00:23Welcome to Edgeman, it's been a fine but blustery day here all day for the fourth of the season
00:28In a case of three matches, limited overs, 55 overs aside England West Indies for the Texnico Trophy
00:34And a full house, a marvellous turn out of 80 and a half thousand people, all the seats pre-sold
00:40And what a spectacle they had in store for them
00:42Of course they came to see Ian Botham, Botham back after 22 months out of international cricket
00:48And Graeme Hick, a debutant, seven years waiting to qualify
00:52Also on the England side, Richard Illingworth is a man who has come in to make an international debut
00:58So let's take a look at those teams, Graeme Gooch is captain there, Mike Atherton will open the batting with
01:03him
01:03They're coming in at three, and a very strong hand of batsman indeed when you think that Illingworth is number
01:0911
01:10And West Indies familiar line-up, but Richard's coming in early this time at number four
01:16And the fast bowlers Marshall, Ambrose, Walsh and Paterson
01:20So let's join it now, last ball of the first over of the day
01:23To Freitas is going to Greenwich, it's two for no with you
01:29Well, pretty close
01:33Again another of the improvements in the England forwarding side into his left hand as well
01:41Chris Lewis
01:49You know, that was a useful delivery, but erm, fairly loose shot
02:07And then a half volley
02:11First round of the day
02:12First round of the day
02:27And that is the area
02:30That's exactly right, it's not a quick delivery, but it's right on that grassy area, just nips back between bat
02:36and body
02:45Ah, that's the best ball of the morning
02:49And lucky for the craters, and very lucky for simmers
03:07Very good, that's the result of the frustration, created, pressure created, playing groups takes the catch, and what a good
03:16start for England
03:18So there's the pressure I talked about
03:20That ball, short of a length, almost good length, not there to be hit
03:25Simmers don't restrain himself, as I said, he's a player that likes to get after the bowling
03:30He likes to play shots, he's not being allowed to
03:32But short of a length, he's trying to hit it, West Indian style, on the up, off the back foot
03:37That's an easy, simple catch, at mid-off
03:41You just see it from this angle, with Lewis putting it in, short of a length, on the right line
03:46Perhaps just coming back a millimetre or so, and well, those are the sort of catches any mid-off, though
03:55New batsman now, Richie Richardson
03:57Yes, watching Richard Richardson play, a typical West Indian batsman likes to hit the ball in the up
04:03You do feel if it swings or moves about, it will have problems
04:10No better example
04:16Yes, he tends to play the ball in the up a lot, it doesn't go a long way forward or
04:19back
04:19And you can see there, the feet were just really shuffling across
04:23Well, that's what a lot of the crowd have fed their money to see today
04:27Ian Botham back in action in the big time
04:42First ball in the comeback
04:45We've made in rickets for Ian Botham
04:49About, er, four runs per over from him
04:56Galp, filling left with Petra
04:58A rick up to Botham
05:00The boys home there, Neil is back again
05:07Well, I think it was Galp, what happened
05:09The ball did swing, and they say, Richie doesn't get his feet to the pitch of the balls
05:13But he's still playing there, and anything that swings is vulnerable to
05:18You've got to really lean into the ball when you're playing in England
05:21You can't if you have to put back foot on the air
05:22And that's the mistake you made, and
05:25Well, er, I love you for botham
05:29Now we're coming out to replace Richie Richardson
05:32He's, er, a county teammate of Botham's
05:37Captain of the West Indies side for Richardson
05:41And the first change now, coming from Vueling
05:44That's Dade Pringle
05:50Just out of future's reach
05:53Well, Richard's got three there, he was only ambling away for two
06:05And, er, Glenleach gave him a bit of a hurry up
06:07And, er, Glenleach gave him a bit of a hurry up
06:24And again, a little bit of outswing there
06:27For Botham, they were all moving quite a lot
06:29And, Glenleach been drawing to the shot that he probably wouldn't have thrown in the test match
06:34But, very near the edge
06:47He seizes, er, so quickly
06:49On anything that, er, is in any way loose
07:03It's just out of his reach again, and that's a leading edge
07:14It's the second time that Richie has tried to work the outswinger
07:17Tryna work it a little bit to the onside
07:30We were bowled, at, er, late swing again
07:37I guess I think all West Indies batsmen have always been a bit vulnerable to the ball swings out
07:41And, er, Viv is no exception
07:44This was a good length ball just going out
07:46And that would probably have been a catch if the second slip had been in it
07:49Just carried up into the second slip
07:58No ball signalled by, er, John Hampshire
08:02I don't think Glenleach changed his shot at all
08:06No, that was a particularly good delivery
08:08Drew him into the shot, and, er, he certainly played the same way
08:12No ball or not
08:19There's a good shot
08:20There's a good shot
08:22Right off the meat of the bat
08:26On a beautiful test
08:39Oh, very close, and...
08:42He's out, he's gone
08:47Now I'm ready for both of them
08:50There's a lovely little out-singer from Ian Baltham
08:54And Gordon Dreddage
08:56He can't avoid just having a little niblet
08:58Trying to run it down, through the slips
09:00Or just bounces, leaves him
09:02And he's trying to run it down to third man
09:04Takes the edge
09:08Gus Logie is the new batsman
09:14That's an amazing shot by Gus Logie
09:17The first ball he received
09:18Clipped at the toes
09:19For a long six
09:24And that didn't limp over the boundary line
09:26It flew
09:2720 or 30 yards into the crowd
09:29Wow, this is an amazing shot
09:31The ball just drifting down
09:32It's his first ball
09:34He just absolutely wellied it to the boundary
09:48He dropped it
09:50Chris Lewis backward point
09:51Well, this is a cracking shot from Logie
09:59But it could have been caught
10:00But quickly, right into the midriff of Louis
10:14He didn't know where it went
10:16Where it has gone in fact
10:18Is to deeply lick it
10:19The ball runs
10:21Now I doubted that Richards had any idea where that ball went
10:26Well, this is the most outrageous slot that you'll see in one day cricket
10:37Up they go
10:40Both of them's hand goes up but the umpires doesn't go up
10:42John Hampshire at the key end there
10:47You see the movement here
10:48You see the movement here
10:49The ball just cutting away
10:50Just holding its line a little bit
10:59Oh, dropped him
11:04Not amused
11:05Not amused
11:07And every right to be upset by that
11:10Because Viv Richards
11:12Pushed forward, found the edge
11:14And Michael Atherton at first
11:15Put it down
11:32It's in the air but it's safe this time
11:35Didn't say it was under control
11:39It went to an orthodox mid-on
11:41Mid-on standing a little wide
11:45Well, Liam Baltham may be across at that
11:47But that ball could have gone anywhere
11:48Look, it's gone four foot, six foot high
11:51It went about two yards wide of mid-on
11:56Well, here's another bowling option coming up
11:58Graham Gooch
12:01Is going to ball himself
12:13Well, that's a great shot
12:20It wasn't a good ball
12:21And of course you're playing with a great man's strength
12:24Poor M's
12:25Well, I think there's some bad thinking in a bad ball
12:28Just medium slow pace
12:30Bowling in his favourite area
12:32Legs stumping outside
12:33You're just asking for trouble
12:39What's in the air and that's going to drop into space
12:44A strange ball from Gooch
12:46Got some extra bounce from somewhere
12:48And had Gus Logie playing as a finish shot outside of Stump
13:03In the air
13:04And caught
13:05The Freitas
13:10The Freitas
13:10That's how Gus Logie started using this
13:12But he flipped it
13:13A mile over the Freitas
13:14His head for six
13:16This time
13:17Both of them is in here
13:18He deserves the luck
13:18He's bowed really well
13:19And the Freitas
13:21Well, I would like a rugby pullback
13:23Got nicely under that
13:24And caught it
13:24Very comfortably indeed
13:26So he caught the Freitas
13:27For a basing
13:28For 18
13:30Well, he's come in playing like that
13:32As Gus Logie
13:32Right from the first ball
13:34He's been throwing the bat
13:35At every ball
13:36He's had a chance to hit
13:37And he's died the same way
13:39This ball is flipping it down the leg side
13:41He's got under it
13:42And it's spooned up in the air
13:44A long time
13:45Given the Freitas
13:46Who's one of the best fielders in the England side
13:48A great opportunity to just
13:50Take it nice and comfortably
13:55Really that poor shot
13:56When you've got a man back there
13:57You've got a man back
13:59A fine leg
14:00A man back for this catch
14:01Exactly for this type of shot
14:03Really poor thinking
14:04And very poor execution
14:08And the next batsman to come in
14:10Is Karl Hooper
14:21He's a young Diana
14:23Who's just 24 years old
14:25And have no great experience
14:29Now I can't believe
14:30With bowling balls like that
14:31To a new batsman
14:32You can't have another slipping
14:33Look at this
14:34This is a leg seamer
14:35Leg cutter
14:36Just moves off the pitch
14:37He missed that
14:38With 4 inches
14:39The way the ball went
14:49And one end to that
14:50Next 4 runs
15:11And that might be out
15:12Top edge
15:13And it is
15:15Karl Hooper takes the catch
15:16It's the end of Richards
15:19And now West Indies
15:21In all sorts of trouble
15:2284 for 5
15:26Well Richard delighted
15:27With that
15:28With a slower ball
15:29Probably an off-cutter
15:30Or something like that
15:31He's completely deceived with Richards
15:35There you see
15:35There you see
15:36And just cut the ball there
15:37An off-cutter
15:38And certainly
15:39Richards was too well
15:40Around the shot altogether
15:41But again
15:42If he'd been hitting the ball
15:43Straight
15:43If he'd been hitting the ball
15:45With a square leg
15:46He would probably just get away with it
15:48But it's in a cross the line
15:49And that was the only result
15:51Of them having
15:51A comfortable catch there
15:53For Neil Farrell
15:55And now Dijon
15:56And Hooper
15:58Both fresh at the wicket
16:00Still another 20 odd minutes to go
16:02Before lunch
16:03England
16:03Well in the driving seat
16:07And there's a man who's helped
16:08Put them there
16:09With three wickets so far
16:10And could have done even better than that
16:20Now England attacking
16:22No sweeper
16:23And that's four rounds
16:40Now that might be four rounds
16:42It's a chase
16:43And four it is
16:44And that was a loose delivery
16:47He's picked short
16:48Two or three times
16:49In this spell
16:50And each time
16:51He's paid the penalty
16:53Nearly that's the only way
16:54In which batsmen can score freely
16:56This morning
16:58So it was a good shot again
16:59And he waited for it
17:00And then
17:00Kept the head down
17:02And square cuts
17:03And away it went for
17:04Four
17:12And then
17:13Oh
17:13A few of the guy went out
17:14That's the fourth wicket
17:17And
17:17You can say
17:18Well he doesn't deserve that
17:19So a heap of gun
17:21Quarterly wicket
17:21And West Indies
17:23Now 9 to 8 to 6
17:32Well that's a good delivery
17:34Lovely lane
17:34Just that little bit of movement
17:37and possibly just a little bit wide, but I think he probably just had to play.
17:42Maybe some players will let that go, but it was lovely length and line,
17:45and just drew him into it with a bit of swing, and that was the result.
17:49It was comfortable catch behind for us.
17:55It is just a touch ride, but Hooper hasn't been in all that long,
17:59and not close enough to draw him into the shot.
18:03Now, here's the new batsman Malcolm Marshall,
18:06and one wonders just what he'll make of these conditions,
18:08because with a bit of seaming and cutting about and a little bit of swing,
18:12he, of all the West Indies bowlers, is best suited to take advantage of them.
18:20Richard Innes is going to get his first opportunity.
18:40He's on out, and West Indies now 103 for seven.
18:49Well, Jeff is going to be very happy with that, just before lunch.
18:54Before the line.
18:56He didn't quite get at it with his legs, and hit it firmly, but not that hard,
19:01and just lifted it a couple of feet, and Lewis doing the rest at the middle of it.
19:04So, that seems a real desperate...
19:10...and taking a strike, just totally embarrassing.
19:15Well, straight away, Chris Lewis right on the spot,
19:19making Kirtley Ambrose search outside the off stump.
19:25It's 107 for seven now, and 38 overs gone.
19:29It's very important for the West Indies that they try to get through their full 55 overs.
19:34It's almost a criminal offence not to bat out your full allocation of overs
19:39in these limited overs internationals,
19:41but they're quite a distance away at the moment.
19:53It's again a little movement off the seam.
19:56Bowling has been well directed today.
20:00Well, lovely little bit of zip in the bowling,
20:03a bit of bounce, great line outside off stump.
20:07Grating problems every time the seam ballers get it on the right line,
20:11just in that little grassy area, just outside off stump.
20:27That went right off the middle of the bat,
20:30just beating Fairbrother at Backwood Point,
20:33and getting too fast for the man down deep side.
20:55I don't think Lewis saw that until it was within about 10 yards of him.
21:00Well, this is what I mean by having a second slip and even a goalie.
21:04This is a forcing back foot shot, the ball bounces,
21:07falls short of the man saving one run at point,
21:10but the gully would have snaffled that up easily.
21:13It stays up in the air a long time.
21:15It's only about three yards short.
21:18I really do feel at times that,
21:20and I don't want to be critical because of this,
21:22has been a really fine England performance,
21:24but I just feel that we could have put a little more pressure
21:27on the Westinghese batsman with a second slip and a gully at times.
21:36And the need for that is that the great deep galley.
21:40Chris Lewis in almost exactly the same position,
21:43Jeffrey, where he dropped the NLP in both of them earlier.
21:45Marshall, the man to go,
21:47and he's out for 7-8.
21:50Yes, this was a much easier, much more simple catch,
21:53came much steadier.
21:54The one of Ian Baltham rocketed into him,
21:57almost a square cut.
21:58This one is a forcing back foot shot,
22:01perfect catch to take at gully.
22:03Comes nice and steady, not too hard,
22:06and he doesn't miss many of those.
22:08It's a good pair of hands normally, Chris Lewis.
22:16Gordon Walsh comes to the crease now.
22:27I'm not sure of Ian Baltham.
22:37A lot of the sort of things you like at slip on a cold day.
22:42Trying to make the catch,
22:43and probably just catching a little bit on the wrist,
22:46and there's certainly a stinger bit on day I like to do.
22:57He's hit that a long way down the ground.
23:00He wouldn't knock it down as the ultimate of the elegance.
23:04A little bit of the freighters for that matter.
23:11It was a fine blow, and that's what Till then Baltham were expected to do.
23:24That's what Courtney wanted.
23:26He's pitched up.
23:29And extremely valuable down the road.
23:33Tall man, and he's got a good eye.
23:45Oh, that's a great shot.
23:48It really is.
23:56Oh, that's a magnificent shot by Walsh.
24:00Lower pull toss, which is not the easiest, and made a lot of room for himself,
24:04and that went pretty straight between Houser Clever and Muddhoff,
24:07and just about six runs nearly.
24:09Beautiful shot.
24:16And there again, now this one, that really is an astounding shot.
24:20It's the longest boundary on the ground.
24:22It's only just in front of Stray on the offside, and it's gone for six.
24:27That's a remarkable shot.
24:41There was one more ball to go.
24:43West Indies did extend their innings to 55 overs.
24:46A couple more runs came their way, 173 for eight.
24:50Very fine partnership, that of 52, by Kirtley Ambrose and Courtney Walsh.
24:55Good slogging, very effective indeed.
24:58But the bowling, it was excellent, especially Philip De Freitas in the morning with that
25:02new ball.
25:03And then Ian Botham with his four wickets, a good control performance by him,
25:08and a good promising and encouraging start by Richard Illingworth.
25:11Ten overs, one maiden, one for 20.
25:15The 13 extras, so what was required?
25:17England needing 174 runs to win, and that was a run rate of 3.16 runs per over.
25:24Let's join their effort now, the first ball of the Indians.
25:28Kirtley Ambrose opposed to Graham Gooch.
25:34Starts with a no ball, and that has been a problem in recent matches for the West Indian
25:39ballers.
25:40They've given the opposition anything up to three extra overs by a goal in no balls.
25:50Now, the blow struck straight away by Ambrose.
25:57Graham Gooch goes on the W, looked to me as though he was in, well, in no man's land
26:02with his feet.
26:17What a moment for Graham Hick to make his debut in international cricket.
26:36The tremendous delivery there from Ambrose is angled two in, come back at the seam.
26:43That was angled in and then went away like a lake brick.
26:47Now, very well in the West Indies, Patrick Patterson, well, very straight and fast.
26:54Didn't do all that much with the ball in the air, but he may do it here off the seam.
27:04Brilliant, very appealing.
27:08Cody Drenic.
27:16Certainly the West Indies are keyed up, they're, I think they're still in the chance.
27:21Drenic there around about the 40 years of age mark, but he's still a fine athlete.
27:41And that's a lovely shot, and that's the sort of batsmanship that the whole of the country
27:49would be very important for Graham Hick.
28:05Well, Graham Book staying back here.
28:07That ball would have hit three quarters way up the stumps, he has a tendency to stay back
28:13when he ought to get forward.
28:25Well, that's a lovely shot.
28:27It was in the air.
28:35And that's four runs, it would be some release of Michael Astor.
28:42Replacing Kirk Yambos at the city end, Malcolm Marshall.
28:56And it's all run.
28:59Optimistic.
29:04What a good feature of England's cricket in this match.
29:07They have run well in the short space of the first ten overs of this match, and here's
29:11a typical example of good calling, good response, and good running.
29:17Yes, nice drop to shot there by Hickford.
29:20Lovely backing up by Atherton.
29:23Excellent feeling, but really.
29:28No, this will be more like a county match.
29:30Courtney Walsh of Gloucestershire.
29:33Sparkling Monk of Marshall of Hampshire.
29:36And both of these batsmen will have seen plenty of them at three-day level.
29:48Oh, that's just about the best ball Walsh has bold.
29:53There was lift there as well.
30:00A ring of three-thirds on the offside, two on the arm.
30:05Just that one single slip.
30:10Oh, it might have been a no goal, but my word, it was painful.
30:20Again, this just gives you the impression how they're rushing in.
30:24A lot of bounce here, look at this, right up into the midriff.
30:34Oh, it might be out. And it is. That's the end of Hick.
30:39Nicely caught his slip.
30:41And whether it was one slip or two, it didn't matter where.
30:44Good bit of bond by Marshall, he's deserved it.
30:47And that's the end of the innings which Hick has waited seven years for.
30:51Out for 14, 41 for two.
30:56Well, Malcolm Marshall worked at quite a bit of pace here.
30:59Can't help but feel that Hick's trying to run this to third man.
31:02The face keeps opening.
31:04Neat catch. Very, very low down. That's a nice catch, that.
31:07I can't help but feel that Hick contributed to his own downfall there.
31:12He's apt to open the face and always tries to run the ball down to third man.
31:17Wide of the slips.
31:20Watch here that the face just opens.
31:22That face is sliding open a little bit.
31:24And that's a lovely catch.
31:30Alan Lamb, the new batsman.
31:50Polar guys.
31:5350s up, 51 for two.
32:0350s up, 51 for two.
32:05Another no ball.
32:08That was very frustrating.
32:10Moving kitchen is the empire.
32:14Thirdly ambrose.
32:1712 no balls.
32:20Five wide.
32:21Five wide.
32:32Good shot.
32:38Really as a sign of a tough batsman.
32:43The fact that you're going to lose a single opportunity.
32:45It was the first one to up short and black away before.
32:56And that'll be four two.
32:57Lovely one.
32:59You see the speed coming from the timing that its strength he has in the right hand.
33:08It is a bit dark but, uh,
33:11I must admit Alan Lamb didn't look to be in too much trouble that last over.
33:15And now with similar score,
33:16he'll be a good bit slower than
33:19Malcolm Marshall.
33:20He used to go up that, uh,
33:22we can keep going for a few hours to see if this dark cloud passes over.
33:41Two runs to lay.
33:45Two runs to lay.
33:47The bridge is now going to turn to spin.
33:50with Carl Hooper going to ball a few offspers
33:55and he doesn't want to go off the light either
34:01Oh, he's balled in
34:05It's a bit low, but Alan Lamb trying to wicket to wicket
34:09So often it happens, you know what the worst end is
34:11when the heat of the pass bowling is removed
34:15suddenly batsmen take chances with Carl Hooper
34:18and he gets them out
34:25Well, it did kick a little bit low
34:27didn't bounce as high as he's coming on it
34:29Filled away about half way up
34:31but you could see there where the bat was going
34:34Right hand took complete control
34:36tried to hit it through mid-wicket
34:40Well, a bit of pressure on this young man, Neil Fairbrother
34:43He's so well in counter cricket
34:45and in Wunder cricket in particular
34:47he's probably about the fastest scorer in the country
34:48He scores at a tremendous rate
34:51and the test matches he's played
34:52he's looked over awed by the situation
34:55The world doesn't need to make a breakthrough
34:57if he's going to in this Wunder series
35:10And so Fairbrother is a way that later cut for three runs
35:20Light not too good again at the moment
35:22the empires have had another little look
35:23but let's hope they can keep going
35:29And he's got him
35:30Yes, he was going for the cut again there
35:32Fairbrother and
35:33probably a little bit of bottom edge
35:36and it's slightly quicker ball there
35:38and well that really has worked out well for good
35:41which is two wickets and seven balls for Carl Hooper
35:46Once again, Neil Fairbrother
35:49disappointing his army of funds
35:51he gets so many runs in country cricket
35:53yet he just can't make this break for him
35:58and that brings out Ian Boat
36:024.45 when England won the toss for Quick West Indies Inn
36:07now he comes out
36:09not exactly at the moment of crisis
36:12but 87.4
36:15isn't precisely what England would have wanted
36:18nearly 174 to win
36:21here
36:21and
36:47a chance of three there
36:51or
36:51Rod Maven beat Kedley Ambrose into the rope
36:56That was a good pick edge
37:14Just a matter of an inch or so in front of it
37:20He didn't feel to Richie Richardson
37:27Yes, it's pure shot this, he sort of pokes at it, tries to force it, it jumps up a bit
37:32It's a great attempt to make a catch out of what was a ball that wasn't going to carry to
37:36Richie Richardson
37:39And where you had Simmons, you now have Kedley Ambrose
37:46That was a good Yorker but called no ball by Moe's Kitchen
37:51That was a devastating Yorker, Kedley Ambrose
37:57One more ball was boiled and then alas, off they went for bad light
38:01That was a fine performance indeed by Michael Atherton, patiently defensive but he began to pick up runs along the
38:07way
38:07And well, Ian Botham, it's all set for him
38:1298 for 4, 27 overs, plenty to be done by England if they're to win this first match
38:20Good fast bowling as ever from the West Indies
38:22Ambrose, 6 overs, 1 maiden, 1 for 18
38:24Malcolm Marshall, he's 1 wicket for 17, off 6
38:28And of course the man who nipped him with the wickets, Karl Hooper, 2 overs, no maidens, 2 for 12
38:36So that's the situation, England needs 76 more runs to win, bad lights start playing for the day
38:42Now we do have a weather forecast for tomorrow morning, cloudy they say at the start but brightening later
38:49And we'll be back, our coverage starting here tomorrow at 10.35 in the morning at Edgbaston
38:54Hope you'll join us then, for the moment it's goodnight from Edgbaston
38:58On the day that Ian Botham came back
