00:32so i can smell the odor of alcohol yeah if this man is operating under the influence he will be
00:37going to jail nevada a land of extremes from the strip to the summits it's wild country home to
00:49more than 900 species and a way of life worth protecting preserved for the people and the
00:56wildlife they call it home one team stands guard this is nevada wild
01:24my name is james mortimer i'm a game warden with the nevada department of wildlife i'm in the
01:29western region here in washoe county within that is reno and sparks about 400 000 population and
01:37above i was born and raised here in the reno area it's where i was fishing and hunting for most
01:43of
01:43my life so it's fun to be able to be in areas that i know a lot of those outdoorsmen
01:48are recreating
01:49i'm heading up to lake tahoe and we'll be patrolling by boat we're going to meet up with
01:55game warden britney rider and look for any reckless operators operating under the influence
02:01or any other violations regarding watercraft or vessels britney rider patrols lake tahoe
02:07specifically and then assist any other wardens with patrol during hunting season
02:22brady how are we now good all right well let's get after it then
02:27any big troubles with the uh paddleboarders at all so there's some paddleboarders over at the point
02:32that the lifeguards see without a life jacket and some of them might be kids okay
02:55he's not even noticing us he's just paying attention to his phone
02:59hello state game warden how you doing hey the reason i'm coming up is i don't see a life jacket
03:04on board is that an inflatable life jacket or no no okay so nevada law says you need to have
03:09a
03:09life jacket on board it doesn't need to be warm but it needs to be on the board okay you
03:13know how far
03:14out from the shore you are here probably about a quarter mile half mile right uh do me a favor
03:18just
03:18come up to my boat for me okay thank you where are you from ukraine yeah okay you're here on
03:28uh
03:28work visa or something like that yeah i understand coming from ukraine you might not know all our
03:33laws and violations and everything like that you need to have a live jacket on board okay
03:37right jack so you don't need to wear it but it needs to be on board okay uh-huh
03:42we have a lot of issues out here with people they think that they can swim to shore but when
03:46it's in
03:46cold water like this their muscles start to lock up they can't swim as good and they drown it happens
03:51more than you think now that you're on our boat do me a favor throw that on for me thank
03:56you so
03:57nice yeah what's your first name make hello it's a work visa after war started in ukraine okay me and
04:06my son yeah comes to america okay have a work yeah it is difficult to learn the laws and regulations
04:14when you move from ukraine i'll use it as an educational opportunity um and tell them about the laws here
04:19in
04:19state of nevada if you're going to come back you have to get a live jacket okay thank you okay
04:23i'm
04:24understanding okay thank you very much best of luck to work and everything like that huh thank you yeah
04:29have a good day yeah you as well 23
04:49stay game warden how are we doing good the reason for the stop is you don't have an observer on
04:53board
04:53okay um so while you're towing any two behind you you need to have an observer on board which means
04:59you're operating paying full attention to what you're doing while driving and then you have to
05:03have another person on board watching the kids and having a flag ready okay can you just get the kids
05:08on board for me real quick uh do you have that registration available in the house do you have a
05:21driver's license here in nevada yeah how long you been on the water like eight in the morning okay
05:26without looking at your watch do you know what time it is right now yeah no without looking at
05:30your watch three o'clock three o'clock i'm not drinking i don't drink okay okay well the reason
05:34why i'm asking is that there's yeah that was for the other empty beer cans and everything like
05:38that okay so i can smell the odor alcohol my name is victor jordan i'm a game warden with the
05:54nevada
05:54department of wildlife based out of las vegas i was born here i do have a family member who works
06:00for the department my sister britney works out of reno area and patrols out on lake tahoe
06:07i got the job a few years later she asked me about it was very intrigued by it and says
06:12hey
06:12i think that's something that i'd like to do i said well come on let's go let's do it and
06:16uh she
06:17tested for us and nobody ever knew that she was my sister and she got the job on her own
06:22and when
06:23everybody found out that she was my sister they were all kind of upset with us that we never told
06:27them today i'm going to be going to a local meat processor basically we have one professional meat
06:34processor in all of las vegas so anytime anyone in the las vegas area harvests an animal and they
06:40want it professionally processed they bring it to this local processor we'll kind of go over there
06:45and make sure that everybody's animals are tagged and punched correctly
06:54how's it going guys good just gonna be checking some tags in here you got many carcasses in uh yeah
07:00we got probably about 20 yesterday yeah and maybe four already today yeah and eight on saturday yeah
07:07yeah right on yeah good good cool thanks man so here i'm checking tags see if it's punched make
07:17sure that the dates kind of correspond this guy here harvested on august 21st he clearly notched it out
07:24he wrote in the unit 222 and sometimes we'll just look at the carcass and make sure that they brought
07:30in a proper amount of meat for that animal if you're only seeing two quarters or a small bag kind
07:36of
07:36wonder where the rest of the meat went so here you can see on this tag he's got a antelope
07:42horns longer
07:43and what did he do he circled the month he circled the date he circled that it was a male
07:49so this is
07:49a violation in the instructions it says immediately upon reaching the harvested animal number one clearly
07:56notched the month and day of kill marking the blocks with a pencil is not acceptable and not as bold
08:04so he used a pen pencil here it clearly says it right on the tag so that's a violation sometimes
08:10if they use pen and they do it light you can just rub the tag a few times with your
08:14thumb and rub off
08:15the date hopefully when they get the meat back from the processor they look at their tag they look at
08:20it
08:20and say hey i can rub that off i'm gonna go harvest another animal this guy did it pretty bold
08:25but at some
08:27point and he didn't follow the laws of the state of nevada we pay him a visit and find out
08:32what he was
08:33thinking now the whole reason why we check tags make sure that people are obeying by the law your
08:38resource would be diminished immediately so here's one that we really hate to see this is a mule deer
08:44that's not punched and i'm not seeing even a slice the problem is this is a junior so it looks
08:50like it was
08:51a girl who shot it i'm sure with her dad and uh she didn't punch it so whoever's taking her
08:57and
08:58and teaching her how to hunt is not teaching her the proper method so we always hate to deal with
09:05crimes with minors but they need to be shown the right way and we want to keep the next generation
09:10continuing to hunt and when you have a minor who committed a crime sometimes it's not fun to deal with
09:17that i just gotta take some notes real quick and find out who they are and go pay him a
09:21visit
09:27so i can smell the odor of alcohol yeah um i don't know if it's coming from the empty cans
09:31or not
09:32okay um would you be willing to um submit to testing okay if you can keep your life jacket on
09:37board and then just come up to the front of my boat right here i can smell the odor of
09:42alcohol
09:42um coming from the vessel um and possibly the operator and this could be very dangerous he's
09:48got three children on board with no operator and it could be very easy that one of these kids go
09:52overboard and he's not attentive enough to know that they've fallen overboard so when's the last time you
09:57had a drink i have maybe a couple sips one beer like in the morning okay so like i said
10:04um i can smell
10:05the odor of alcohol coming out of the boat um if it's just the um empty beer cans that's messing
10:09me up
10:10um i'll be able to just tell tell with this one test it's just a horizontal gaze nystagmus so follow
10:15the stimulus which is the tip of my finger with your eyes and your eyes only keep your head still
10:18okay
10:28this isn't something that we can use officer discretion if this man is operating under the
10:32influence and is above the legal limit um there is no discretion here he will be going to jail today
10:49if this man is operating under the influence and is above the legal limit
10:53you will be going to jail today all right just keep following the stimulus with your eyes okay
11:05all right you can relax man if you had alcohol above the legal limit usually what your eyes are
11:09do are going to do is going to bounce okay i'm not seeing anything like that in your eyes today
11:13um i'm
11:14not going to continue forward with the operating under the influence investigation you're all good
11:17to go what i am going to do i am going to issue you a citation today um for um
11:21not having an operator
11:22on board um while you're towing a vessel okay just give us a second so if you jump back on
11:27the vessel
11:27you're good to go i'll be issuing a citation for operating without an observer the fine does carry
11:34195 dollars and it is a misdemeanor violation here in the state of nevada i do need a signature from
11:39you it's not a mission of guilt just saying that you'll take care of it i do have to warn
11:43you fail to
11:44take care of it we'll go to warrant all right you have any questions for us okay thank you for
11:49staying sober and uh making sure everybody can operate out here okay enjoy your summer i'll see
11:54you later guys i'm glad he's operating safe and he's out here but he just needs to make sure he's
12:02got some sort of observer behind him hopefully he's learned his lesson yeah
12:13so just leaving the meat processor and found a tag not properly punched so we're going to go over and
12:19investigate find out his story and determine whether it needs to be a citation
12:40he's about to eat right now hey how are you hey how are you available that's you hey i'm victor
12:45jordan
12:45game warden nevada department of wildlife no i'm good right here yeah so uh here to ask you a few
12:51questions about your hunt okay so uh how did it go went good went good 25 i have a successful
12:57first
12:58thing saturday morning worried about the heat got into the side by side put the tag on it took it
13:02all
13:02All the way back to camp, got in the shade, and got it, quartered it.
13:06The reason why I'm here is because I've looked at your history.
13:09You've been hunting for a while.
13:10Okay.
13:10And you're expected to know what to do with the tag, right?
13:14Supposed to punch the tag?
13:15Well, I did.
13:16I squared out 22.
13:17I wrote in 251.
13:19Yeah.
13:19And I wrote August.
13:21Did you read what the tag said?
13:22No.
13:23It's right on the tag about notching it.
13:25Clearly notch it.
13:26With a knife?
13:27Yeah.
13:28Oh, I thought it was, see, even my buddy who, he's the hunter along with me,
13:31it was, we, he even said it when I squirted it out with a pen.
13:35Yeah.
13:35That if you didn't have a pen, then you were supposed to notch it.
13:38But I just squirted it.
13:39No, it doesn't say that.
13:39It says to clearly notch it, and it says do not use a pen, and it's bolded.
13:43Do not.
13:44Okay.
13:45So that's why I'm here.
13:45Okay.
13:46I did.
13:46Okay?
13:47So it looks like you did everything else right.
13:49Okay.
13:50And the reason why we have an issue with that is because you took it to malls,
13:54you get it processed, you get all your meat back, you get your tag,
13:57you wipe off the ink, and you're back up and, and, and hunting again for,
14:01for another antelope.
14:03I understand that.
14:04Yeah.
14:04It's a, it's an education, but also, unfortunately, it comes with a citation.
14:07Okay.
14:08So, all right.
14:08Do you have your ID on you?
14:09Yep, I'm going to grab it.
14:10Okay.
14:10Thanks.
14:11The tag does specifically state that you shall not use ink or pencil,
14:16and clearly he has.
14:18So it is a violation.
14:19He will be receiving a citation today.
14:21This is your ID bag.
14:22Okay.
14:22Okay.
14:23Total bail amount, 195.
14:24Additionally to the fine, there's a six demerit.
14:27Do you know about the demerit system?
14:28No, sir.
14:28If you get 12 within five years, you could have your hunting and fishing privileges revoked.
14:33No.
14:34Okay.
14:34You're at six.
14:35Okay.
14:36For, for that.
14:37Yep.
14:37Yeah.
14:37Up with it.
14:38Yep.
14:38That's great.
14:39So.
14:39Until you gave me those examples, I never even thought about any of that.
14:43Yeah.
14:43To do any of that.
14:44And, and most sportsmen don't, but it's the ones that do think about those kind of things
14:48and do do those things that ruin it for everybody else.
14:51And that, that therefore we have to put those laws in place.
14:54What I need from you is a signature on the bottom.
14:56It's just saying that you will take care of it.
14:59All right.
14:59Thanks.
15:00You as well.
15:02So although this individual was a bit agitated, I feel that just a simple education is not enough
15:08and a citation would be a little more prudent.
15:26My name is Aliyah Lair.
15:28I'm a game warden for the Department of Wildlife in the state of Nevada.
15:31And I patrol Southern Nevada, which encompasses a lot of Clark County.
15:35So it's super busy on Lake Mead today, really nice weather.
15:40It's about 90 degrees, lots of jet skis out today.
15:43So I'm going to patrol the lake, make sure they're behaving.
15:46Today, I'm specifically looking out for jet skis.
15:50So making sure they have their equipment, life jacket is most important thing, and then
15:54fire extinguisher as well.
15:56But also making sure that they're obeying the wake zones, because that's a huge problem
16:01with how many people are here.
16:22Are you able to step on that side and flip it?
16:30So on the back, it tells you which side you can step on to flip it this way.
16:36There was a bit of a language barrier that I noticed.
16:40So I'm communicating with them, hey, look at that sticker.
16:44There's a proper side that you can spin it on.
16:46Use your feet.
17:03So I'm on my way to a junior hunter, basically a minor, who failed to punch her tag.
17:11Being a minor, it is a misdemeanor crime.
17:15So having to have a misdemeanor on your record, having to go to juvenile court, having to take
17:23your parents with you to court, all of that comes into play, whether a citation would be
17:28warranted or simply a warning and an explanation of what the law actually requires them to do.
17:36Just providing that education.
17:43State police.
17:48Hi, how are you?
17:49Is that here?
17:50Is she here?
17:51What?
17:53Because I have some questions for her.
17:54How about, is he here?
17:56He's at work?
17:57Okay.
17:59She's right here?
18:00Okay.
18:01All right.
18:02Hi, how are you?
18:02Good, how are you?
18:03Good, I have some questions for you.
18:05I'm state game warden for Nevada, and I saw that you harvested an animal, and I just wanted
18:09to ask you about your hunt.
18:14Okay.
18:15How did that go?
18:16So where did you get your deer?
18:17When was it?
18:19Well, we got it on the 22nd.
18:22This month.
18:23Okay.
18:24And I saw it with some other deer.
18:28Uh-huh.
18:29Kind of off of a dirt road, and I shouted up to Nouveau.
18:32Okay.
18:33And then we dropped it off of the butchers after we gutted it.
18:38Okay.
18:39All right, so there are some issues, but you're not in trouble.
18:42This is an education, and then this is going to be an education for dad.
18:45I'd really like to talk to him.
18:47Is he the one who took you, or did, is this mom?
18:49Yeah.
18:50Who's the one who's out with you out in the field?
18:53Dad.
18:53Okay.
18:54And then you dropped it off at the meat processor?
18:56Yeah.
18:58So who carried your tag when you were hunting?
19:00It was just my dad.
19:01So how come your dad was carrying it and not you?
19:04Oh, my dad.
19:06Do you have any help?
19:06Oh, is that dad?
19:08Yes.
19:08Yeah.
19:08Perfect.
19:09All right.
19:10The tail was in the backpack, so I'm responsible for her, so yes, I technically would have been
19:16responsible for her.
19:17Yes, sir.
19:18When you shot the deer, did the deer take off running?
19:22Yeah, he didn't go through.
19:24You can chime in anytime, dad.
19:26Anytime.
19:26I'm trying to understand what, I mean, okay, the tag thing was wrong, maybe.
19:32I, I, I, I, as far as I, I can see, I'm, I, you don't know.
19:36I was just trying to be responsible.
19:37Fair enough.
19:38I had it so it didn't get lost.
19:40Fair enough.
19:41So this is...
19:42We notched it.
19:43We, we did everything we were supposed to do.
19:45Yeah.
19:46So what did we do wrong?
19:47So...
19:47Stopping by, so you want to talk to us or before I sit there and say, hey, you know, take
19:53us
19:53to jail, I'd like to find out what I'm being charged with or why I'm guilty.
19:59You held the tag.
20:00What does the tag say on it that you must do?
20:03It's for...
20:03Once you arrive to the animal, what does the tag say that you must do?
20:07You notched it out.
20:08Correct.
20:08And right in the area that it was shot.
20:10How do I know that that deer was shot in its correct location?
20:14What day was it shot on?
20:15She told me on the 22nd.
20:18Okay.
20:18How would, how would I know that looking at the tag?
20:21Um, because it's, oh, you know what?
20:23Yes.
20:24Right?
20:25We're, we're tracking now?
20:27Let me, let me, okay, now I got you.
20:29Let me step back then and I'll explain all that to you.
20:32Yeah, sure.
20:33So we actually pulled off the wrong tag.
20:36The tag that we pulled off and notched, um, was, we're, we're going hunting in another
20:42three weeks.
20:43For an antelope?
20:44The antelope.
20:45Yep.
20:46I, I notched the wrong tag.
20:48Okay, so.
20:49So, so, yes, you can, wherever I have the other tag in the house, but you can see the other
20:55tag is already notched out.
20:56Okay.
20:57I just, I just grabbed the wrong tag.
20:59Okay.
21:00Because I know that's one thing, absolutely, I don't accept the question.
21:04You have to have the tag all the time.
21:06Right.
21:07Actually, I was going to call you guys up and, and ask you, because I mean, the, the
21:10tag, the, the tag I have now is, is notched out.
21:14So I need to find out what to do to do with that tag.
21:17Okay, well, to be honest with you, I do not know.
21:19I'll get you an answer by the end of the day.
21:21If I don't get an answer and I'm still waiting, I'll call you by the end of the day and
21:26tell
21:26you that I don't have an answer yet.
21:28Okay.
21:29All right.
21:29All right.
21:30Thank you so much guys.
21:31Have a nice day.
21:32All right.
21:32You too.
21:32Thanks.
21:34So after leaving these two individuals, determined to provide an education for a minor and a site
21:41for the individual, providing education, letting people understand why it's important to punch
21:47your tag and let them know that we're out here and we're watching.
21:59So it's super busy on Lake Mead today.
22:03Lots of jet skis out today.
22:04So I'm going to patrol the lake, make sure they're behaving.
22:12Are you able to step on that side and flip it?
22:17There was a bit of a language barrier that I noticed.
22:22So I'm communicating with them.
22:23Hey, look at that sticker.
22:25There's a proper side that you can spin it on.
22:27Use your feet.
22:36There we go.
22:37There we go.
22:39There we go.
22:42Before it came to work.
22:44There we go.
22:57I know what's going on there, ain't I?
23:05Hey.
23:26So we got a little bit of smoke,
23:28which sometimes after a flip can happen.
23:31So it looks like the jet ski is good.
23:33They're taking it slow because they're nervous to flip again.
23:37Both of them had on life jackets, which is a huge thing
23:40because a lot of people even with life jackets will panic
23:42because it's a shock of cold.
23:45Even though it's 80 degrees in the water,
23:47it's way colder than what it is outside.
23:49And also you hit the water pretty hard
23:51when you come off the jet ski.
23:52So if they weren't wearing their life jackets,
23:54that would have turned into a rescue
23:56instead of an actual vessel assist.
23:58So that's one of the reasons why we preach
24:00having safety equipment with you
24:02and on you at all times
24:04and make sure that it's actually functional.
24:06I'll be clear of that vessel assist.
24:08Ocean Nora, 10-8.
24:32My name is Joe Barnes.
24:33I'm the staff specialist, statewide specialist,
24:36for the Wildlife Diversity Division,
24:38which just means I juggle
24:39a lot of grants.
24:40But on a personal level, my specialty has always been
24:44for the past 17 or so years,
24:46I've been able to focus on birds of prey,
24:50peregrine falcons, golden eagles,
24:52a lot of cliff-nesting raptors.
24:56Hey, hey.
24:58How long have you been here?
25:0015 minutes.
25:01Oh, that's not too bad.
25:02Well, Mariah is another wildlife biologist
25:05with the department.
25:06So we're going to band some raptors,
25:08specifically a little-known hawk species
25:10is the phrygianus hawk.
25:12She's coming out today to help me
25:14kind of keep the nestlings in check,
25:16corral them, restrain them once we get them in hand.
25:18We'll go up, check a couple sites,
25:21and then get an age.
25:23Hopefully there are some nestlings doing the blood
25:25and getting transmitters.
25:27We're going to try to track their movements
25:28and try to see how they use the landscape
25:30and what particular factors of the environment
25:33are most critical for the species.
25:35Okay, cool.
25:36All right.
25:38These are solar-powered satellite transmitters.
25:42So, you know, once you get these transmitters out,
25:44it's a lot of hands-on work just to make it happen.
25:46But once they're out,
25:48I can sit there and download from my desk.
25:50I never once need to see or touch that bird again
25:53for the rest of its life.
25:55I just need to download data.
25:57So the data I get is GPS point every hour.
26:01I also get things like temperature.
26:03I get velocity, you know,
26:05to see if the bird's stopped in place
26:07or if it's moving, and also elevation.
26:10So I get usually meters above sea level.
26:14And so that way I can tell,
26:16is the bird using thermals getting up in the air?
26:19Is it perched?
26:19Is it on a tree?
26:20Is it on a ridge line?
26:22Things like that.
26:23Hey, Joe, do you see the adults?
26:25Up in the sky, to your left.
26:28Oh, no, I did not see that.
26:30Oh, I see, yeah.
26:35There's a nest, a really small tree,
26:37but it's literally, you know,
26:38150 yards out from the road.
26:40So my plan is to possibly put on a transmitter
26:43on at least one of its nestlings.
26:48So we only have the three transmitters.
26:50Maybe just put one here?
26:51That's what I'm kind of thinking.
26:52If we put one here,
26:53and then we for sure had nestlings at the next site.
26:57So one here, one there.
27:00Gear.
27:00Gear up.
27:03I've got capillary tubes.
27:05Yeah, needles.
27:06I think we got everything.
27:10Yeah, if they, if they start running, Joe,
27:12just drop the ladder.
27:13Yep.
27:13I'll get it.
27:15All right, here we go.
27:19This guy might be solo.
27:21Okay, uh.
27:22Oh.
27:23We're not getting that bird.
27:24Nope.
27:26That is its fledging flight, I would say.
27:33How's it going?
27:36Not too bad.
27:38Gonna fill up.
27:40Sweet.
27:46Hey, what's up?
27:48I guess somebody came in over flat wake speed.
27:51Which, at this point, there's nothing we can do.
27:53We have to witness it.
27:54Apparently, the waves made her, one of her lines
27:58on her dock break.
27:59Yeah, I'll, I'll head over with you.
28:01If it's just that line, there's not much that we can do.
28:05But, um, if there's, if there's damage, I'll, I'll handle it.
28:10Okay.
28:12So, right now, National Park Service just got a call in, um,
28:17from somebody right on the other side of this dock, um,
28:21for possible property damage.
28:22It sounds like another vessel came in over wake speed
28:26and possibly snapped one of their dock lines.
28:30So, we're gonna dock right now and then walk over and find them.
28:40I don't know if she's here.
28:46So, what it looks like is, this was a pretty old rope.
28:52So, whoever came in over a wake speed, uh,
28:55either this was kind of hanging out and they hit it,
28:58or the wake caused the boat to hit, uh,
29:01against these buoys up against the dock
29:03and it just tore through that nasty old rope.
29:11Your call has been forwarded to voicemail.
29:13The person you're trying to reach is not available.
29:16Hi, my name is Aaliyah Lair.
29:18I'm a game warden with the Department of Wildlife.
29:21Oh.
29:23How's it going?
29:25You're all good.
29:26Was this the, the dock line that was broken?
29:29Yep.
29:29And did they just come through and it, like,
29:32rocked you so hard that it snapped, or what did they do?
29:34I thought it broke the cleat off my back of my boat.
29:37It sounded like it broke the cleat, so I ran out here.
29:40And I saw the cleat was still there and I looked down
29:42and saw my rope was snapped right in half.
29:44The boats were going like this.
29:45My sliding glass doors were opening and closing.
29:47My cabinets were opening and closing.
29:48My pocket doors was opening and closing.
29:51Yeah.
29:51And I could barely get up to my feet to walk out
29:54because the boat was going like this so bad.
29:57Mm-hmm.
29:58It, it, it's worse than any kind of windstorm out here
30:00when we have all this wake out here.
30:02And people are not paying attention to the no wake zone.
30:04I know, I know.
30:05And there's no one out here ever watching this.
30:07I'm seeing two to four of the ranger boats
30:10sitting right over at the boat launch.
30:11And I'm like, the problem's over here.
30:13We're generally sitting over there,
30:15just because that's where a lot of traffic is.
30:16But now that we know that there's more of an issue over here.
30:18Yeah, we're going to be sitting over here.
30:20You're going to have a shootout.
30:21And it's not going to be me.
30:23It's going to be them because they're getting tired of us
30:25calling them out when they're breaking the rules here.
30:27We know who they are.
30:28We're getting pictures of them.
30:29Nothing is being done.
30:31Mm-hmm.
30:32Get the trash.
30:32Get the riff-raff out of here.
30:34All we can do is increase our effort
30:35Can you put a sign out there?
30:37Because obviously they don't know what no wake means.
30:39Maybe you need to put idle through the marina.
30:42Which is an issue,
30:42because they're supposed to be taking their boaters' education.
30:45Yeah.
30:45So we're cracking down on that, on wake zone.
30:49And then they should know what those buoys mean.
30:51Because if they go through the course,
30:52they're supposed to know what that is.
30:54They need to be getting tickets or something.
30:56But one of the rangers said,
30:59instead of using the megaphone, just start taking pictures.
31:02And just start sending them to you guys.
31:04And I'm like, okay, so now we're going to sit here and do your job.
31:07And then pretty soon you're seeing them all rolling in here, all hot.
31:10And they're all going to want to get in fast.
31:12And this is the bewitching hour.
31:21The rangers aren't usually out here patrolling unless they get called out.
31:24So now that we know we can start patrolling out here, we'll do that.
31:28We understand what you're saying.
31:28Yeah, but I'm paying for the damages.
31:30Yeah, I understand.
31:31They're not.
31:32If there is any damage over a certain price point,
31:34we can report that to the Coast Guard.
31:36If it's over $2,000, that's what we can do.
31:39If it's below that, there's a self-report form we can send to you.
31:42We're not saying there's not an issue.
31:44We'll start addressing it.
31:45We'll start coming over here and watching them.
31:48I'm out here at this time.
31:49So you'll see me out here now that I know.
31:52Because before the problem is we were getting people telling us on that other side.
31:56They were getting into fights because people were coming through the wake zone.
32:00I'm not going to strain my vocal cords that they're not going to hear me.
32:03So I got a megaphone.
32:04But they don't hear it.
32:05Yeah.
32:06Or they're hearing it.
32:07They're not honoring it.
32:08And they're thinking, you're crashing our party.
32:12Yeah.
32:13Karen, you know, like really?
32:15Well, look what you're doing to our boats.
32:18Yeah.
32:18And look what you're doing to our ropes.
32:20And what if we have children inside and they're standing on their feet and you knock them off their feet?
32:24Yeah.
32:25A little kid.
32:26Yeah.
32:27And we'll let our morning guys know, too, that they're coming out hot.
32:30And we'll be here for when they're coming in hot, too.
32:33We got our megaphone.
32:34So we're going to be out here.
32:36We'll take care of it.
32:39Okay, good.
32:40Yeah.
32:41Yeah.
32:41I hope you use your megaphone.
32:42Oh, yeah.
32:42Don't forget to say please and thank you.
32:44Yeah, exactly.
32:45It goes a long way.
32:45Yeah.
32:47Yeah.
32:47Yep.
32:48All right.
32:49Have a good one.
32:51Sounds good.
32:52I appreciate it.
32:54Yeah.
32:55So originally stuff was coming in for actual Hemingway Harbor with all sorts of wake zone violations,
33:04people being aggressive towards each other as far as wake zone violations go.
33:10So now that we know that this section is being hit hard by wake zone violations, we can actually
33:16focus, have somebody over at Hemingway Harbor and then somebody over here.
33:26That bird's in good shape.
33:27He's going to be successful.
33:28The other one's just hunkered in here.
33:30It's still got feathers on, or sorry, down on its head.
33:33Oh, in the nest?
33:34So I'm putting it closer to probably 36 to 38 days old.
33:39I don't think, you know, famous last words, but I don't think it'll be able to fly off
33:44on us.
33:44Okay.
33:48Oh.
33:49We've got a rattlesnake in here.
33:52Western rattlesnake.
33:55Tucked in nicely right under that bush.
33:57Oh, there he goes.
33:59Sees ya.
34:00Hey, buddy.
34:01Oh, there's goes a rattle.
34:02There he is.
34:03Yeah.
34:04Try not to get eaten by a fruginous hawk.
34:08Pretty sure I see it down on the top of one of their heads, so it tells me it's a
34:13younger
34:13bird.
34:14I like it.
34:15I think we end up just processing here.
34:17What do you think?
34:18Probably.
34:24You know, it's interesting.
34:25They're not that young, so there is two.
34:28Well, they're definitely younger than the one that flew away.
34:33Mental note of this, Mariah, there's some cottontail fur right there.
34:37More cottontails?
34:38Edge of the nest.
34:41Hey, buddy.
34:44I think the second one's even younger.
34:47It takes weeks for their feathers to grow out and to harden.
34:51So right now is kind of a critical period where you can grab them when they're pretty
34:55well-developed but not ready to fly yet.
34:58And there is the feistiness.
35:03Oh, don't, don't, don't, don't do that.
35:06Hey, hey, hey, hey.
35:07Relax.
35:07Relax, buddy.
35:08Hey.
35:09He wants to go and he's got a lot of wind in his wings.
35:12Uh-huh.
35:15Oh.
35:19Hey, buddy.
35:20Hey, buddy.
35:21Relax.
35:22Relax.
35:24Relax.
35:26Okay.
35:29Relax.
35:30I think two more males.
35:36Junior's slipping out the back.
35:38Okay.
35:39Let me know if you need me to move around.
35:46Whoa.
35:46Whoa.
35:47That was interesting.
35:48Did you see him?
35:49Did he just, like, lunge at you?
35:50Um, yeah.
35:51So I would, if, Mariah, go over to the back side, the downslope side.
35:55Okay.
35:56I'm gonna try for this guy quick.
35:58Three, two, one.
36:01Ah.
36:10That's a good bird.
36:11That's a good bird.
36:14We're gonna put him in a bag right now.
36:16It's for their own safety, really, and also just to keep them contained.
36:18That way they're not really tempted to try to run away or, or even fly away.
36:23Next.
36:25Glad you brought your hook.
36:27Um, just almost impossible to reach back there.
36:30Hey, buddy.
36:32Ch-ch-ch-ch-ch-ch.
36:33Come, come.
36:34Come on.
36:37Yeah.
36:39Hey, buddy.
36:42Ah.
36:43Ah.
36:44Ah.
36:47That smarted.
36:51Yeah.
36:52Ah.
36:52Ah.
36:53Ah.
36:58And…
37:02Relax.
37:05He drew blood too.
37:08I guess I deserve it.
37:19Any gesture?
37:28it wasn't just a piercing
37:29so that's actually probably good
37:30it let some of the bacteria flow out
37:33I feel like these guys this year are feistier
37:37than
37:38our previous
37:40words getting around
37:41I think so
37:43and the transmitter is on the outer bag
37:47probably at least 500 meters
37:49hey buddy
37:50we're gonna have to
37:51yes
37:53hey friend
37:55okay relax
37:59relax
38:15gotcha
38:21do you want to do his feet now or later
38:23we'll do him now once I get the hood on
38:26yeah we'll take the measurements
38:29we can go lights out buddy
38:30they don't like being handled by humans
38:33I mean that's not a surprise
38:35and by putting a hood on
38:36it minimizes the stress on the birds
38:38it's good that he reminded us to
38:41take him seriously
38:43okay so you got the wing pretty good
38:45we're going to look for some parasites in the blood
38:49we're also going to look for external parasites to make sure they're healthy
38:52I don't see
38:55really any parasites on peregrines either
38:58our primary goal is really to get these satellite transmitters on see how they use the landscape
39:03so where do they go once they leave their their nesting area it gives us a lot of information
39:08on mortality factors survival rates over time
39:11if you want to get a couple photos
39:15there we are
39:16one male
39:18fruginous hawk nestling
39:20banded
39:22how's that
39:22good
39:25close up of the face
39:27close up of that
39:30good teenage face
39:31there you are
39:32okay
39:33this will be a little bird
39:34okay
39:4024
39:43hey buddy
39:45here you go
39:46you're okay
39:47okay so
39:49he can get a transmitter
39:54there you go buddy
39:58seems like he's trying to get his head off
40:00but I don't think he's made much progress yet
40:04this is looking for blood-borne parasites
40:07looking for external parasites
40:10that's when we do the
40:11looking through the feathers
40:16and then
40:17combine that with
40:18blood analysis
40:24okay
40:24we're ready to
40:25return them
40:43hey buddy
40:44stay put
40:50that's a good bird
40:52good couple of birds
40:56are we friends again
40:57I don't know if we were friends
40:59to start with
40:59yeah we might never have been friends
41:01all right
41:01we'll make a graceful exit here
41:06so today was a totally successful day
41:08we banded nestlings at two different nests
41:10got two transmitters out
41:12satellite transmitters
41:13so we'll be collecting data for the next three years
41:15excellent
41:16got everything
41:17nestlings are back
41:20that's a good feeling
41:21two nests done
41:23and you've got the hood
41:24I've got the hood
41:25yeah
41:28you know
41:35you
41:37you
