still.
22:37He should have stood still.
22:38He should have stood still.
22:39He should have stood still.
22:40He should have stood still.
22:41He should have stood still.
22:42He should have stood still.
22:43He should have stood still.
22:44He should have stood still.
22:45He should have stood still.
22:46He should have stood still.
22:47He should have stood still.
22:48He should have stood still.
22:49He should have stood still.
22:50He should have stood still.
22:51He should have stood still.
22:52He should have stood still.
22:53He should have stood still.
22:54He should have stood still.
22:55He should have stood still.
24:26And Lubbers to give them a chance of having a go at that 279 by England.
24:33Well, that's the Holland team.
24:34They're going to have a chance to bat up against England in just a moment.
24:37We'll take a short break.
24:38When we come back, we'll have their innings.
25:26The Vimo, the art of imagination.
25:29The all-new Mahindra Armada.
25:57The world is your playground.
26:02Look inside today's computers.
26:06You'll find something pretty amazing.
26:08The Intel Pentium processor.
26:10It gives software more life, more action, more energy.
26:18So if you want your software to really move, make sure your computer has the Intel Pentium processor.
26:40Dominic Cork, 17 matches, 24 wickets, economy rate of 4.17 per over.
26:48Well, that's a little bit of a flick outside the off-stump to a ball that was leaving.
27:13Nolan Clark, the oldest man in the World Cup tournament, but a man who has successfully put back the ball in the past.
27:21Very straight and given out by umpire Francis.
27:32That's a huge setback for Holland.
27:35Nolan Clark goes without troubling the scorers and Holland now are one for one.
27:42If Dominic Cork hits someone on the pad, it's nearly always pretty close.
27:51There's no doubt about that.
27:53This went under.
27:56Dead straight.
27:57Nolan Clark out for nought.
27:58Holland one for one.
27:59Tim DeLayda promoted to number three.
28:06Once again, Cork too good for them.
28:11Nolan Clark, the first Dutch wicket to fall.
28:15Not getting very far forward.
28:18Front foot just about on the popping crease.
28:21Huge shout as usual from Dominic Cork.
28:23And umpire Francis answering in the affirmative.
28:35Off the edge through the slips.
28:36That's a disappointment for Dominic Cork.
28:40He's bowling splendidly.
28:43But Holland have their first boundary.
28:47First and second slipper pretty close to one another.
28:53Couldn't carry by Miles.
28:55And I think it also got a funny bounce.
28:57Hick looked like he had it covered for a moment or two.
29:03Lovely shot.
29:04Wide of mid on.
29:07Martin's already given up the chase.
29:09That's a good looking boundary four.
29:15There you go.
29:16As soon as he starts singing the praises.
29:17With the accuracy and the line.
29:20De Freitas.
29:21That's just two straights.
29:23Nicely timed.
29:24And only one fielder out there.
29:27Once it was past him.
29:32That'll go fine.
29:36Four runs.
29:38Caught following De Freitas.
29:39This is his bag.
29:40Example and slipping the ball into the backspin's legs.
29:43This outfield is like lightning.
29:47There's not a lot of grass on it.
29:48And it's not the biggest either.
29:50That I've seen.
29:52Only got to get just a little bit of bat on it.
29:55Or even a pad.
29:56Whatever.
29:56And it'll race away for four.
29:58Fine leg is finer than normal.
30:01To try and negate that.
30:02But had no chance on that occasion.
30:05It's on the other side of Martin.
30:11And that's another boundary.
30:25There's timing.
30:27It's a length delivery.
30:29Let's just time that off his knee.
30:30So.
30:35Two England opening bowlers.
30:36Having started brilliantly.
30:38In their opening overs.
30:44That's beaten couple points.
30:49Few problems here for England.
30:58Three fours for Tim De Lader.
31:00Nothing wrong with this stroke at all.
31:04Full stretch with the left foot.
31:06Body weight through the ball.
31:08Stayed down and through the shot.
31:10And had the better at cover point.
31:16Lovely stroke through mid-wicket.
31:22It's a quality, quality batting stroke from Peter Cantrell.
31:27Ball ball just back of a length.
31:34At the most of his height.
31:35Allowed it to come right to him.
31:38Before just steering it past the short mid-wicket for four.
31:42Beautiful stroke.
31:43Thorpe's missed it as well.
31:53England have been working on their fielding.
31:59And my goodness, they need to.
32:00Initially.
32:06Initially.
32:07Getting a weight to make sure the ball got past Hick.
32:09Which it did.
32:11And then Thorpe commits himself.
32:13And misses.
32:13Cracking shot.
32:25The only movement that time was straight to the boundary.
32:29Lovely timing.
32:36Waited for the ball.
32:37Just leaned on it.
32:38Never forced it.
32:43He appeals for BW.
32:44The ball struck the pad first.
32:45He's given out.
32:50Pad first.
32:51Bit of bat on it.
32:52And dead straight.
32:58Yes, he thought about that, did the umpire.
33:00The batsman didn't really get anywhere.
33:02It was a little, little stride forward.
33:04Didn't go much in front of the batting crease.
33:07And Steve Buckner thought about that.
33:09And I think that was a good decision in the end.
33:11Holland, 46 for two.
33:13Steve Lubbers is the Holland captain.
33:16Then he can come in batsman.
33:17Just a couple of matches.
33:21Averaging five.
33:28And that's right between the two men out there.
33:32And his four runs.
33:35Extra applause because the half century comes up.
33:3753 for two.
33:42That's very good positive cricket here from Holland.
33:44They're not being overawed by the situation.
33:48They're going for their shots.
33:51Although it's a big total to get.
33:55Another beautiful stroke.
33:59You'll see better on that.
34:04What a wonderful shot.
34:06Really was.
34:07He hit that with a great timing.
34:09A lot of power.
34:11Absolutely rattled away with this.
34:13Bam.
34:15I mean look.
34:16He went past the fielder.
34:17Only about two yards wide of him.
34:20And he couldn't get it.
34:25Gone.
34:26Caught behind.
34:27Just a little push.
34:28Outside the off stump.
34:30And Jack Russell doesn't miss those.
34:34So disappointing end to.
34:37Captain Lubbers.
34:39Innings.
34:40Scored just nine.
34:42Well eight deliveries now.
34:44It was seven.
34:45There's the line that De Freitas was bowling early in the innings and for some reason he changed and bowled directly at the stumps.
34:52And that was the corridor of uncertainty.
34:54And Russell doing the rest.
34:55Holland.
34:55And 70 for three.
34:57And 70 for three.
35:03Just 25 years of age.
35:05Only his second match.
35:07Hasn't been out yet so hasn't got an average.
35:10England have used four bowlers.
35:12This is Darren Goff to continue.
35:13This is Darren Goff to continue.
35:1412 of his first.
35:17And that might well be four.
35:19It's gone very fine.
35:20And it is.
35:26Well not a good start for Darren Goff.
35:28At that time it was a victory to him but it was a thick edge.
35:32And that might be four more.
35:39And that might be four more.
35:43Darren Goff distraught.
35:45To go for 12 in your first over is one thing.
35:49And then eight off the next two when really you've won the battle.
35:56It's very unfortunate.
36:04Whoopsie.
36:05That could be out.
36:06And is.
36:10Well Philip De Freyda is delighted with that.
36:12He's been working hard at that one.
36:13But adjusting his line occasionally to De Laida.
36:17And he gets the crucial breakthrough.
36:19The fourth wicket.
36:21New batsman.
36:22Bas Zederant.
36:24Just 18 years of age.
36:27Youngest.
36:29Member of the.
36:30Dutch team.
36:37In the air.
36:38Over the top.
36:40And that'll run away for four.
36:43Nothing shy about this lead.
36:47That's a very good shot indeed.
36:48And certainly not the easiest shot in the book to play.
36:51When Los Gunners turning a lot.
36:53In towards you.
36:54You've really got to make sure you get pitched to the pitch of the ball.
36:57Good shot.
37:05Beautiful stroke.
37:05Well you may not see a better shot than that.
37:12For the rest of the day.
37:13That really was a terrific shot.
37:16Pass for Nordvig.
37:18Just reacting to a ball.
37:19Slightly over pitch from Philip De Freyda.
37:22Just watch the way he plays right through the line of that.
37:24That really is a terrific shot indeed.
37:26Well that's a cracking shot.
37:31The ball asked for it in a way.
37:33And then it gave the batsman space for the first time.
37:371.24 for four.
37:38It's in the air.
37:45And it's six runs.
37:47Pass.
37:53Pass.
37:53Pass.
37:55Young 17 year old.
38:03Well that really is a good hit by the Dutch batsman.
38:07It's going over the line.
38:09Well played indeed.
38:10amazing how you can actually uh the indian side maybe the pakistan side look at the dutch sign
38:22on the uh england attack four cracking runs very good shot again from young bus zader hunt
38:31and underneath that and uh the bonus there is he hit it very straight indeed well played
38:35it was a bit too wide and 50 for class fan north wake a very happy man highest score for holland
38:50in the world cup to date and what a wonderful amount of pleasure that must give him and his
38:56teammates who have registered a 50 against the side such as england
39:08was hit that is it that miles goodness me
39:13second six for ten nordwijk it was one at 12. well he must have a good eye and he's confident
39:27souped up with a half century he's just stood there and delivered the ball into rows and rows back great
39:35strike that should be out that's a bit deep mid off man hundred it's out simple catch
39:47died gloriously of lovely innings nice look it for peter martin who's bowled quite well
39:54what a splendid performance by this young man crowd rising to him and quite rightly so he's
40:00given him some good entertainment some good cricket
40:06super knock
40:12golf the fielder safe pair of hands
40:17so the end of a marvelous innings 64 in 82 balls 195 for five new batsman roland lefevre
40:26he's come out to join this young man who is obviously hoping to notch up his first world cup 50
40:41crowd expect when they get
40:44what a nice shot to bring it up with two through the covers
40:54pretty modest man well i don't know if he's overcome with emotion or not
41:01it should be out it's hit it high and it's out caught long on
41:05good strike only in the middle of the bat but it's quite a big boundary down there at long on
41:12a little bit too much height
41:17and it was a nice easy catch in the end
41:19yeah he's no need to feel that disappointed though he's had a fine day splendid batting performance
41:32and in the end he's hold out like most of the other batsmen because it's such a big total 208 for six
41:47but then if you pull it outside the off stump and there's no third man back
41:59yeah but that wasn't just outside off still that was a good six inches wide
42:02and that is the end of the over the end of the 50 overs 230
42:23six and england win by 49 runs so then pretty much as expected holland not able to match the run rate
42:29of england overall england running out winners by 49 runs let's have a quick check on the batting for
42:34holland though and it has to be said that there is some hope for the future for sure for holland with
42:39a great partnership by bass zordera there with 54 runs and glass of van norwich with 64 runs there
42:47the two youngsters putting on an impressive showing for holland and certainly bodes well for the future
42:52for the netherlands we'll take a short break we've got plenty more cricket action coming up in a moment so
