A paedophile will be released from jail when his sentence expires next month despite a bid by the South Australia government to keep him behind bars indefinitely. Former magistrate Peter Liddy has served a 25-year sentence for sexually abusing four children. He will mostly be confined to his home while the state continues its attempt to send him back to prison.

00:02Peter Liddy is one of South Australia's most notorious pedophiles.
00:06He was convicted of the sexual abuse of boys at the Brighton Surf Lifesaving Club in the 1980s.
00:13Liddy has been in custody since he was handed a 25-year sentence in 2001.
00:18But with that sentence coming to an end,
00:21the South Australian Government had been trying to keep him in jail indefinitely.
00:25Today, in South Australia's Supreme Court, Justice Rachel Grey approved his release
00:31on six months home detention under strict conditions.
00:34They include not going near children, not going within 50 metres of a school or playground
00:40and not using the internet.
00:42He will also need to have psychological and medical assessments
00:46to determine whether he's at risk of committing further sexual offences.
00:50But the case isn't over.
00:52Liddy will return to court in November when arguments over whether he should remain
00:57under supervision or even return to prison will be heard.
