This is the Met Office UK Weather forecast for the weekend 21/05/2026. As high pressure builds this weekend the weather will turn sunny and dry for much of the UK. Heatwave conditions are likely to be met across southern and central areas, and the hot and sunny weather is likely to challenge the May records for maximum and minimum temperature early next week. Bringing you this weekend’s weather forecast is Annie Shuttleworth.

00:00It's not often the hot and sunny weather coincides with bank holiday weekends but this weekend
00:06is likely to set some new records for this time of year as high pressure moves in. The heat will
00:12build through this weekend and by Monday temperatures of 33 degrees are expected in
00:19southern and central areas of the UK. Now that high pressure builds in throughout Friday. There
00:25are still a few weather fronts out to the west bringing some spells of wetter weather up to
00:29the north and west. It's going to be a little bit cloudier and cooler across more
00:34northwestern areas with the peak of the heat across more southeastern areas as
00:39well as central England. So that means plenty of sunshine here through Saturday.
00:43Eastern areas of the UK up towards eastern Scotland as well seeing plenty of
00:46sunshine through the day. We could see a few showers across southeastern areas just
00:51for a time. They'll be relatively light and the rain across the northwest will tend
00:55to fade away but there will still be a light layer of cloud through much of the
00:59day. So as a result it's going to feel a little bit cooler compared to elsewhere
01:04in the UK across the far northwest temperatures in the high teens here into
01:08parts of Northern Ireland as well. But as we look further south temperatures climb
01:11well above 20 degrees. In fact temperatures reach 30 degrees on Saturday across the far
01:18southeast of England but extensive high 20 degrees across central and southern
01:24areas of England as well. So it's going to feel very hot in the sunshine. It's worth noting though the
01:29sea temperatures are still pretty cool at this time of year. So if you're planning on heading to
01:34the beach be aware that the sea is not particularly warm and it will feel
01:38slightly fresher particularly across the coast in the southeast temperatures just
01:43close to 20 degrees rather than that 30. So a big difference at the coast. High
01:49pressure dominates still through Saturday evening into Sunday. There's still a
01:53weather front up to the north and west bringing a vague area of cloud to these
01:58areas. So again a cooler start to the day across the far northwest. Some rain coming
02:03and going. It doesn't look particularly heavy but it's going to be quite a
02:06different feel up here compared to elsewhere in the country. But that may be a
02:11relief for those not looking forward to the heat. Widely very sunny across parts of
02:17Wales, England, southern areas of Scotland too. And it will brighten up actually as the day
02:22goes on across parts of Northern Ireland, more central and eastern areas of Scotland too. And the heat's gonna build
02:28even more on Sunday. Temperatures likely to hit 32 degrees across the southeast into the
02:3430s across parts of eastern England, East Anglia, seeing the peak of the heat through
02:40Sunday. As we head into parts of Wales, the south coast, the high 20s quite widely. And the
02:46low 20s to mid 20s across parts of northern England, southern Scotland into Northern Ireland as well. So a very
02:53hot day indeed, particularly for the time of year. Now the record for this time of year for May is
03:0032.8
03:01degrees. As we head into Monday, it looks like we will rival that record. As high pressure continues to
03:09build, the heat swirling around, building further and further across more southern areas. But it does look
03:16like that high pressure becomes more dominant more widely into Monday. So I think for those northwestern areas
03:21that will have escaped the heat through the early part of the weekend, it's likely to be a pretty hot
03:26and sunny day for these areas too on Monday. We've got southerly winds. They're relatively light. We could
03:33see a sea breeze developing. So still cool at the coast and cold in the sea. So don't jump in
03:39too quickly.
03:40Make sure you follow the local advice. Plenty of strong sunshine. UV levels will be high as well as pollen
03:47levels being very high this weekend as well. But plenty of sunshine out there to enjoy some outdoor
03:52activities throughout this bank holiday weekend. Now it's Monday where we're likely to see temperatures
03:58of 33 degrees, possibly a touch higher across more southern and eastern areas. But 30 degrees is likely
04:04across more northeastern areas of England, perhaps into the Midlands as well. The south coast of Wales,
04:10seeing temperatures quite close to 30 degrees too. It's quite unusual to see 30 degrees at this time
04:17of year, particularly on numerous days throughout the month of May. So this is a particularly exceptional
04:24spell of heat. We're likely to meet heat wave threshold temperatures throughout this weekend. And
04:29the heat is set to continue into the start of next week, possibly by the latter part of next week.
04:35temperatures will start to ever weigh closer to the 20s. But it's expected to remain pretty dry
04:40through the next seven days or so. Thank you so much for joining me. Make sure you stay up to
04:44date
04:44throughout this bank holiday weekend. You can do that by subscribing to our YouTube channel.
04:48Have a good one. Bye bye.
