00:31Hey, guys. It's me, Yaya Diamond. What's up, peoples? Yo, I have a special guest on the show
00:36today. Yes, you have guessed it. It is the American Idol 2025 winner. Jamal Roberts is
00:43on the show. I heard that this man can sing one, two, three, A, B, C, and swoon you. I
00:50don't know. I don't know. I heard it. I heard it. And so I know it's for a fact. I
00:55heard
00:55his new song, Perfect for Me, and I'm absolutely loving it. And I want to welcome him to the
01:00show. Jamal, thank you so much for joining us. Thank you. Thank you for having me. Oh,
01:05man. Thank you. Now, okay. Getting on American Idol, auditioning, going through the whole process.
01:11You did the whole thing, right? You went through the whole thing. And now you are the winner.
01:20What is this like for you?
01:24It's a dream come true. I never thought, you know, I'd be in this position. I always
01:29wanted to be just, you know, a singer, you know, singing is my passion is what I love
01:34to do. Never thought that it'd be, you know, my everyday thing, something that I love, something
01:41that I'm good at, you know, it just, it's my life now. Singing is my life.
01:46Yeah. And American Idol was, was such a challenge, uh, vocally or part of being an artist. I mean,
01:56it challenged you in every way that it could possibly, but it was doing it to get you prepared,
02:00uh, for the weird, for the real world. And, uh, they did a tremendous job on that.
02:06That's amazing. That is amazing. I'm absolutely so happy for you. And I'm happy that we were able
02:11to do this. You know, uh, you went from a PE teacher in Mississippi to an American Isola
02:18champion. Do you miss PE? I love PE. I'm sorry. I lived for PE at school. Do you miss that?
02:28Oh, I go back all the time. Oh, especially when I'm home on free time. I'm always stopping by
02:32out of school, uh, checking on everybody, checking on everything. Oh, sweet. Sweet. And you completed
02:39BET's, uh, was that Sunday best and finished in the top three. Um, did that prepare you for this?
02:46Oh, Sunday best was a whole different bracket. Uh, it was, it was one genre. It wasn't very
02:53challenging. I would say as this, uh, cause I mean, gospel is gospel. There ain't no way around it.
02:58Uh, but when you have to be versatile and saying any genre of music on the show, you know, the
03:03show,
03:03you can do it. Uh, some of this, it, it paid the way definitely. But, uh, I would say those
03:12in between times between Sunday best and American idol, those different shows, those little small
03:16gigs I used to do. I think those prepared me for the artist I am now. That is so cool.
03:21And you do
03:22have a beautiful website by the way, and you have your song out called perfect for me. And I don't
03:26want
03:26to keep your, your, you know, keep you too much, but what is it like to, did you write this
03:31song?
03:31Tell me about the song. Perfect for me. I had notes in my phone. Uh, sometimes I just hear
03:38something and I just put it in my notes and I don't go back to it cause I don't be
03:41thinking
03:42nothing much of it, but I was in Nashville. I'll never forget it. And the guy, um, the, uh, uh,
03:48everybody that was in there, they just was like, listen to the tracks you got. I was like, okay,
03:52play the track. So they played me a blank track. There was no beat to it at first. No, nothing.
03:56It was just a slow, smooth, you know, just admit it. And I'm listening to it. And I think
04:04it's like, I came out with a perfect for me. That was at the top of my head. Uh, then
04:09I
04:09went back to my notes and I seen what I had on my phone and I just started to put
04:13it together.
04:13And before you knew it, that day, it was just like magic and came out with a whole song.
04:20It wasn't finished yet, but we got the concept of what it is and what it would be. Then we
04:25put
04:26a little this and put a little dad in there. It's just like cooking. You need a little
04:29of this and need a little that, uh, you know, to make the meal a meal. And, and I'm telling
04:34you, it was an amazing experience. And what's, what shocked me so bad is I wrote it. You know,
04:39you can do anything you want with the label. They can give you songs and they can do this
04:43and do that. But when you do a song that you wrote,
04:46that you can feel, I tell people all the time, I can sing anything. I say, but it's,
04:50there's a difference that when I can feel what I'm singing, you know, I can, I can relate
04:54to it, you know? So, uh, uh, that's why I consider myself a soul singer, you know, not
04:59a gospel singer, not an R&B singer, just a soul singer. Uh, but yeah, that, that, that
05:04they, uh, really, you know, let me pat myself on the back a little bit, you know? Uh, like
05:12man, you wrote that song. Uh, yeah, you wrote that. That is good. It's a wonderful feeling.
05:19It is definitely a wonderful feeling and songwriting is beautiful. It, it completes the whole thing.
05:24It's like, you have the whole complete a hundred percent process and it's just wonderful. I know
05:29how you feel. I know how you feel. You have some tour dates now, New York still has
05:34some tickets, am I correct? And Boston and Nashville, but Atlanta and Chicago are sold
05:39out. I think, I think, uh, St. Louis, Chicago, Atlanta, and Nashville are sold out as of now.
05:47And I think only thing left is New York and a little bit of Boston. Oh goodness. Jamal,
05:52how does that make you feel, man? Come on. It's amazing. Um, I have some, I have some
06:01amazing fans. Uh, and I mean, they're going to show up every time, every time.
06:08That's wonderful, man. I am so proud. I'm just so happy to have you on the show and to
06:13be even a little tiny, small part of your life as you go on your journey. Don't forget
06:17about us little people down here. Never, never. I was out walking. I just left my high school.
06:23I was like, man, you walking around like that? I said, man, it's home. So what are you saying?
06:27That's the same. It's the same place where I live. I said, it's the same me, you know,
06:31all the day. I got a little more, you know, accolades behind my name now, but other than
06:35that, it's still me. I hear you. I hear you. So, okay. Okay. I have to ask you, and there's
06:42some fans that, that are, you know, they sent some questions in because I said, you know,
06:47behind the scenes, not in the front of everybody. Cause I, you know, I got to keep it down and
06:51down low until I actually have you. And I'm so happy. So a couple of fans have asked, you
06:57know, what, okay. One question. Number one, what was, uh, what is one fun or surprising thing
07:03about you that most people don't know?
07:10Uh, all honesty. Uh, I'm just like, I'm a person that likes to have fun. Most people
07:21would call me a nut. They say I'm a complete, you know, fool, but I mean, that just, it's
07:27my character and it just, it's my personality for real. I just, I like to have fun. I'm always
07:31smiling, having fun. You catch me not smiling, having fun. And you need to just, you know,
07:35look at yourself. Cause it's, it's, it's rare, uh, when I'm not smiling and, uh, just having
07:40a good time. So, you know, people see me on, on internet, they'll be like, Oh no, he's
07:44serious. He don't play. I'm like, yeah, I do. I play a lot.
07:47I don't know. Okay. So Jamal, you have to, this is my question. Do you like roller coasters?
07:53I do not.
07:54No, come on, man.
07:56No.
07:57You said you like to have fun. Roller coasters is the ultimate, I mean, like thrill.
08:02I pass out every time I'm on a roller coaster. I haven't been on the roller coasters since
08:08elementary school.
08:09No way, Jamal. No way. I'm a roller coaster fanatic. Like if I'm going to go somewhere,
08:15I'm, I'm in Orlando, I'm on the rides. I'm in Tampa on the rides. I'm in Texas on another
08:23ride. I'm in Georgia. I am on the roller coasters and I do higher and the more the fall,
08:28all the better. Oh yeah. Oh yeah. That's me. When I go back to London, when I go back
08:36to London, I'm definitely going to the roller coasters and I have to go to the indoor roller
08:40coaster park in New Jersey. I have to have to. Oh yeah. Oh yeah. That's me.
08:45Now, see, I think mine was ruined. I was on some, some rides that get, take you up in the
08:50ass, spin you around and all that. I'm not, I don't do that. So roller coasters up and down,
08:56down, up and down. Yeah, no, I'm in a, I'm no, I don't do the swing thing. We don't do
09:02the swing thing. I don't do the fall thing or the swing thing. No.
09:07Oh shoot just straight up in the air. The shoot thing. We don't do that either. We, no,
09:11nah, no, I might do a roller coaster every now and then. There you go. There you go. Yeah.
09:16Yeah. Roller coasters are a little bit more on my speed. Now the shooting thing and the
09:21dropping and the, no. Yeah. They can have all that. No, no. I think I went on the shooting
09:27thing one time in Orlando and I spent 20 minutes holding up to the pole outside of the ride.
09:34I was like, don't move me. I don't like it. I pass out. I pass out every time up there
09:41in
09:42the air. Oh my gosh. Wow. Finally, there's one more fan question. If you could jam with any
09:48musician from any era, living or past, who would it be and why?
09:54Musician? Mm-hmm. Not a singer, musician, anybody. Okay. Uh, in the past.
10:02Now or living or past?
10:06Well, I'm already working with Stevie Wonder. So. Sweetness.
10:10That scratches that off the list. Uh.
10:13Uh. I will go back. I probably want to do something with the Temptations. Oh, sweet.
10:21You know, you know, they are a bunch of cool. Well, they were. I know one guy that I did
10:27the Motown show with for five years. I did that show for five years for Motown. It was
10:33wonderful. And I was able to work with Glenn Leonard. So great people. I mean, great people.
10:39Definitely. Definitely. Somebody you can. I mean, you would, you would hit it off with
10:43Glenn. He's a sweetheart. Yeah. He's a sweetheart. You would love him. Tell him Yaya. Tell him
10:47say, Hey, Yaya said hi. Great person. Oh my gosh. So Jamal, man, tell me, okay, you got
10:56the new song out. Perfect for me. What's next for you?
11:02Uh, we release some music. Uh, we're actually putting out an album this year. Uh, we got a,
11:06we got a, we got another single dropping in June, literally next month. And then we're
11:11dropping an album. I want to say, uh, September, end of September, early October.
11:19Nice. Nice. Well, Jamal, thank you so much for being here. You know, and, and the blessing
11:25is on my end. Definitely, definitely, definitely.
11:28Thank you for having me. Thank you so much.
11:30Oh, thank you. Thank you. And thank you guys so much for tuning in. Don't forget to check
11:34out the tour. I mean, there's only a few tickets left, but if he, I'm sure he's going
11:38to be going again and he's got new music coming out and all kinds of stuff. Just hang in there
11:42guys. You'll get tickets, but the most thing, and the best thing that you can do is purchase,
11:49purchase, not just stream. Okay. Cause 0.006 cents is just not enough. Uh, purchase the song
11:57so that we can be a support to Jamal and to his family. I want to thank you. Thank you.
12:03And thank
12:03you guys so much for tuning in. Don't forget to dare to be different. And until the next
12:07time that we meet guys, bye. Bye Jamal. Thank you. Bye. Bye. Thank you. Bye.
12:14Bye. Thank you for watching.
