00:38I'm Cade Maniscalco, and it's time for this week's edition of Play Ball, presented by Nike.
00:42Coming up on today's show, we've got a softball versus baseball showdown,
00:46and we take a closer look at yet another amazing accomplishment by Juan Soto in This Week in Baseball.
00:52But first, let's focus our attention on the 2026 MLB All-Star Game, which is right around the corner,
00:58and Colorado Rockies slugger Hunter Goodman will be there representing the Mile High City
01:02in his second career appearance in the Midsummer Classic.
01:05Now, let's learn a little bit more about the star catcher.
01:08What a tune for Hunter Goodman, new Rockies record for home runs in front of the All-Star break.
01:17First, who on your team do you think will have the most success with the ABS Challenge system?
01:21With the ABS Challenge system?
01:23Beck, he had a pretty good, he sees the ball pretty well.
01:29Tee Free, Tyler Freeman, thought he saw the ball pretty well last year,
01:33so I think there's a few guys that could have some success with it.
01:35If you could have anything on your pitch comms say something to the pitcher that's not the pitch, what would
01:41it be?
01:42Probably something to do with relaxing or breathing, just to calm him down a little bit.
01:47That would probably be something like that.
01:48If I gave you a million dollars to compete in a skills competition outside of baseball, what would you compete
01:53in?
01:53What would I compete in?
01:54That's a tough question.
01:56Maybe some sort of video games.
01:58Oh, okay.
01:59I've been playing Apex with some of the teammates and then some Rocket League as well.

02:04Who in your family would you trust most to umpire a game?
02:07To umpire a game?
02:08Definitely my dad, probably.

02:11I think he'd do a pretty good job.
02:13Oh, and my father-in-law's umpires softball games, so he would do pretty well too, I think.

02:20If you could create another position on the diamond, what would it be?
02:24I don't know.
02:25Where would you put him?
02:26So we had a couple of, a lot of hitters would say, like another outfielder.
02:30Yeah.
02:30Like fourth outfielder would probably be like, it'd be like when you play growing up.
02:34So yeah, you have like left and right center fielders.

02:37But yeah, there you go.

02:45Because I got to chat with Zach Netto of the Los Angeles Angels and Devin Nets of the Carolina Blaze.
02:50Now, let's hear what they both had to say about what they do when it's time to step up to
02:54the plate.
02:56All right, let's play ball.
02:58So I am joined with Zach Netto and Devin.
03:01So what we're going to start with is I want to see the differences between your approaches in the box.
03:05So Zach, I'm going to start with you.
03:07What are you thinking about before you step into the batter's box?
03:09Yeah, so, you know, on deck circle, I'm basically just trying to see, you know, I'm a big handbrake guy.
03:15So I'm trying to see, you know, how the pitch is going to look like.
03:17When do I start my timing?
03:19We get a pretty good idea in the dugout of like, you know, his release point and different things.
03:24So I'm looking for that just to be more comfortable with it.
03:27And then once I get to the box, it's just being an athlete, you know, be up there, compete.
03:30The fly ball, that's center field.
03:33Good!
03:34Zach Netto puts the Angels back on top.
03:38Zach, what about you?
03:39For me, hitting-wise, yeah?
03:41Hitting-wise, yeah.
03:41Hitting-wise, I'm going to think about being super, super simple.
03:44So for me, I'm going to walk up to the plate knowing that, you know what, I have prepared for
03:48this pitch,
03:49off this pitcher all week.
03:50This is what I've been working on, you know, prior.
03:52This is like my setup.
03:54So if anything, I'm kind of someone who is in the back of the box.
03:57And I like to almost put my foot on the back line because we got pitchers who are throwing.
04:00Like 70-plus.
04:01Yeah.
04:02So for me, I'm going to make sure that my foot's on the back of, you know, pretty much on
04:05that back line.
04:06And I'm going to make sure when I hit, I kind of almost want to be really balanced and even.
04:10And so when it comes to that, I'm just going to be super athletic and try to drive the ball
04:14wherever I can.
04:15Yeah.
04:16I love that.
04:16And I'm curious with both of you, are you moving in between pitches or are you kind of staying in
04:20one spot?
04:21Me, personally, I like to just stay in the same spot.
04:23I either open up my legs to, you know, get a little wider in my stance, you know, make sure
04:28I get in my legs.
04:29Or, you know, I'll shorten up knowing that I have to be a little quicker or I have enough time
04:33to, you know, adjust to a pitch.
04:35But basically, my biggest thing is just be boring, you know.
04:39Just be boring.
04:39That's as simple as it comes.
04:41And, you know, that's what good hitters do.
04:43Trout told me that a bunch.
04:44So, I also look up the trout.
04:46And so, it's pretty cool him, you know, being able to be a mentor as well.
04:50What about you?
04:51Well, for me, honestly, I'm just going to make sure that I just, like I said, keep things simple.
04:56I think I really resonate with everything that you said.
04:58So, if anything, you're kind of right on the money for that.

07:14the opportunity to play baseball and softball.
07:17This week's spotlight highlights HBCU connections from Nike RBI programs to Southern University.
07:27Welcome, everybody, to day two of the Andre Dawson Classic.
07:31Southern University is a historic program who has currently nine Nike RBI alumni on their team.
07:39Like, it's a small world of all of us just connecting, and we're all coming in as one.
07:42Like, it's just crazy.
07:43With the RBI, you just play a game you love, have fun, and you just work every day, and
07:47in the summer, you come to a great place.
07:49You never know, like, you playing most like a big league field, so, like, it's just a great
07:53exposure.
07:54We have a 12-hour bus ride, so you know the stories.
07:56We're crazy.
07:57We had some of the younger guys telling their stories, and then the older guys eventually
08:00just coming around and telling their experience and how everything went.
08:03Last year, we was here playing in the World Series.
08:06Yeah, I'm here, all the team, let's go!
08:08It was a great experience, just coming back here, just how much, like, I have grown up,
08:11and the more mature I got, and just learning the game more and more.
08:14I go every year.
08:15As I got a guy that's Andrew right now was the MVP a couple years ago.
08:18If they made a hit, that mean they won.
08:21They were some winners.
08:22I want guys that win, and they just all happen to be in the RBI program.
08:26He's an inspiration for his head coach, just how this young man has dealt with adversity.
08:31Playing against them when we were in RBI, just coming around and seeing their faces in
08:36college now is a big improvement, and it's like a real family culture just to see everybody
08:40again.
08:41We have a lot of kids from Atlanta, so, like, they've already been playing together, some
08:45from NOLA, so I feel like it's just, everybody's just coming in together as one already, so
08:48it just clicked very fast.
08:53Now, let's get back to Hunter Goodman in today's Mindfulness Minute.
08:59I got some buddies back home that I play video games with, and they don't really care if you
09:05went three for four, if you went over four, so just talking to them, hanging out, just
09:10kind of get your mind away from it.
09:12I mean, my wife's great.
09:13Having her around all season and talking to her, I mean, she doesn't care how I do on
09:17the field, so it's easy to kind of leave the stuff at the field when I go home, and then
09:22I'll text my dad a lot.
09:24He's always honest with me and then always helps me try to flush it, so it's always good.
09:29I mean, I think the biggest thing is baseball is a game of failure.
09:34I mean, you fail more than any other sport.
09:37I think just finding that one thing that helps you get through it, I mean, whether it's getting
09:42away from the game, doing stuff off the field, like, I know a lot of my teammates will go
09:48golfing on off days, just trying to do something active and get away from the field.
09:52I think you have to find just other avenues to kind of get your mind away from it for a
09:56little bit.

10:44Hey, I'm Joey Votto, and This Week in Baseball is back.

10:50Baseball's top all-star vote-getter, Shohei Otani, treated us to get another milestone before
10:55the break.
10:55After launching an Oppo Taco rocket for homer number 299 and the Dodgers win earlier this
11:01week, Shohei Otani hit career homerun number 300 on Tuesday night.
11:072-0, swung on, drilled deep to center field, it is back, it is gone!

11:17Oh, he matched a milestone in his first at back, a show that never ends!
11:22Otani becomes the first Japanese-born member of the 300 homer club, but the hitting is only
11:27half the show.
11:28On the mound, this two-way Titan is completely crushing it, a frontrunner in the NL Cy Young
11:33race with a microscopic ERA under 2.
11:36So he's pitched and hit the Dodgers to a double-digit lead in the West, a four-time MVP firmly
11:42on
11:43his way to a high five.
11:44Otani isn't just rewriting history, he's kind of making it look easy.
11:50The hometown kid is heading home, for the all-star break, that is.
11:55Tigers rookie shortstop Kevin McGonigal, a native of media Pennsylvania, has played his
11:59way into the Midsummer Classic in Philly.
12:01At 21 years old, McGonigal is the second youngest player in Tigers history to reach the all-star
12:07game.
12:07The O2 swing and line drive, grab the leap by McGonigal at short, flying through the air
12:13to the glove side.
12:14These boys are just playing baseball, playing ball.
12:16The first?
12:17That would be Mr. Tiger himself, Al Kaline, at 20 years and 205 days back in 1955.
12:24McGonigal has been everything and more for the Tigers.
12:27He was named AL Rookie of the Month back in April, and he hasn't slowed down since.
12:32McGonigal will be joined by fellow all-star teammates Dylan Dingler, Riley Green, and Justin
12:37Verlander.
12:37For the kid that grew up going to games at Citizens Bank Park and idolizing players like
12:42Chase Utley and Cole Hamels, this is the best kind of homecoming.
12:47Being named to an all-star team just once in a career is an incredible feat.
12:51But for Juan Soto, that's just part of his game.
12:53For the fifth time in his career, Soto is headed back to the all-star game.
12:58Soto finished second among NL outfielders thanks to a late surge in fan voting.
13:03Mets fans are unbelievable.
13:05I really appreciate everything that they have done for me.
13:08Seeing myself where I star in the boats and then see where I finish is incredible what
13:14they did.
13:14It will be his second start overall and his first all-star appearance as a New York
13:18man.
13:19Something crazy, at just 27 years old, he is the youngest player to make the Midsummer
13:24Classic with four different teams, the Nationals, Padres, Yankees, and now the Mets.
13:30So how did Juan Soto celebrate?
13:33By hitting a go-ahead bomb, of course.
13:36And a high fly ball, deep right field, right down the line.
13:40God, if it stays fair, that ball is out of here!
13:44Let's head back to the Big Apple and head to Soto's stomping ground in Queens.
13:48Built in the shadows of Shea Stadium, City Field became the new home of the New York Mets
13:52in 2009.
13:54City, designed in the likeness of Ebbets Field, features a gorgeous brick facade and
13:58nods to baseball's past throughout the ballpark.
14:00Enter through the Jackie Robinson Rotunda and head towards Shea Bridge to catch a glimpse
14:05of the home-run apple in center field.

15:03Former Giants infielder and gold-glover J.T. Snow recently looked back at his famous sleight
15:08of hand.
15:08Perez got a base hit as a pitcher, ran down the first base, but I didn't know where the
15:11ball was.
15:12My heart was, like, pumping.
15:14And I said, if this doesn't work, I'm going to look like an idiot.
15:17But it ended up working, so it was pretty cool.
