00:00... or insects were harmed in the making of this program,
00:02and that none of the training you're about to see be attempted unless under expert supervision.
00:07Eight braineese, one challenge.
00:10To use complex mass of 100 billion cells we call Brain
00:15for chance to win Brain Jutsu Black Brain Belt.
00:18This is Brain Jutsu.
00:26Born in Lancashire, trained in Japan, with mind as sharp as samurai sword,
00:32he is Brain Master. He is the Sensei.
00:36Konnichiwa, and welcome to Brain Jutsu.
00:41Mental training specially designed to boost brain power and focus.
00:46My trainees, or braineese, have been following a basic program of training
00:51in the comfort of their own home.
00:52A brain-boosting routine of exercise, sleep,
00:57and enough fruit and veg to stock a greengrocer's.
01:01I did all the training that I could.
01:03I did it almost every single day, and I feel really confident and really excited.
01:07I feel sort of prepared, but a little bit nervous.
01:09I don't know if I've trained enough.
01:11If I actually get through to enter the dojo, it'll be quite fun.
01:14I just hope I win.
01:16Now, my braineese must put their training into practice
01:19by testing a part of the brain we use every day.
01:23Level one.
01:25You're no fault!
01:27Take a look at this fish tank.
01:29How many white fish are there?
01:33Did you get two?
01:36Congratulations!
01:37You've just used your occipital lobes.
01:40This area, the seeing part of our brain, allows us to recognise and separate images from each other.
01:47The seven braineese, who use their occipital lobes the best,
01:51will be allowed to enter my brain jitsu dojo, where their training will continue.
01:56The one who fails will be left outside.
01:59Oh!
02:00Feel the burn.
02:02Enter the dojo!
02:06Our braineese must answer four questions by studying the different faces on the board in front of them.
02:12Get the questions right, and they'll be left with a four-digit code,
02:16which they must then use to unlock a piece of brain and secure their place in the dojo.
02:21But, with only seven pieces of brain and eight braineese,
02:25one of either Shauna, Ahem, Laura, Luke, Lucy, Duncan, Sarah or Kiri,
02:32will be left outside and eliminated.
02:37You could hear a grain of rice drop as the four questions are revealed.
02:42How many blue faces are there?
02:47How many faces have freckles?
02:57How many yellow smiley faces are there without freckles?
03:09How many yellow smiley faces are there without freckles?
03:10How many faces have two ears?
03:18The answer our braineese are looking for is 2667.
03:24Sarah reckon she's cracked the code already, but has she jumped too soon?
03:29Oh, it looks like it.
03:33Next up are Lucy and Shauna.
03:35Have they got the right combination?
03:40Faster than you can say deep-fried dumplings, Ahem unlocks a piece of brain.
03:46While the rest of our braineese have all had to go back to the noodle bar.
03:50Don't forget the code our braineese are searching for is 2667.
03:55As there are two blue faces, six faces with freckles,
04:00six yellow faces without freckles,
04:03and seven faces with two ears.
04:06Duncan is next to crack the combination, along with Lucy.
04:11With three more braineese also unlocking a piece of brain,
04:14that just leaves Sarah and Laura to battle it out for the last place in the dojo.
04:21Sarah's up first, but she's still not found that code.
04:26Don't panic, Sarah.
04:28Work those occipital lobes.
04:30You won't open it with your bare hands, Laura.
04:32You need the code.
04:36And it's Sarah who finally popped up on that lock,
04:39which means she's in and Laura is out.
04:48So, while seven have proved themselves worthy of entering the dojo
04:51and continuing their brain training,
04:53for Laura, it's the end of the road.
04:56I know where I went wrong now.
04:58It was on the last question.
05:00I think I didn't get this right in the challenge
05:01because I was so panicked and flustered
05:03because I knew that time was running out.
05:05With six levels to go,
05:07it's Ahem, Duncan, Lucy, Shauna,
05:11Kiri, Luke and Sarah,
05:13who received the first of their coloured brain belts.
05:16I feel really pleased that I came first.
05:20Some people are going to think I'm going to win then.
05:22It was really scary
05:23because me and Laura had to go for the orange brain.
05:25I got it wrong and then she got it wrong,
05:26but luckily I got it right the last time.
05:28I'm so glad I got it through to the next round.
05:30I think the yellow crashes with the white.
05:32I didn't do as well as some other people in the last round,
05:35but I think that might have been nerves.
05:37So now I've just got those nerves out of the way,
05:38I think I'm going to win that black belt.
05:42Rain Tito!
05:44In this next level of training,
05:46things are going to get really hard.
05:49Level two.
05:51Orange belt.
05:53We do things every day without even thinking about it,
05:56like kicking a football.
05:58But you try kicking it with the foot,
06:01whoo, you don't normally use.
06:03It's not easy, is it?
06:07If you manage to do that,
06:08you're using part of your brain
06:10that deals with problem solving,
06:12the frontal lobes.
06:13And that's what level two is all about.
06:16Taking something you normally do without thinking
06:19and doing it differently.
06:21Work it!
06:22To prepare them for using their frontal lobes
06:25in the next challenge,
06:26my brainees are going to need some training.
06:29Room of Mental Nourishment.
06:32This is the room of mental nourishment,
06:34where our young hopefuls
06:35will train their brains between every task.
06:37The more seriously they take their training,
06:39the better prepared they'll be
06:40for the challenges that lie ahead.
06:44And in level two,
06:45that challenge is all about getting their brains
06:47to think in a new way.
06:50Brain training.
06:51Take turns to call out the action on your cards.
06:54Everyone must do it only when you say
06:56Sensei says for the action.
07:00So, our brainees are going to be made
07:01to think about something,
07:03like following simple instructions
07:04that they'd normally do without thinking.
07:07Sensei says, look happy.
07:10Sensei says, touch right ear.
07:14Sensei says, shut left eye.
07:18Look sad.
07:20There's no fooling, Duncan.
07:22Sensei says, touch mouth with right hand.
07:26Sensei says, step backwards.
07:30Bit by bit, our brainees get into the groove,
07:33really working those frontal lobes.
07:36Sensei says, pass me a biscuit.
07:39Pass me a biscuit?
07:40Are you sure, Sarah?
07:43Rub some o'clock wise.
07:45Oh, you too, Jack.
07:47And you're out.
07:49Hey, time for a training tip.
07:52Tip, don't rush.
07:55Pause for two seconds.
07:56Think before you react.
07:59Ace advice.
08:01You see, spending a moment to think
08:02before rushing in
08:03really can improve your all-round focus.
08:07Sensei says, stand up and jump up and down.
08:11So, if you want to work your frontal lobes at home,
08:14why not try this exercise with your mates?
08:16Everyone take a crisp.
08:19You, you and you.
08:22How do our brainees think their training has gone?
08:25I think it is quite good to think before you act,
08:28because then you kind of double-check
08:29to make sure that you don't actually make a mistake.
08:32And that was the way you win.
08:33I decided that since I like chocolate biscuits
08:36and I have the power,
08:37I thought I'd make everyone give me a chocolate biscuit.
08:40And I didn't realise that this juice is really nice.
08:43Watch out, you guys.
08:44I'm going to win this, and you know it.
08:46Whatever, Duncan.
08:48Tell him, Shauna.
08:50So, will all those chocolate biscuits
08:52help or hinder Sarah?
08:54Will Kiri remember to think before she acts?
08:59And will confident Duncan do as well as he expects?
09:03It's time to find out,
09:04as our seven now put their frontal lobe training to the test.
09:08Guardian of the Dojo and Task Adjudicator the Sheehan
09:11will now demonstrate the level two challenge.
09:14Big ball, colour, Nats.
09:18Each brainy must pick two balls
09:20by calling out pair of coordinates from grid,
09:24for example, B2 and D3.
09:28Aim is to find two balls of same colour,
09:31matching not word on each ball,
09:33but colour that word is written in.
09:35So, in this case,
09:37they will have to remember that this ball was red
09:39and this one blue.
09:41If brainy's uncover match,
09:43they will progress to next level.
09:45Last brainy to find pair will be eliminated.
09:48My brainy tip for this task
09:50is to focus the mind on just one letter
09:53and not the whole word.
09:55What's important here is not the word,
09:57but the colour that it's written in.
10:01Hear those colours now.
10:08Three, two, one, it's go on the go.
10:11A, one.
10:13Remember, our brainy's must ignore the word
10:15and focus only on the colour it's written in.
10:18D, four.
10:19Which means Ahem's now looking for another green ball.
10:22Instead, he finds a blue.
10:24Will he remember for the next time?
10:26B, two.
10:29B, two.
10:31C, three.
10:35No joy for Duncan.
10:38D, one.
10:44A, one.
10:46While Lucy has already forgotten that A.M. only just picked A, one
10:50and that it definitely wasn't pink.
10:53A, one.
10:57There's that green again.
10:58B, three.
11:02Bad luck, Shauna, but A.
11:04Stick it in the old memory bank.
11:06D, four.
11:13B, three.
11:18Great balls of focus.
11:20Kiri finds the first pair.
11:22It's now Luke's turn.
11:24Will he remember his training
11:25and get his brain focusing just on those colours?
11:28A, one.
11:35B, two.
11:38Not this time.
11:40D, one.
11:45A, four.
11:50And Sarah fares no better.
11:55It's back to A, him.
11:57A, two.
12:01Who once again is searching for a green ball?
12:04A, one.
12:09And this time he nails it,
12:11remembering that green ball from his first turn.
12:15And there are no problems either this time
12:17for confident Duncan or Shauna,
12:19who also go through.
12:22Leaving Lucy, Luke and Sarah
12:24to fight for the last two remaining orange belts.
12:27First to go is Lucy.
12:29Here are the colours left.
12:32B, one.
12:36C, three.
12:41And another pair means that the pressure's now on Luke
12:44to follow suit.
12:47D, two.
12:52D, three.
12:56But yet again, Luke can't get his head round this back-to-front thinking,
13:00leaving the door wide open for Sarah.
13:04D, three.
13:07D, one.
13:11Who needs no second invitation?
13:15While Sarah can continue her journey towards mental mastery,
13:19for Luke, it's time to say sayonara
13:21and leave the dojo.
13:24Walk of eternal regret.
13:27I think the training before this round
13:30helped quite a lot
13:32because it made me think
13:33before I chose things.
13:35Unfortunately,
13:36I didn't get through.
13:41So, with five levels left,
13:43it's A-hem,
13:44Duncan,
13:45Lucy,
13:46Shauna,
13:47Kiri
13:47and Sarah
13:48who get orange brain belts.
13:50I'm really relieved that I came first
13:52because I really thought I'd go last.
13:55I still really want to win,
13:56but I think Shauna and Kiri
13:57may be competition for me.
13:59But I can't believe I nearly got out.
14:00I mustn't do it anymore.
14:01I've got to stay in.
14:04Brain T-Toon.
14:07Brainy.
14:08Not so brainy.
14:11Who's the clever clogs
14:12and whose brain needs a lot more training?
14:15It's the 1870s
14:16and a geezer called Alexander Graham Bell
14:19goes and invites the old dog and bone
14:20or telephone
14:21so you and I can gossip, gas
14:23and natter to people
14:24all over the world.
14:26Telephone-tastic.
14:27Hello?
14:27Mum, I'm on the telly.
14:29I'll call you back.
14:30Where was I?
14:30Oh yeah, phones.
14:31Off to Finland.
14:32Every year,
14:33a load of Finns
14:34and folks from all over the world
14:35take part in the
14:36Mobile Phone Throwing World Championships.
14:39Why?
14:39Well, to see how far they can throw them, of course.
14:41Right,
14:42I've got to ring the old dear back.
14:43Brainy,
14:44Alexander Graham Bell.
14:45Not so brainy.
14:46Phone flingers in Finland.
14:49Brain T-Toon.
14:53Competition in Brain Jitsu Dojo
14:55hotting up
14:55and only six brainy
14:57remain to battle it out
14:59under watchful eye of She-Han.
15:02Ehem,
15:02first to enter Dojo.
15:04I feel really pleased
15:05that I've come first.
15:07Sarah!
15:08I'm so glad I got
15:09referred to the next round.
15:10I think the yellow crashes
15:11but the white.
15:12Kiri,
15:13winner of last level.
15:14I'm quite excited
15:16about doing this, actually.
15:18Jonah!
15:20Confident Duncan!
15:22Watch out, you guys.
15:23I'm going to win this
15:24and you know it.
15:25And Lucy!
15:27Challenge is about
15:28to get even tougher.
15:29Only two brainy
15:30will make it to final test.
15:32Saber of Supreme Focus.
15:34Where?
15:35Must move ball
15:36with power of mind
15:37for chance to win
15:38Brain Jitsu Black Brain Belt.
15:40Here's time for...
15:42Level 3.
15:43Winzalt!
15:45Now,
15:46we all like to chat
15:47but did you know
15:48that using words
15:49to communicate
15:50is one of the main reasons
15:52why our brains
15:53have grown
15:53so incredibly powerful
15:55and that having a conversation
15:57exercises
15:58both halves
15:59of the brain.
16:00Now,
16:00if all that's doing
16:01your head in,
16:02allow me to explain.
16:04Think of it
16:05like air traffic control.
16:06While a pilot
16:07has to focus
16:08on landing
16:09just one plane,
16:11an air traffic controller
16:12is responsible
16:13for landing
16:14all sorts of planes.
16:15It's the same
16:16with the brain.
16:17There's the left half
16:18which deals
16:19with the details
16:20and there's the right half
16:21which looks
16:22at the overall picture.
16:23This next level
16:24of training
16:25strengthens my
16:26brainy's focus
16:27by working
16:28one half of their brain
16:30under pressure.
16:31Hey,
16:32pump it up!
16:33The Room
16:34of Mental
16:35Nourishment
16:38It's our brainy's
16:39second visit
16:40to the Room
16:40of Mental Nourishment
16:41where once again
16:42they'll train
16:43their brains
16:44in preparation
16:44for the next challenge
16:45which, remember,
16:47is all about
16:47using the two
16:48hearts of the brain
16:49to communicate.
16:51Brain training.
16:52Direct the
16:53blindfolded
16:54brainy
16:55to stack
16:56the blocks
16:57using
16:59only one hand.
17:00What do we have to do?
17:02What have we got to build
17:03anyway?
17:03What do we can build?
17:04Let's build me.
17:06I'm fabulous.
17:07I'm sure you are, Sarah.
17:08But building a statue
17:09to yourself?
17:11So...
17:11Let's build a brain.
17:13A very
17:14misshaped brain.
17:16The girls get cracking.
17:18Shauna
17:18using the right side
17:19of her brain
17:20to give instructions
17:20to her partner
17:21and Sarah
17:22using the left side
17:23of her brain
17:24to interpret them.
17:26And then put
17:26the other one down
17:28behind them.
17:29Behind them.
17:30Other one.
17:30Other way behind.
17:31Mind you,
17:32Sarah seems more
17:33focused on helping
17:34herself to those
17:35tempting refreshments.
17:36So you've got
17:37in there, yeah?
17:40Quit eating.
17:41Hurry up and do this,
17:42all right?
17:44Back.
17:46Back.
17:47No.
17:48Oh, my God.
17:49Come on!
17:53Move your hand
17:53directly forward.
17:55No one can question
17:56Ahem's focus, though.
17:57Now push the blocks
17:58on the right.
18:00Bottom right.
18:01On the...
18:01Forward a bit.
18:02On my left?
18:03Yeah, move the blocks A.
18:05Oh, yeah.
18:06Okay, the small blocks
18:07are block D then.
18:08Okay.
18:09Now move your hand.
18:10But while he's certainly
18:10giving Duncan a lot of detail,
18:12is labelling each box
18:13taking things just a bit
18:14too far?
18:15Just put it right.
18:16You see,
18:17what our guiders must do
18:18is focus only on getting
18:20across the essential
18:20information their partners
18:22need.
18:23No, left.
18:24You're left.
18:24You're right.
18:25I'm in.
18:25My right, yeah.
18:27What also helps
18:28is knowing you're left
18:28from you're right.
18:31I think Ahem was
18:33quite good at it
18:34and I think we worked
18:35quite well together,
18:36which was good.
18:36A lot of the time
18:37you said left
18:39and I thought
18:40you meant right
18:41or I thought you meant
18:42left and it was
18:43quite confusing as well.
18:45Getting the task done
18:46was pretty difficult
18:47because I really don't
18:48think we should have
18:49had these here
18:50because she was
18:50constantly reaching
18:51out, grabbing crisps,
18:52eating biscuits,
18:53having a drink.
18:54So whenever I said
18:56put your hand out,
18:57she always just
18:57instinctively grabbed
18:58her drink rather than
18:59the block I was trying
19:00to get her to pick up.
19:01Well, I was hungry
19:02and I was thirsty
19:03and you can't work
19:04without being
19:05completely
19:07thirsted up
19:08and
19:09not hungry.
19:10Is that even a word?
19:13Will Ahem get his
19:14direction finder
19:15back on track?
19:17And can Sarah
19:18forget about food
19:19long enough
19:20to focus on
19:21the coming task?
19:23Time to find out
19:24as they now put
19:25their training
19:26to the test
19:26for those five
19:27green brain belts.
19:30Balloon pop,
19:31number drop.
19:33This is pest
19:35of communication skill
19:36so six brainy
19:37must first divide
19:38into teams of two
19:39by drawing chopsticks.
19:44Quickly as possible,
19:46teams must burst
19:47six balloon
19:48containing number
19:49which go together
19:50to form some.
19:51Pairs need to decide
19:52who is Guider,
19:53who is Popper.
19:55With Popper
19:56unable to see
19:57under helmet,
19:58they will be relying
19:59on Guider
20:00to help them
20:01burst balloon.
20:03When all balloon
20:04popped,
20:05brainy stopped
20:05clock by shouting
20:06Rinjitsu.
20:09Quicker they burst
20:10balloon,
20:10more time
20:11have to pick up
20:12number
20:12and make some.
20:14Once brainy
20:15are happy
20:15with answer,
20:16hit the gong.
20:18First two team
20:19to work out
20:20correct answer
20:20get green belts
20:22and advance
20:22to next level.
20:24One brainy
20:24from losing team
20:25will be eliminated.
20:28The key to success here
20:29is for the Guider
20:30to use the right
20:31side of their brain
20:32to follow their
20:33team mates' progress
20:34and give them
20:35clear instructions.
20:37For their partner,
20:38it's vital
20:39they use the
20:40left side of their brain
20:42to focus on these
20:43instructions
20:43and nothing else.
20:49first to put their
20:50communication training
20:51to the test
20:52are Lucy
20:53and Duncan.
20:55Confident as ever,
20:56Duncan takes control
20:57using the right
20:58side of his brain
20:59to guide Lucy
21:00from one balloon
21:01to the next.
21:03to the left
21:06and stop
21:07and pop
21:10forward
21:11forward
21:11stop
21:12and pop
21:14forward
21:15a tiny weenie
21:15into bits
21:16and pop
21:18back a tiny bit
21:19but the two
21:19run into a spot
21:20of bother.
21:21And try again.
21:23No matter what he says,
21:24Duncan just can't
21:25get the balloon
21:26to line up
21:27with the pin
21:27on Lucy's helmet.
21:28And pop.
21:30And it's costing
21:31them valuable
21:31time.
21:33It's brain jitsu.
21:34At last they finish
21:35the job
21:36in a time of
21:37one minute
21:37forty-eight seconds.
21:42Forward
21:43right
21:45pop
21:46It's now
21:47Kiri and Ahem's
21:48turn.
21:49After some
21:49criticism of his
21:50guiding during
21:51training,
21:51Ahem's now
21:52switched roles.
21:53Pop
21:55And it seems
21:56to be working.
21:57Both brainies
21:58working one half
21:59of their brain
21:59each
22:00to great effect.
22:01Forward
22:02Left
22:04Pop
22:05Forward
22:07Pop
22:09Left
22:11Pop
22:13Brain jitsu!
22:15With Ahem jumping
22:17higher than a samurai
22:17on stilts,
22:18the two burst
22:19their last balloon
22:20in a pop-tastic
22:21one minute
22:21four seconds.
22:24Last to pop
22:25are Sarah
22:26and Shauna.
22:27But incredibly,
22:28Shauna hasn't
22:29noticed the
22:29Sheehan start
22:30signal.
22:31Wakey,
22:32wakey,
22:32Shauna.
22:33Big step
22:33forward.
22:35Okay.
22:36Back a bit.
22:37Jump.
22:38Pop.
22:39Once going,
22:40it's a pretty good
22:40display of communication.
22:42To the left,
22:43big step.
22:45To the left
22:45just a tiny bit.
22:47Back just a tiny bit.
22:48To the right
22:49just a bit.
22:50Pop.
22:50Although simply
22:51using the word
22:52bit to help
22:53Sarah find her target
22:54isn't that helpful.
22:56Pop.
22:58Brain jitsu.
22:59The two
23:00stop their clock
23:01in one minute
23:0147 seconds,
23:03just ahead
23:04of Lucy and
23:04Duncan,
23:05but behind
23:06Kiri and Ahem,
23:07who set off
23:08first to find
23:08their numbers.
23:14Here's what
23:15our braineers
23:16are looking for.
23:17See if you
23:17can work out
23:18the sum.
23:23Remember,
23:24the first two
23:25teams to work
23:25it out
23:26will go through
23:26to the next level.
23:33That's the final
23:34gong,
23:34but do the numbers
23:35add up?
23:3716 plus 5
23:38minus 3
23:38equals 18.
23:40That looks good
23:41to me.
23:42And the
23:42Sheehan agrees.
23:45In fact,
23:46all three teams
23:47have found
23:47the correct
23:48solution,
23:49but as the
23:50last to finish,
23:51it's Lucy and
23:52Duncan who'll be
23:53battling it out
23:53to avoid elimination
23:55in the...
23:56Step!
23:57Step!
24:01With just one
24:02green belt up
24:03for grabs,
24:04both braineers
24:04must use all
24:05their powers
24:06of focus
24:06to fight
24:07the urge
24:08to blink.
24:08The first
24:09to falter
24:10will be
24:10eliminated.
24:15It's Duncan
24:16who can fight
24:17the urge
24:17no longer.
24:20While Lucy's
24:21staring skills
24:21have brought her
24:22a step closer
24:23to that
24:23elusive black belt,
24:24the only thing
24:25confident Duncan
24:26is now staring
24:27at is elimination.
24:30Walk of
24:31eternal regret.
24:33I'm feeling
24:34quite bad.
24:35I think
24:35maybe I could
24:35have gone
24:35further.
24:36I'm not
24:36very good
24:37at stopping
24:38blinking,
24:39but oh well.
24:40I had a
24:41really fun
24:42time,
24:42so yeah.
24:44So with
24:45four levels
24:45to go,
24:46it's Ahem,
24:47Lucy,
24:48Shauna,
24:49Kiri and
24:50Sarah who
24:51line up for
24:51their green
24:52belts.
24:52It went
24:53really well
24:54and so I'm
24:54so happy that
24:56me and Sarah
24:57won.
24:57I finally came
24:58first,
24:59I'm really happy,
24:59but I probably
25:00couldn't have done it
25:01that's Shawna.
25:02I'm really happy
25:03that I got this
25:03far and I really
25:04want to win
25:05the black belt.
25:08Brain T2!
25:12Level 4.
25:14Blue Vault!
25:15This fourth level
25:17requires our brain
25:18ease to master
25:19a primitive part
25:20of the brain
25:20called the
25:21amygdala,
25:22the area
25:23that responds
25:24to threat.
25:28Remember the last
25:29time you felt
25:30afraid or
25:31panicky,
25:32maybe you were
25:32just about
25:32to sit
25:33an exam.
25:34Well,
25:34that feeling
25:35was triggered
25:36by the old
25:37amygdala.
25:38Now stress
25:39can make you
25:40lose focus,
25:41fact,
25:42which is why
25:43my brain ease
25:44must train
25:45to keep their
25:45emotions under
25:47control.
25:48The room
25:49of mental
25:50nourishment.
25:53Back in the
25:54room of mental
25:54nourishment,
25:55it's time for
25:55our five brain ease
25:57to train in
25:57how to overcome
25:58fear and stay
26:00focused.
26:03Brain training.
26:05Form a circle,
26:06pass the
26:06disgusting drink
26:07around the circle,
26:08only passing it
26:09on when you have
26:09said a different
26:10word ending
26:10in the letter D.
26:13after one minute,
26:14the brainy holding
26:15the drink has to
26:16drink it.
26:17So,
26:17our brainy's
26:18must block out
26:18the cheesy
26:19Stilton juice
26:20and concentrate
26:21only on coming
26:22up with a new
26:23word.
26:23Should I start?
26:25Should I start?
26:26Word.
26:28Er,
26:29fed.
26:31Dad.
26:33Glad.
26:35Died.
26:37It's a good start,
26:38but as the clock
26:39ticks down,
26:39a bit of hesitation
26:40creeps in.
26:42Head.
26:43Did.
26:44Sad.
26:46Pride.
26:52Well,
26:52that looks
26:53suspiciously
26:54like panic.
26:55Head.
26:56No,
26:56no,
26:57no,
26:57no.
26:58We've already
26:58said that.
26:59I've said that.
27:00said.
27:00Okay.
27:01Ed and a D.
27:02Er,
27:02red.
27:03The minute's up
27:04and it's Shauna
27:05who's left
27:05holding the
27:06drink of stink.
27:08Don't look.
27:09That's it,
27:10Shauna,
27:10down the arch.
27:13Time for a tip.
27:15Tip.
27:17Concentrate.
27:18Try to blank out
27:19the time and fear
27:20of the drink
27:21to avoid panicking.
27:24Next time you're
27:24feeling the pressure,
27:25say you're in the
27:26middle of a test.
27:27Try not to worry
27:28about the time.
27:29The chances are
27:30you'll stay much
27:30more focused.
27:32Dod.
27:33Is that such a word?
27:34That is not.
27:35That's not a word.
27:36That's right,
27:36Sarah,
27:37you keep him honest.
27:38Try and I'll say
27:39something else.
27:40Todd.
27:41Todd?
27:41Are you allowed
27:42to use names
27:43if it's a word
27:44and it ends
27:44in a D?
27:45It's a word,
27:46not a name.
27:47Name is a word.
27:48It's different.
27:49I think it's
27:50different.
27:52Outvoted by the
27:53girls,
27:53Ahem racks his brain
27:54to think of another
27:55word,
27:56but his mind's
27:56gone blank
27:57as his amygdala
27:58finally got the
27:59upper hand,
28:00I wonder.
28:03Oh dear,
28:04hard luck,
28:04Ahem.
28:07Pass me the
28:08biscuit.
28:08I'm the biscuit.
28:09I'm the coat.
28:10It's okay,
28:10it's okay.
28:11You'll need it
28:12after I swear.
28:13I don't want to watch.
28:15What does it taste like?
28:17Cheese.
28:18Cheese.
28:20During that game,
28:21everyone thought
28:22I was hesitating
28:22on purpose,
28:23but actually,
28:24when I panic,
28:25my brain goes
28:25all scrambled.
28:26Well,
28:26it is a bit unfair
28:28since I'm the only boy
28:29and I'm representing
28:29the boy,
28:30and since a name
28:31is a word,
28:32so it should count.
28:33I didn't find
28:34the tip that useful
28:35because the drink
28:36has been passed around
28:37and you're constantly
28:38looking at it
28:39and thinking about it,
28:40so you can't really
28:41stop thinking about it.
28:43So,
28:44will Sarah unscramble
28:45her brain in time
28:46for the next task?
28:48And will last boy
28:49left Ahem be able
28:50to hold his own
28:51against the girls?
28:53It's time to find out
28:54as our five put
28:55their brain train
28:56into the test
28:57in a fear-filled challenge
28:59that will decide
28:59who gets their
29:00blue brain belt.
29:03Creepy Crawly Word Grab!
29:06This level
29:07will test of mind
29:08over matter
29:08for brainies
29:09and will push them
29:10to really overcome
29:11their fear.
29:12Underneath the creepy crawlies
29:14lie an assortment
29:15of letters
29:15worth different points.
29:17Brainies have just
29:18one minute
29:18to plunge hands
29:19into tank
29:20and pick out
29:21up to seven letters each.
29:23They then have
29:24a further minute
29:25to make higher scoring
29:26words they can.
29:29To do well,
29:30my brainies
29:31must block out
29:32the signals
29:33coming from their
29:34amygdala
29:34and ignore
29:35the creepy crawlies.
29:36The quicker
29:37they combat
29:38their fear,
29:39the more time
29:39they'll have
29:40to pick out
29:40the high scoring
29:41letters.
29:51Underneath this pile
29:52of worms
29:53are an extra
29:53five golden letters.
29:55If our brainies
29:56manage to use
29:56one in their word,
29:57they'll double
29:58their score.
30:02our brainies
30:03dive straight in,
30:04ignoring the signals
30:05coming from their
30:06amygdalas
30:07to get those letters.
30:08But Lucy doesn't
30:10look too happy.
30:11Are those worms
30:11affecting their focus?
30:13Shawna, on the other
30:14hand, looks as cool
30:15as you like.
30:18Ahem also appears
30:19to have remembered
30:20his training.
30:23The minute's up.
30:24Our brainies
30:25now have a further
30:26minute to make
30:26the highest scoring
30:27word they can
30:28from their letters.
30:30Ahem's got himself
30:31a bunch of letters,
30:32but they're all
30:33low scoring.
30:34He'll have to work
30:34hard to make
30:35a decent word.
30:38No such problem
30:39for cool,
30:40calm, Shawna.
30:42See if you can
30:43make a word
30:44from the anagram
30:44on the screen
30:45now.
30:55There's the second
30:56gong.
30:57How have our brain
30:58he's done?
31:00Toss.
31:02With only those
31:03low scoring letters
31:04to work with,
31:05that's just four points
31:06for Ahem.
31:07Bin.
31:09That's six points
31:10for Lucy.
31:13Code.
31:14A useful seven points
31:16for cool,
31:16calm, Shawna.
31:18Poor.
31:19A far from poor
31:20eight points
31:21for Kiri.
31:23Grip.
31:24And another
31:24eight points
31:25for Sarah.
31:27All of which
31:28means that it's
31:29Ahem who must
31:30hand over his
31:31brain belt
31:31and leave
31:32the dojo.
31:41Walk of
31:42eternal
31:43rest.
31:45I think it went
31:46wrong because
31:46I only got
31:47two vowels
31:48and four
31:49contents
31:49and my letters
31:50were only
31:50one point.
31:53I feel a bit
31:54gutted that
31:55I've got out
31:55this far
31:56but at least
31:57I was the best
31:58of the boys
31:58so that's okay.
32:02So with only
32:03three levels left
32:04those who used
32:05their minds
32:06to master
32:06the worms
32:07are rewarded
32:08with blue belts.
32:09The bugs
32:09were really
32:10horrible and
32:11slimy and it
32:11was quite hard
32:12because the soil
32:13kept covering
32:14the letters
32:15but luckily
32:16I got enough
32:18to make a word.
32:19But I was quite
32:19surprised it was
32:20worms because I
32:21thought it would be
32:21a little bit more
32:21disgusting.
32:22I'm all right with
32:23worms.
32:23I'm really
32:24really glad
32:25that I got
32:25through because
32:26it's quite hard
32:27to tell if
32:27you've got
32:28through or not
32:29because you
32:29can't say
32:29anyone else's
32:30words.
32:31Brain T2
32:35Brainy
32:36Not so brainy
32:39Who's the clever
32:40clogs and
32:40whose brain
32:41needs a lot
32:41more training?
32:42Emails
32:43internet brain
32:44training computer
32:44games.
32:45None of which
32:46would be possible
32:46without John
32:47Vincent Atanasoff
32:48who invented
32:48the first ever
32:49electronic digital
32:50computer back
32:51in 1937.
32:53www.computerboffintastic.com
32:55Now back in
32:561988 another
32:57electronic boffin
32:58called Robert Morris
32:59created the first
33:00computer virus
33:01and had the bright
33:01idea of releasing
33:02it onto the
33:03internet as a
33:04harmless experiment.
33:05Problem was
33:06his little virus
33:07quickly
33:07grew out of
33:08control
33:08causing millions
33:09of computers
33:10to crash
33:10worldwide
33:11and costing
33:12the US
33:12government
33:12alone
33:13over 10
33:14million dollars.
33:15Now that is
33:16what I call
33:16a bad day
33:17at the office.
33:19Brainy
33:19John Atanasoff
33:21Not so brainy
33:22Robert Morris
33:26Brain Jitsu
33:29Attention in
33:30Brain Jitsu
33:31Dojo mounting
33:32Now just
33:33four young
33:34hopeful
33:34remain
33:34to compete
33:35under
33:36watchful eye
33:36of Shihan.
33:38Kiri
33:39I'm quite
33:40excited about
33:41doing this
33:41actually
33:42Lucy
33:43lucky to get
33:44past
33:44Creepy Crawly
33:44The bugs
33:45are really
33:45horrible and
33:46slimy and
33:47it was quite
33:47hard
33:48Cool
33:48calm
33:48Shona
33:49It went
33:50really well
33:50and sound like
33:51so happy
33:52and Sarah
33:53and Sarah
33:54stronger
33:54stronger with
33:54each level
33:55I finally
33:56came first
33:57I'm really
33:57happy
33:58Only two
33:59Brainy will
34:00make final
34:00showdown
34:01table of
34:02supreme
34:02focus
34:03where
34:04must move
34:04ball
34:05with power
34:05of mind
34:06Brain Jitsu
34:08Black Brain
34:08Belt is within
34:09their grasp
34:10is time for
34:11Level 5
34:13Red Vault
34:16Now if you're
34:17learning to
34:17climb trees
34:18like Tarzan
34:19then you might
34:20be interested to
34:21know that your
34:21new hobby is
34:22doing wonders
34:23for the old
34:23grey matter
34:25exercising both
34:26the thinking
34:26part of the
34:27brain
34:27the cerebrum
34:28and the
34:29doing part
34:30the cerebrum
34:31You see
34:32doing new
34:33things
34:33increases the
34:34flow of blood
34:35into your
34:35head
34:36which keeps
34:37your brain
34:37cells topped
34:38up with the
34:38oxygen they
34:39need to
34:40perform at
34:40their best
34:41So in
34:42Level 5
34:43my Brainy's
34:44are going to
34:44be challenged
34:45to learn
34:46new skills
34:46Now you can
34:48speed up
34:48how quickly
34:49the brain
34:50takes in
34:50new stuff
34:51and this is
34:52what our
34:52Brainy's
34:53are going to
34:54train for
34:54now
34:55The Room
34:56of Mental
34:57Nourishment
35:00It's our
35:01Brainy's
35:01fourth visit
35:02to The Room
35:03of Mental
35:03Nourishment
35:03where they'll
35:04be training
35:05their brains
35:05on how to
35:06learn new
35:06skills
35:09Okay our
35:10next brain
35:11training task
35:12is to spin
35:13the drumstick
35:14between your
35:15fingers for as
35:16long as possible
35:17I guess that's
35:17what those are
35:18for then
35:18Can anyone
35:19actually spin
35:20the stick around
35:21I probably
35:21could
35:22Yeah look
35:22Okay let's
35:24all grab one
35:24One hand Sarah
35:26please
35:28I'm going to
35:28start there
35:29actually
35:32Yeah I've got
35:33the hang of it
35:33so it's not
35:34Pretty soon
35:34our Brainy's
35:35are spinning
35:35faster than
35:36a ninja
35:37doing back
35:37flips
35:39and then Sarah
35:40has a brain
35:40wave
35:41Let's have a
35:42competition
35:43Whoever can
35:44do it for the
35:45longest
35:45can have a
35:46cookie
35:47Three two
35:48one
35:48go
35:56Oh dear
35:57looks like
35:58that choccy
35:59biscuit
35:59will have to
35:59wait
36:00Never mind
36:01here's a
36:01yummy training
36:02tip instead
36:03Tip
36:05Approach
36:06this
36:06positively
36:08Life
36:09out loud
36:10for 30
36:10seconds
36:14With some
36:15help from
36:16the laughter
36:16tip
36:16our Brainy's
36:17get into
36:17the spirit
36:18The next
36:19time you
36:20face a
36:20tough mental
36:20challenge
36:21try laughing
36:22It might
36:23sound strange
36:23but a fit of
36:24the giggles
36:24can help
36:25with confidence
36:25as well as
36:26increasing your
36:27heart rate
36:28sending extra
36:29oxygen into
36:30the brain
36:30helping it
36:31to perform
36:31at its best
36:34Well basically
36:34I think that
36:36it helps to
36:36be happy
36:36in life
36:37because then
36:37you make
36:37the best
36:38out of a
36:38bad situation
36:39Yeah I
36:39think it was
36:40a really
36:40good tip
36:41because I
36:41think as long
36:42as you're
36:42kind of
36:43happy
36:43then what
36:44you're doing
36:45doesn't really
36:45seem so
36:46odd and
36:47unusual and
36:48weird
36:48Will laughing
36:49Lucy be
36:50laughing all
36:50the way
36:50towards the
36:51red belt
36:53Can Kiri
36:54keep confident
36:57And will
36:58cool calm
36:59Shauna be
36:59quite so
37:00happy when
37:00their pressure
37:01is on
37:02Only time
37:03will tell
37:04as our
37:04four now
37:05put their
37:05new skill
37:06strain into
37:06the test
37:07and compete
37:08for their
37:08red brain
37:09belts
37:13To win
37:14red belt
37:15Brainy must
37:16guide hoop
37:16on helmet
37:17from one
37:17end of
37:18wire to
37:18other
37:19Is race
37:20against
37:20clock
37:21but Brainy
37:22must take
37:22care
37:22If they
37:23touch wire
37:24not only
37:25do they
37:25collect
37:26five second
37:26penalty
37:27they also
37:28receive
37:28brain buzz
37:29from
37:29brabating
37:30helmet
37:31But most
37:31funny
37:32Brainy
37:32with slowest
37:33time
37:33will be
37:34eliminated
37:35The tip
37:36for my
37:37brainies
37:37in this
37:37next task
37:38is to
37:40remain calm
37:41and think
37:41positive
37:42thoughts
37:43Giving in
37:43to frustration
37:44will only
37:45lessen their
37:45focus
37:46and slow
37:47them up
37:48So will
37:48our
37:49brainies
37:49remember
37:49their
37:50training
37:50and stay
37:50positive
37:51or will
37:52they let
37:52the pressure
37:52get to
37:53them
37:54First
37:54to go
37:55is laughing
37:55Lucy
37:59A bit
38:00of contact
38:01there
38:01but it's
38:01a good
38:02start
38:05Lucy's
38:05clearly
38:06remembered
38:06her
38:06training
38:07ignoring
38:07the
38:08vibrating
38:08helmet
38:08and
38:09staying
38:09positive
38:26next is
38:27cool
38:27calm
38:27Shauna
38:28how will
38:29she cope
38:29with this
38:30new skill
38:32Like Lucy
38:33Shauna
38:34also gets
38:34off to
38:35a good
38:35start
38:35both
38:36smooth
38:36and
38:37steady
38:38But then
38:39her
38:40concentration
38:40slips
38:41and the
38:41penalty
38:41points
38:42start
38:42to
38:42rack
38:43up
38:54Next
38:55it's
38:55Kiri
38:55who
38:56immediately
38:56starts
38:57to get
38:57into
38:57all
38:57sorts
38:58of
38:58trouble
38:58making
38:59more

39:01of
39:01grappling
39:02sumos
39:03You can
39:04see
39:04the
39:04frustration
39:05on her
39:05face
39:06as she
39:06struggles
39:06to get
39:07the

43:26not bad
43:27but I wonder if cool calm Shauna can do any better
43:31there was a roast chicken and a mouse
43:34which ate some bananas and got attacked by a rubber chicken
43:38stop copying them
43:39and left his eyeballs
43:40like Sarah Shauna's using the story method and it's clearly working
43:44attacked by a scary arm and all the frogs the french were eating were flushed down the toilet
43:49they rung the bell for service and found out that everyone was ducks
43:52they threw eggs at gnomes cut the gnomes in half of scissors and then found out they're all red cabbages
43:57in disguise
43:58oh my god you did it
44:01she certainly did
44:02everyone deserves a cookie
44:04try using the same technique to train your brain
44:07maybe make up a story linking all the streets in your area and see if you can remember them all
44:12I'm not that worried about the task
44:14because um
44:15I'm actually really good at memory
44:17making mistakes will help me but like
44:19I'm not
44:20I can't remember stuff that easily
44:22it's alright
44:22you'll get used to it
44:24so will cool calm Shauna prove to be a master of memory
44:29and will laughing Lucy's lack of confidence be a downfall
44:35it's time to find out as our three red belt holders put their train into the test
44:40super memory dizzy dance
44:45each brainy is spin round on dizzy wheel total of ten time
44:49task is to use all power of focus to memorize five images in front of them
44:56then race against clock to cross balancing beam and collect same five images from ten hanging above them
45:06then must arrange pictures in descending order based on number of legs on each image
45:12when brainy happy with selection it's gong to stop clock
45:18my tip for the brainy's is to keep focused on the main objective
45:23and use their training to link the five images together
45:28our final three brave the wheel to compete for their brown brain belt
45:32and the chance of a place at the table of supreme focus
45:35it's time to spin
45:41will their memory training help our brainies to remember the images
45:45and ignore the effects of being spun round like termites in a tumble dryer
45:53first to head off is laughing Lucy
45:55looking just a little unsteady
45:57here are the five images she's looking for
46:00don't forget our brainies must fight the dizziness
46:03and arrange the five images in order of the number of legs on each
46:07for every one they get wrong it's a five second penalty
46:10the brainy with the slowest time will be eliminated from the dojo
46:20here's the right order again
46:26ooh don't recognise him
46:33and that looks like four out of five for Lucy
46:38next to step off the dizzy wheel is cool calm Shauna
46:41it's all good during training
46:45again here's what she's looking for
46:50that's five images
46:54now all Shauna has to do is get them in the right order
47:05top marks for Shauna
47:11last but not least is Sarah
47:15looking down those images in no time
47:17this is one brainy in a serious hurry
47:33phew that looks like five eight to five as well
47:37so who will be going through
47:42with one penalty laughing Lucy finished in one minute seventeen seconds
47:48with no penalties cool calm Shauna finished in 56 seconds
47:55while Sarah also with no penalties finished in a turbocharged 43 seconds
48:02which means that Sarah and Shauna are still in and laughing Lucy is out
48:12walk of eternal regret
48:15the spinning made me feel really dizzy and that caused me to get the penalty and that was the most
48:23hardest thing
48:23i'm feeling really gutted that i'm out and i thought i'd get into the final two but i didn't
48:32so with one level to go that leaves just cool calm Shauna and Sarah to don their brown brain belts
48:39and prepare for the final showdown
48:42i can't even describe how happy i am i never thought i'd get this far now that i have the
48:47chance to get the black belt i'm going to try it so hard to win and i have a feeling
48:51that i might just do it
48:54brain jitsu
48:59eight young hopeful arrived at brain training dojo to fight for brain jitsu black brain belt
49:05as training got tougher brainy fell by wayside some lack focus
49:11others mental control
49:14one by one most have been eliminated
49:17now just two remain
49:20cool calm shauna miss consistency
49:23i am so pleased to be fruit because really all i want to do is get to that black belt
49:28and Sarah winner of last two level
49:32i'm so glad i got fruit in the next round i think the yellow crashes with the white
49:36but who will use brain training to the max to win this last challenge
49:43level seven black belt
49:45so this is it
49:48between my two remaining brainy's and the black belt stands brain jitsu's ultimate challenge
49:55a mental jewel that is head to head in every sense
49:59the battlefield a table but not just any table for this my friends is the table of supreme focus
50:07where our two brainy's will attempt to move a ball across the table using only the power of their mind
50:15by getting this far
50:16they've already demonstrated mental control under many different types of pressure
50:21but now they must learn to focus their minds by entering a state of total calm
50:27to prepare them my two finalists will need to get into the zone
50:33room of mental nourishment
50:38in this their final visit to the room of mental nourishment
50:41our last two brainy's are about to train in how to stay focused
50:45no matter what's happening around them
50:50mentally prepare yourself for the final task don't let the sounds kick you off
50:56not in the least put off by the sound known to turn hardened ninjas into nervous wrecks
51:01our two brainy's enter the zone
51:07great work brainy's i'm not sure these two need a tip but here's one anyway
51:13we've got a tip repeat three positive statements to yourself
51:29while the girls may not quite have grasped the idea of talking to themselves
51:33you can't fault their confidence
51:35i am strong young and confident i will win the next task
51:40i am young strong and confident i will win the next task
51:45so how mentally prepared are you then
51:47i'm so mentally prepared i don't need any preparation
51:50i'm not scared of you
51:51you should be
51:53with nothing to choose between them and both supremely confident
51:57which of our two brainy's is gonna come out on top
51:59hey let's find out
52:03table of supreme focus
52:08rules are simple
52:09each brainy must push ball to the opponent's end of table using only power of mind
52:15sensors in brainy's headbands measure brainwaves
52:19this is converted into electrical signal which moves ball
52:23more focused mind stronger signal and faster ball will travel
52:28see how brainies are doing on this readout
52:31two lines represent each player's brainwaves
52:34lower the line
52:36more concentrated their mind
52:45to make sure this is the test of all tests our brainies must win the best of three rounds
52:53so this is the big one
52:55our two finalists must use all their brain training to enter their zone of absolute focus
53:00this is the reason they came to the dojo
53:03this is the moment they've been training for
53:10it's sarah who's first to get the ball moving
53:13her lower black line showing she's focusing well
53:19cool calm shauna's refusing to back down
53:22and starts to push the ball away
53:28but sarah digs deep
53:30and this time manages to push the ball all the way to her opponent's end
53:34ho ho one nil to sarah
53:39round two
53:46this time it's shauna who's off to the better start
53:49her green line now the lower of the two
54:01and even though sarah's using her breathing to help her focus
54:04it's not having much effect
54:06shauna's just too strong for her
54:10one all
54:12it's all down to this the final round
54:14who will cope best with the brain strain
54:20we're off
54:21and it's shauna who's just got the edge
54:30but within centimeters of victory sarah stops the ball in its tracks
54:40back comes shauna
54:44and with the finishing line again in sight
54:46sarah holds her off
54:50but little by little shauna piles on the pressure
54:53and it's third time lucky
54:56it's all over
54:57after an epic battle of concentration
55:00it's shauna who's training has paid off
55:03finding new depths of focus when it really mattered
55:06she truly has proved herself to be a master of the mind
55:09and worthy winner of the brain jitsu black brain belt
55:14winning the belt just makes me feel so excited
55:18i must say i'm still a bit relaxed
55:20it's not quite sunk in yet
55:21but glory for one brings disappointment for another
55:25and although she fought valiantly
55:27sarah must now leave the dojo
55:31walk of eternal regret
55:36i think shauna had the up hand
55:37because um
55:38she's a lot more calmer than me in real life
55:41and i was a little bit hyped up before i went in
55:44so that might have struck down my chances a bit
55:48i still think i could have done better
55:49i want a rematch
55:59what an amazing performance from cool calm shauna
56:02trailing one nil on the table of supreme focus
56:05this plucky brainy refused to give up
56:08and when the pressure was really on
56:10it was shauna who was able to call on all her training
56:13and grab that black brain belt
56:16yeah
56:17what i've learned from this whole process
56:19is to constantly keep your brain in gear
56:22don't just tune out
56:23constantly be thinking of stuff
56:25always practice and always give it your all
56:28whenever you're faced with a challenge like this
56:30our journey has come to an end
56:32another brainy has proven themselves worthy
56:35to wear the brain jitsu black belt
56:37but while brain jitsu might represent
56:41the most extreme form of brain training
56:43its philosophy can be shared by all
56:46each and every one of you
56:49has it in your power
56:50to grow your mind
56:51all it takes
56:53is dedication
56:54and practice
56:55this
56:56has been
56:59you
56:59you
56:59you
