00:02Do you know why these stairs, three stairs are here seemingly in the middle of nowhere on the
00:11corner of Unwin Street and Street and Drive in Western Creek? The answer will surprise you.
00:20Well technically they're not stairs, it's a mounting block for riders of horses to get on
00:27and off their horse right at this spot because here at Street and Drive is one
00:32of Australia's only Pegasus crossings and it allows those that are on their
00:39horses, residents of the nearby Allura horse paddocks to access places like
00:44Narrabunda Hill and Stromlo. Who'd have thought? If you walk past this intersection
00:50and you really observe it you might even notice there's two push buttons to allow
00:54the lights to change. One here a bit higher than normal for those on horses or
01:00with the horse by their side and then a normal pedestrian one over there as
01:05normal on the crossing. Unlike at most pedestrian crossings where the green man
01:13flashes for only what six to ten seconds to allow for the slower crossing of horses
01:19the green man flashes here for around 33 seconds allowing plenty of time for
01:26horses to get across the intersection.
01:46One of the most unexpected places to find mountain steps are these ones which date back a couple of
01:55centuries. This is on an old coaching route and it doesn't look anything like Canberra
01:59because it's not. This is Whitby. This is the North Sea. I mean Whitby in England and
02:05these mountain stones are still left around some of the villages and some of the
02:11towns. A hark back to the time when coaching routes came through here and the
02:16postman and others had to change and they jump up on these mountain steps so they
02:23can get on and off their horse. But look at the view, like a grandstand view of the
02:27ocean. Not quite as good a view as ours in Canberra of course. Some mountain
02:37stones like this one which date back centuries here in Edinburgh have been
02:43incorporated into the modern streetscape so it doesn't look like much of a step
02:48now but think two three hundred years ago when the road was a lower level and there
02:53wasn't the curb and guttering this was a step up so you could get into the shop or
02:58the building here.
